Chapter 20 - Insights

Mujinku crouched in a high tree branch, all senses fully alert. The building he was supposed to enter in an hour was deserted, as far as he could tell. He had been spying on it for two hours already but his actions had yet to be rewarded. Finally, three men approached the chosen house. A fourth and fifth walked up from the opposite direction. “Here.” The bigger newcomer shoved something at the shortest man. Mujinku recognized the jacket Shitenshi had worn on their first date and his pulse quickened in anger.

“What do I do with this?” The short man whined.

“You lay in the corner with a blanket over your head and pretend to be kidnapped until we can trap the boy.” The leader said. With that, the humans disappeared into the house. Mujinku rolled onto his back and began to revise his plans.

Even if I hadn't overheard them, they're all humans, no youkai. That idiot lizard actually thinks that five human men could bring down an inu-youkai? Even a hanyou one? He snorted and then sat up against the tree's thick trunk. “Hey Ship, take a message for me?” he called down softly.

The kitsune stepped out of the underbrush, not bothering to hide his surprise. “You knew?”

“Oh come on, like mom wouldn't have a fit when I disappeared this morning?” He rolled his eyes. “The twins are still grounded, so she sent you to get pops from Uncle Sesso's house, but you don't want him to stop me, do you?”

Shippo smiled sheepishly and tugged on his short ponytail. “I figure you know what you're doing by now.”

“Thanks. They're setting up a trap for me.” He jerked his head towards the shack.

“What?”

“Yeah, pathetic. So can you take a message for me?” The older boy nodded. “Tell pops, `it's easier to break free than to break in,' okay?” A gleam lit the fox's eyes and he nodded again. “Oh, and Koori? Please tell Uncle Sesso not to bother following.”

Shippo's eyes widened even further as the third boy leapt onto the branch Mujinku lay upon. “How'd you know?” The inu-youkai breathed in awe.

“I knew you'd come. You always follow Ship and I.” Mujinku looked at his watch. “Okay, beat it, both of you. I've got to go down there now.” He slipped down from the branch and checked his staff as the other two boys melted back into the forest.

OK, I'm ready for them. On second thought… He reached over his shoulder and popped the poison tipped cap off the end, slipping it into his pocket for safe keeping before approaching the meeting point.

“Mum's not gonna be happy with this.” Koori muttered under his breath.

“At least he's only her nephew. Do you know how mad mom and pops will be?” Shippo grimaced, “I purposely let Mujinku go into that situation alone, knowing it was a trap.”

“We could just not go home for awhile.”

“Nah. They'd find us in a heartbeat. `Sides, we have messages to deliver.”

“Oh yeah. Well, they're together, so maybe father and uncle Yasha will get mad at each other instead of us.”

“There is that.”

“And let's make them tell mum and aunt Kago.”

“Yeah, that's a given. We should probably go home to watch over the twins and send mom back to hear the news.”

“Conveniently getting us out of the epicenter zone.”

“Of course.”
