Black Magic and the Touch of the Devil

Kikyo placed her sleeve over her mouth and nose so as not to breathe in the toxic fumes of her mother's potion before entering.

“Mother, it's almost time for the ball, are you coming?”

“The potion for Lady Takashi needs to boil for a few days, but in the meanwhile, where is Kagome? My shikigami needs to release the potion it's holding for her in its fangs if it's going to be able to bite Lady Takashi.”

“She's right upstairs, should I go… bring the shikigami up to say hello?”

“That would be very nice.” Tsubaki poured another putrid looking liquid into the pot.

“Kikyo? Do you know how you're going to reel Inuyasha in?” Tsubaki said to stop Kikyo before she could leave.

“Not yet, but---”

“Don't underestimate him child.” She eyed Kikyo meaningfully. "He may be just half demon, but he does have Lord Inu Taisho for his father, so you wont be able to do just the minimum.”

Kikyo nodded and left.

Rin's Room

Rin fixed her short side ponytail and checked it a thousand ways in the mirror, especially making sure the tie went with the dress Kagome had lent her.

“Hello?” a man knocked outside.

Rin turned 90 degrees in her chair so she faced the door. “Yes?”

Shippo walked in and smiled nervously, Rin returned it with a just-as-nervous smile.

“Hey.” Shippo sat down in one of her chairs and looked her over. “You look beautiful.” He said softly.

"T-thanks.” She nodded.

“So, for the ball tonight, I was wondering if you would spare me a dance.” He said casually, Rin did a metal back flip at his words.

“All of them if you'd like.” She smiled.

“I would lo---”

“Shippo!” Koga appeared in the doorway. “Come on! You have to be there before Kagome can make her entrance. Get a move on, Lady Takashi's frantic!” he dashed back out.

“Well, I'll see you at the ball.” He leaned over and kissed her quickly before dashing out after Koga. Shippo took once last glace back and smirked as he saw Rin smiling in pure happiness, touching her lip lightly.

Meanwhile

Kagome took a deep breath and looked around again. Where the heck is Rin? Ayame's here, Sango's here, she's never late, so where is she? They're going to announce me soon! Kagome scowled. Thanks mom, thank you so much for making me do this stupid entrance, what is with you, are you trying to scare me away?

“Kagome.” Sango scolded and took her Kagome's hands from her right hip tassels for the third time, Kagome had already accidentally worn one off.

Rin dashed own the hallway, she had torn her necklace off accidentally when it caught on the door, so she had to go back and grab another.

“Oh crap, please do not announce Kagome yet!” she pleaded out loud.

“Ah, there you are!” Ayame whispered as loudly as she could.

The shikigami slithered around from behind the doorway and made a lunge for Kagome's leg, missing and injecting the poison into Rin's blood stream as she stepped in the way. “Ow!” Rin kneeled down and rubbed her ankle.

“What is it?” Ayame leaned down next to her, Sango and Kagome started to join Rin on the floor but they stopped as they saw the tail of something slither threw the doorway.

Down the hallway, Kikyo picked up the shikigami and squeezed it's jaw, making sure that none of the liquid dripped from it's fangs meaning that it had injected all of the potion into Kagome before heading back into the great hall through the back door so it was as if she wasn't gone. “Good job.” She whispered to it before hiking up her dress and wrapping it around her leg so it wouldn't be seen, she then dropped her skirt and fixed her hair quickly before walking back into the great hall.

“I think something bit me, but there isn't teethe marks or anything.” Rin inspected her ankle.

Sango poked her head around the corer before Kagome pulled her back.

“He's announcing me!” she hissed. “No way you're backing out now.”

Hokaku and Ginta pulled the door open on the other side and Rin and Ayame started down the stairs, Ayame, again in a fur dress that was suitable for both fighting and being dressed up. Kagome and Sango started down next and the crowd awed at them, Inuyasha just stood stalk still when he saw Kagome.

“So…” Koga wrapped his arm around Inuyasha's neck. “You and her aren't hating each other as much.”

“What?” Inuyasha tried to shake him off, but Koga held on tighter.

“So you're making gaga eyes at her for no reason?” Koga inspected his nails, enjoying Inuyasha's face as he went red.

“Well, I wont keep you for long.” Koga jumped away as Inuyasha swiped at him again. “I gotta go see Shippo next, he kissed Rin and she looked seriously happy, so I gotta `visit' him next.” He left, weaving through the crowd.

“Inuyasha.” Miroku tapped him on the shoulder; he had borrowed some of Inuyasha's dress pats and a shirt so he wouldn't be forced to wear his robes to the ball. “She's at the bottom of the stairs, you should go ask her to dance.” Miroku waited to see what Inuyasha would do and continued when he didn't move. “Because if you don't, that Bankotsu is already on his way over to her.”

“What?!” Inuyasha yelped and sped off through the crowd as fast as he could while walking.

Kagome stopped at the bottom of stairs and looked around the crowd of people who had formed a circle around her, Inuyasha wasn't there, but Bankotsu was making his way over to her.

“Sango help.” Kagome whispered without moving her lips so her smile wasn't affected.

Shoot. Kagome grimaced slightly. I didn't tell Sango who he is, what he looks like, or even his name! How is she supposed to help me?

Kagome turned as someone tapped her shoulder and smiled when she saw it was Inuyasha. He held up his hand and she gladly took it, he led her to the middle of the dance floor and began a slow dance with her.

“Lady Higurashi!” Lady Takashi hissed as she moved closer to her through the people. “Where's Inuyasha? I need to get him to ask Kagome for a dance!”

Lady Higurashi put her finger to her lips and pointed to the dance floor where Inuyasha and Kagome were slowly spinning within the circle of people, both looking each other right in the eye and both seemed very pleased.

“But… he… did… but… did he go out there by himself?!”

Lady Higurashi nodded and Lady Takashi just stood staring at her son in awe.

Sango looked around for someone to dance with and took a step back in confusion as Miroku stepped forward through the crowd and bowed, he held up his hand but she hesitated to take it.

“In apology.” He explained, she looked at his hand again before taking it and following him out onto the dance floor; a few of the guests murmured at her choice of a village monk for the first dance partner.

“But he's a commoner!” Tsubaki disapproved, Naraku nodded in agreement that a commoner shouldn't socialize with a noble. Tsubaki looked around for Kagome, who would no doubt be killing Inuyasha right now, but her jaw went through the floor and down to the center of the earth as she saw Kagome and Inuyasha dancing happily together.

“What---but---how---? She's supposed to hate every male she loves! Why is she smiling?!” Tsubaki whipped her head around to kill Kikyo, but found her just as perplexed.

Why…? Kikyo looked around in worry because of her failure. But he bit someone! He had no more of the poison left in his fangs, so that means he released it all into someone's blood. But if it wasn't Kagome, then who---?

“Get away from me!” Rin said hotly, attracting the attention of anyone near her.

“What?” Shippo asked.

“I said get away! You just never know when to leave someone alone do you? Always tagging after me like you do, you must really be desperate! Or dumb, considering you keep trying for me.” She stormed out the crystal doors leaving a stunned Shippo standing there with his hand out towards her.

“Rin!” he called suddenly and took off after her, his tail swishing behind him.

“That damn shikigami!” Tsubaki hissed. He bit the wrong person! Stupid useless unreliable creature!

“What happened?” Kagome asked anyone who was listening, everyone either shrugged or shook their head, no one knew.

“It doesn't make sense ma'am.” one of the servants told her. “She seemed very happy with him earlier, and there wasn't really any time for him to make her mad with the preparations for the ball. He just asked her to dance and she started yelling at him.”

“That's weird.” Inuyasha added. “Shippo was with Koga all day, and he said she was happy after he kissed her, so why?”

“He kissed her?” Kagome said suddenly.

“Yeah, but---”

“That's awesome! She really does like him too, so…?” Kagome looked back out the still open door.

“Yeah, I wonder why she would do that?”

“She got bitten!” Kagome said quietly.

“What?” Inuyasha spun her towards the center of the dance floor so everyone watching couldn't hear them.

“There wasn't a bite mark, but something definitely clipped her ankle or something happened that hurt her, anyway, I saw the tail of a grey snake disappearing around the archway upstairs, I think that's what bit her!”

“Did you follow it?”

“No, I was announced that exact second, and I still wanted to be here with you, so I didn't risk following it and not showing up so my mother had to kill me.”

“Yeah, well…” Inuyasha blushed slightly and looked away, Kagome smiled bigger.

Other Side of the Dance Floor

“Lady Sango,” Miroku started. “I do want to apologize, I just couldn't help myself when I saw you beauty.”

“Sure.” Sango said skeptically.

“That hurts.” Miroku said softly after a pause.

“What?” she looked up at him.

“The first woman I'm actually attracted to, and she couldn't care less about me because I'm a common monk.” He laughed sadly.

“Your social rank has nothing to do with this, I just… well, I've ever really felt anything for a man.” She blushed as he said he was attracted to her. Why the heck am I telling this complete stranger and womanizer about my personal life?!

“So you forgive me then?” he looked her in the eye.

“Of course.” She said quietly, taken aback by his expression and how close he was.

“Thank you.” He smiled, pulling away again; Sango nodded, surprised that she was smiling too.

“Kikyo!” Lady Tsubaki grabbed her daughter's arm as she tried to leave. “What happened? Why isn't Inuyasha dead on the floor by Kagome's feet?!” she snapped, pushing her into her potion room.

“I don't know!” Kikyo wailed. “The shikigami injected all the potion, but he must've got that Rin girl by accident!” she fell back on the bed while Tsubaki stormed around to her closet and yanked out the pot with the simmering poison in it.

“Every day we wait, Kagome and Inuyasha grow closer. I'm getting rid of Lady Takashi tonight!” she grabbed the shikigami and jammed its fangs into the liquid.

“Tonight?!” Kikyo ran forward. “It's to dangerous! Right after Rin getting attacked, we could get found out and hunted down! Besides, the poison needs to boil for a few more days, you said so yourself!”

“The longer you cook it, the longer it takes for the poison to kill'; it'll still take a few days, so hush!”

“Mother---!” Kikyo became scared at the idea of using a poison that dangerous and touched her mother's shoulder.

“We can't wait any longer.” Tsubaki snapped and opened the door so the shikigami could slither out. “Go find your brother and tell him to work on Kagome! I don't care what he's doing, this is now his first priority. Now Kikyo! Right now!”

Kikyo scrambled out the door, trying to get away from her mother's sudden rage as soon as possible.

Just you wait Inuyasha! I don't fail at anything, and I'll kill Kagome if I have to if it means I win you! She dashed off through the crowd for Bankotsu. The fastest way to get to Kagome would be through friends, magic or loved ones… she spotted Bankotsu, surrounded by girls as always and raced towards him.

“Mother says for you to use your magnetic traits on Kagome, or she'll kill us both, the shikigami bit Rin by accident and she has homicide in her eyes!” Kikyo whispered into his ear urgently; Bankotsu immediately excused himself from the women and walked out onto the balcony where he had seen Inuyasha and Kagome disappear.

“Inuyasha?” Kagome said quietly. “Where are we going?” Inuyasha had taken her and jumped off the balcony, right into the center of the maze, he was following one certain path in it now.

“Shh!” he whispered. “Someone will hear you, just follow me!” he picked up Kagome bridal style when he couldn't walk that slow anymore, after he was too annoyed at how slow humans were. Inuyasha took one last jump right over the wall and landed in the far section of the maze, where there was a trap door in the ground.

“So that damn Koga doesn't follow us, he wont be able to track my scent easily.” He pulled it up as if it weighed 2 pounds and lifted Kagome down.

Kagome hit the bottom and on the first step tripped over a rock; Inuyasha caught her easily and walked her down the dark tunnel.

He finally came across a doorway in the ceiling and pushed it up, Kagome looked up and gasped at the clear starry sky. “It's beautiful!” she cried and hoisted herself up to get a better look.

“Thought you'd like it.” He got up next to her. “It isn't that hidden, but it has to be clear enough to see.”

“Oh look!” Kagome pointed as a shooting star flying across the sky.

I wish that this works. Kikyo made her wish last minute before being pulled out into the open by Bankotsu.

“Oh, I apologize, we didn't know you were here.” Bankotsu said, walking closer. “We just wanted to get out of the people, I guess we weren't the only ones.” He took Kagome's hand and kissed it, making Inuyasha growl quietly.

“You wouldn't mind if I stole her for a quick walk, would you?” he eyed Inuyasha.

“Of course not.” Inuyasha said flatly as Kikyo grabbed his arm.

Damn! Kikyo pulled Inuyasha in the other direction. Why is Bankotsu so good at this?! He's completely relaxed!

Bankotsu placed Kagome's arm on top of his own and gripped it tightly as they walked away.

Kikyo sighed. I can do this, he told me to just keep Inuyasha occupied, I can do this, just don't take to long Bankotsu!

“So.” She said seductively. “Would you honor me with a dance, since we didn't get one inside?”

“Sure.” Inuyasha took her hand and waist and began a slow spin, but Kikyo could see that his mind was way off where Kagome was; she even snarled when he looked in her direction.

“Inuyasha.” She took a step closer.

“Yeah?” he looked back just as Kikyo grabbed his cheeks with both her hands and pulled him down into a kiss.

Farther back into the Maze

“Are you and Inuyasha involved now, or can I still fight for you?” Bankotsu took both her hands and looked into her eyes.

“You can still fight if you want to.” Wont get you far at all, but you're welcome to try.

“Then please accept this.” He leaned down and gripped her tightly as he crushed his lips against her.

Kagome reacted almost immediately and her hands shot to his shoulders, trying to push her away.

Holy god! She pushed harder. He's freaking stronger than a demon!

Bankotsu pulled his sleeve down slightly and prepared to jab her side with the drugged needle hidden under his cuff.

“Kagome!” Ayame called from the center of the maze where she had lost hers and Inuyasha's scent.

Kagome twisted her head to the side as she realized that Ayame had startled Bankotsu, lessening his grip a little. “Over here Ayame!”

She sounds a little frantic! Oh god, what happened?! Ayame took off at full speed over the tops of the maze, towards Kagome's voice.

Damn. Bankotsu took a step back. Now it'll take some serious work to get her away from Inuyasha, especially after that kiss. Bankotsu looked over towards her. She is kind of cute… why didn't I notice that before?

“Kagome!” Ayame skidded around the corner and took a relieved sigh as she saw Kagome alive and not dead on the ground by Bankotsu's feet.

“Ayame, I'm a little tired, we you walk me back? This maze is very confusing.” She quickly stepped over by her bodyguard's side; Ayame took one last glance at Bankotsu before securing her arm around Kagome's waist and leaped over the outer most maze wall and onto Kagome's balcony.

Bankotsu looked a few more seconds at where Kagome had disappeared before starting back.

Inside

“Where is she?” Kikyo walked into her brother's room and over to where he was pouring over a book.

He held up his sleeve, showing the needle, which still had the entire amount of the drug on it. “That damn bodyguard of hers got there before I could inject her and still have enough time to get away, Kagome's still conscious and at the moment in her own room under Ayame's infallible guard.” He growled. “Where's mom?” he walked over to the window and looked back out into the maze.

“In her room with dad, why?”

“It'll be easier to get to Inuyasha using Kagome if his mother's gone.” He turned back to Kikyo and gave her an evil smirk. “So we need the shikigami.”

“You go.” Kikyo said firmly, sitting down on the bed. “I almost got killed for my mistake, I don't want to have to report yours too.”

“Fine.” Bankotsu laughed and headed for the door.

Kagome's Room

Rin slammed the door and sat down hard in the chair.

“What's with you?” Ayame asked.

“God, what is it with boys?!” she yelled, throwing her hands into the air.

“I know.” Kagome said to herself.

“Shippo just wont get out of my hair! He follows me around everywhere and won't believe me when I tell him that I hate him!”

“You told him what?” Sango asked, appalled.

“I told him exactly what I thought.” She said tartly.

“But you love him, you told me yourself!” Kagome protested.

“I never did, I must have been sleepwalking when I said that.”

“Rin, you liked him, loved him, and that just changed… right before the ball.”

“She was bitten!” Sango said in realization. “By that grey snake!”

“Do you think it was poisonous?” Kagome asked, knowing exactly what Sango was talking about.

“Don't know, we should go see someone, like… Myoga!” Kagome sprang up from the bed.

“Who?” Ayame asked.

“You called mistress?” Myoga appeared out of nowhere and bit Kagome on the neck, she flattened him with a quick slap.

“Myoga, can you try Rin's blood and see if it's tainted?” Kagome held him over to Rin as Myoga popped back to into 3D.

“You want me to taste this woman's blood?” Myoga said eagerly.

“Yes, see if she's poisoned or drugged or something.”

Rin leaned back as Myoga hopped onto her leg, but Kagome nodded and Rin reluctantly pulled her collar down slightly, Myoga hopped up and took a bite; Rin squirmed for a few seconds before she couldn't stand the itch anymore and flattened him.

“She's poisoned.” Myoga said weakly as he floated down to the floor, and popped back up as he landed on her leg again. “You have very tasty blood miss, but you definitely have some sort of poison or drug in your blood stream.”

“See?” Kagome said excitedly.

“But why would I get poisoned?”

“I don't know, but Myoga?”

“Yes ma'am?” he jumped back up to Kagome's neck and bit her again, and then floated down to her knee after getting squashed.

“Who can we go to that will clean out Rin's blood stream?”

“Hmm.” He tapped his chin with his tiny hand. “You would have to see the Black Magic Siblings, Korika specializes in poisons and diseases.”

“Who?” Sango moved closer so as to hear him better, but kept far enough away so he couldn't bite her.

“The Black Magic Siblings are demons that are said to be the guardians of all things that cause pain and suffering. There are five of them: Kanchia, the fire demon, Keirika the storm demon, Kairiko the demon of the night and sightlessness, Korika the demon of disease, and Kuriko the demon of hate. You must see Korika, who will trade you something in order to purify Rin, but be warned Lady Kagome, their prices are rarely small trinkets, they often ask for lives and blood sacrifices.”

“Where did they come from?” Ayame asked. “Demons are guardians of elements and belongings, not things that cause suffering.” She scoffed.

“They were said to have been immortal beings placed on this earth to be keepers of everything that was let out of Death's chest.”

“Death's chest?” Rin asked.

“Yes, when it was opened by the wife of the demon who was to watch it, the celestial beings created the Black Magic Siblings to be the keepers so the diseases and all other things bad didn't destroy everything; the last things that was let out of the chest was hope, and it was said that the Siblings later created another guardian for it so all good and evil would be balanced.”

“So we just have to go see Korika.” Ayame stood.

“We should take Shippo.” Rin said quietly, everyone looked at her with amazement, but their faces fell as they saw her furious face.

“It sickens me to even say this, but I probably did l-l-love him.” She shuddered, struggling to get that word out. “So he should know that I'm drugged and that's why I told him to go find some whore that would be more suitable for him.”

“You said what?!” Kagome shrieked.

“He deserves it.” Rin muttered and Kagome sighed.

“Lady Kagome.” Myoga hopped onto the top of the desk. “It would be best to take Lord Inuyasha along so he wouldn't worry, his friends Koga and Miroku would also be very helpful.”

Sango blushed at the mention of Miroku, whom she had grown closer to over the course of the night, and blushed even deeper as she realized she was blushing; Ayame scowled at the mention of Koga, she still wasn't sure if she still liked him or hated him for using her to try to get at Kagome.

“Alright.” Kagome nodded. “Rin, I want you to go get Shippo and say nothing but this.” She ordered, ignoring Rin's pleading look not to do it.

“Say: We found out that I got drugged, that's why I'm acting like this, please come with me back to Kagome's room. You don't have to say anything else, no, you aren't allowed to say anything else, got it?”

Rin nodded disgustedly.

“Ayame, go find Inuyasha and Koga, and Sango? Will you help me pack?”

“Sure.” Sango nodded and through her polishing clothe for Hiraikotsu into her chest.

“And Myoga, you're coming too.”

"M-me... ma'am…?” he began to sweat.

“Yep, we'll need your help, don't disappear because I know you love to when there's danger, I'm ordering you to come with us.” She picked him up and held him on the tip of her first finger.

“How about for a small price madam? A few drops of your blood… perhaps?” he smirked in a pleading way.

Kagome sighed and put him on her neck, she held for a few seconds before slapping the itch, and Myoga in consequence.

“Sorry.” She said as he fluttered back onto her knee, as flat as paper.

“It is all right ma'am, because you have delicious blood, especially for a human.”

**Death's chest is based on the idea of Pandora's box, but since this isn't a story based in times of Greek myths, I had to create something else.**

THE BLACK MAGIC SIBLINGS HAVE A VERY SMALL PART, DON'T STOP READING BECAUSE OF THEM! I ONLY CREATED THEM BECAUSE NO TAKASHI CHARACTER FIT THE PART WELL ENOUGH! THAT'S WHY THEY'RE ALL SO ALIKE, BECAUSE THEY'RE SERIOUSLY INSIGNIFICANT! DON'T STOP READING BECAUSE OF THEM!
