Tired, weary and disappointed Rin watched as the girl and her friend got in a red Ferrari with some guy and drove off. The strange feeling, that struck her again, disappeared.

She followed the girl all the way to her school, spent half a day sitting on a bench at the opposite side of the street, waiting for her to come out. Rin hoped that the girl would go the same way she did in the morning and… alone. If so, she would have found a way to talk to her, but now… she didn't even had a chance to find out where the girl lived!

Rin sighed.

She could try to do it next morning.

But she was afraid, that there could be no next morning for her.

I have to think of something, she told herself, but what? Wait, there is one way… she could go to the street where she first noticed that girl. And try to concentrate on the feeling she got every time she saw her. If the girl lived in that area, there was a possibility to find her this way…

I have only one chance, she thought, but it's worth trying. And then a sudden thought struck her: wouldn't it be easier for her to… return? Return to what? To being nothing. Nothing more than a… pet.

It was always like that. Always being treated like a pet for amusement.

But she did run away from that, didn't she, Rin asked herself. Yes, she ran away when couldn't bear the feeling of being useless any more. And how many days she spent being alone before that? Her whole life from the time she could remember it.

And Rin suddenly realized that she should have done that earlier. Much earlier. Before this life made her so weak that could barely struggle anymore. And this escape was her last effort before apathy. She put all the strength that was left in her into it without understanding that it was too late for that.

Painfully late.

Rin smiled cheerlessly and rose from the bench. She couldn't allow herself to miss the only chance she had.

- You can't play cards with a face like that, Kag! I can read all your thoughts on it!

- Ugh, well read this! - Kagome made a grimace and stuck out her tongue. - Be-e-e-e!

Sango roared with laughter.

- I know! - she groaned. - It says "I was hit hard on the head when I was a child"!

- Freak! - Kagome threw a pillow at her.

They started a pillow fight. One of the pillows burst and a feather storm turned the room into a large bird's nest. The girls were lying on the floor too exhausted to move.

- Hey, Kagome, can I ask you one question?

- Yea, sure.

- Um-m-m… well…

- Wait, does it have something to do with applying to my conscience?

Sango laughed.

- Hell no! I know it's not even worth trying!

- Argh! - Kagome reached for a pillow.

- Easy! I was just kidding!

- Then go ahead and ask already.

Sango rolled on her back, watching her friend.

- What are you doing this for? I mean, this whole demon hunting thingy.

Kagome looked puzzled.

- Why do you ask?

- Well, you must have some reason for that… You know that demons killed my family and now hunting them is my… destiny. But what about you, Kagome? Why are you doing this?

Kagome thought the question over for some time and when she answered, her voice was so quiet, that Sango could barely hear it.

- I carry the burden of responsibility for the power that I posses. And I have a choice either to use it for good or… not to use it at all. But if I don't - who will? Someone has to do it…

- And you manage it real good, - Sango got up and looked out the window. - Geez, I didn't know I was so late already. What time is it, Kag?

Kagome dragged out her alarm-clock from under the bed.

- Ten thirty. Do you really have to leave?

Sango giggled.

- You always keep it there? Yea, gotta go. Have to clean the house.

Kagome raised an eyebrow.

- You always do it late at night?

- Duh, it's the best time for that, stupid.

They laughed and went downstairs.

Rin couldn't believe her eyes. It was impossible! At least, with her luck… But it was true. She knew it when she was that girl and her friend standing on the street, probably saying goodbye to each other.

Leaning against the wall of the lane, Rin felt weakness in her legs. The tension of the past days released her and she looked around with a new glance.

Night has fallen upon the city, turning on the streetlights. The air was fresh and cool. Everything was quiet and still. She took a few steps forward and lifted her head, gazing steadily at the dark-sapphire sky.

Then all of a sudden a black shapeless shadow flashed over the girl. Rin instinctively bent down. Her reaction was fast, but not fast enough. A large paw hit her the girl on the back and she fell to the ground.

- So, what are we gonna do tomorrow?

- Wanna go crash the mall? - suggested Kagome.

- Yeah, OK. I'll call.

- See ya!

Sango turned around, waving her hand.

Suddenly a long piercing scream came from the lane, making the girls stand rooted to the spot for a moment. The cry was repeated, now sounding weaker.

- Go see what it is! - shouted Kagome. - I'll get the bow!

Sango rushed to the side-street, running as fast as she could. She reached the lane and froze in terror.

Two large black infernal hounds with growling were slowly approaching a young girl, lying on the ground. She tried to get up and Sango noticed a wound in her left side. With a slight regret that she didn't have her boomerang, Sango jumped forward. Throwing back one of the hounds with a kick, she hit the other one and reached for the girl, helping her to get up.

The hounds were on their feet again, growling furiously. One of them jumped forward and fell to the ground, wounded with an arrow. Sango dealt with the second one and turned to the girl, who was still trembling.

- Let me see your wound! - she commanded.

- No, no, it's not that important, - the girl tried to smile, but instead let out a weak groan.

- What the hell happened here? - asked Kagome, stepping out of the shadow. The girls' eyes widened in surprise when she saw her.

Sango shrugged her shoulders.

- Infernal hounds. They attacked the kid. We came just in time.

Kagome looked at the girl with interest.

- Who are you? What is your name?

- I'm Rin…

- She's hurt pretty badly, - interrupted Sango. - We gotta do get her to my house right away.

Supporting her, Sango and Kagome led Rin out of the lane into the street.

Suddenly Kagome was alerted. She lifted her bow, peering tensely into the dark.

- What is it? - asked Sango.

- Something is approaching us. Something… large. I don't now what it is, but I can feel it.

- Well, I don't see a thing, - Sango skeptically examined the empty street and with a corner of her eye caught a sight of movement in the dark.

- Kagome! Run! - she shouted, but was already late.

Black shadows surrounded them and the girls heard silent laughter. Kagome lowered her bow.

- There are too many of them, - she whispered to Sango. - What do we do now?

- If only I had my boomerang, we could try to break through, but now… I wonder, what do they want here? I just can't believe they've found out were we live and now seek revenge!

- It is me they want, - suddenly murmured Rin. The girls looked at her in shock.

- But what the hell… - started Sango, but stopped.

The shadows parted and a young man stepped forward. He was all dressed in black and his long silver hair looked amazing on that. He smiled with an unpleasant dangerous smile, looking at the girls.

- Well, well, well. If it isn't Rin… Shouldn't you be with your master right now?

Kagome felt the girls tremble all over at these words. Then the cold amber eyes turned to her and Sango.

- So you are the ones who have been hunting down my servants? Too bad. Now I'll have to kill you… Rin, come here.

The girl didn't move and Sango, who was thinking about her wound, patted her hand.

- Go, - she whispered to her. - Or he'll kill you too.

- But…

- Don't worry, we'll get out of this, - added Kagome. - Go.

Rin took a few steps forward and stopped, looking hopelessly at the two girls. She thought, that there must be a way to help them

The silverhaired demon smirked, pulling out his sword. His golden eyes met Kagome's and he was surprised not to notice any fear in them. Only anger and fury. Maybe, he thought, she hoped to stop him with her arrows. They were useless against the power of Tessaiga. But it was too late to think that over. He lifted his sword.

- No!!! - Rin rushed forward, forgetting completely about her wound. She grabbed his hand and shouted. - No!!! You can't kill her! She is the Shikon no Tama!
