Chapter Eight
Inuyasha didn’t have to explain. Not exactly. She understood where he might want what was best for client. He had said that he’d told Sesshomaru that he would talk to her about the “couple million” deal. Sesshomaru had obviously thought that that meant he was going to get away with everything. Not with her still standing between the two. Her response had been a flat out “No” and Inuyasha couldn’t argue with that.
First of all, he would—naturally—want to beat her in the case. That was how things went. He’d want to bring Sesshomaru out as the winner; they’d still have to work together, though. Secondly, that “couple million” was almost the cost of their former house alone. Almost. So that “couple million” was out before it could even be started.
Honestly, for a Demon of Sesshomaru’s ranking, how stupid was he?
“I’m telling you, Miroku, if it wasn’t for the money, I’d be off this case before you could even blink.” And the Court hadn’t even came through, yet. Who knew dealing with Demons could be this difficult?
“I could have told you that.” Miroku folded his arms, leaning against the walled glass of her Office. He knew Kagome had this down, though. Kagome could do anything. She’d come out of this with her head held high and a smirk on her lips. “Your 3 o’clock will be here any minute…”
Kagome groaned. How could she have forgotten? She pushed back from her desk—she seemed to be working a lot more lately—and nodded. “Thanks.” Yea, how could she have forgotten that someone other than her parents was bringing Rin by her Office. She had to speak with the child, without her parents around. She didn’t exactly trust either Parent to not goad the child into saying what they wanted her to say.
She wasn’t expecting Rin to be so…normal. So small and so sweet. Those were the words that popped into her mind. She found it odd that two Demons would take such an innocent, sweet little girl into their keeping—
“You’re the one making my parents leave?”
The words were so sudden that Kagome blinked and then smiled weakly. She sank to her knees, balanced on her feet in front of the dark haired girl. “No, sweetie, I’m trying to help them.” That was the most honest thing she could think of to say. It became obvious that Rin did not approve of her parents’ Divorce. But Kagome couldn’t do anything about that. “Tell me about yourself—“
“They love each other.” Rin cut her off directly, that serene expression still on her face as she stared up at her.
“Ugh…”
“Why don’t you tell Ms. Higurashi how your day was, Rin?” The tall, dark haired woman at Rin’s side spoke gently, urging Rin forward.
Kagome smiled and stood, her attention going to the woman at Rin’s side. She lifted her hand, holding it out to the stranger. “Kagome Higurashi, as I’m sure you’re aware.”
“Sango Kurenso and yes, I’m aware of who you are. Rin’s a little upset over…this.” Sango paused, careful of how she phrased her words.
“Would you like to go sit in my Office, Rin? You can tell me all about your day. Would you like to sit in my chair? It spins.” Rin’s eyes lit at that, just as Kagome knew they would. Probably not the best of tactics, being that she’d be more interested in the chair than talking, but it was a start. She knew how to handle kids. She knew how to get them talking.
Kagome heard the creak of Miroku’s chair as they passed his Office on the way up but she ignored it. It didn’t take long for Rin to get comfortable and at Sango’s urgings, Rin was talking. She could tell Rin wasn’t comfortable with the thought of her parents splitting but Kagome knew she couldn’t ignore the questions she had to ask the child.
“Do you like living with your Parents?” She asked.
“Yes. Mommy lets me ride on her Feather and Daddy is always buying me dresses—“
“If you had to choose…which one would you want to live with? It’s just a question, honey, nothing more, ok?” When Rin didn’t answer, just turned her head and stared out the window, the look on her face going from happy to sad in an instant, Kagome sighed. “Rin..—“
“I like living with both of them…can’t we just stay like this?” Rin finally said.
Sango sighed and then hunched down beside the four-wheeled chair. “Honey, you know that some families have…problems. Well, ours is just a little…dysfunctional, yea?”
“But there weren’t any fights.”
Smart girl, Kagome thought. There hadn’t been any fights that Rin had seen or heard. She hated to see this sweet little girl torn apart by her parent’s problems.
God, she hoped Rin never got married.
Kagome stood and held out her hand to Rin, helping the little girl from the rolling chair. “Thank you, Rin. I hope we can be friends, huh?” She turned halfway and tugged forward a jar full of assorted candies. “Candy?”
That definitely perked Rin up because she dug in, her hand coming out full to bursting until Sango stopped her. Rin, sighing, walked out of the Office with three pieces of candy in her hand.
“We’ll have to do this again, won’t we, Rin?” Kagome called out, grinning as she waved. Rin nodded, flashing tiny white teeth. Such a sweet girl, really. But she was still going to be hurt over the split in the end. Kagome pulled the door to her Office closed and turned down the Hallway. Miroku was half out of his Office, staring at the empty front Entrance before he turned.
He smiled and hell, he was actually blushing. He sighed. “I think I’m in love.”
