Chapter 33 - Mujinku's Fight

“Come on, is that the best you've got?” Mujinku taunted the five humans who were ranged in a loose semi-circle before him. The younger lizard had fled and Shitenshi was racing after the older one. One man charged at him, but the twirling staff sent him stumbling back, clutching his side. Mujinku hefted his staff to his shoulder and spoke seriously. “Now my mom raised me to be considerate, and since I know I can pound you into the pavement, I'll give ya all a chance to give up now.”

“Oh yeah? We took youse down pretty easy before!” one of the men who had been involved in the trap yelled. “We'll beat the stuffin outa youse again.”

“Let's just say that I was having a bad day that day. But this time I'm feeling much better.” In a flash he had the staff in both hands again, held level at shoulder height. Two men exchanged glances and then stepped forward, cracking their knuckles. The other three held back as the taller of the two rushed in, fist cocked to strike. Mujinku caught the fist on the staff handle and pushed the man backwards. His companion flew in from the right, aiming for the hanyou's ribs. Mujinku leapt out of the way and jabbed at the man with the end of the staff.

The first man drew a switchblade and charged again, slashing at the youngster. “You dead, kid.”

“Feh. Bring it on!” Mujinku's ear twitched and he pulled the staff to his side, ramming the end backwards and knocking the wind from the third man who had snuck up behind him. He pulled the weapon forward just in time to catch the knife and pushed, sending the man flying backwards. Mujinku leapt backwards as well, landing on a pile of crates.

“Awe, he runnin away!” catcalled one of the men.

“May'aps `e wants `is momma!” A second added.

He ignored the jeering men and awkwardly reached into the pack he had slung over his shoulder. “Come on, where is it… yes!” He pulled out the foot-long blade and reattached the cap to the end of the staff. He almost added the poison spike from his uncle but decided against it. After all, they're only humans. With that thought, the boy leapt down again, landing perfectly in the center of the human's rough circle. “OK, last chance to give up…”

His warning was cut off as two men rushed him on each side. The rest of the fight was a blur, as Mujinku eliminated the five men one by one. At last, only the leader, Mitch, was left. He had lost both of his knives, but had grabbed a metal pipe from somewhere. The two combatants circled, each looking for a weakness. Without warning the older man rushed in, swinging the pipe viciously. Mujinku ducked the first swing and spun away, hitting the man in the calf with his staff. The man stumbled, but regained his balance quicker that the hanyou expect.

Cold metal met his side in a punch that threw the boy back a foot. He rolled and came to his feet again, glaring at the human thug, who was polishing the brass knuckles on his shirt. “You're dead, little boy.” He boasted, rushing in again, fist cocked to strike.

“Feh! Like I didn't just take down your four mates?” Mujinku dodged and brought his staff around, hitting the man's shoulder. “You're pathetic. Really, even my sisters could beat you.” With an outraged cry the man attacked again. As Mujinku moved to counter, a blinding lavender light filled the room, accompanied by an explosion. Mujinku's head whipped around, but he couldn't spot either Shitenshi or the youkai. “Shi-” His query was cut off by a hand connecting with his gut.

An overwhelming sense of urgency and need swept over Mujinku and he turned back on the human man with a snarl, cracking his knuckles. “Back off. Now.” The man took one look at the fiery golden eyes and spread claws and lost his nerve. Dropping the metal pipe he backed away slowly until his back hit a pile of crates. With a gasp he glanced behind him, but a low growl from the hanyou decided him and he turned and ran. Mujinku ignored the fleeing man and raced over to the site of the explosion.

“Tenshi?” No one responded, but he followed his nose and found the girl kneeling over a charred figure. She was whispering something as the lizard's eyes rolled back in his head. Mujinku took a cautious step forward and caught the girl's final words.

“I waited 12 years to know the truth, and now I know. If it hadn't been the quarter moon, my mother wouldn't have died that night. I can't say the same for you.” Zard gasped and lay still, open eyes still trained on the girl. With a shudder, Shitenshi began to cry, sobs wracking her body. In a second, Mujinku was by her side, pulling the girl into his strong embrace.

“It's ok, Tenshi, it's over now.”
