Chapter 20: The Significance of the Prophecy

"What have we got here?" Sakura asked coldly as she stared at the group in front of her. There was no reaction telling her friends that she recognize them. "I don't have the mood to deal with anyone today."

With that she turned away and was about to enter the palace when Kagome ran forward calling her.

"Sakura, it's us! Can't you remember us?"

Sakura turned her head slightly around narrowing her eyes.

"Who are you calling Sakura?" She retorted her voice as cold as ice and Kagome shrank back slightly at her voice. "Never ever mention that name in front of me…"

"Sakura…" Sesshoumaru said softly walking up to her slowly. "Why…"

Sakura's eyes flashed with green light as she twirled fully around; a weird force encircling her, as her hair floated up slightly as if a gust of wind was blowing around her.

"I said never to mention that name again!" Sakura snapped raising her right arm pointing at Sesshoumaru, the cobra entwined around her arms shot towards him immediately its mouth wide opened ready to bite.

On reflex Sesshoumaru raised his Tokijin and slashed the snake into half when it came closer to him. He regretted immediately when he saw Sakura staggered slightly when the snake dropped to the ground and disappeared. Blood was trickling down from her lips as she clutched her heart glaring at Sesshoumaru. That was when he realized that he had hurt Sakura, without meaning to.

A brief emotion flashed across Sesshoumaru's eyes as he moved one step forward wanting to go near Sakura but Naraku stood up immediately.

"You had just gotten your new body," Naraku said to Sakura as he encircled his arm around her waist. "You will not fight our enemy today…"

Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed dangerously when he saw Naraku touching Sakura but before he could do anything else and to everyone's surprise, Sakura slapped Naraku's arm away from her as she glowered at him menacingly.

"Never EVER touch me!" Sakura screamed. "I work for NO ONE!!!!"

Naraku narrowed his eyes at her and smirked softly.

"I brought you here…" Naraku said menacingly. "You dare to defy me?"

"I as the Great Cobra Demon will NEVER work for anyone!" Sakura repeated slowly and warningly. "Never ever try to do that again, or…!"

The other Cobra on her left shoulder suddenly flashed out towards Naraku without warning and stopped an inch away from his throat. Sakura moved her face closer towards Naraku, their faces only inches apart. Naraku too startled to speak could only stare at her.

"You will know what will happen next…" Sakura whispered threateningly.

Withdrawing the snake away from Naraku's neck she turned to face Sesshoumaru irately.

"As for you, I will deal with you another day…" Sakura said softly and coldly.

She turned away from him and the rest of the group feeling blood trickling down her nose and curse inwardly. Using the back of her hand she rubbed the blood away quickly before she stepped into the palace.

"That Youkai in white will pay!!!!" She whispered furiously to herself.

Naraku turned towards the group and saw their speechless and astonished faces and smiled to himself. Knowing that, he could not control the Cobra Demon he could at least keep her around. She could be useful to him in the future. Not wanting to kill Sesshoumaru and the others for now, purple poisonous mists appeared around the palace as it vanished slowly taking Sakura along with him.

"Oh no!!!!!" Kagome cried running forward to the spot where the palace had stood not long ago. "Where did they go? What happened to Sakura?"

"Kagome do you think it had to do with the scrolls your cousin showed us the other day?" Inuyasha asked looking slightly worried. "Something about the Cobra Demon and the Goddess of Phoenix?"

"How would I know?" Kagome shrieked. "She couldn't even understand it herself!"

"What are you both talking about?" Sango asked looking confused. "What scrolls? What Cobra Demon? What Goddess of Phoenix?"

"Back at our time, Sakura got this scrolls about a prophecy." Kagome explained. "We don't really understand it anyway, and it was in some kind of ancient language that had extinct for many years…"

"Do you think Kaede can help?" Miroku suggested. "Why don't you go back and bring the scrolls here Kagome…"

Sesshoumaru watched his half brother and his partners discussing the matter in silence. He had no idea what had happened either. For the first time in his life he felt helpless for not able to do anything and for the Taiyoukai of the Western Lands he never thought that that was possible.

"Sesshoumaru, are you coming?" Inuyasha asked turning to his half brother, who stood a foot away from them. "We are going back to the village"

Sesshoumaru nodded once, he wanted to know whether that old lady they spoke of would know the answer to the prophecy. He wanted to know what exactly happened to Sakura and why did she changed into a demon when there wasn't any scent of her being demon at all when he first met her. All he can sense from her was that she had very strong miko aura.

Inuyasha knew his half brother was worried about this particular girl. He had never known that Sesshoumaru would ever care for anyone was slightly surprised at his attitude towards Kagome's cousin. In silence they made their way back to Inuyasha Forest.

Sakura sat by the ledge of the window looking out the dark sky quietly when Naraku walked into the room. Ignoring him, she continued to stare out the window in silence.

"You did very well today…" Naraku began the conversation.

Sakura snorted.

"If we combine our powers, I can assure you that we will be the most powerful beings alive." Naraku continued slowly as he advanced towards her. "I have the Shikon No Tama that will help both of us."

Sakura turned her head to his direction slowly her eyes void from emotion and her reptile green eyes flashed dangerously.

"What makes you think that I need that piece of trash," Sakura relied coldly. "I am not like you Naraku… you seek something powerful because you are not powerful enough. As the Cobra Demon, do you think I need to seek such drivel?"

Naraku seethed furiously looking at Sakura who just stared back at him with mild boredom shown on her face.

"I need to rest," Sakura turned away from him and looked out the window again. "I'm still wounded…"

Naraku narrowed his eyes dangerously at Sakura before he turned and left the room in a hurry.

She has an attitude… Naraku thought. Sooner or later, I'll bring her down a peg or two…

Sakura stared out the dark horizon, as her mind drifted off to Sesshoumaru. She blinked once remembering how he had cut her snake into half so swiftly she didn't even see the way he moved. She could sense that he was a powerful demon before he drew his sword; he had taken her by surprised at how swiftly he had moved. A small evil smile played around her lips.

We will see who is stronger… Sakura thought to herself. No matter what, I will take him down once and for all…

"This is a legend that was once told long time ago." Kaede said as she studied the scrolls. "It is about a chosen girl has to bear the responsibility on the faith that befalls every living creature on earth…"

"What does that mean?" Kagome asked softly and miserably.

Everyone had crowd around the fire in Kaede's hut, Sesshoumaru sat at the far end in a corner watching the small group discussing about the matter softly.

"I don't know more than that…" Kaede said. "If I was not mistaken…"

"Sakura had chosen a path which she wanted to forget everything about her pass…"

They all heard a cold emotionless voice said by the door. Everyone turned and saw Kikyo standing at the frame of the door looking expressionlessly at all of them. Inuyasha stood up immediately.

"Kikyo…" Inuyasha whispered.

Kagome's eyes widened for a moment with shock and then disappointed when she saw how Inuyasha got anxious at her appearance. Miroku and Sango turned to look at Kagome wearily though Kagome turned away from them so that they couldn't see the sadness in her eyes.

"Sit down Inuyasha…" Kikyo commanded immediately. "Kaede let me see the scrolls…"

Kaede passed them to her as she scanned everything down quickly.

"What do you mean Sakura chose a path where she wanted to forget everything…" Kagome asked quietly pushing her sadness away, for it was not the time to dwell about it. Sakura was in danger and if they didn't find a way to get her back, she would never be able to see her cousin again.

"Did Sakura suffer from losses recently?" Kikyo turned to Kagome solemnly.

"Her family died in a fire not long ago." Kagome answered slowly. "A month plus… she seemed to be getting along fine with me and my family…"

"I do know one thing is that she still has a chance." Kikyo said passing the scrolls back to Kaede. "Until the next full moon, Sakura is still able to make her choice between good and evil."

"Which means?" Kagome pressed on.

"This had started long time ago about a battle between the Goddess of Phoenix and the Cobra Demon. The Goddess of Phoenix had died trying to subdue the Cobra Demon century ago." Kikyo said. "The Goddess of Phoenix was a kind hearted creature which brings good fortune and happiness to every living thing. The Cobra Demon was cruel hearted who slays without a second thought."

"Can't you get to the point?" Sesshoumaru growled impatiently, for he already knew that small piece of information.

Everyone except Kikyo jumped at his voice. They had totally forgotten about him, for he had sat in the corner of the hut so quietly as if he was never there.

"I am getting to that." Kikyo replied coldly in returned. "The Goddess of Phoenix died together with the Cobra Demon trying to seal her. She had used all her powers on the attempt and to succeed she had sealed the cobra demon into her soul. After this had happened, every one thousand years they will be reincarnated into a chosen girl. Both of them will be in this chosen girl and when she turned 16 on her date of birth in the next full moon in the month, she will have to choose between becoming the Goddess of Phoenix or the Cobra Demon. There was a tribe who worship the particular girl. Their tradition was carried down for many centuries as they will wait for the particular girl to be chosen. However during the war between demons and humans five hundred years ago wiped off the whole tribe. Sakura was chosen to take this responsibility, I do not understand is that why they are reincarnated now for it is only been five hundred years ago the other died."

"Sakura and I are from the future which is five hundred years from now, which means that it is exactly one thousand years when this Cobra Demon and Goddess of Phoenix are reborn, besides that she will be sixteen in three days time…" Kagome said softly. "But why did she choose to be evil… according to her nature she is not the type who would choose to be someone so cruel and why did it happened so soon, you said she had to be 16 to choose…"

"Something must have triggered the anger and sadness in her heart… that could be the result of this when her emotions are suffering from anguish. And besides that, both the Cobra Demon and Goddess of Phoenix grow stronger every year, and they would be like part of her when her birthday draws closer." Kikyo continued. "The cobra demon never cared about anything but herself. She chose to be her to forget her pass… for the cobra demon doesn't feel for anything or anyone."

"I thought that she was always happy being with us…" Kagome said as tears started to burn her eyelids. "Why didn't I see it before…? I would be able to stop this from happening."

"You still can help her," Kikyo said as she turned away heading for the door, she stopped at the frame of the door and turned her head slightly to look at Sesshoumaru her eyes cold. "There are three more days till the full moon appears which is on Sakura's birthday. You are still able to get her to change her mind. Within the Cobra Demon, Sakura's heart still exists until then. But after the full moon, Sakura's heart will vanish from this world forever."

Everyone turned to look at Sesshoumaru in surprised. Why Kikyo pointed that statement at him particularly? Was there something that had happened between Sakura and him that they didn't know about?

Sesshoumaru stared at them expressionlessly though his heart felt like stone weighing down with guilt. He had not meant things like this to happen. Not wanting to admit his repentance he remained silent, they didn't need to know what had happened. He will handle this matter by himself.

They all turned back to the door but Kikyo was no longer there.

Ray peeped out the cupboard cautiously.

Kouga: Yo!

Ray: Aughhh!!! (Fell out from the cupboard)

Kouga: Don't tell me that you had been in there for the whole day?

Ray: Shut up!!! (Standing up immediately and brushing off the dirt from her clothes.)

Kouga: You really piss off lots of people just to please Naraku…

Ray: I am not pleasing anyone… (Cross her arms) That is how the story is that is all.

Kouga: Ah soh (Pointing his finger to at something behind Ray's back)

Ray sweat drop turned around slightly to see Sesshoumaru and Kagome coming up.

Ray: AUUGHHH!!!! (Running away grabbing her laptop along with her)

Kagome & Sesshoumaru: You are not going to get away this time!!!!
