InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ I've Got Your Back ❯ Chapter Two ( Chapter 3 )

[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]

Ok, I wanted to clear up some things in this chapter. First off, Kagome was nine when met Inu Yasha. He was about the same age as her, whether you decide visually older or younger. You don't remember everything you did years ago… especially if it meant jumping into a mysterious well and meeting a half demon. Well. All is explained in this chapter. Thanks for giving me a flash back idea. ^.~ (Note: I'll reply to all detailed questions and comments in my reviews! But thank you to all of those who simply let me know they 'love, love, love it!' ^.^)

Chelle86 (fanfiction.net) - I'm loving the story! The first chapter when they met for the first time was great, and this chapter was just as good! Hope I get to read more of it soon! I don't get exactly why they don't remember each other though? (^-^)

- Thanks a lot! I'm glad you looked up my new fic, Chelle! I love all your reviews. And to answer your question, read this chapter. I guess it wasn't as obvious as I thought. I just know I don't remember every thought up 'dream' when I was kid. I figured it be hard for them because it would be hard for me… logically.

The_Magician (fanfiction.net) - That was so good! Very cute, too. Is Kikyo still alive, or dead? I hope dead. Update soon! I will look forward to it.

- People always misunderstand that the reason she's such a bitch in the normal storyline is because she's not really herself. The witch remade her with all of the malice Kikyo had in her soul. There was nothing of kindness really left. Especially for Inu Yasha or Naraku. But, to answer your question. No, she will not be in this fanfic. I'm doing something totally different. Thank you for the question, though. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

To all of those on mediaminer.org that have gave me reviews… Thank you so much. Your input is great. It makes me want to continue writing as much as possible. I hope you continue to read.

~ Chapter Two ~

She blinked at the question, lowering the bow as he stared at her. How had she known his name? He hadn't told it to her… how? Why did this all feel like the steps to an old dance she once agreed to with a stranger. She gazed at him. Everything about this … Inu Yasha was so damned familiar. His eyes, those golden orbs of yellow flame spoke to her in a soft song she could drown in. His long hair was like a blanket of snow she could wrap her fingers in. The strength he embodied was great, and yet she still felt this need to protect him. Why? Why? She continued to ask herself that.

"How did you know my name?" He called out to her in a whisper as he came forward. He watched as she stepped back, looking ready to fight if he chose to attack. She was dressed to be a fighter and appeared to have the skill of one. Her hair was a mess of ebony and her eyes a chocolate brown. She looked exactly like the greatest love… correction, former greatest love of his life. Yet, something about her told him she wasn't Kikyo. She felt like someone he knew long before he fell in love with the beautiful priestess. "Who are you?" He asked again.

She narrowed her eyes, "I told you. My name is Kagome. As for your name, I heard it from your mother." She gasped, stepping back again as her hand flew to her mouth. Where had that come from? She didn't even know his mother. Yet… she felt the truth in her own words. She…

He growled, "You lie!" Hurt washed over him. His mother was dead. The fact she was lying to his face hurt. She had to be lying, right…? "How could you possibly know my mother? She's been dead for a long time…"

She shook her head, "I don't… I don't know how." She searched her mind for an answer. "It was a long time ago… I think. I was…" She couldn't recall, but it was there in the back of her mind somewhere. This fuzzy event from her childhood. "I don't know how, I just do… I've been here before."

He arched a brow, "Whatever… feh. I'm out of here. I need to find that bitch Kikyo and get the Shikon jewel." He turned to walk away, but he felt her grab his hand to stop him.

"Wait!"

He turned, cocking his head to the side as he gazed at her. "What?"

"You have to help me get home…"

You have to help me get home… Where had he heard that silent plea before? A child's voice was the whisper in his mind. A small girl who helped him long ago.

"Don't move!"

Both demon and human girl alike turned to face several men with spears and swords. "Back away from the demon, girl!"

Kagome narrowed her eyes as she sensed their intention. Without thought she moved to stand in front of Inu Yasha. "No, I refuse."

Inu Yasha blinked. What was this? Did she think he couldn't protect himself? Well, that made no sense, if she didn't she wouldn't of let him help her earlier. But… why would she protect him? The girl didn't even know him. I've got your back… the words echoed in his mind as both a child and young woman's voice.

"Don't be a fool, girl. Let us have the demon!" One of the men shouted. He looked to be the head of the group.

"If you want him, you have to come and get him… Through me." Her words were a promise to the men.

"You think we're afraid of you, girl?" The men laughed. "We've dealt with others twice your size."

"You're a fool if you think size is a measure of strength!" Inu Yasha yelled. He crossed his arms over his chest. "And a bigger fool to take me on. Only your village's pitiful Kikyo could take me down. Why dontcha go get her and quit wasting my time!"

"Because," and elder woman's voice made the crowd go silent. She slowly pushed through the crowd and sighed as they parted for her. She stepped up to the front, "Kikyo is dead, Inu Yasha. She died fifty years ago." Indeed, the woman was old, her hair a white as it was tightly pulled back into a knot. She wore the outfit traditional to a priestess, the billowing white top and red pants. Her face was stern, but not with out care. The only curious thing would be the black eyes patch covering one eye.

"What…?" He gaped from behind Kagome, his face suddenly gone white. "Dead… how would you know, you old hag?" His voice was laced with venom as he spoke. Angered and tortured all at once. The love of his life was dead? Fifty years? It couldn't be…

"I am her sister, Kaede." Her eyes narrowed as she now noticed the girl who was so obviously protecting Inu Yasha. Her eye widened a bit as she saw her. But, this was impossible. Surely her vision was deceiving her. "Who are you?"

Kagome sighed, yet never waved from her protective stance. "My name is Kagome. Its not like I haven't repeated it a millions times today already." She muttered that last sentence more for Inu Yasha's benefit than anyone else's. "Why does everyone keep freaking out?"

"You resemble my sister, Kikyo…" The woman murmured. "Where do you hail from, child?" This was the curious part. Kaede could sense something powerful in this girl. Something very close to her sister, yet she couldn't place it.

Kagome sighed, "Do I really have to answer all these questions? I just want to go home. Back to my normal life. Back to TV and school and Souta. Even cleaning our the house looks good about now. All I want is out of here. Do you understand that?"

"Give me the Jewel!" A loud hiss echoed off the forest walls a giant centipede woman came at Kagome. "I need that power!"

"Oh my god…" Kagome said in a low voice that might make one think she was afraid… "This day just gets better." She growled as she stepped back, preparing for a fight.

Inu Yasha leapt in, picking her up just as the large insect came at her and leapt into another corner, placing her behind him.

"We have to fight," she said. She had to do something. If she didn't these people would get hurt because her. It was obvious to her now that the demons were coming after her. She pushed Inu Yasha aside, running and leaping, her intention to kick the demon squarely in the face.

However, this did action did not go completely as planned. The insect woman reached out, effectively cutting open Kagome's side. She barely opened her mouth to cry out as she felt something fall out of her body. She looked, seeing a glowing orb and grabbed it before falling to the ground and rolling away. She quickly stood.

"Give me the jewel, stupid girl!" She came at Kagome again, only to feel her body jerk back. She looked, seeing the half demon holding her lower body. She hissed.

"Hurry, Kagome! Get the bow and an arrow from Kaede! I don't know how long I can hold her off."

Kagome nodded, picking up her forgotten bow and ran towards the old woman. "Give me an arrow!" She practically shouted as she reached out.

The old woman nodded as she gave up an arrow, "May your aim be true, my child."

Kagome quickly placed the Jewel in her pouch around her waist and just nodded as she set the arrow and aimed. She said a small blessing as she fired. A roar of pain was heard as the arrow's aim was true, hitting the beast between the shoulder blades just as she was about to attack Inu Yasha.

He sighed, wiping his brow. "That was too close, wench. I could have died!" He frowned.

Kagome laughed at him as she lowered the bow.

He narrowed his eyes and frowned. "What are you laughing at?"

She smiled, "You're cute when you're mad."

He came over to her, crossing his arms over his chest. "I am not cute."

"Sure you are. Especially," she poked his nose, "when you're mad"

They were different words to the same tune. He'd done this before, hadn't he? But… was it with girl? He'd never met her, had he? The moment was in his mind. Everything felt familiar, but he didn't know how.

"What do we do now, Kaede?" One of the village men was speaking, interrupting his thoughts.

Kaede looked over at Kagome and glanced then at Inu Yasha. Her face seemed to depict the fact she was thinking.

Kagome looked over at all the villagers and the old woman called Kaede. "I'm not going to just let you kill him, you know." She didn't know why, but still she felt the need to protect Inu Yasha. Something in her gut told her to do it. Something reaching out from deep within.

Kaede shook her head, "Come with me. I can promise no harm will come to you or Inu Yasha. But, I need to speak with you about the jewel you have… as well as tend your wounds."

"My wh…" Kagome looked down at her side, realizing that the thrall of battle had made her forget about the open gash on her side caused by the demon woman. This wasn't the first time it had happened, but now that she realized it was there, the pain swept over her. Her hand went to it as she whispered a curse. She began to remove her shirt top of her costume. She noticed a few of the villagers turn their heads and rolled her eyes. Beneath it she wore a simple tank top. She wasn't surprised. Perhaps they thought she was just going to strip for them. Didn't they know tending wounds was more important than propriety?

She placed the costume top over her wound, hoping to alleviate the bleeding. "I wish you hadn't told me." She muttered as she felt strong arms lift her up. She jerked in those arms, surprised.

"Chill out, I'm only trying to help, wench." Inu Yasha muttered this, a smirk on his lips.

The old woman never answered her, but simply turned around and went back in the direction she and the other villagers came, the great mass following her.

Kagome sighed, not sure if she should allow herself to relax into his arms. "I'm not too heavy am I?" She frowned as he began to laugh at her. "What's so funny?"

"Of course you're not heavy. I'm half demon, remember?" He smiled a bit.

Or was it a smirk? She wasn't sure. However, in that statement he made, she once again felt as though she'd spoken those words before. But how… surely this was the first time she'd met him, wasn't it? This was the first time she'd been here before, wasn't it? Her eyes began to droop as she felt the pain wash over her. Damnit… the wounds were causing all her blood loss… she was going to pass out because of it and the battle.

"Inu Yasha…" she whispered. "Watch over me… I'm passing…"

He blinked, looking down at her, seeing her eyes slowly shut as her body began to go limp in his arms. He felt himself tense for a moment as she did this, thinking the girl was dieing on him. "You're not dieing on me, damnit, are you…" He whispered back to her, stopping.

She opened her eyes a bit, "Blood loss… I'm… I'm just passing… out…"

He thought her words over, ready to call the old woman for help. However, he found truth in her words as he leaned down to feel her soft breath on his face when she passed out. She was alive, for now. Her wound was not so bad. It was merely the battle that had caused her to loose so much so fast. He'd have to keep an eye on this girl. His heart was already tugging in response to her tender state. He sighed… I'm a fool…

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

She huffed, slowly crawling her small form out of the well and into the dark house that contained it. She blinked, hearing voices calling her name. Her grin went from ear to ear. She'd made it home! That little half wolf boy had helped her after all. She sat on the edge of the well for a moment, thinking to herself.

He was so pretty… maybe she could go see him again? She glanced down the dark hole. She'd have to. She didn't have many friends like that. And he was so nice! He didn't get mad at her for helping him like other boys. Well… maybe he did a little a first… But he was so nice later! He was grateful, even! She smiled. She'd have to see him again some day.

"Kagome! Where have you been?!"

Kagome looked from her perch on the well to see her mother at the top of the steps glaring down her.

"We've been worried sick about you, young lady! We looked all over for you." She kept speaking as she came down the stairs, "Souta said you had come in here, but we didn't see you. We called your name several times. Where did you go?" She asked again where she had been.

Kagome smiled as she leapt off the well and came into her mother's open arms. She leaned back, looking at her face. "Oh, momma! I went down in the well, and then I climbed out and found myself in another place!" Her eyes were wide as she told her the story. "There was this woman looking for her son and I went to go look for him myself and saved him from three demons. And he was half demon! They were making fun of him because he wasn't a full blood like them. But, I helped him. And he helped me get home! I want to go see him again. You don't mind, do you, mom?" Her eyes were lit up and her face full of a smiles.

Her mother was at a loss for words. Her daughter was telling stories now? Was it because of her father she was doing this? Granted, her father was a bit outrageous with his tales at times. But, this was no reason for Kagome to tell lies…She'd have to nip this in the bud. "Hunny, its not good to tell stories… Imagine if Souta heard you saying these things like this?" She shook her head as her daughter tried to protest. "No, I don't want to heard it. I don't want to heard you say another word to anyone about it." She stood up with her daughter in her arms. "You know your grandfather is joking when he says those old stories. You know they're not true. But, just in case… I don't want you coming back near this well. You or Souta."

"But, mom!" Kagome was about to protest again.

"No, Kagome! I won't have you telling stories! And if coming to this well is the cause of that… then you won't be allowed back here. Understand? You forget all about what you told me."

Kagome sighed… she'd never went out of her way to directly disobey her mother… But, it meant never seeing her friend again… Her mother just didn't know it was the truth. "Go down the well, mom! See for yourself. I'm not lying!"

She sighed as they stepped outside. "No, Kagome. Now, you're going inside to say goodnight and go to bed. And if I hear anything about this again… You're going to be grounded for a long time. Understood?"

Kagome felt tears coming as they went back to the house. She nodded, agreeing with her mother. She'd never see her friend again… But, what if her mother was right? Maybe she had bumped her head… Maybe it had been her imagination… or something. She felt a tear drop… She'd just have to put it from her mind. Demons didn't exist. The sooner she remembered that… the sooner it wouldn't hurt to not be with her friend again.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

"Is she going to be alright, you old hag?" Inu Yasha growled from his place next to her, watching the older woman tend her wounds on her side. She'd lost a lot of blood, but thankfully Kaede had the herbs Kagome needed. Still, it angered him that she'd gotten hurt. He still didn't know why he felt the need to help this girl. She was just a human girl. Just like the rest of them. But, he doubt those words. Truly, if she were like the rest, would she have faced danger so eagerly? Would she have helped him escape his place at the old tree? It had to be because she looked like Kikyo… what other reason would she bring out these protective feelings in him for?

Kaede wrapped the last bandage, tying it in place. She ignored his question as she spoke. "Do you know who this girl is?"

"Didn't you hear her earlier? Her name is Kagome. She's just another worthless human." He rolled his eyes. How stupid was the old hag, anyway?

"Wrong."

"Huh? What do you mean, wrong? Look at her. She bleeds like one, doesn't she, woman?" He motioned to her body.

Kaede sighed, "This girl is the reincarnate of my sister. The Jewel, which is now in her pouch at her side, is proof of that. It came from her body."

Inu Yasha was stunned silent. It couldn't be… "You have to be kidding me." His face was once again stern, revealing nothing about his feelings.

"I am not. When we burned my sister's body and buried it, we placed the Jewel in her grave, so no other demons would harm us in this world looking for it. She wanted to protect us…" She narrowed her eyes at him. Though she had taken the demon into her village, she had been loath to do it. It was him who had caused the death of her dear older sister. He had betrayed her and the village…

"Protect you? Just like a human. Care more about your own kind and yourself than anyone else. So much so, you have to lie to someone and then kick them to the curb. Pretending you love them. I don't have to take this, hag. Once Kagome wakes up, I'll take the jewel myself and leave. The only reason I haven't now is because of her."

Kaede shook her head, "You betrayed my sister, Inu Yasha. You attacked her and took the Jewel."

He gaped at her, and then growled at her stupidity. "I never attacked Kikyo! She attacked me and I took the Jewel because she broke my heart! I didn't care about anyone else once she did that! I wanted to become a full demon so I wouldn't have deal with you or your kind!" He was yelling now, not even thinking of the girl sleeping before him. The old woman had reopened wounds he never wanted to see again. All because of this girl…

"She told us you attacked her… I wonder…" Kaede looked to be thinking of something. Perhaps he was telling the truth. She sensed his emotions were worn on his sleeve. Her sister had trusted the half demon before that incident… So… perhaps he wasn't lying?

"What are you thinking about?" He arched a brow.

"I wonder is someone hadn't tricked you both in order to get the Jewel themselves. Once we burned it with her remains he… or she gave up. It means we have to get the Jewel away from here. To trick both you and my sister… they must be a great force to be dealt with."

Inu Yasha listened to her words… Was it possible she was correct? It meant… it meant someone had stolen something precious he could have had away from him. The woman he loved and life he wanted…
