Chapter 22 - Back on the Ranch
“You two let him do WHAT?” Inuyasha stalked around Sesshoumaru's desk, barely restraining himself from lunging at the two boys.
Shippo raised his head defiantly, meeting his adopted father's eyes. “Mujinku knew what he was doing, pops; he wanted us to deliver messages to you and uncle Sesso and he told us to go home and not to follow him in.” He and Koori had raced home and cornered the two older men in the study, thankfully avoiding Kagura in the process.
“And what, pray tell, was this oh so important message that you abandoned Mujinku to be outnumbered and walking into a trap?” Sesshoumaru interjected, his voice icy with menace.
“He said to tell you not to follow him.” Koori never lifted his gaze from the floor. “And something about getting free?” He trailed off in confusion and glanced at Shippo, who corrected him.
“He said, `it's easier to break free than to break in,' and that he knew it was a trap and he'd be fine.” Inuyasha plopped onto the floor of Sesshoumaru's study, folding his arms over his chest.
“Inuyasha?”
The hanyou didn't bother to look up at his brother. “He's letting them take him in the trap so that they will bring him to Shitenshi. He thinks, and he's right about it, that it will be easier for him to break out of wherever they are holding the girl than to find their hiding place, fight his way in and then fight back out. As I recall, that was something you taught him while discussing fortifications and castles.”
Sesshoumaru shorted and stalked over to his desk, pouring himself a shot of brandy and downing it in one gulp. “So we let those humans capture him and then we rescue the boy before he gets into more trouble.”
“But father, Mujinku said not to follow him!” Koori protested, finally looking up into his father's face.
“THIS Sesshoumaru does not obey the commands of a teenager!” Koori jumped and scooted behind his taller cousin.
“Well, Koori and I will be going now. We need to tell mom what happened to Mujinku” Shippo began backing towards the door, dragging the smaller teen with him. “And we'll need to watch the twins when she comes after you two.” He muttered before leaping out of the study, closely followed by the younger boy.
Inuyasha's retort died on his lips and he felt his blood run cold at the thought of his mate's reaction. Not good. Very very not good in the worst possible sense of the word. Kagome is going to kill me when she hears what that fool boy did. “Um, Sesshoumaru?” He cleared his throat.
“Hmmm?”
“How about we don't tell Kagome and Kagura just yet? We could say we're, uh, going with Mujinku, so he doesn't get in trouble.” The hanyou licked his lips nervously. “We don't have to mention the part about him walking into a trap alone, at least not until they're both back home and safe.”
Sesshoumaru wanted to gloat over his brother's predicament, but his own wife's guaranteed reaction stopped him. “This Sesshoumaru does not fear his mate.” He declared loftily. “But we will do so to spare you from your mate's ire.”
Inuyasha chuckled, knowing the real sentiment behind his brother's words, and rose, readjusting Tessaiga in its sheath.

Heeheehee! I can't wait to see Kagome's reaction! Oh, wait, I'm writing it. Hmmm, poor Inuyasha. >:) Muahahahahahahahahaha!!!
Thanks for the review, Sar! I find it easier to write shorter chappies and post once a day than posting longer ones every few days.
Thanks to Zirra Nova on MMorg!

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha *pouts* or any of the other characters. I want to thank Rumiko Takahashi and company for creating such awesome characters for me to write about as I drool with envy at her skillz. ;)
