InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ I'll Protect You ❯ I'll Protect You ( One-Shot )
[ A - All Readers ]
Inuyasha wasn't the most clever of guys. He never was good at expressing himself or any of his emotions. He preferred to keep it locked up inside. That way no one could hurt him. It would be hard to blame him really, his life put him through so much pain. Being a hanyou* destroyed most chances he ever had for happiness, even as a child. Not to mention the one person he thought really understood him and cared for him now only felt a strong hatred towards him.
So when suddenly you have people around you, who seem to care for you, how do you respond? He wasn't really sure how to deal with it. So he did what came natural. He was an ass. Yet none of them truly seemed to mind, and Kagome was always quite willing to argue back with him. That had shocked him greatly at first. Kikyo, she had never lost her temper. She was always calm, cool, in control of her emotions. This girl, this Kagome, that shared the same soul as his lost love, she was much different. Her every emotion was evident in her eyes, free for all to see. She let you know when she was happy, sad, angry, anything. It was something poor Inuyasha wasn't used to. Not even his mother was completely open about her emotions, she had hidden things from him to avoid his
pain.
His arguments with Kagome slowly changed. At first he'd yell at her just to make sure he didn't let her try to gain his trust. Over time he did it for the little things. The way her nose would crinkle up, and her eyes would light up with a passionate fire. Everything about this girl seemed to hold a passion. It seemed nothing about her was simple, and it made him long to know more. Of course he'd never admit that to anyone. He refused to admit it even to himself. He was constantly telling himself she was a stupid wench, a shard detector. Yet with time he had grown to care for the girl who's temper matched his.
During his time with her they had gained a few friends. First Shippo, the curious kitsune* that loved to pester Inuyasha. It hadn't taken Inuyasha too long to see the young fox as almost his own child. He was constantly amazed at Kagome's loving, motherly way with the boy. She was pretty young herself, as was he. How could she so easily take care of the kid as if he were her own? She was such a mystery to him sometimes, and it made her all the more alluring. He just couldn't grasp why she was so kind, him having such a horrible past. He couldn't ever imagine feeling so strongly after just meeting someone.
Then came Miroku. At first Inuyasha was horrified at the idea of letting the monk join their group. It had only taken a few moments in his company for them to notice his wandering hand. At the time Inuyasha had insisted he didn't want the monk around in fear of him stealing their shards again, but even he had to admit, if only to himself, that it was jealousy. He could convince himself that it was only because she resembled Kikyo, but deep down he knew that wasn't the case. It had taken a painful betrayal to realize it, but what he felt for Kikyo had never been love. For even in the case of new formed relationships, real love can not be broken so easily. He knew in his heart that Kikyo had merely been a companion. Miroku's wandering hand often brought to his attention that,
though awful to admit, he cared for Kagome in some way.
Last was Sango, and her demonic companion Kirara*. By this time Kagome had softened him up an extreme amount. He took pity on the poor demon slayer and let her join the group. Besides, he knew Kagome needed a female to talk to. Inuyasha knew that poor Kagome wouldn't be able to stand three males alone for too long, despite her cheerful kindness. So he allowed her to befriend the demon slayer. Kirara just came with the package, but he liked the neko* youkai*. She often helped him practice with the Tetsusaiga. Of course he'd never hurt Kirara, just to make sure he could use some
of his attacks.
So they'd all wander the Sengoku Jidai* in search of jewel shards, set up camp, and go to sleep. Kagome and Sango, and sometimes Shippo, would go off to bathe in the nearest spring. Miroku would always sneak of to peak at them, which of course Inuyasha followed. Never with the intention to look at Kagome, that always just kinda happened. He followed the lecher to watch out for the girls, and secretly to make sure he didn't look at Kagome. But somehow his eyes always wandered over to the beauty standing in all her glory before him. Her skin glistened with the water, and when it was a hot spring she would be tinted a lovely shade of pink. He wouldn't look long, after a few moments cursing himself for looking at her that way. After all, she was just a wench. Just the girl
that could see the jewel shards. Nothing more. So why look?
After the girls bathed everyone would get in the spot they planned on sleeping on and begin a nice conversation. Inuyasha preferred to sit himself in a tree and watch over the group in solitude. On some nights he would quietly decline Kagome's offer of sitting next to her to join in on their chat. Either way, his eyes would always wander to her, followed by his thoughts. She was so kind, so loving. She didn't care that he was a hanyou. She didn't care that Shippo was annoying at times. She didn't let Miroku's wandering hand bother her. She always listened to Sango. He never understood it.
One thing he did know for sure was she was in danger because of it. People just weren't like that in his time. They couldn't afford to be. He knew that Kagome was putting herself at great risk by being the way she was. She had such a sharp tongue, and her eyes always held a passion greater than many ever knew in a lifetime. And she could easily be taken advantage of. Her temper would be very dangerous to her when encountering a demon. Her caring, giving nature would cause her to fall into a trap easily. Though not anything like what he and Kikyo had faced. Her strong feelings would protect her from that. But what would protect her from the other forms of evils out there?
Many times during the night Inuyasha would think about this. He had promised to protect her, in a way, had he not? He told her to let him protect her. What about now? Was that a long term promise, or only until her job was done? He let his mind slowly sort through all his thoughts, hoping to find an answer.
One night as he was thinking he realized something. He couldn't let anything happen to this girl. She was too pure, to kind to be hurt. She shouldn't have to face the pain he had to go through, he wouldn't let her. He came to realize she was the light in his dark heart. And he finally allowed himself to really know he cared about her. At the time he wasn't ready to go any further, to even think about an emotion as strong as love. But he knew that she was special.
And as the girl slept peacefully below him, he let his whisper be carried away by the wind. A promise that would last an eternity.
"I'll protect you."
A small smile formed on the girls mouth, as she heard the promise in her dreams. She would never know for sure if it had really happened or not, but the promise was something she'd hold dear to her. Even if it was only a dream.
