Kagura had discovered that the child was really easy to care for. Seeing as how there were no other females in the castle Kagura had taken it as her job to care for her, she also saw herself in this girl, except that Kagaura still had a fire burning in her when she was sent off and this girl Rin seemed extremely broken of any life.

 

When bathing Rin, she first took off the kimono and immediately went to destroy it, when she came back into the bath room Rin was exactly as she'd left her, not covering herself and staring at the wall.

 

“Rin, it's time for your bath there is some soap next the bucket and it seems tough at first but it's the kind with the least amount of scent and Sesshomaru does not tolerate strong smells or perfumes. Do you think you can manage this task?”

 

The girl simply nodded and Kagura had exited only to stand outside to give her privacy. There wasn't much noise coming from the room and within minutes it was silent. Knocking and opening the door Kagura found the girl kneeling with only her hair half wet and the soap untouched. She must still be frightened; Sesshomaru and I haven't told her of her fate yet.

 

Deciding that this would be the one and only time she would do this she rolled up her kimono and tied her sleeves back. Kneeling behind the girl she talked her through everything she needed to do to clean herself before helping her into the mildly warm water and back out. Wrapping a towel around her she picked her up noticing her light weight and carried her to one of the rooms in Sesshomaru's and her wing. The girl seemed to recognize the crest above the lord's door because she immediately stiffened.

 

Kagura ignored this and led her to the other room next to Sesshomaru's. Sitting her on the bed she began looking through the drawers of the mahogany armoire on the far wall. Finding nothing suitable she turned back to the girl. “Dry yourself I will return in a moment we have nothing for you to wear.” The girl with the lost eyes only nodded. That will need to be changed soon; young girls are supposed to be talkative.

 

There was a knock at the door and both occupants stiffened, the door opened and Jaken came through trying to carry many kimonos without dragging them on the floor but was failing miserably since he was so short. “Jaken you are not to come into the room unless Rin tells you to pass is this understood?”

 

“What?! Who do you think you are bossing me around like that?!”

 

Kagura was about to give him a piece of her mind when a voice from the hallway stopped her, “Jaken you will do as Kagura says, Rin is now my charge and you will do as she asks. She is a lady and will be treated as such.”

 

Jaken hmped as he went to Kagura and gave her five different kimonos, lifting his head up higher he walked out and slammed the door behind him. Inspecting the kimonos Kagura selected an orange and yellow checkered one with a green obi she'd spotted in the drawers. When she approached the bed to lay out the clothes she noticed the girl was still staring out to the door Jaken had left to. But what surprised her most was that Rin now had an emotion on her face, confusion.

 

She began to dress the girl, once again telling her step by step so that she would do this for herself from now on. “Rin, as you have heard your master say, you are now his charge, meaning that you are a member, or lady of his court. This means that any servant including Jaken is to do as you say with no question and if they do not they will fear his wrath.”

 

She finished tying the obi she went for the brush on the nights stand. Moving the girl so that her back was to her she took on the task of brushing out her tangled mess. “Rin, I want you to know that I too was under that monster's care and Sesshomaru took pity on me and allowed me to stay here. He has never touched me in an inappropriate way and has given me a place to live and status. He may be cold at first, well he's cold all the time but sometimes you can see through his mask and see that he cares.”

 

Going back to the dresser she found a yellow ribbon and went back to tie her hair. “Although I must say that I am surprised that he made you a lady of his court you must see that he is kind and will not lay a hand on you ever. He is no monster and in fact is hunting down the bastard that seems to have spread his evil around to humans too.”

 

Looking over her finished product she took down her hair again, this time to tie her hair in a pony tail on the side of her head. She liked it, made her look like a normal child and she would be damned if she didn't give her one from now on.

 

“Alright Rin you are dressed and look beautiful, now we're going to go down to lunch and sit at the table next to Sesshomaru, is that alright?” The girl nodded with more enthusiasm this time. “Now from this day forward you are a new girl, Naraku is no longer a part of your life and he will be dead soon. Sesshomaru has given you a great gift understand? In fact there are no other humans in this castle besides yourself so do not look for any. In a way you are a demon now, and you are living with the strongest demon there is, and he will protect you Rin. Nothing will happen to you from now on you are safe.”

 

She had noticed during her explanation that the girl had begun to show more and more emotion and when she finished Rin had thrown herself into Kagura and was now crying softly. Kagura patted her back noticing that her sobs seemed louder and louder. After a good while the girl stopped and sat back wiping her eyes and placing her hands in her lap.

 

“There, you look all better, would you like to go down to lunch now?” The girl nodded her head and took Kagura's hand as they walked to the door. When they were almost there the girl froze, thinking the worse Kagura immediately felt around for danger and when she felt none looked back at the girl. She was staring at herself in the large mirror by the door.

 

She felt up to her hair and then her face and then her hands felt her kimono. Minutes later she stopped her inspection and looked back at Kagura and did something that made her heart stop.

 

She smiled.

When the two approached the dinner table Sesshomaru was already seated. Kagura nodded toward where Rin was to sit and nodded back joining Sesshomaru on his left of the table while Kagura sat on his right. People filed in instantly brining platters of food and wine (water for Rin) and then left as soon as they'd come. Rin looked down at her food and then back to long table that was empty.

 

“We are the only ones Rin, eat your food.” Kagura's voice echoed in the large room despite her soft voice. The girl seemed still unsure of her self but began to eat slowly since that's how her new master was doing. She glanced over at his plate and noticed it was mostly partially cooked meat and herbs. Lunch somehow dragged on and Rin kept eating each time the demons brought more food. When she was sure she could eat no more she stopped politely sipping at her water and looking at Kagura for clues at what to do placing her hands in her lap.

 

Kagura finished dabbing her mouth with a napkin and made eye contact with the girl. “Excuse us Lord Sesshomaru.” She said before standing and bowing before him, the girl immediately followed suite and followed Kagura out of the hall glancing back at the lord one quick time and smiling.

Time seemed to pass on in this manner, Rin slowly learning from Kagura on what was acceptable and what not. She had still not spoken three weeks later despite Kagura's constant prodding, she was slightly grateful for Sesshomaru's silent approach to her. He hadn't said her name since the first day. At first she had tried to stay out of everyone's way as much as possible, but found she liked running into her lord on the castle grounds and would sometimes walk far behind him to see where he went. But for the most part she was Kagura's shadow trying to pick up on what was the correct etiquette. If she had annoyed her she never said so she would continue until she told her to stop.

 

It was three weeks later that Rin found herself one late afternoon in the garden. She was picking flowers to make herself a wreath necklace to go along with her `crown' made of daffodils. If she didn't hurry she wouldn't make it back in time to change for dinner.

 

She didn't notice when a dark shadow fell on her, it wasn't until he spoke that her heart leapt into her chest and tears threatened to fall. “My sweet Rin, rumor has it that even though you sleep in the room next to Sesshomaru he has yet to touch you. Did you resist him Rin? Or were you simply too disgusting.” Tears leaked out of her eyes and when she turned to look at the horrible monster a sob broke through. “Since you have failed me Rin, I have no choice but to kill you.” As he raised he hand and formed it into a sharp blade only one word left her mouth.

 

“Sseesssshhhooommmaaarrruuu!!!!!”

 

And then there was black.
