InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Howlers ❯ Chapter 1 ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Kira moved through the silent night quickly, it would only be dark for a few more hours and she had a long way to go. She was to meet with a new pack that had moved in and check them out properly. Make sure that they didn't have any diseases and neither did their wolves. In return they would give her a ring that would allow her to go out into the sunlight without bursting into flames. This meant that she could attend high school like any other teenager. She smiled to herself and sprang from rooftop to rooftop. As Kira moved along she felt as though somebody was following her. She stopped dead in her tracks and looked around. There, semi-concealed by the darkness was a man and 3 wolves.

“What do you want?” She asked, annoyed at being tailed.

The man stepped into the moonlight and smiled. She took him in, he was well built, easily 6' tall and had gray hair except the tuft of white where his bangs should have been. “Forgive me, I am Ginta, I have been sent to make sure that you don't pull any tricks on us.”

Kira smirked, “What ever, let's just go.”

Ginta nodded and walked through a door to the right of him. She followed and as soon as she stepped in she could smell wolves everywhere. There in front of her sat the elders and upon seeing them she bowed, “Thank you for gracing me with the opportunity to be in alliance with your great tribe.”

The oldest of the demons smiled, “And it is a pleasure to be allied with you, we look forward to assisting each other. As for the checkups, we ask that you check the pups first.”

Kira nodded, “of course, if that is what you wish.” She went to walk towards the pups when another wolf demon stepped in front of her.

“Hold on just a minute, how do we know that we can trust you?” he asked.

Kira sighed, “I don't think I have given a reason for you not to trust me, and you're giving me that ring, I highly doubt it would benefit me to betray you or injure any of you in any way.”

“Hn, fine, but be warned, I'm leader and I will kill you on the spot if you betray us.”

She bowed in mockery, “why of course my lord.”

The elders seemed to sense that things were about to get ugly, so they stepped in, “Lord Kouga, please, don't interfere with this, she is the best chance we have at making it here.”

Kouga snorted and stalked off, obviously put out by Kira and the elder.

“Now, let's get started.” Kira walked up to the first pup and bent her head to it's neck, taking a long sniff as she did so. Her eyes momentarily flashed bright green but nothing else happened, “this one's clean, next.”

Mothers kept passing their pups to her and each one she checked just like the first. When all of the pups had been checked she moved on to the women, then the men, and finally the elders. After multiple hours of checking only one demon remained, Kouga.

“All right Lord Kouga, your turn.” She smirked a bit and took a step towards him, causing him to back up. “Oh come now, I'm not going to hurt you.”

“Lord Kouga, please, just let her check.” One of the elders started to stand but Kouga waved her down.

“Fine, just watch yourself vampire.”

Kira stepped up next to him and placed her nose next to his throat. She started to take a breath but it hitched in her throat.

“Kira? What is it?”

She stepped back and covered her nose, “You're clean, now someone open up that door.”

The elders looked at each other with worry, “Is something the matter?”

Kira shook her head, “It's just getting to be too much, now opened the damn door!”

Ginta did as she ordered and as soon as the door was open she disappeared, moving too fast for the eye to see. A few moments later there was a horrible yowl that got cut off in the middle. Kira appeared back in the room, smiling, with a little bit of blood on her lips.

“Sorry about that.”

Kouga looked at her with utter disbelieve in his eyes, “Did you just kill a cat?”

Kira nodded, “It was the closest animal that was sick, I had no other choice, poor old lady down the street is going to be so upset.”

Kouga's face paled a bit but then his eyes widened, “You… you could have attacked a human, why didn't you?”

Kira's smile faded, “I don't kill humans, it's a disgusting practice that shames my kind, we can get just as much sustenance from animals. On top of that, I only eat the sick or old, it's not fare to take young, healthy lives.”

Kouga smiled, “That's good to know, maybe I can come to trust you after all.”

Kira gave a short laugh, “yea, maybe, but first you have to gain my trust, it's not something that I easily give.”

The oldest elder once again spoke, “Kira, we thank you for the service you have done us, here is your payment.” The old woman held out a silver right with a bright blue stone in the middle, sparkling wildly even in the dark.

Kira's eyes go very wide and she tentatively held out her hand, where the ring was placed with a smile on the elder's face. She quickly placed the ring on her finger and her eyes once again flashed green. “Thank you, I am in your debt.” She bowed and then backed up, “now, if you'll excuse me.” Kira disappeared and the door shut.

Kouga scoffed, “I don't see what all the fuss is about, it's just a ring.”

The woman elder who had handed Kira the ring gave Kouga a stern look, “That girl has spent her entire life hiding from the sun, she has never felt it's warmth, never spent too long playing with her friends and come back in with a sun-burn. Can you imagine going 17 years without sunlight?”

The young lord's face instantly fell, “Gee, I can't even begin to comprehend what that must be like. Maybe I was a bit hard on her, it's not like she chose to be what she is, and she has to suffer for it anyway. Sorry Mika.”

Mika smiled, “It's good that you understand, now that that's out of the way we need to discuss your schooling. The council has picked out a high school for your senior year, you will attend West Kyoto High.”

The next day

Kira looked up at the large building that she had prayed to one day be able to attend, West Kyoto, the only high school this side of the tracks.

“Well, here goes nothin'” She walked through the gates and went to the office. When she stepped inside it was warm, bright, and very welcoming. The woman behind the desk looked up at her and smiled.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

“Yes, my name is Kira, I'm a new senior here this year.”

“Ah yes, we're so pleased that you'll be joining us, will your parents be attending the new student information meeting?”

Kira frowned, “No, my parents died when I was 13.”

The woman frowned, “Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know. Well, the meeting is about to start, but you don't have to attend if you don't want to, it'll just be a basic layout of the rules and a tour of the school.”

“No thank you, I already know my way around.”

“All right then, here's your schedule and your locker number and combo.” The woman handed her a piece of paper, “If you have any questions just come ask me, and by the way, my name is Shay.”

Kira grinned, “Thanks Shay, I appreciate it.” She turned and was about to walk out the door when it opened and who should step in but Kouga, Ginta, and a wolf demon she hadn't met. “What a pleasure.” She said sarcastically and gave a slight bow.

Kouga scowled but Ginta and the other wolf smiled, “Hey Kira!” Ginta said happily, “You going to school here too?”

“Yea, first time at a school, I can't wait for the classes to start.”

Ginta and the other wolf looked at each other and the one she didn't know spoke, “You've never been to school before?”

She shook her head, “Nope, I've been taking classes online since I was 13.”

Ginta looked puzzled, “what about before then?”

Kira's happy mood disappeared, that was the second time in 10 minutes she would have to say something about her parents, “My Mom taught me, and don't ask why she's wasn't teaching me up until now, she and my dad are dead.”

Ginta looked taken aback, “Wow, I'm sorry, but hey, if you need a friend or a study buddy, just look me up, and this here is Hakaku, he's cool too.”

Kira turned to the wolf demon, he had a white mow hawk that actually looked quite good on him, “Nice to meet you, and shouldn't you guys be getting your schedules?”

“Oh, yea, see ya later.” Ginata smiled and waved before taking a few steps up to the counter.

Kira chuckled and walked out the door, even though it hadn't started that well, she was eager to start her first day.
