InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ I Remember You ❯ New Neighbors ( Chapter 3 )
Chapter 3
She woke up panting. Her entire body felt like it was out of breath. She could feel pools of sweat running down her face. The room was hot and she felt hotter.
'It was only a dream,' her mind snickered.
Visions of monsters had plagued her all night. They were the same dreams as she had been having for the past three weeks. Monsters who had long, sharp fangs, claws as a large as a person, and they all seemed to want to kill her. She remembered being chased, clawed at, even injured by some of the heinous beasts.
"STUPID BRAIN! LET ME GET SOME SLEEP!!!" she screamed into her tiny room. Rage poured over her and in an attempt to chase away the monsters of her dreams she grabbed her pillow from behind her and began to smack herself in the head with it.
The monsters never went away and all that she succeeded in doing was give herself a headache. Yet, that gave her an odd sense of satisfaction. "That'll show you!" Kagome scoffed at her brain.
But now she had a headache. "Stupid brain," she grumbled.
She threw off her covers to go and get some Tylenol.
And instantly pulled them back up.
Her room was freezing! She had lived there for about a five days and she had yet to repair her bedroom window. Or, better yet, have her landlord get the window repaired.
"Stupid window-stupid brain-gotta wake me up in the middle of the night-make me cold-freeze my patooie off-," Kagome began her characteristic spiel of not so harsh cussing. She did that a lot since she had moved to Tokyo. As she grumbled in the most deplorable language she knew she ripped the top blanket off her bed, wrapped it around herself, and ran to the bathroom. "wanna go home-stupid head-stupid monsters-i'll bite them back if the try to bite me again-"
She turned on the light to the beige little room. She hadn't unpacked anything from her bathroom supplies except for toilet paper and toothpaste. She hadn't even unpacked her toothbrush. But her finger smelled minty so she was happy enough.
Digging through the box labeled Bathroom she came up with girly supplies, more toilet paper, mouthwash, her toothbrush... Hey! Her toothbrush!, and bathing products. But no medicine.
Another chain of abominable cursing began as she went to get her shoes on. There was an all night grocery story right next to the apartment building. She quickly committed herself to going to it. Anything was better than keeping her darned headache and she'd be danged if she let her brain get the better of her! "No good medicine-brain can wake me up but not remember my stupid stuff-dumb brain-I should do drugs!-that'd show you!-I'll get you one brain cell at a time," she tied her shoes and laughed evilly at her brain. Then she stopped laughing as her headache got worse. Back to grumbling," dumb brain-I can laugh if I wanna laugh-."
Now dressed in a stylish combination of running shoes and a pink flowered quilt, she was ready to go. On her way out she grabbed some money from her purse and locked her door.
The first thing she noticed when she got to the hallway was that someone was moving in two doors down from her. Boxes and other large objects lined the floor in front of the apartments room. Two tall men with black hair were carrying the items in from the hallway. Both were dressed completely in black.
She really didn't want to go passed the men in her current condition but the elevator was in that direction. The stairs were in the other direction, but going up and down 13 flights of steps in a blanket did not sound appealing.
Deep breath.
And go...!
She walked swiftly and noticed that they had stopped working when they had noticed her approach. She didn't blame them. She'd probably stare at a girl in a quilt and running shoes too.
'Ok Kagome focus.... Its a brand new quilt. Be proud of your quilt! Pink flowers are nice. Pink flowers are nice. Pink flowers are nice...'
"Kagome!"
Kagome had been so engrossed in her mental pep talk that she hadn't noticed she had cleared the moving area. But not even 'pink flowers are nice' could distract her enough to not recognize her own name being called.
She slowly turned around to see who it was that knew her name. She had met some of her neighbors, but none of them really liked her well enough to call her name out in the middle of the night. And the voice had been feminine so she knew it couldn't have been one of the movers.
Just as she had finished turning around a body slammed into her. The body was definitely female and had its arms wrapped around Kagome's neck in a tight hug. The force of the impact knocked Kagome off balance and the two went sprawling onto the floor, the strange girl on top of her.
The hugging never stopped and when Kagome finally found her breath and her senses she asked, "umm do I know you?"
The girl's body suddenly became very tense and she sat up immediately. Kagome's blanket had fallen during the descent to the floor, so all that was left was a girl in only a long baby blue shirt being straddled by another girl dressed entirely in tight black apparel. The scene might have had seemed slightly sexual if had been anyone else but Kagome.
Kagome heard one of the movers giggle with glee.
Then a sound of something like a smack.
The girl on top of her blushed and got up. She then extended a hand to Kagome to offer her help up. Kagome, being careful not to expose more skin than she figured she had already flashed, gathered her quilt around her and accepted the hand.
After getting up and checking to make sure all her parts were sufficiently covered, she looked back to the woman who had taken her down. She was a whole head taller than Kagome and had black hair tied up in a high ponytail. She wore tight black pants, black cluncky boots, and a tight, black long sleeve turtleneck. But what caught Kagome's attention was that she had glowing brown eyes that seemed to be really intent on her. One thing she knew for sure was that she had never seen this girl before in her life.
"Do... I know you?" Kagome repeated. She was horribly confused.
"My name is Sango," the girl told Kagome stiffly. She stared at Kagome, almost as if to see if the name meant anything to her. It didn't.
Kagome met the girls reply with a vacant, confused stare. Sango sighed and lowed her head to stare at the floor. She seemed suddenly sad. "Sorry... I get a little emotional sometimes. My name is Sango. I am moving in here tonight. I just met that gross guy who says he's my landlord and he told me that someone my age lived two doors down from me. I just got excited because I don't really know anyone here and I have to start college soon..." the tall girl rambled on, trying to make amends for her actions.
Kagome, who had made no real friends since she had moved to Tokyo, smiled. She had no suspicious bone in her body and she understood how the girl could feel that way. School started in about a week and Tokyo was a big city to be alone in. She stopped the girl short, "Hehe its okay. I understand. I get a little emotional sometimes too."
At this point she noticed the two darkly garbed movers were staring at them. One was looking at her with intense violet eyes and the other was staring at the both of them with a dreamy look in his eyes. He was also rubbing the side of his head where a large bump seemed to be forming.
Sango noticed her attention on the two guys. "Don't mind them. They're idiots," she giggled.
The looks on both the men's face changed as they heard Sango's words. The one with violet eyes crossed his arms and gave an undignified "HUMPH". The other blinked a couple of times then took his hands to pose in a meditative and wise manor.
Kagome giggled.
The man with violet eyes quirked an eyebrow at her. "Oi, genius. Where you going dressed like that?"
Kagome's laughter abruptly stopped as she remembered her award winning outfit. Her face turned pinker than the flowers that adorned her quilted gown.
"Um.. yeah where are you going Kagome?" Sango added in a confused voice.
The blush on Kagome's face became deeper and she stuttered out, "He, he I h-had a h-headache."
The man who had caused her this embarrassment walked up to her and stuck his face infront of hers so that the two were merely inches apart. "Do you always pretend to be a walking bed when you have a headache?"
Kagome's embarrassment faded.
Kagome's anger flared.
"There is a grocery store right next door, I will have you know!" she huffed. "And my head hurt to bad to waste time and change clothes!" She stuck her tongue out at him.
"Does it still hurt?" he asked.
She blinked at him. And blinked at him. And blinked at him.
She just wasn't expecting that question. It was then that she realized that her head didn't really hurt so much anymore. So she blinked again. "Umm.. I guess not..."
"Good. Then why don't go back to bed? No one wants to see you in just a shirt and a a quilt running around Tokyo."
"Hey! What's that mean?!!"
"Oi!!!. Use your brains idiot! ! A girl running around in Tokyo without pants?! Do you know what could happen to someone like you?!"
The bright blush that had disappeared with anger came back to tint Kagome's cheeks pink. But she kept the anger in her voice, "What do you mean 'someone like me'?"
He stopped. And blinked. And blinked. "Keh!" he said once he got back control of his eyes. "I meant someone that was stupid enough to go out pantless! Idiot!"
Kagome lost her comeback at the obvious point he made. Dang her brain! It had gotten back at her for the pillow hitting! Just when she had thought she won too...
A minute later Kagome had mad no move to respond to the man. His patience gave up and took her by the hand. And led the unresponsive girl back to the room where she had come from. His hand around hers was gentle yet firm.
He stopped them outside her door. From down the hall Kagome heard a female voice telling her to come down and visit her sometime soon.
Kagome was still in shock from what she had almost done and still intent on giving heck to her brain for making her do what she almost did. When she found herself staring at her apartment door she reached for her keys, that were hidden in her left shoe, with the hand not being held by the stranger's hand.
She never noticed that he had that he had kept her hand in his till he had closed her door and made sure she was securely in her room. Safe and sound.
