It was like a tsunami.
Shock seemed to fling the breath right out of her and Rin was suddenly pressed back up against the wall and the wet stone ground hard into her back and she was shivering all over and she would have thought that being smashed up against a wall like this by her master would have offered some kind of warmth but really, it didn't.
Really, it made her feel even colder than she had imagined it was possible to be, as if not just her clothes but her skin had been stripped away, leaving her shaking there in the dark. She didn't know what to do with her hands: they banged, flat, against the wall behind her and the gritty rock scraped her skin. Her knees were giving out; she was trembling all over. Without Sesshoumaru to hold her up she wouldn't be able to stand.
Rin felt as if her blood had thickened and it was taking huge, convulsive efforts of heart and breath to continue pushing it through her veins. Everything seemed dizzy and distant and painful. And a silent cry came out without her being able to help it: No, oh, please, no. Not this way.
Sesshoumaru let her go and stepped back.
- Rin, - he said, his voice soft and very deadly. - Look at me.
Rin slowly took her hands away from the wall. They were bloody where they had scraped against the bricks. She looked down at them with a dull fascination. Human blood. My blood. Worthless and not a big loss after all. Then she lifted her head with a great effort and looked at her master.
- Are you afraid of me? - he asked. His face impassive as that of the cold moon.
She shivered. Why this question, when the answer was clear - wasn't it what he wanted to achieve by doing all that to her.
- Yes.
- Is that so? And why?
- Because I belong to you.
- True, - said Sesshoumaru in a remote sort of voice. - But if told you that you are free to go, would you go?
She remained silent for a dizzy moment and then spoke through a tightened throat: “No”.
- Why?
A sudden weariness came over Rin and she had to lean to the wet cold wall not to fall down. She raised her eyes, looking at him, as he was still waiting for an answer. The night was so dark that she could see only the outline of his features, the shadows cast by his lashes, his amber eyes glowing with a strange light that was like the light of the moon on a cold autumn night.
She felt an ache inside herself, a sharp, chilly, sweet and piercing ache, and closed her eyes, and said.
- B-because… because I… l…
And before Rin could finish, her strength left her, a waved of dizziness came over the girl and she slowly sank to her knees, as the world around her turned black and silent.

The wind wasn't blowing here, and it was so quiet, that Kagome could hear her own breathing. From this point she could clearly see almost the whole city like a diamond necklace around night's neck.
They were standing under the bridge, rain rustling above their heads.
- Do you really want to know? - asked Inuyasha for the second time. His voice seemed as distant as the sounds of the city.
Kagome dragged her eyes away from the beautiful sight and turned to him.
- Tell me, - she said. - I need to know. You knew Kikyo from before, didn't you?
- Long ago… we were best friends, - he paused. - Even more than that.
Kagome swallowed.
- More?
- Yes, - said Inuyasha, his eyes on her face now, finding her own eyes, their gazes locking. - Everyone makes mistakes. And it was the biggest one I made… When you trust someone, it's hard to get over a betrayal.
- She… betrayed you?
- Well, maybe that's not the right word, but… - Inuyasha let out a short sigh which turned into a small white cloud in the cold night air. - Looking back to when we first started our business - Kikyo, Miroku and me - we were a real team, a great team. The business was dangerous, we had to face a lot problems, the road to the top was hard and we had to fight for it, but then one day we looked around and saw, that we had reached everything, we were on top of it all - power, business, money, everything. I became the Lord of the eastern demons, but it wouldn't be possible without Miroku and Kikyo's help.
- Wasn't that what you wanted to achieve? - asked Kagome, surprised by a tone of regret she had heard in his voice.
- It was… for Miroku and me it was enough. He got all the respect he wanted and I finally proved to Sesshoumaru that I wasn't a worthless hanyo, as he liked to put it. But Kikyo… she was hungry for power and didn't want to share it with anybody, especially with us. That was the time when she had an idea to deal with Naraku and take his place in the hierarchy of this city. She told me about her plan, but I… refused.
Kagome looked at him with big eyes.
- But… why? Didn't you… - she couldn't finish the phrase. But Inuyasha understood, what she meant.
- I tried to persuade her not to take this foolish step, because the it would break the fragile balance of power, and the consequences could be unpredictable. But she wouldn't turn back. We had a quarrel and soon after that she left. With that she put an end to every feeling we shared. That was what made me mad and I swore I would never even recall any memory of her. And then… and then we heard about her… death. It was told, that she tried to deal with Naraku on her own, but failed. Neither than, nor later I didn't believe it. All those years I knew she was still alive, - his face changed, as if he was far away with his thoughts now, and Kagome wondered, if he was still speaking to her or rather to himself. Inuyasha put his hands in pockets and lowered his head; his eyes were shadowed.
Kagome took a deep breath and reached to take Inuyashas hand. He turned his face to her and Kagome drew a sigh of relief - he seemed to be with her again. She wanted to tell him that the past didn't matter and now they had to live in the present, their future still unknown, but instead she heard herself ask in a cold tone:
- And after meeting her today? Do you still… have feelings for her?
- I… don't know, - Inuysha replied quite truthfully.
Kagome started - he didn't know? What did he mean he didn't know?! That wasn't what she expected to hear.
Inuyasha reached to touch her cheek, but she recoiled.
- Let us return, - she said tonelessly. - Miroku and Sango are probably waiting for us already.
Inuyahsa looked as he was going to say something, but than he bit hid lip and nodded.
Neither of them spoke as they were driving back to the club.

Rin was awoken when a ray of sunshine touched her cheek and then slowly moved to the girl's closed eyelids. A feeling of warmth came over Rin as she opened her eyes to find that it was early morning, golden rays were streaming through the window and she was lieing in bed, on top of covers in her clothes. She yawned sleepily and wanted to shift and continue to sleep, when she found out that she couldn't move. The rests of her sleep disappeared and Rin tilted her head, looking with dismay at a metal bracelet on her left wrist that was connected with a long chain with the bedpost.
Rin gasped and quickly stood up. The chain was long enough to do that and take one more step from the bed, but not more. The girl looked around - the room was unfamiliar to her, but from the window a line of mountains could be seen and Rin gasped again from a sudden guess - this could be Lord Sesshoumaru's private castle. She had been here only a few times, but remembered the gloomy landscape pretty well.
The question was - why on earth would master bring her here? And why this chaing? Ohh, the Lord was probably terribly angry with her! After all, what she did last night - going with Kagome and Sango to a night-club - could be considered as another escape.
In tried to recall yesterday's events, but could barely remember anything and her head still heart from all the drunken cocktails. But she did remember that furious passionate kiss and her lips still felt like a flame touched them. Master never did anything like that before, even while… amusing himself with her. Maybe, there was something behind it?
And last night Lord Sesshoumaru didn't seem to be angry it all, it looked more like he was… amused. Come to think of it, it seemed like he was up to something.
Rin sighed and looked at the metal bracelet on her wrist.
But maybe it was just another game. After all, wasn't she just a worthless human good only for playing with? But that seemed right. She owed her lord everything - her entire existence, her life, her soul. It all belonged to Lord Sesshoumaru, but recently Rin has been thinking that it would be fair to get something in return.
With fingertips Rin touched her lips and felt them curl into a little smile - she had dreamt for so long about it. Was it possible that…
The girl shook her head at the thought and returned to bed. Right now she could use some sleep for her headache to abate. All that was left for her now was to wait
