"Inuyasha, watch out!"
Time stopped as the sickening sound of flesh giving way to the tough appendage of a poisonous scorpion demon. And then, just like that, the clock returned to its usual speed and screams of horror immediately filled the village.
Inuyasha looked slowly to see an ugly brown stinger protruding from his abdomen, a green-brown liquid spurting revoltingly from the pointed tip. His head began to spin as his vision blurred. The last thing he saw was Kagome running towards him, tears of worry pouring down her pallid cheeks.
.
A little boy with long white hair and fuzzy white ears giggled happily as he ran after his favorite ball through the peaceful clearing. His mother watched with a grateful smile from where she knelt under a blooming Sakura tree, sipping delicately from an intricate cup of expensive green tea. Unbeknownst to the happy pair, eyes watched from the refuge of the trees.
"Sir, are you sure we should be doing this?" a man with shaggy brown hair asked his companion.
"Yes, of course, you fool!" a taller man whispered back angrily, "That beast cannot be permitted inside the castle any longer! He is a danger to all of us, including the princess."
"B-but, sir, what will the youkai Lord of the Western Lands do when he comes back to find his son dead?" the other man asked in a trembling voice.
"Didn't you hear? He was done in by some dragon a few days ago." The man readied his bow and arrow to shoot at the little boy still oblivious to the danger. Before the other male had time to protest to his lord any longer, an arrow whizzed through the air heading straight for the young boy.
Little Inuyasha bent down to pick up his ball again and felt something rush over his head, making his long hair swish and his fuzzy ears twitch. He heard a 'twang' moments later and a gasp accompanied it.
"M-mother?"
The men gawked in astonishment as they watched their princess slowly slide to the ground, blood gushing out of her chest. Her beautiful features were contorted into a look of pain and confusion.
"Y-you've killed the princess!"
"No… no, it was that little monster! He moved so that it wouldn't hit him!" The man holding the bow denied angrily, a desperate look coming across his face.
"It doesn't matter! Let's just go before we're blamed!" And with that the men ran back into the woods as fast as they could.
"Mother?" Inuyasha asked the woman's still form in a wavering voice. The little boy approached the unmoving body, reaching out with trembling hands to turn his mother onto her back. Tears fell down his pale face as he saw crimson liquid flooding out of her chest where an arrow protruded.
"N-no! Mother!" he cried desperately as he shook his mother's silent cadaver. He collapsed and sobbed into the woman's twelve-layer kimono, pulling her limp arms around his own body.
.
Kagome flew up in her sleeping bag as she heard someone sobbing and muttering. Head swiveling wildly from side to side, she searched for the source of the heart-wrenching sound until her eyes landed on Inuyasha's tossing form.
She quickly stood from her spot on the ground and rushed across the clearing where they were all sleeping to kneel on the ground beside the hanyou's head. She reached out a hand to feel his forehead for fever and was worried when it was just as hot as when she'd checked it an hour ago.
The girl quickly dragged her bag over to Inuyasha and began frantically searching through it. Finally, she pulled out what she'd been looking for and opened the bottle of anti-venom. After pouring two pills into her hand, she reached over into her bag and pulled out a bottle of water.
"Come on, Inuyasha. Take this medicine," she whispered in a loving voice.
It was difficult to get him to swallow the pills while he was sleeping, sobbing, and tossing all at the same time but Kagome finally got the medicine down and settled down beside him to watch him sleep. I'll bet he's having a nightmare, the poor guy. It must be the fever.
Sitting up once again, Kagome went over to the other side of the hanyou's thrashing body and sat down to lean against a tree. She hesitantly put her arms under his and, with much effort, managed to pull the top half of his body into her lap.
Kagome blushed as, still asleep, Inuyasha immediately swung his arms around her waist and buried his face into her stomach. She had to keep from giggling as his breath tickled the sensitive skin of her tummy through her pajama top.
He seemed to stop wiggling and his tears ceased as he settled into her lap. I hope he doesn't get too mad at me when he wakes up.
.
Everything around Inuyasha's little sobbing form seemed to melt away into nothing, including his mother's cold body. Suddenly, he found himself kneeling on the beach looking off into the calm ocean. He would have thought it just a pond if he had been able to see the other side, but as it was, the water stretched or miles and miles. It was definitely an ocean, - the calm salty smell proved that - but Inuyasha could not spot a single wave. It was just tranquil and silent.
The hanyou felt a warmth slowly wrap around him like an invisible pair of arms. It was accompanied, he noticed, by the feminine sweet smell of vanilla and strawberries. He sighed contentedly as he recognized that unforgettable scent and fell into a peaceful sleep on the sand beside the soothingly calm sea.
Kagome…
