CHAPTER TWO

The next morning came by far too early to Kagome; she had not really slept at all with the test on the
next day ahead of her. But it was her only chance and that was good enough to make her go there
and get over with it, perhaps she would have luck and get the insurance for her family; getting a job
and money was the most important thing in the moment and she would do anything.

It was cold and windy as she walked down the streets, hoping she did the right thing for her family.
Even her grandfather who usually did nothing but telling all this evil stories about demons and such
would see - once she returned with a positive test and a job- that it could not be that bad.

The words of her grandfather came back to her; Demons where the evil in person, unnatural and not
meant to exist especially not if this creatures where used as weapon. But this dislike perhaps came
from the fact that he had tried once to get into the forces too. He had lacked in ability and power and
not even managed to purify the easiest things or demons. He also ranted about rumours of demons
being used as brainless nourishment for the guns or experiments, whilst the gifted were merely used
to give power to the real weapons. Well, but that was all babble of a old man who had not much else
to do, and it certainly did not help her to find enough willpower to go down the street and into this
office.

The building was cold and high; glass and concrete as far as the eye could see only the big sign of the
red sun hanging down on several flags on the side. She swallowed and stepped in through the large
glass doors and the map in the hall behind them, she found her way and took the lift into the floor
where the unit's offices laid, walking up to a desk in the centre of the main hall, waiting till the lady
behind it finished her phone call. In her mind Kagome knew, that even this simple phone job would be
perfect for her, anything she needed, she almost missed out the woman calling for her.

"Can I help you?" The dark haired woman asked, clad in the black uniform like dress she wore. The
white half moon on her collar, showing that this woman herself was part of the special unit.

"Uhm yes... I am Higurashi Kagome… I would like to let myself get tested for the Special Forces…"
She explained, feeling somehow odd with the looks the woman gave her. She was at least as cold
and uncaring as the whole building itself, perhaps Kagome was not that fitting for this job.

"I see..." The woman snapped and picked out a clip board from the side of her desk. "Here… fill out
this forms and return them… you will be called if someone can take care of your case…" She handed
the clipboard over and pointed for a sitting corner at the side of the hall where several others sat
around. Kagome nodded shortly and moved over to the chairs that where lines up on the wall. It was
uncomfortable and in some way made it hard to write on her knees but she made the best of it and
started filling in all the stuff they wanted to know.

She barely had gotten herself to finish the first three sides as a loud slap, combined with a yelp and a
couple of courses made her jump. She looked up and found a young man standing there, holding his
cheek with an innocent look, whilst an angry woman stomped off to the elevator, cursing to herself.

"That's a no than…" He muttered and sighed, turning to Kagome. He took in her confused look and
grinned at her, whilst she quickly tried to return to her work. But it was in vain; the boy swaggered over
to her and flopped down in the plastic chair beside her, grinning all the time. The girl tried even harder
to concentrate on the test but he was watching her write and that was more than annoying; resulting
in her loosing patience.

"So you want to do the tests for the gifted huh?" He simply asked and she glared back at him for a
moment, brought out of her anger for a second.

"Yes…" She answered simply. "And I would like to finish this stuff quickly... so please…" She waved
for her papers and he nodded.

"I have time. You have to know I don't have to make the tests…I am just here to get my tickets and
papers…" he informed her after a couple more seconds. She sighed and tried to write on, ignoring
him, but he was not giving in. "You must know I have a curse… and that makes any test
unnecessary..."

She looked up and found him staring at his hand, the innocence switched with something like a heavy,
sad feeling that ebbed off him in waves. She followed his eyes and noticed a prayer pearls around his
hand, circled around a violet kind of cloth. Something in the back of her mind told her that this pearls
where hiding or better holding something behind them and it was nothing pretty that was sure. The
black haired young man looked up at her again and once more grinned at her interest.

"What kind of curse…" She asked before she could stop himself.

"A black hole, sucks in anything around if I open it up… inherited it from my father, he worked for those
guys here at least the guy that cared for me told me he had… someday it will cause my death like it
did his…" He shrugged to himself and looked at her.

She blinked and wanted to express how sorry she was for this, she could understand him so well.
Perhaps this guys here had a cure for him, like they had a possible solution for her problem, she even
wanted to say how impressed she was by the way he took all this facts as the feeling of his other hand
sneaking up her rear made her stop in the moment. She bounced up and brought the clipboard down
on his head with a loud smack.

"Hentai!!" she growled and stomped off to the desk giving the Clip board back. She hesitated for a
moment but there was not really another line of chairs to wait in till her call came, so she returned to
the hentai boy but took a seat one chair away from him. He had this innocent look again and rubbed
his aching cheek, seemingly happy with yet another smack in his face, she gave him a warning glare
before she looked away.

"Hey, I am sorry... let us start anew... I am Nagawa Miroku… and you?" He smiled again and she
sighed rolling her eyes at him.

"Higurashi Kagome…" She answered flatly.

"Nice to meet you Kagome…" He wanted to sit one chair closer again and fill the space that was free
between them, but his plans got ruined by the call of his name. He sighed and got up. "Well, that may
be for me…" He gave a slight bow and started to walk off. "Was really a pleasure to meet you
Kagome, hopefully we see us again…"

She watched him walking off and vanishing in one of the doors down the hall, shaking her head. That
had been a strange guy, a hentai but in some way nice, even charming; she felt sorry for him and his
curse all of sudden and sighed deeply. She had to prepare herself for such things if she wanted to be
in such a world, she had to be strong for this.

"Higurashi Kagome…" It called from the desk in the centre and she got up, walking over to the man
who had called her. He was clothed in a long white coat and looked a bit like a doctor as he lead her
down the next hall, for a moment she wondered what kind of tests there would be made at all but she
relaxed as he opened the door to a office room.

"Sit down please..." He ordered and she quickly followed taking place in the chair opposite to the desk,
the room was cold and looked in some way sterile if not uncomfortable. There was not even a plant on
the window or anything that could have showed that a human worked here. She looked at him and
waited whilst he spend the seemingly endless minutes with reading the papers she had filled out not
long ago.

He totally ignored her and she got even more nervous as she had been before; doubt sneaked up in
the back of her head and in some way she felt so unbelievable stupid to sit here now. She for sure
was not even worth the paper she had written on in their eyes let alone someone who would be skilled
enough to be called a gifted. It had been such a long time since her powers had showed the last time,
over 18 months and suddenly memories of old stories which her grandfather had told her in his old
fashioned choice of words came back to hunt her; a Priestess had to be pure and good of heart. Well,
that was something she had not thought on before, not to mention that she never considered the
possibility that the fact that she wasn't a virgin anymore could have mattered in all this, but now. Now
she really felt stupid and full of doubts. It did not help to worry about it now; she would not be a
traditional priestess it was a job like every other job to be in this special units, married people did this
kind of jobs too. And she hardly could believe a married couple would never… she was shaking her
head to herself, cursing the guy she had wasted herself on. This idiot Hojo, a boy from her class who
had pity on her and her family and wanted to even marry Kagome, but the guy was as dull as a piece
of bread - like one of her friends had stated once- and under no circumstance someone to spend a live
with. Sadly Kagome had already spent a night with him -a really uncomfortable night to say the truth-
as she understood how right her friends had been. (1)

"Miss Higurashi…" The man pulled her out of her thoughts after endless minutes and she quickly tried
to clear her head enough to fully listen to him. "I would like to ask you some questions before we start
this test…" He explained eyeing her at least as critical as the woman behind the counter had done.

"Of course… " She nodded, wondering if the endless forms she had filled out weren't enough yet.

"You wrote here that you was three as you had your first meeting with a demon… can you tell me as
accurate as possible how this demon looked like and what exactly you did with him…" He looked back
down on his files, ready to make notes.

"Uhm… yes.. I think it wasn't really a big demon… I mean I was just a little kid and can't remember
anything but it hunted me around on the play ground and it seemed to me that it wanted to eat me, I
was awfully afraid and did not look where I went and fell, landing face down in the dirt…" She tried to
recall all details of it as good as possible. "I don't really remember what exactly happened next, but as
it touched me, the demon exploded in pinkish dust…"

"Pinkish dust…?" He repeated sceptically and made some notes, she felt even more stupid than at
first. "You also have seen ghosts… is that right?"

"Sometimes… My friends and I always walked past an old graveyard on our way home from school
and there always where this dark and shadowy people walking around, I did not know it where spirits
till I asked a friend if she knew who they where that they never did something else than being on this
graveyard…" Kagome explained, remembering the stupid faces of her three friends as she had asked
them, they had stared at her as If she was mad.

"They could not see them?" He asked again in this sceptical voice.

"No... I think they didn't…" She explained, remembering once more that she had not seen them since
the night with Hojo. But that also could have been because she wasn't as often in this part of the city
as before since she had stopped going to school.

He again fell silent studying his writings. She hoped he would not ask more stuff she wanted really to
get over with it now, with this test and all. It had not been such a good Idea from the start, really not.

(1) A reviewer (Tom yet again) pointed out to me, that some Miko's get their power from sexual activity, what I will bring
into this at a later point, for now thanks for the tip.
