Author's Note: Well, this is specifically for my fan/buddy TheBigW. He wanted to know how Kikyo could just give up like she did in the story You Came Back to Me. So here is a Prologue to that story between Kikyo and Inuyasha. Enjoy!

I Can't Be With You nor Without You

So much for my happy ending. Kikyo sat deep in thought surrounded by her soul stealers. She needed to see Inuyasha once more to confirm what she pondered upon. The clay priestess wandered toward the village where he stayed with her reincarnation.

The dog boy smelled the air because there seemed something amiss. Kikyo's here, but why? He dropped the wood he had been collecting and raced over to find his former love.

"Inuyasha, I knew you would smell me and come. You haven't failed me yet," the cold girl stated.

"Kikyo, let's talk this over," Inuyasha retaliated.

"Talk what over? Have I missed something? I didn't know there was something to discuss," Kikyo replied covered with ice.

"It's not like we're dead…" Inuyasha tried to reason with her.

"Was it something I did? Was it something you said?" she questioned back, "Don't leave me hanging in a city so dead, held up so high, on such a breakable thread." Tears gathered under her dark eyes and threatened to drop on her pale cheeks.

"You were all the things I thought I knew and I thought we could be," he whispered to her, "You were everything, everything that I wanted. We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it. All of the memories, so close to me, just fade away. All this time you were pretending, so much for our happy ending." Kikyo just stared at the broken hearted boy in shock. Anger filled her features and the tears trailed down her pretty face.

"You've got your dumb friends, I know what they say! They tell you I'm difficult! But so are they! But they don't even know me! Do they even know you?" she shot back at the hanyou balling her fists.

"All the things you hide from me! All the shit that you do!" the fanged boy howled back. Frustration came over his body for what she said. They know me! Kagome knows me!

"You were all the things I thought I knew and I thought we could be," Kikyo cried out. She crumpled over and began to shed a river of tears, "It's nice to know that you were there. Thanks for acting like you cared and making me feel like I was the only one. It's nice to know we had it all. Thanks for watching as I fall and letting me know we were done." She spoke her last part and left broken and bewildered. His words still echoed in her mind months later.

Naraku was defeated a short time after her last confrontation with her love. She watched her reincarnated self from far away with Inuyasha. She loves him for who he is. I love him for who he would become. I love you Inuyasha, but I can't be with you. Days later the group of fighters gathered to celebrate their victory. She remembered what her hanyou had said that last meeting and felt the same way.

You were everything, everything that I wanted. We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it. All of the memories, so close to me, just fade away. All this time you were pretending, so much for our happy ending. She thought as she watched the new couple. I know what I have to do. She conjured up the rest of her courage and stepped from the safety of the foliage.
