Chapter 11 - Invitation

Shitenshi was sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the textbook perched in her lap. She had gotten into the habit of doing her homework on Saturday mornings, leaving the rest of her weekend free, but this morning she just couldn't concentrate. Math was meaningless compared to her date last night. Her daydreaming was broken by the shrill jangling of the phone.

“Would you please get that?” Her grandmother called down the hall.

“Sure!” Shitenshi hopped up and hurried to the kitchen, grabbing the phone off the hook on the third ring. “Hello?”

“Shitenshi?”

“Mujinku?”

“Yeah. How're you?”

“Just doing my homework. How about you, did you get into any trouble last night?”

“Nah, not much. But anyways, my folks wanna meet you and uh, re-meet I guess, Shiori. Mom wants to have lunch somewhere today, can you two make it?”

“Lemme check.” Shitenshi placed the phone on the counter and ran down the hall, ignoring the butterflies that had started whirling through her stomach at the sound of Mujinku's voice. “Ri!” Shitenshi found her grandmother in her office, looking at bills. “Mujinku's on the line. His folks wanna meet with us for lunch today. Can we go? Please?”

Shiori looked up with a sigh and chuckled at the blatant hope on her granddaughter's face. “Well, it would be a welcome break from dealing with bills. Of course we can go.” She smiled when Shitenshi whooped and raced back down the hall.

Shi took a deep, calming, breath and picked up the phone. “Hey, Ri said that sounds good. Where and when?”

“Um, hold on a sec.” Shi heard a door opening and then the sound of an argument.

“You will NOT do that again, Tai!” A male voice roared in the background.

“I didn't do anything, daddy!” protested a younger female.

“She didn't, but even if she had this wouldn't be fair.” The third voice sounded identical to the second, and for a moment Shitenshi wondered if there was really only one girl.

“Yeah, Mujinku got to go out on a date last night, but Kuro and I can't?” These must be Mujinku's twin sisters.

“He has nothing to do with this!!! This is about what you PROMISED me!!!” The male voice rang out. Mujinku chose that moment to interrupt.

“Hey pops, where's mom?”

“In the other room.”

“Thanks.” Shitenshi heard the boy walk away as the shouting match continued. “Hey mom!”

A smooth young female voice answered. “Yes?”

“It's Shitenshi. She can come but wants to know where and everything.” There was a rustling noise as the phone changed hands and then that caring voice was speaking over the line.

“Hello Shitenshi. I'm Kagome. Inuyasha and I are so glad that you can come today.”

“Hi.” Shitenshi felt shy and a little awkward.

“Do you know where The Garden Shop is? It's a rather nice little restaurant near the old Higurashi Shrine.”

“Yeah.” Shitenshi had often visited that shrine with her mother as a young child, fascinated by the stories told by the young monk who ran it.

“Shall we say noon, then?”

“Sure.”

“Great!” Shitenshi could almost hear the woman smiling. “We'll see you there then!”

“OK.”

There was a large crash in the background. “Uh-oh, I'd better go, before those three wreck the house.” With a click, the line went dead. Shitenshi hung up, yelling the information to her grandmother before curling up on the couch again, determined to finish her homework before noon.

And yes, the `young monk' is a grown up Souta. Not sure if he'll come back into the story later, but I just though it was interesting to include him here.

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha *pouts* or any of the other characters. I want to thank Rumiko Takahashi and company for creating such awesome characters for me to write about as I drool with envy at her skillz. ;)
