*~*~*~*~*

Shippou woke up to find Inuyasha’s futon empty. He shook his head knowing the hanyou must’ve stayed outside the majority of the night. The kit stood, stretching his limbs as he reached his full height. He had grown in the last few years since Kagome had left. No longer would she be able to hold him like she used to. He was still not as tall as Inuyasha, but he knew he’d eventually stand to be an equal to the dog. He remembered how tall his father looked while in human form. Chiseled features, flowing red hair, and a strong, sleek body. The kitsune looked forward to the day he’d resemble his fallen father, and become the age to continue his line.

Moving about the shrine, Shippou soon found the monk, and to his surprise, Inuyasha, chatting over breakfast. He found his spot, and began to dig in while trying to figure out Inuyasha’s mood swings.

*~*~*~*~*

Inuyasha had ended up falling asleep against the railing where he was star gazing, and woke early that morning when he fell face first into the dirt floor. Picking himself up, wiping the drool from his chin, he yawned and stretched thinking today was a new day. A plan set in his mind, he went searching for the monk of the shrine, and a hearty meal.

Finding the man sweeping the front entrance, he ushered Inuyasha inside as he followed him towards the eating area. They took their seats and food was brought out. Inuyasha wasted no time in chowing his portions. The monk made a comment on Inuyasha’s appetite and Inuyasha gave a toothy grin and said, “Today is a much better day, monk! We are heading North.”

The monk had engaged him so much in conversation about their latest adventures that Inuyasha hadn't paid attention to Shippou entering the room. It wasn’t until the monk asked Shippou a question that he looked over at the kitsune. He noticed Shippou flinch when he laid eyes on him, but he gave him a smile and said, “How does going North sound, Shippou?”

Shippou’s eyes lit up at hearing Inuyasha’s words. “Sounds great, Inuyasha! Are we leaving after breakfast?”

“Aye. Scope out the land, ya know?” Inuyasha’s face turned serious.

Shippou quickly understood what Inuyasha meant by that. He wanted to make sure that the path he knew the wolves would be taking would be a safe course. Take out anyone who would pose as a threat to the wolf prince. Shippou’s insides were clapping and giggling at Inuyasha’s thoughtfulness. Of course, he couldn’t show this on the outside, a good thunk on the head would soon follow. “Good idea, Inuyasha,” Shippou smiled knowingly at his partner.

The two quickly finished their meals, thanked the monk for his hospitality, and were soon off. The got on a path that Inuyasha and Shippou both agreed the wolves would end up using, and used their senses to find any danger. They came across a few demon insects, and a boar or two, nothing interesting or too dangerous. Shippou stayed on path while Inuyasha scoped a few miles each way every so often. He’d always come back irritated that nothing was out of sorts.

“It just doesn’t add up. Sure, the demons have become a bit more peaceful lately, but this is just downright strange. There’s barely anyone around,” he growled.

Shippou agreed as he scanned the area again before they started ahead again. Shortly, night had fallen and they set up camp. “We’ve covered a lot of ground, and the Northern Tribe should have left with Kouga already this morning. Should we stay close to them or continue ahead tomorrow to scout the area?”

“Good question, Shippou.” Inuyasha sat back as he pondered. “If we scout the area, we’ll be a good distance ahead, so if they get ambushed it would take us too long to get back to them. But if we don’t scout ahead, we could end up falling into a trap.” He rubbed his temples as he tried to figure out the best course of action.

Shippou sat quietly, poking the fire he made with a stick as he waited for Inuyasha to come up with a plan. He knew to stay quiet when something like this really mattered to the hanyou. He started when Inuyasha stood and pounded a fist into his open palm.

“We’ll continue to scout, Shippou. But we’ll only stay ahead by a short distance in case we need to assist the mangy wolves,” he sneered.

Shippou chuckled at Inuyasha’s comment. “What about our scent? Don’t you think it’ll piss Kouga off knowing we’re nearby?”

“Tch. All taken care of Shippou,” Inuyasha showed a toothy grin as he sat back down.

The kitsune couldn’t help but cock a brow. “Oh?”

“I haven’t used it in a long time, but if you remember, right before Kagome left, she gave me this bottle of funny smelling stuff. That Houjo guy of hers gave it to her to help keep the hives down, but the smell is strong. Of course, Kagome didn’t have any hives, so she gave it to me figuring I would know what to do with it. I press the contraption down on top and this mist comes out that smells like flowers and mint. I have to spray and run otherwise it gets on me and it’s not something I want to smell for very long.”

Shippou laughed at Inuyasha’s story but agreed that it was a good way for using the medicine. “Should we tuck in for the night, Inuyasha? So we can get an early start?”

“Yeah, from the scent I’m picking up when the wind blows, the wolves aren’t too far off from us. An early start sounds like a good idea.” Inuyasha laid back and tucked his arms behind his head as he gazed at the stars again. “Sleep well, Shippou.” The hanyou closed his eyes and quickly fell asleep.

Shippou watched as Inuyasha’s breathing evened out quickly. ‘Poor guy worked hard today. I suppose I’ll keep watch for a bit so he can get some sleep.’ Minutes later, Shippou’s eyelids failed him and they soon closed and locked into place.

Not far from where they rested, a couple dozen yellow eyes blinked and talons dug deep into the limbs of the trees they rested on.

~*~*~*~*~

Shippou’s eyes fluttered open and nose twitched as the smell of fresh fruit reached his senses. “Fruit, Inuyasha?” The kit was confused when he saw a small sack full of juicy fruits sitting next to a munching hanyou.

“Don’t want to start a fire this early when the wolves are fairly close. Not much to hide the smell of cooked food this early in the day,” he said as he wiped a dribble of juice from his chin.

Shippou smiled as fruit was tossed in his direction. He nibbled on his food as he became fully awake. He sniffed the air and the smell of morning dew and fresh fruit was strong, but he swore he smelled something fowl.

*~*~*~*~*

Inuyasha had the camp packed up and was standing a good ten feet from where he sprayed that stuff Kagome gave him to cover their scent. He had his bag over his shoulder, looking back where he knew the wolves should be. Shippou had just joined his side, coming back from the stream where he washed the juices of the fruit off his paws.

“Ready, Inuyasha?”

The kit was adjusting his pack on his hip when red and silver blurred away from where it was once stationed, “FUCK!” fading past his ears.

Eyes wide, Shippou took off after his friend. Inuyasha must have caught whiff of something from where they had previously been. Shippou couldn’t smell a thing over the roses and whatever else the bottle of liquid that Inuyasha sprayed contained. He was having a hard enough time just sniffing out Inuyasha with how potent the stuff was.

Coming out through a bunch of woods, Shippou found a large clearing where he knew the battle to be taking place. His senses had come back to him during his journey to find Inuyasha and the smell of Kouga and the wolf tribe was strong as well as--Shippou cringed--bird demons.

When he ran out from the shadows of the trees, he faltered in his steps at what he saw.

*~*~*~*~*

Inuyasha couldn’t believe he missed it! The smell of Kouga’s blood had him running as fast as he could to get to the damn wolf. His sleeves were flapping against the wind with his speed as he drove on.

While standing waiting for the kit, he waited for the smell of that awful stuff in Kagome’s bottle to filter out a bit so he could catch whiff of the wolves but when it did, he smelled fowl. He should’ve told the kit what it was, but he had to get to Kouga as fast as possible. The mangy wolf was still injured after all.

Now his blood was hitting his nose strong and his senses were running wild, he pulled out Tetsusaiga as he came hopping out of the last tree before the clearing and scanned the area before he sliced down with his blade, calling out to his sword, tearing through the wretched bird that was hovering over Kouga’s body.

He landed next to the injured wolf, his heart aching when he saw he was badly injured again. Kouga’s name escaped his lips and saw that Kouga recognized him; even reaching out to him, but he had to get the rest of the demons away before he could assess Kouga’s injuries any further.

“Get back!” Inuyasha yelled to the pack who were fighting against the other large demon birds.

Hakkaku and Ginta ran behind Inuyasha in a heart beat, the other wolves following suit.

“Get behind Inuyasha you fools!” Ginta yelled to those of the Northern Tribe.

The black furred youkai conceded when they realized it was just the few of them now against half a dozen or more large demons.

With all of the wolves behind Inuyasha, he let out a “Wind Scar!” and brought his blade to the ground.

Energy came flowing out and tore through the earth and the last of the fowl youkai. Their screams were cut off as the blast shredded them to nothingness.

Inuyasha sheathed Tetsusaiga and turned to find Kouga. Ginta and Hakkaku were putting pressure against the gaping wound on Kouga’s side and moved over when they saw Inuyasha approach.

The silver haired hanyou let out a sigh as he kneeled next to the wounded prince. “I need fresh water boiled and some clean bandages!” He growled his order over his shoulder at the Northern Tribe who was standing in awe of Inuyasha’s power.

He had Ginta and Hakkaku hold the dark haired wolf up by the back so he could take the bandages that he had applied a few days earlier back off. Hakkaku had to cradle the wounded youkai’s head so it wouldn’t loll around while Inuyasha took care of him.

The two friends could see the extra care Inuyasha put into everything he did for Kouga and it warmed their hearts to see that these two really did care for each other like they had guessed many years ago.

The boiled water was brought forth to Inuyasha and a clean rag was given so he could clean the wound once again before applying a cream to help the pain. Kouga’s demon blood would make the wound close on its own, but the pain would be there once he wakes. Inuyasha wanted to make sure Kouga would rest through its healing and not be in pain throughout the process.

Reapplying fresh bandages, he picked up the prince and started to walk back towards where he and Shippou had stayed the night before. He passed Shippou as he moved into the woods, nodding his head to him that everything was fine.

Ginta, Hakkaku, Kouga’s guards, and the wolves followed Inuyasha without question, but the Northern Tribe couldn’t understand the obedience the youkai were giving to a damn half-breed!

*~*~*~*~*

Shippou stood back in the shadows and watched with a tender heart, his friend of so many years, take care of the wounded wolf. He missed out on the battle, but from the terrain, he could see that Inuyasha took no time in defeating the fowl youkai and had already moved on to ordering the wolves around again so he could take care of Kouga.

He saw the hanyou pick up the prince and walk towards him. Inuyasha gave a knowing nod, ensuring him that Kouga was fine and that they were headed back to their camp. They would also be escorting the two tribes to the Northern land no matter what the darker tribe said.
Inuyasha didn’t say any of this, but Shippou knew Inuyasha like he knew himself sometimes. He waited for the rest of the pack to follow Inuyasha and saw the Northern Tribe staring incredulously at the group. He could pick up on their murmurs and knew things might start to get sticky so he intervened.

The wolf youkai approached Shippou to pass but halted in their steps at the kit’s soft yet threatening words.

“Do not piss off Inuyasha. You saw his power, he is not one to be messed with. He will get you to your lands safely, so do not try anything. You do, you’ll have to face not only a pissed off hanyou, but a youkai kit who will do anything for his family!”

At that, Shippou vanished from his spot and reappeared next to Inuyasha. He smiled at the look of determination in the golden eyed hanyou, and how gently he held the wolf prince. His Inuyasha was truly growing up.

*~*~*~*~*

The small group of the Northern Tribe steamed over the kitsune’s words, and vowed to get rid of him and the hanyou before they got to their lands.
