Chapter 4: Through The Well
"How do you know this is going to work?" Inuyasha asked Kaede.
"I don't know if it will work, Inuyasha, the spell had never been used before." She replied calmly as she added ingredients to the pot cooking over the fire in her hut.
The Inuyasha group was in Kaede's hut, waiting for her to finish the potion that would trigger a spell to make Inuyasha, Kirara, and Shippo appear human for one month. Kaede suggested it when the group decided to get through the well. They thought they could pass through the well if they all took shards. Inuyahsa hadn't thought of the shards, because he hadn't needed them for traveling through the well before.
"It better work! I can't wear that stupid hat the whole time!" He said, referring to the baseball cap he was forced to wear every time he went to Kagome's time.
Kaede stirred the potion with a wooden spoon. Sango and Miroku were in the corner of the hut talking about Kagome's time. Kagome's time sounded very interesting to them, and Shippo and Kirara were just as excited. All of them were doubtful that the well would permit them to get through. They figured that if anyone was able to make it through, it would be Inuyasha. And Shippo and Sango both desperately wanted to be with their friend again.
"Finished." Kaede said as she poured the potion into three bowls. Slowly, she put the same amount of potion in each bowl and set them on the ground. She motioned for everyone to gather round.
"You three," she motioned towards Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kirara. "Must drink all of the contents of your bowl. Every last drop."
Kirara cautiously walked over to her bowl and started licking the potion. Of course she wasn't going to quickly so she transformed into her demon form and continued licking and slurping the potion, this time in bigger quantities. After Kirara transformed, Shippo and Inuyasha picked up their bowls and put it to their mouths. Inuyasha started drinking. Shippo took a glance at Inuyasha before sipping his potion. Kirara was almost done by the time Inuyasha finished, and Shippo had only a few drops left. Everyone of them made sure to get every last drop.
Sango and Miroku just watched as the two demons and half-demon drank. They all didn't know what to expect. Kaede was the only one who knew what was going on.
When everyone was done, Shippo and Inuyasha set their bowls down and waited, and Kirara untransformed. Sango and Miroku watched for something to happen. They waited as Kaede calmly put her things away and sat back down.
And waited.
And waited.
Until finally, Inuyasha couldn't take the suspense any longer.
"Well? What's going on? What's supposed to happen?" He put his hands up in the air in motions to direct his point.
"Have patience Inuyasha." Kaede said with a smirk.
Just as Inuyasha was about to protest, he suddenly felt funny. A sensation washed over him and all of his senses went numb. He could no longer hear the clattering noise from outside the village nor could he smell the familiar scents of his companions. He looked down at Shippo and Kirara and saw that they were being surrounded by strange blue auras and lights. He looked at himself to see that he too was surrounded by a blue aura. He glanced at Miroku and Sango who were watching amazed. He looked at Kaede to see that she was smiling, observing how they were suddenly beginning to transform.
He looked at his hands. His claws were growing duller and duller until they became human nails. He moved his tongue along the back of his teeth to feel that his canines were shrinking down to a normal human size and the razor sharp points that he called fangs were no longer there. He felt the ears on the top of his head slowly lower down until he had an ear on each side, and the triangular shaped ears had molded into a different shape. He looked down at a lock of hair as the black color started at the roots and slowly made it's way down to the tip. He looked at Shippo whose tail was curving into a ball and shrinking. His paws and his feet were losing fur and becoming human. Shippo pointed ears were no longer pointed. Inuyasha could tell that Shippo was testing to see if his fangs were there but found none. He turned to Kirara to find that her two tails were becoming one, and the black marks on her face and body were disappearing.
He turned to Shippo again. The lights around them were beginning to die down. When he saw Shippo, all he saw was a short 10-year-old human boy with auburn hair. Not a fox with Fox Fire or super senses of demon, just a human boy. And Kirara wasn't the demon companion that had served Midoriko, she was now just a small, cream colored kitten.
Shippo stared at his hands and feet. He looked at his human nails with awe. He looked behind him, then stood up and looked under him.
"It's gone!" He said smiling. "My tail's gone! I'm human!" He started jumping up and down before he ran over to Kaede and happily said, "I'm human Kaede! I'm human!"
Kaede smiled and patted his head. Sango looked at Kirara as she lifted her tail in the air to see that there were no black markings, and her second tail was gone. Kirara meowed and happily jumped into Sango's lap. Sango smiled and pet her.
"How long does this last again?" Miroku asked Kaede.
"A few weeks, a month at the most." Kaede said as Shippo ran back to Inuyasha.
"Inuyasha! Your eyes are brown again!" He said happily.
"Feh! Of course they are! They're always brown when I'm human!" He said crossing his arms and sitting Inuyasha style.
Shippo started dancing around the room. "I don't know why you hate being human Inuyasha!" He said as he did a cartwheel. "I like it! I LOVE not having a tail!" He smiled and ran over to Kirara and pet her.
"Heh, try fighting a demon while you're human! And you weren't much of a help when you were demon!"
Shippo thought for a second.
"Miroku and Sango fight good, and they're human." He said with a smaller smile.
"So? She's trained to kill demons, and he's fought demons practically his whole life!"
"So have YOU!"
"It's still better when I'm HALF-demon!" Inuyasha raised his voice.
"Calm down you two." Kaede waved her hand. Everyone in the room looked at her. "This will only last a month, and you're here wasting time." Even though it was early in the morning, Kaede thought they had better hurry.
"Well? What are we waiting for?" Miroku said as he got up, he was very happy for the excuse to end the arguing.
"Yes." Sango said as she stood with Kirara still in her arms. "We should get going."
"Fine with me." Inuyasha said getting up.
"YAY! We're going to see Kagome!" Shippo jumped up and down.
"Come on you little runt!" Inuyasha said as he scooped him up and put him on his back.
"Are we ready?" Miroku asked.
"Now more than ever." Sango said.
^_^
"All we have to do is jump down?" Sango said fingering the shard in her fingers.
"Yes, that's what Kaede said." Miroku told her as he fingered with his own shard.
"All of us will be able to go right?" Inuyasha asked.
"I hope so." Sango said.
"Got your shard Kirara?" Shippo asked playing with his own.
"Meo-" The shard fell out of her mouth and she had to jump down out of Sango's embrace to pick it up. She jumped back into Sango's arms and just nodded. Sango laughed a little.
"Alright then," Inuyasha said. He jumped up on the edge. "Let's go."
Sango sat on the well and swung one leg over. Shippo was still on Inuyasha's back, Kirara in Sango's arms. Mirokus sat on the edge, legs dangling in the well.
"How far is the fall?" Sango asked. "I mean, until we land, if we do get sent there."
"I dunno," Inuyasha said. "Usually never took more than a minute. Ready?"
The group nodded, and Inuyasha jumped. Sango swung her other leg over and slipped down, careful of her boomerang. Miroku slid off the edge and fell down the well. All of the Inuyasha members were enveloped in a bright light show. Amazing and surprising everyone but Inuyasha.
"Do you see this every time?" Sango asked in amazement.
"Yeah." Inuyasha responded.
Shippo glanced around. He thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
"Wow..." Shippo said dazed.
Inuyasha heard him and gave a little smirk. The lights were dimming and he could see the bottom of the well.
"Almost there." He said.
When they reached the bottom of the well they all looked around.
"That.. was...AWESOME!" Shippo yelled.
Everyone smiled. Sango glanced up.
"Look!" She pointed up at the shrine's roof over their heads.
"We made it!" Miroku smiled.
"We're in Kagome's time!" Shippo jumped off Inuyasha's back and tried to get up the wall.
Inuyasha laughed. "Uh, Shippo, there's a ladder right over there..." He pointed to the ladder that Kagome's family had put up.
"Ooh." Shippo said. He raced over to the ladder and ran up. "Gotta see Kagome, gotta see Kagome..." He chanted.
"Do you know if Kagome is here?" Miroku asked a smiling Inuyasha.
"No," He frowned. "Can't smell her anymore, remember?"
'I forgot about that...' Inuyasha thought. 'I can't smell...Kagome.'
"Oh, yeah, slipped my mind." The monk smiled a guilty grin.
"WHOA!" They heard Shippo's voice from above. He was out of the well and staring at something. "This place is HUGE!"
Sango, Miroku, and Kirara looked at Inuyasha, looking for answers. Inuyasha chuckled.
"She lives in a shrine."
"Oh." They all said.
One by one they all climbed the ladder and everyone but Inuyasha marveled at the scenery. The first thing Shippo noticed outside was the God tree.
"Wow! Look! Inuyasha's tree!" He pointed.
"It's grown." Miroku said gaping at everything in sight.
"Duh, it's been 500 years." Inuyasha said.
"Is that Kagome's house?" Sango said pointing to the biggest building on the grounds, which in fact, happened to be the Higurashi's home.
"Yep." Inuyasha said as he took off running for Kagome's front door.
Everyone followed, smiling.
Inuyasha knocked.
No answer.
"Kagome!" Shippo yelled as he stood next to Inuyasha.
No answer.
"Do you think that maybe she isn't home?" Sango asked.
Inuyasha sighed.
He knocked again.
No answer.
'Come on, come on.' he thought.
Still silence.
Inuyasha groaned.
"What do we do now?" Miroku asked. None of the cast members were smiling anymore.
"Only one thing we can do." Inuyasha said. He put his hand on the handle and turned it slowly. It was unlocked. He slowly opened the door a crack and peeked in, he didn't see anyone.
"You're breaking in?" Shippo asked.
"Why not? I've done it before?" He said, opening the door all the way.
"Won't you get in trouble?" Shippo asked.
"Nah." Inuyasha said confidently.
They all stepped into the house.
"Wow..." Sango, Miroku, and Shippo said in unison.
"Now remember," Inuyasha turned to look at them. He said with a stern face "DON'T touch ANYTHING!"
They all nodded.
"Okay," Inuyasha said. "Sango, you go look for her upstairs." He pointed to the staircase. "Shippo, you look in the kitchen." He pointed in the direction of the kitchen.
"Kich-in?" Shippo asked.
"Oh, um, where they keep all their food and cook."
Shippo's eyes lit up.
'Hmm, maybe Shippo in the kitchen wasn't such a good idea.' Inuyasha thought. 'O well.'
"And Miroku, you look in the other rooms. Kirara, go look outside. I'll check the living room." He sighed. "Don't touch a thing! Okay? Let's go."
Inuyasha headed towards the living room and the rest went to their assigned locations.
'Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.' Inuyasha thought. 'Feh.' He shook his head. 'What's the worst that could happen?'
^_^
Shippo searched and searched until he finally found a room that looked like a 'kitchen'.
"Kagome?" He called. "Ka~go~me!" He looked around. There was a table, a couple of chairs, a giant white thing with two doors, and lots and lots of doors on the walls (cupboards). "Kagome? Where are you?" He called again. He jumped up onto the counter and opened two of the (cupboard) doors. "Kagome?" He asked a cereal box. He looked inside and didn't see anything. He didn't even bother to close the doors before he went on to the next two. He searched every cupboard and found nothing but candy, which he gratefully started eating. He dragged the bag of candy on the floor as he headed to the giant white thing.
'It's big enough to fit her inside, right?' He asked himself.
He opened up the larger bottom door.
"Brrrrr..." He said. Then his eyes widened. "Food..." He started digging in, with the bag of candy still in his hand. He jumped up onto a bottom shelf and was so busy with the carrots and cookies that he didn't even notice the door close.
^_^
Sango climbed the stairs. As soon as she reached the top she saw a giant hallway with 5 doors.
'This shouldn't be too hard.' She thought.
She went to the first door. It had a black and yellow sticker on it with funny pictures on it.
'What do these mean?' She asked herself as she looked at a "CAUTION" sign.
Author's note: Because Kagome is in America, she can speak English, and so can Souta, Mom, and Gramps. I'm making it so the IY gang can speak English too, but Miroku is the only one that can read it. Okay? Read!
Paying no mind to the sign on the door she went inside.
And instantly regretted it.
The room had a horrible smell, like rotting food or something dirty. Everywhere she looked she saw clothes sprawled out over the room, pillows, blankets, and sheets were all in a pile on the bed. It looked like the room didn't even have a floor.
Sango closed the door and carefully walked through the room, making sure to step over big things. She unfortunately stepped on a remote control. A giant black box in the corner of the room suddenly turned on, scaring the daylights out of Sango.
"Aah!" She yelped and turned around to see a man trapped in a box. The man was talking to her.
"Now, if you buy my new product, 'Instant Miracle-Hair-Grow', you'll instantly grow hair, and your bald days will be over!"
"But," Sango said confused. "I'm not bald."
"Just call my number, 1-800-555-HAIR! That's right 1-800-555-HAIR! Call now, and we'll add an extra surprise gift in it for you!"
"But I don't want it!" Sango told the man (which by the way, was bald).
She looked around the room, and accidentally stepped on the remote again. The man was gone and now in his place was a woman talking to another woman.
"Now, Ally, tell us how you feel about this." The first woman asked the second woman.
Sango had never seen a woman like that before. She had very dark skin, and she wondered if there were more people like that.
"Well, Oprah," The second woman sniffed. "I, *sob* just *sniff* want it to stop!" The second woman burst into hysterical sobs.
Sango leaned forward in order to see the people better but instead, she accidentally stepped on the remote, again. The box turned to MTV2 where they were doing a music video from 'Good Charolette, The Anthem'. Instantly Sango rushed her hands up to cover her ears. She looked around for a way to stop it. Just as she was considering breaking it in half with her boomerang, she saw a smaller black box by her feet. She carefully reached down and picked up. She pressed a button and it got louder.
"AH!" She yelped.
She pressed a different button and it got quieter. She pressed another button and it changed the channel to a picture of the atomic bomb hitting Japan in WWII and blowing up causing a big 'BOOM'. She gasped and fell to the floor with her hands over her head shaking. She looked up to see that nothing was out of the ordinary. She touched another button on the remote then went back to her position on the floor with her hands on her head. She looked around and the only thing that was different was that she was watching the two women again. She saw a red button on the smaller black box and pushed it. The box went black and the two women, the big blast, and the man who wanted her to buy something were all gone.
"I got to get out of here." She said. She put the remote on the bed and walked out of the room. She let out a sigh of relief.
She carefully walked over to the second door. She opened it a crack and saw that this room was clean. Very clean. She stepped inside and looked around. Against one wall there was a bed, neatly made, and a Mirror across from it. There was another one of those black boxes, but to much of Sango's relief the smaller black box was next to the bigger one. She looked around.
"No Kagome here." She said as she walked back out the door and headed to the next door.
She opened it to find another clean room. But the room was covered in... ofudas? They didn't look like they were put up properly and Sango doubted if they would work. All around the room there were pictures of Buddha and demons, and the ofuda charms. Sango didn't see Kagome and headed back out. She walked into the fourth room and gasped.
This room was a bright white and had millions of things she had never seen. She walked over to a chair. The chair was white and it had a hole in it (hint, hint). She had no idea why Kagome's family would need such a thing. She saw a little metal handle at the top and decided to push it. Suddenly, the water in the chair swirled around and was being drained into the hole. Sango gasped and jumped back to watch in amazement. She looked at little room that had a curtain for a door (shower). She pulled back the curtain and saw a drain at the bottom. The floor of this room was different than the one it was in. She looked on the wall and saw something metal stick out of it, on each side of it there was a knob. Out of curiosity, she turned one knob that was labeled with a weird picture 'C'. Instantly water came from the metal thing, and Sango was amazed. She turned the other knob, and more water shot out of the metal thing. She turned off the second knob. When she tried to turn off the first knob, she turned it the wrong way, and the water wouldn't turn off.
'O well,' she thought. 'I'll just fix it when we see Kagome.'
She walked out with the water running to the fifth door. She opened it up to see a very clean room.
'To call it clean would be an understatement.' Sango thought.
There was hardly anything in the room. There was a bed, with a plain pillow and blanket, and then there was another box thing, and a mirror on the wall, and dresser opposite of the bed. She looked around, nothing was on the walls, unlike the other rooms. The other rooms had paintings, or pictures, or ofudas, this had nothing. Something on the mirror caught her eye.
There were pictures. She walked over to the mirror and saw the pictures from Kagome's 'camera'. Sango remembered Kagome bringing the 'camera' to their time. She said she wanted to take their picture, and then showed it to them the next time she came back. There were three on the mirror.
One was of all of them by the tree, and Kagome said that it was on 'timer', so that's why it was slanted. She remembered seeing that one before. Sango saw that in the picture she was smiling an innocent smile with Kirara in her arms, while Miroku had a goofy grin on his face along with a red hand print. Sango laughed. She saw that Shippo was on Kagome's shoulder, smiling happily. Kagome was smiling her cheery smile, as usual, and Inuyasha was shooting death glares at Shippo because his tail had just gotten in his face. Sango laughed again.
The second picture was of her, Kagome, and Shippo. She and Kagome were standing side by side, smiling happily, and Shippo was in Kagome's arms sleeping. This one was also slanted because Miroku had taken it and it was his first time with a 21st century camera.
The last one Sango couldn't take her eyes off of. It was of Kagome and Inuyasha. They were both standing on a cliff, with water down below, Kagome was looking at the sunset, and Inuyasha was looking at Kagome. Sango knew it was sunset because of the colors. Sango didn't remember them there, and she figured that Miroku had taken it, because it was slightly slanted. Sango guessed that Miroku probably did it to embarrass Inuyasha or something, but it was a beautiful picture. Kagome was smiling happily at the sky, one arm relaxed, and the other holding her other arm. Inuyasha was staring at Kagome with his arms crossed and in his regular position. But this time, he didn't look so tough. His shoulders were relaxed more, and he wasn't so tense. And instead of a scowl on his face like he usually did, he had the warmest of smiles on his face.
Sango couldn't help herself from smiling. She missed Kagome a lot, and she could only imagine what Inuyasha and Shippo were feeling. Sango took the three pictures and slid them into the front of her kimono. She sighed and glanced around the room.
"About time to head downstairs." She said.
Then she heard screams.
^_^
"Great!" Miroku said throwing a shoe of him and getting a coat of his head. "Of all the places I have to look, it's the closets and other rooms!" Miroku stood up, causing three pairs of sneakers and a mop to fall to the ground. He tried stuffing everything back into the closet but it was hard work. If one shoe fell, two more would fall. If he put it back in, another one would fall. "How many shoes does the family have?" Miroku asked himself.
When he finally stuffed everything back in, he pushed with all his might to shut it. Things were bulging out the sides, and Miroku kept having to start over. When he finally got it closed, he let out a sigh of relief. Then the door started to move and it opened again, but Miroku caught it just in time. With every ounce of strength he had, he pushed the door shut. With his back against the door, he sank down to the ground and sighed.
"Finally." He said. Then something caught his eye. "Oh, no." he groaned. There in the corner of the hallway, was a white shoe. "No, not again." He said. He went over to it and picked it up. "Now where..." he trailed off as he saw an open window. "A ha!" He said. He walked over to the window and looked around outside. Nothing. He let out an evil chuckle before he chucked the shoe away from the house. The shoes landing was greeted by an angry once-demon-now-normal-cat cry. Miroku cringed and frowned, before running away from the window.
"Ahem. Now I guess would be a good time to go see how the others are doing."
He whistled to himself as he headed towards the living room, but he stopped when he heard a scream.
^_^
Inuyasha sniffed the entire room.
'Darn, I can't make out any of their scents.' He sighed.
He looked around. He had been in here a million times, but now that he didn't have his usual senses, it just didn't feel right. Then, his non-demon hearing heard something move in the room.
"Who's there?" He asked threateningly.
There was a rustling sound, and Inuyasha went to the side of a couch to see what it was.
"What the-" He started off.
"AAAah! BURGURLAR! *BAM* BURGURLAR! *BAM* GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! *BAM* HELP!" A 13-year-old boy was swinging a cooking pan around, hitting Inuyasha in the head numerous times.
"Aah! Cut that out-OW-will ya? Ah!" Inuyasha covered his head as he sat on the ground with a million bumps on his head.
The boy stood over him, holding onto his cooking pan with both hands, and had the pan raised over his head as if he was going to strike. Truth be told, he looked dangerous.
"WHY? YOU'RE A BURGURLAR!" He yelled.
"No I'm not!" Inuyaha said looking at him.
"Then why did you sneak in? HUH?" The boy got ready to strike again.
"Cause no one answered!" Inuyasha said defensively.
"Cause I'm not supposed to answer the door!" The boy hit Inuyasha again.
"HEY!" Just as the boy was about to crash the pan down on Inuyasha's head again, Inuyasha's reflexes grabbed the boy's hands.
"Aah!" The boy shrieked.
Inuyasha looked at the boy closely.
"Souta?" Inuyasha looked at him.
"Aah!" Souta jumped back dropping the pan. "How do you know my name?"
"It's me," Inuyasha pointed at his chest. "Inuyasha."
Souta looked at him.
'He's wearing the fire-rat kimono, but...'
"Where's your dog ears? And silver hair?"\
"I'm human." Inuyasha explained.
Souta gasped.
"For a month, though. Instead of my once-a-month transformation, me, Shippo, and Kirara are normal. See?" He pulled at one of his human ears.
Souta still didn't believe him.
"If you're Inuyasha, prove it." Souta crossed his arms.
"P-prove it?" Inuyasha stammered. "How am I-" Then a thought crossed his mind. Inuyasha crossed his arms and looked at Souta with a smirk. "You can always tell your sister to say 'sit'." He lifted up his necklace to show Souta.
"Woah..." Souta's eyes got bigger. "It reallly is YOU! This is so cool! We haven't seen you in 4 years!" Then realization hit Souta. "Uh, sorry for, um, hitting you..." He pointed to all the bumps on Inuyasha's head.
"Yeah." Inuyasha said rubbing one particular large bump.
"What's wrong?" Sango came running in.
"What's going on?" Miroku came in from a hallway.
The two noticed Inuyasha and a boy were talking, they also noticed Inuyasha's bruises.
"Eh, everything alright in here?" Miroku asked.
"Yeah, just talking to Kagome's younger brother Souta." He pointed at Souta who waved a little.
"Ooh, so your Souta. Hello, I'm Sango." Sango said, remembering everything Kagome told her about her family.
"Hello, I'm Miroku." Miroku said.
"Hey." Souta said shyly.
Then, sudden realization hit Sango.
"Uh, guys?" Sango said glancing around. "Where is Kirara *Miroku stiffens but it goes unnoticed* and Shippo?"
