Small Girl, Big Surprise, Bigger Plan

Rin sighed and rubbed her stomach again, it was three weeks later, and she was just barely able to stand on her own. Oh god, how do I tell him? Just flat out? `Shippo, I'm---' no, I can't do that. Rin bit her lip. One thing's for sure though, I need some help. She stood up and took a deep breath before exiting slowly, leaning on the wall the whole time for support.

Kagome's Room

Kagome sighed and breathed in deeply, smelling the magnolia blossoms in the air.

“It should be criminal.” Inuyasha scoffed behind her.

“What?” Kagome turned, holding down the waist of her nightgown against the wind.

Inuyasha crossed his arms. “What else? You could drive a man to suicide because of your looks.”

“In a good way, or a bad way?” Kagome smirked, edging closer to him, the sun reflecting against the lake behind her making her look like a celestial being.

“Good, stupid.”

Kagome scowled, but pulled him down into a kiss, shutting him up instantly. “Oh hush---and you're the stupid one.” She said around his lips.

“Kagome?” Rin asked timidly from the door, Inuyasha and Kagome jumped apart.

"Y-yes?” Kagome pushed her hair behind her ear awkwardly, but Rin didn't seem to be noticing anything but the floor.

“Can I talk to you?” she asked so quietly, that Kagome had to strain to hear her.

“Of course.” Kagome nodded at Inuyasha before following her out. Kagome stopped, but Rin shook her head.

“Not here. I don't want to be heard.”

“Uh, ok?” Kagome followed her, eventually ending up in the far corner of the gardens; hibiscuses surrounded them from head to toe.

“So what's this about?” Kagome asked her. “I've already checked for others with my spiritual power, we're alone.”

“I need help.” Rin said out of the blue.

“What's wrong?” Kagome asked, starting to worry.

“Don't freak out.” Rin warned, she took a deep breath and said the next sentence as if it were one word. “We still have to find the Shikon jewel, I'm low on blood, and I'm pregnant, how the heck am I going to tell Shippo?!”

“You're what?” Kagome whispered, her face lighting up. “Rin, that's awesome! Why are you so upset?” she yelled.

“Shh!” Rin put her finger to her lips. “I'm upset because I'm human!” she wailed.

“Excuse me?” Kagome put her pinky in her ear and twisted it. “I'm going to pretend that I still have water in my ear from my bath yesterday, and I want you to tell me what you said again.”

“I said---”

“I know what you said!” Kagome yelled, ticked off now. “Why the heck are you upset because of that?! And more importantly, why are you telling me?! The most important person in my life is a half demon!”

“That's not what I meant!” Rin shook her head vigorously. “They'll all out live me!”

“Huh?”

“I'm human, I have an 87th of what their life is for my life span! What do I do?” she blubbered, actually starting to cry.

“First of all,” Kagome sighed, finally realizing that her best friend wasn't a half demon hater, “you need to tell Shippo.”

“But---”

“No buts.” Kagome told her firmly, grabbing her hand, forcing Rin to look at her. “You're a 14-year old pregnant duchess, and the age and position would have been hard enough, except for the fact that you're carrying a demon's child. You have a hard and exhausting 9 to 13 months ahead of you.”

“13!?” Rin gaped, clutching her lower abdomen.

“Depending on the type of demon, yeah.” Kagome sighed; Rin's head flopped back as she moaned.

“And they'll still outlive me!” she caterwauled.

“Rin, don't freak out!” Kagome told her sternly, holding her shoulders tightly. “It'll be fine, just walk up the stairs, knock on his door, enter when he tells you to, and then just spit it out! Actually, don't just spit it out, go slowly, future-fathers tend to freak out when it's thrown at them like a bee towards honey with extra sugar added.”

“Yeah, ok.” Rin said, slightly hysterical. “Just walk up the stairs… what if he hates me?!”

“Why the heck would he?!” Kagome threw her hands in the air.

“Yeah, you're right.” Rin nodded, trying to convince herself more than Kagome.

“Good luck.” Kagome waved; Rin just kept walking.

“What was wrong?” Inuyasha asked, walking out from behind the magnolia trees.

“You know.” Kagome rolled her eyes. “You were listening.”

“I thought you said the area was clear.” Inuyasha accused.

“I knew you would want to hear.” Kagome shrugged, Inuyasha laughed.

Rin counted each step she took. 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, only four more to go, three, two, one…

She looked down the hallway, seemingly dark despite the light flooding the ballroom just down the flight of stairs she had taken. Rin took another deep breath and started walking again, wondering why she felt like she was walking to her execution. She paused outside of Shippo's door, her hand raised, she let it fall again and rested her hand silently against the door; at least, it was silent to her.

Shippo opened the door from the almost knocks outside and the strange labored breathing, starting back when Rin fell against his chest because she hadn't anticipated him opening the door when she was leaning all her weight against it.

“Rin?” he asked, she froze against his chest, having finally processed what happened.

“Yeah?” she asked innocently. Ok, part one of plan: walk up stairs good; part two and three: knock and enter when he says for you to… fail, major fail.

“Well, I was kind of wondering why you were up.” He looked at her confusedly.

“Well…” part four: just spit it out, spit it out slowly. “I have something I need to talk to you about, well… tell you.”

“Ok, shoot.” He pulled her backwards and sat down on the bed, leaning her against his shoulder.

Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, ok. “What do you think about kids?”

“Kids?” he repeated unsurely.

“Yeah, like, babies in general.”

“Any particular reason?” he raised an eyebrow at her.

“No.” she shrugged nonchalantly.

“Ok, um…” he looked at the wall in thought. Does she want kids? “I think it would be a very interesting experience, and a lot of fun… especially if it were with you.” He added quietly.

Rin sighed, completely relived; inaudible to her ears, but Shippo heard it. “When would be a good time?” she asked next.

“Um, hadn't really thought about it?” he said, his curiosity working overtime now.

“I need to tell you something.” She said suddenly. “I'm… I'm… I'm pregnant, and it's yours.” She turned to look him in the eye. Shippo's head whipped to the right and his eyes met hers, blue to brown, shocked to worried and excited.

“Really?” he verified, Rin just nodded.

“Holy… god.” He mouthed, the air whooshing from his throat tickled Rin's forehead. “Are you ok?” he asked finally.

“You're the one who looks like he's about to pop a blood vessel.” Rin muttered; Shippo blinked before laughing. He leaned forward and grabbed her in a crushing hug.

And Rin started bawling.

“What's wrong?” he asked her frantically, having already been hyperventilating slightly.

“Nothing.” She shook her head, tears flying. “Just me worrying about stupid things that wouldn't have happened in a million years.” She sniffed and pressed her head back into the crook of his neck. “Just hold me, it feels so good.” She whispered, and touched her middle tenderly.

Three Weeks Later

Lady Higurashi was shouting orders left and right; after all, it wasn't easy to plan a wedding. Especially not a wedding between the two second-highest positions in a kingdom.

The duchess and the baron, Lady Higurashi giggled to herself, now Shippo will be the duke and baron and Rin will be the duchess and baroness, they have a lot of work ahead of them, especially when our my lands join with the Takashi's.

Rin started hyperventilating when she saw the decorations being put up, and she looked away to keep her breathing moderately even. She looked own and touched her middle tenderly.

I'm still human, and even if our child's a half demon, he'll still outlive me by a thousand years, or maybe even more. What should I do? … is there a way to become a demon… or even a half demon?

Rin spun and sped down the hallway, on the war path to find out if it was possible.

“Myoga!” she yelled as she walked quickly from room to room, ducking her head into every one to see if he was in there. “Myoga!”

“Yes mistress?” he asked in his pipsqueak voice, hopping up to her neck and biting. She flattened him in 0.02 seconds and gripped him tightly in her fist so he couldn't run away, ignoring his muffled `gih' as she squished him.

“Myoga.” She said quickly after she had bared the door to her room. “Is there a way for a human to become demon?” she opened her palm.

Myoga gasped. “Mistress Rin! Why on earth would you want to become a de---gih.” He squeaked as she squished him again.

“Quiet!” Rin hissed through her fingers, looking around. “I don't want any dramatics, just a yes or no.”

“Mistress Rin…” Myoga hesitated.

“Now!” Rin barked as quietly as she could, jerking her fingers slightly closed to frighten him.

“Alright! Alright! Yes, a human can become demon!” he waved his hands in front of him in surrender.

“How?!” she asked in glee.

That I won't tell you.” Myoga folded his tiny arms and composed his features.

Rin blinked. “What?” she asked dangerously.

“I'm sorry mistress, but I must keep that to myself.” He jumped from her hand and out the window before she could blink.

“Myoga!” Rin yelled at the window, leaning out as far as was still safe. “Myoga!” She looked around and cursed, biting her bottom lip when he didn't come back.

Rin looked around in thought before throwing open her door, picking up her skirts with one hand and racing to the Takashi library. There had to be a record of a human that became a demon there, otherwise, the next time she found Myoga, he was a drowned flea.

Sango's Room

Miroku squared his shoulders and knocked, breathing deeply and telling himself over and over again that he was just worried and he did not like this princess. Besides, he admitted to himself, even if he did, it wouldn't matter. She didn't want him.

“Yes?” Sango called, thanking her stars that she had taught herself not to think of… no, don't… just think of who's at the door. “Come in.”

“Sango, can I talk to you?” Miroku asked, walking in and closing the door behind him.

“Of course.” Oh god, with Miroku… it's so hard not to… oh god… oh g--… I wonder what Bankotsu's doing. Despite how much it sickened her deep inside, a small smile crossed her face when she thought of Bankotsu.

Good, Miroku sighed, she's smiling at me. So there's no hard feelings between us, and I can just tell her like a friend, or an adviser, or better yet… a monk.

“Sango, I have to admit that I'm a little worried about you with that boy named Bankotsu.”

“You are?” He's worried about me? And even if Sango didn't notice at the time, the thought of Miroku being worried about her drove any thoughts of Bankotsu right out of her head.

“I feel like Bankotsu is going to do something bad and you're going to be hurt.”

Bankotsu… Sango sighed slightly, his name bringing her back to the spell.

“I'll be fine.” She assured him, just wanting him away now because she only wanted to be with Bankotsu. “I can take care of myself, no if you'll excuse me.” She rose and walked out of the room, leaving Miroku standing there in her room.

Miroku sighed and turned to go, a small envelope catching his eye, the note hanging partially out of the open envelope.

Blue ink, that's weird. He snorted. Blue ink is only used with… Miroku's smile vanished as he lunged for the envelope. Blue ink is only used for indirect hypnosis. He finished, tearing the letter open, and holding it up to the light so he could read it through the paper without risk of hypnosis himself.

You will only see Bankotsu, you will pay no heed to any other boy's courtship, you will see only Bankotsu, you will not love Inuyasha and you will be completely under Bankotsu's spell when you look into his eyes, you will see no one but Bankotsu .

You will only see Bankotsu? You will not love Inuyasha? But Sango doesn't---Kagome! Miroku tore it up in an instant, placing the torn bits of paper in his mouth and chewing until they were completely illegible as a tiny wet white ball. Miroku then chucked it out the window and into the river. There! I'd like to see him try to get anyone to read it now! But… he was trying to get Kagome, so that means… what? Miroku walked back out of the door, going the way that Sango had ran off to. But how do I get Sango out from under it? I can't expose Bankotsu, it could start an all out war. So how do I…?

Library (Anything underlined is a book title)

Rin tore through book after book, leaving the discarded ones on tables as she past them; all of the books open and bending at the bindings, much to the annoyance of the librarian which Rin was presently ignoring.

Humans, demons, humans, demons… The Life of an Average Human Eating Demon? Rin flipped through the first three pages, but threw it over her shoulder in disgust after the 7th page. The librarian squealed in horror behind her.

Dog Demons… no. Humans and Infant Humans… no… The Complete Record of Half Demons? When was that created? Rin looked through the index and touched her stomach, where a baby bump was just beginning to be feel-able. I better take this one out, just incase I stay human.

Rin begin shifting through the rest of the isles.

“Excuse me Miss Rin?” the librarian approached her, trying to stay calm.

“Yes?” Rin answered, literally throwing another useless book over her shoulder, the librarian squeaked and caught it before it hit the floor.

“Can I help you find anything?” she asked breathlessly, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear that had fallen loose from her tight bun.

“Um, no. I need to keep this matter to myself please.” She said, throwing another book over her shoulder. This time the librarian screamed before catching it.

“Please miss!” she begged.

Rin looked around in doubt, but decided that she did need help. “Fine, but you can't tell anyone.”

“But, ma'am, Shippo will---”

“No.” Rin cut her off. “Not even Shippo. I will tell him when the time is right.”

The librarian looked at the books strewn over the floor and sighed in defeat. “Yes miss… but I can't take any responsibility for this.” She added quickly, knowing the tempers of Inuyasha and his friends because she had worked here since they were pups (or infant humans in Miroku's case.)

“You wont.” Rin smiled, looking around again. “Are… are we alone?”

“Hmm.” The librarian closed her eyes and two seconds later, her seemingly human ears erupted from her head, growing into huge wolf ears and flicking around. “Yes, we're alone.”

"O-ok.” Rin breathed, leaning on the shelves a little for support from the shock.

The woman's ears shrunk back into her head and she pulled the disheveled Rin over to a table to sit down.

“I…” Rin hesitated and took a huge breath before continuing. “I know a way exists for humans to become demons…”

“…Yes…” the librarian leaned in closer to Rin's quiet voice, hoping that Rin wasn't going to ask her help on the subject she thought Rin was going to ask about.

“I need help finding a way to become a demon, preferably a… fox demon.”

The librarian got up and shrieked, sending Rin flying back in her chair. She began running around the library yelling something in another language. Rin grabbed her ankle in desperation when she came close, tripping her.

“Be quiet!” Rin hissed, pulling the poor frantic woman down by her on the floor. “If you tell anyone about this, I promise that you will regret it for the rest of your life! How's a sentence of banishment from seeing books?” Rin asked, realizing what would get the demon to shut up in an instant. The librarian instantly clamped her lips together, though it obviously took a lot of will power.

“Can you please just tell me who has done it before? Just give me the book or record---we can pretend that you never saw me here!” she pleaded.

The demon looked at Rin in almost agony before her ears erupted into wolf ears again and flicked around, making sure that they were still alone. She slowly got up off the floor and dusted her dress off before taking Rin's hand and leading her to a locked door. The librarian left her there for a moment as she ducked behind the counter, grabbing a large brass key and opening the lock before slipping the key into her apron pocket.

She reached inside and felt around for the switch, coughing as the movement stirred up a considerably amount of dust. The she walked over to a shelf and ran her forefinger over the bindings, looking for a certain title, and finally pulling out a large encyclopedia-like book.

“This is the one you need. In particular, chapter 784, page 934,834. Now hurry, I hear someone coming.” The librarian placed her hand over the book and pooled magic into her palm, eventually shrinking it before Rin's startled eyes.

She took Rin's hand and placed the miniature book in it, closing Rin's fingers around it tightly.

“Don't open your fingers until you're where you want to read it, otherwise it'll grow back to original size to fast. The spell will be undone when it has full contact of air on at least one square millimeter of the book. Go, quickly.” She pushed Rin towards the door and walked over to Koga, who had just walked in. “Can I help you my Lord?”

“Yes, um…” he looked around, and Rin took the opportunity to dash to the back wall, taking the long way around to the door. “Oh, Rin!” Koga said suddenly, stopping her in her tracks with her hand on the door.

“Go find Shippo, he wants you.” Koga told her before looking back towards the librarian.

“Yeah.” Rin said quietly before dashing out. He's looking for me? I'll have to hide this fast. She looked at her clenched fist.

Rin dashed into her room. Not wasting time in bolting the door, she wrenched open her dresser and knocked on the bottom twice, making a secret drawer pop open. She threw the book in and slammed it, thanking the gods when the huge book fit. He can't know yet, or he'll just be completely against it.

Rin jumped when someone knocked, but quickly fixed her expression. “Come in.”

“Hey.” Shippo said nervously, closing the door behind him. “Can I talk to you?”

“Sure.” Rin smiled, completely forgetting about her worries when she saw him. Its like Romeo and Juliet for us in the sense that we fell in love at first sight; and the really fast marriage for that matter too.

She took a cautious step forward and placed a small kiss on his cheek, sighing and closing her eyes when he returned it.

“You ok?” he asked, caressing her cheek with his thumb lightly.

“Yeah, why…?” Rin looked down in confusion as something fell to the floor. She reached up and touched her eye curiously; it was wet. I'm crying? Why?

Shippo snorted in half relief. “Mood swings.” He reminded himself and kissed her full on the lips, holding her tightly against his chest. “You look a little out of breath, though. That's why I asked.”

“I'm fine.” Rin breathed into his shoulder, knowing that he would have no trouble hearing.

“You sure?”

“Yes.” She nodded, completely fine because she was about to live forever with him.
