Chapter 6
In the Dark
Now is as good a time as any
Sango and Miroku had left a few hours ago and Kagome found herself in front of her grand-father. Under normal circumstances, she would have been excited to see him but his visit had left her with an odd sense of dread.
"A Miko?" Kagome was trying to gather her wits but what her grandfather was suggesting seemed a little way out there. Mikos were from myths and legends, right?
"Yes" her grand-father regarded her with a thoughtful glance. "You are the descendant of a long line of great mikos and priests my child and it is not surprising that you have this power." He nodded assured of his obvious conclusion. She gulped. She had nearly killed her brother with this power; this wasn't a good thing at all.
Inuyasha grabbed her hand while she sat there thinking. He could see her worried pout and he tried to soothe her with his aura through the touch of their hands. It seemed to work since she looked up at him and her body relaxed when she gave him a soft reassuring smile, encouraging him to continue his administrations. She was still trying to get used to his affectionate behavior considering a few days ago he would have rather eaten a skunk than openly touch her like this, in public. Never mind him initiating the contact. Her eyes lingered on him for a few more seconds, showing him with her eyes that she had to speak to him later, alone.
She turned her eyes towards her grandfather and asked, "Why wasn't I aware of this when I was younger? Why is it only showing up now?"
Her grandfather shook his head. "Who knows, there had to be something that set it off. I will have to do some research on this problem. But first things first," he gave her a serious gaze, "we need to get you into training to control the powerful surges of your soul. It could kill you and those around you if you do not learn how to use it." She heard him sigh and mirrored his frustration with her own. She let her cheeks puff out with her breath and her lips made a soft sputtering sound while she let out the air. She didn't know the answers and she glanced over to Inuyasha. He looked like he knew something.
Inuyasha swallowed hard. He could easily answer the questions for them and put an end to their wonder but the answers he had ran along the lines of ' Your power came alive because your past life, which had your soul partially mated to me, is angry about my murdering her by complete accident. Oh, and it might have something to do with how I'm in the process of making you mine forever without your complete knowledge so our partially mated souls from the past are rushing into things ' explanation would not go over well with the young miko. He groaned. How did he get so deep in this mess? He cast a quick glance her way and noticed her open her mouth to say something but her grand-father cut her off.
Kagome continued her conversation with her grandfather, avoiding the miko subject for now, this turned out to be more information she was willing to process in one night. She let Inuyasha rub his thumbs on the back of her hands and quietly relished the sensation it was giving her. The warmth of his hands seemed to seep deep inside her, giving her a small shiver. She couldn't figure out if it was from pleasure or from something else. She was finding it difficult to concentrate on her grandfather's words when Inuyasha moved his touch from her hands to her lower arms, his fingers drawing symbols on her skin, his nails were making her skin form goose bumps and she had to suppress a moan that wanted out of her throat. There were small jolts of energy coming from their touch that was making her mind turn to mush.
Her grandfather noticed the change in the air, it was suddenly think and electric, so he decided to take his leave of the young couple before they completely ignored him, Kagome hadn't answered his last two questions except for a nod or a blank stare. He had to stop the urge to laugh. This Inuyasha certainly had an effect on his grand-daughter.

Inuyasha continued his slow sensual assault on her senses, barely acknowledging the old man leaving the room, muttering a goodnight. His fingers were slowly massaging her tense muscles as his aura was wrapping itself around her. He was concentrating on only soothing her but the sharp scent of her arousal was making this hard to be only a soothing motion. It took every effort not to throw her back against the bed and properly claim her. His soul was screaming for her and he was finding it difficult to go against his natural youkai instincts. It didn't help either that her newly released miko energy recognized his soul and was resuming the soul-mating ritual, which was making his blood heat in preparation for the third stage of Inu-Youkai mating. Too bad in this life, he and Kagome were still at the first stage. He suppressed a frustrated growl. Things were getting confusing.
He needed a distraction from the energy building between them, he thought about the last few days while she was here, in the hospital. She had scared him deeply when he felt her aura try to separate itself from his four days ago and it had nearly killed him. The fact that Kikyo seemed to be more unforgiving than she had let on that dreadful night was not helping this problem. He wondered …
What would Kagome say when she found out about his past life with her previous reincarnation? Would she think he only pursuited her because of it? In a sense it was true, it was the same soul but the people were different, Kagome was an entire different person than Kikyo on various levels. The only thing they shared was this bond with him. He had to remind himself that he was also the reincarnation of another's soul and that this bond forming between them had happened over and over. He sighed. Then there was the whole question of his secrets. He didn't even know most of them himself since he spent all that time in his youkai form. And what about the fact that he was a hanyou?
He suddenly felt a spark in the air that brought him out of his thoughts. Kagome seemed to be in some sort of sleepy trance. Her eyes had glazed over, her skin was flushed and he could hear her heart beat quicken, he felt a rush of lust course through him in a thick wave. He noticed a few changes in himself also. He blinked, his nails had gotten longer and he could feel his canines growing, his blood was surging through his body and he could feel a low growl forming in his throat. He panicked. His mating instincts were kicking in by themselves.
He looked up to see above him their auras were mingled together, in the process of soul mating but they were not physically ready for that! He urgently retracted his aura from hers and he heard his youkai half protest, He growled at himself, his erection was pulsing, screaming to take his mate. ' Control yourself Inuyasha! You must complete the mating rituals! ' He thought of her reaction when he would finally reveal what was happening to them and the thought of Kagome angry, shooting purifying arrows at him was enough to kill the mood. He was relieved.
Kagome looked at him from the corner of her eye, she was starting to recover from his touch and put a coherent sentence together. ' How does he do that? I turn into a horny lump of mush when he touches me. ' She was getting a little sexually frustrated. She felt like he was teasing her with something and it always left her with wanting more. He never looked phased at what was happening between them, like he knew something and he wasn't telling her. She let out an angry puff of air and was planning to give him the eye narrowing of a lifetime but something caught her attention. She blinked. She thought she saw something on top of his head move. She shrugged it off. ' Probably the drugs making me see things. '
"Inuyasha?"
He looked up to Kagome and cocked his head sideways a little, showing her he was listening. She had to push down the sudden giggle that desperately wanted to come out; he looked like a dog when he did that. She could almost see two little dog-ears swivel in her direction, stiff with attention. ' Drugs, it's the drugs! ' she reminded herself.
"Yes?"
"What are we?" she asked seriously, pushing away her thoughts on his imaginary dog-ears.
He blinked at her. "What?"
She sighed. ' He can't be that daft. ' "I said 'what are we?' Are we a couple or just some friends with benefits?" ' Ok that was a little forward ' she thought, the blush was creeping up on her face.
He blinked at her again and looked a little stunned. He wanted to tell her that 'she was his intended and true soul mate' but that sounded a little too possessive and far-fetched and knowing Kagome, she'd probably just tell him off. He decided to choose the safer option.
"What do you want us to be?" he asked her quietly, his golden eyes trying to hide his uncertainty. She narrowed her eyes a little; a slight blush was conquering her cheeks. "You're confusing me." She shook her head slightly. "Do you want to be my boyfriend?"
He grinned sheepishly; his eyes twinkling and he cocked an eyebrow "You want to be my girlfriend?" She didn't know if she wanted to laugh or hide under the bed, they sounded like Jr. High students, so she just nodded instead of answering and then frowned. How did she end up agreeing to her own question? She was asking him out! Not the other way around! She looked up and asked him again. He smiled and nodded at her "I would love to be yours Kagome Higurashi." She nodded in return, pleased with his answer.
He leaned down and caught her lips in a sealing kiss. She had just unknowingly initiated step two in Inu-youkai mating by accepting his verbal claim and he still hadn't found the courage to tell her yet. He was about to break away when he felt her finger tangle themselves in his long tresses and her tongue forced its way into his mouth. She pulled him closer to her body, which made him lose his balance, and landed squarely on top of her, one hand conveniently landing on her right breast. She moaned at his touch and Inuyasha felt the dam of his restraint falter and crack. He squeezed her breast and deepened the kiss to her moaned request.

Souta had been released from the hospital and was making his way slowly to his sister's room. She was still being kept for observation for the night and he needed to see her. He had a lot of questions for her but he knew she couldn't answer all of them so he settled to just see her, make sure she was ok.
He reached her door and silently stepped in, he stopped in mid-step as a thick energy suddenly filled the room, it was almost hard to breathe. Her bed curtains were drawn around her bed and he couldn't see anyone else. He felt nervous. The last time he sensed energy like this he woke up in the hospital. He went to clear his throat when he heard a deep moan come from behind the curtains. He snickered. She sounds busy. He snuck up to her curtain expecting to find his sister in some precarious situation.
" What are you doing?! " he yelled as he threw the curtains aside, he did his best to sound scandalized but that proved difficult. They froze. He wanted to double over in pure laughter at what he was seeing. This was just too funny.
Inuyasha was half laying on top of his sister, his hand under her shirt, presumably fondling her, she had one hand tangled in his silver hair, the other had moved down to the belt of his pants, which she had been in the process of undoing, they were both in a deep kiss that would have made the goddess Venus blush. They're eyes were wide and shocked at being caught.
"Souta!" she screamed at him, Inuyasha suddenly pulled away from her but he forgot her hands were in his hair, which was a painful reminder when he tried to stand up, hoping to keep some modesty between his intended and himself. He yelped out in pain, the hair she was tugging was very close to his sensitive ears causing his body to shimmer for a moment, losing control over the concealing spell.
Souta blinked. ' Was that… ' before he could open his mouth to ask Inuyasha his question, he felt a fist hit him square in the ribs. He doubled over in pain and Kagome yelped. She had completely forgotten about his broken ribs.
"Oh My God Souta! I'm so sorry!"
He could only answer her with a groan as Inuyasha's deep laughter filled the room. Quite an amusing situation indeed.

"Hey Hentai Queen, you want some coffee?" her brother peeked around the door into the living room. He smirked when he heard his sister hiss at him.
"I told you to stop calling me that! And yes I want some coffee." Inuyasha grunted his response to Souta's question. ' At least he stopped calling me muscle head ' she thought, he brother had come up with these two names for her in reference to her super miko powers and her inability to remain a civilized person alone with Inuyasha. Souta had the worst timing ever.
She was sitting on the couch with Inuyasha, surrounded by books on their latest project; she rolled her eyes at the pile of work they had to do. It's been two months since they had returned from the hospital. Souta had recovered from his broken bones; except for her new nick names from her brother, things had returned to normal.
She sighed, and tried to sit comfortably. They had adopted this position where he sat like an Indian and she would sit between his crossed legs, it was comfortable and it kept them from being overly distracted. Hentai Queen indeed. They were working on the legend of the Shikon no Tama and the implications of the jewel in history. It seemed to have been the focus of many wars in the past. Inuyasha had snorted at their subject a month ago; he said the jewel wasn't what it was 'cracked up to be' and had laughed out loud, like it was an inside joke. She wasn't sure what that meant. Inuyasha had certainly acted weirder than usual.
That comment came to light a few minutes ago when she came across an important bit of information It seems that at some point, the jewel had been shattered and a miko and a hanyou had spent years searching for the individual pieces. She laughed.
"What's so funny?" Inuyasha looked at her with curiosity. He peered over her shoulder to see what she was reading and rolled his eyes. She was reading the part when the jewel broke apart. It wasn't that exciting or funny.
"I just got your comment from the other day." She smiled, reached up to give him a quick kiss. She giggled; he had a cute 'Oh' expression on his face. He winked at her when they broke apart. They had grown closer these last few weeks, spending more time together and getting more adventurous with their 'make out sessions' as Kagome puts it. The last time, they had shed some clothes in their frantic need and Inuyasha had to control his youkai's urge to mark her physically and take her.
She had been 'secretly' experimenting with her aura lately and discovered that she could make their 'sessions' more intense when she used it to express her sexual urges with it. It wasn't a big secret to him since he could sense it but he pretended to be completely ignorant. It made them want to lose control and her last 'experiment' nearly worked. His control was already thin and he wasn't sure he could stop the next time she tried it. He still hadn't told her of his true identity and he knew he had to do it soon before they moved up the mating ladder.
He was glad to be doing this project; it exposed her to the hanyou legend, which happened to be about him and his disastrous first relationship, nothing like making a mistake and have it written down in history books for billions of people to study through the years. That would boost anyone's confidence. He let out a snort. From what he remembers, things had ended badly for the hanyou and his mate-miko, there was nothing heroic about their sacrifice. The miko had died, the hanyou had disappeared and the jewel had never been recovered from the Lord Naraku at that time. That name still made him shudder. What had happened to him all those years?
Souta brought in the two promised cups of coffee and he gave Inuyasha a knowing gaze. He groaned mentally, that boy was going to be the death of him he just knew it. Her brother had been probing him with questions lately that made him nervous. It seemed like Souta was suspicious of something and he wished the boy would just come out with it already. All the tension and mystery was starting to make him want to break things.
"I wondered what the Hanyou looked like?" Kagome whispered suddenly, her eyes full of wonder. He blinked.
"Who?"
"The hanyou of this legend" she said, pointing at the book she was reading. "It says he was a dog-demon. I wonder what he looked like. They don't really describe him except for 'Silver hair and eyes of …'" She paused, looking at him and her small lips pouted in thought.
"Are you related to him?" He blinked again. "What?" she rolled her eyes, his sentences were getting shorter by the minute. "Your hair is silver and your eyes are gold, like the hanyou in this story. Maybe you are a descendant of the Miko and this hanyou." She stated, thinking it was obvious. Well, it seemed obvious to her.
He fidgeted and his heart was thumping loudly. She was getting close to the truth. He looked at her and was thinking about anything else than 'I am the hanyou in the story.' But it turns out he said it out loud. Hanyous could have their gold star moments too, and they were quite brilliant at picking their moments. Yup, this was definitely worth the shinny gold star of stupidity. She blinked at him. ' Well, that wasn't what I meant to say. ' He groaned mentally. ' Here it comes. '
"What?" it was her turn to resort to one-word sentences. Panic was rising in his chest. He faked-grinned at her and forced a light laugh "I'm just kidding." She blinked again, eyes narrowing at him. "I don't think you are."
His stomach dropped and his eyes widened a fraction, she wasn't going to buy the excuses this time. He mentally checked to see if the concealing spell was still working and it was. He frowned, what was she getting at?
"What do you mean?"
She paused before she let her mouth word the question; she needed to be clear on this. "I always see a shimmer around you, like a funny aura but I can never quite grasp it." He held his breath for a moment. "And there was that one time at the hospital I thought I saw something move on your head." She subconsciously reached to the spot she was talking about on her own head and he held a groan, she was pointing at the location of his ears. She was a stronger miko than he had anticipated and she was beginning to see through his concealing spell.
"And all that growling you do when we make out, you sound like a dog." She smiled. He growled at her in response, he was annoyed but it only made her giggle. "That's very cute you know." He blushed. She pulled on his hair, forcing his face to come down to her and when he was staring in her eyes, she grabbed the collar or his shirt, yanked him close enough so her lips were just brushing his and she let out her words, on a hot breath to wash over his lips "So tell me Inuyasha, who are you?"
She heard her boyfriend gulp and saw his shoulders slump in defeat as she pressed her lips against his in a chaste kiss. She knew she had won and broke away from the kiss. She gave him a tolerant look and patiently waited for this man to open himself. She had no idea her question was so loaded with possibilities.

Souta was determined to find out what Inuyasha was hiding. He was positive he had seen two dog-ears on top of the man's head and every single time he had tried to approach the subject with him the silver haired man had managed to avoid him. He was getting irritated. He reached Miroku's after a bit of a walk. His family were descendants of powerful Buddhist monks and if he was right, Inuyasha was using a concealing spell of some kind so he would need some spiritual advice.
He knocked on the heavy wooden door of the temple, careful to remove his shoes before the monk came to answer his call. He was let in and he paid his respects to the Buddha monument before asking for Miroku. He was told he could find him in the garden.
Souta entered the gardens and noticed Sango and Miroku in deep conversation. He cleared his throat loud enough for them to hear and Miroku locked his eyes on the young man.
"Hello Souta!" he greeted.
"Miroku. Sango" he nodded at the older couple. "I have a theory that I need to have confirmed."
"Oh?"
The young man proceeded to tell his thoughts on Inuyasha, pointing out some things he's noticed. He watched as Miroku's face became somber, his frown showed he was deep in thought. Sango only looked nervously around the garden, avoiding anyone's gaze. Souta frowned. She knew something.
* * *
Sango watched her little brother leave after he made his request of Miroku, she was nervous. Kagome had recently told her that she thought Inuyasha had been more than he seemed. With her new miko abilities she could see more than the usual person and she had been trying to crack this mystery. To bring Miroku into this could spell trouble. If Inuyasha was a demon or a half demon, it was tradition for a priest or miko to purify them and she was pretty positive Kagome wouldn't like Miroku killing her boyfriend.
"What are you thinking?" Sango was pulled out of her thoughts by his simple question. She couldn't look at him; she didn't want to confirm her suspicions.
"What are you going to do Miroku?" she asked softly, her eyes were shut tight and her hands were fisted on her lap. He didn't answer. He only looked at her, watching her reaction. ' Does she think … '
"I won't let you!" she burst out suddenly, forcing the ex-monk to pull back. "I won't let you kill him because of a dumb tradition! Kagome thinks she's in love with him and I won't let you take him away from her!" Miroku blinked again. His face was expressionless and that made her fidget more.
"I had my suspicions that he was more than the eye could see. We've been keeping an eye on him for years in this area. It was never my intention to harm him, never mind kill a friend and a loved one." He quietly stated. His girlfriend looked like she was about to fall apart. She let out a sigh of relief. "I … I thought …"
"I know what you thought and I'm sure Souta doesn't know that by revealing Inuyasha to me like this, had I not been his friend, would of signed his death warrant. We have to advise him to not tell anyone."
Sango nodded. If anyone were to even suspect he was a demon, all hell would break loose in the spiritual community. She bit her lip in concern. "Shouldn't we warn him?"
"Who?"
"Inuyasha."
He shook his head slowly. "He still doesn't trust us to reveal his true self, how do you think he will react if we go up to him and say 'by the way, we thought you should know it's pretty obvious you're a hanyou/demon and some people are asking about it.' I'm sure he would be ecstatic and very thankful." His voice dripping with sarcasm.
She rolled her eyes but still, she nodded. He was right. This was complicated.
"We will see what happens in due time." He grabbed her hand and pulled her close. They had only started dating a few days ago so she was still shy with him. He pulled her in for a kiss and felt her fingers pinch the top of his hand, which was resting on her backside. She twisted the skin painfully between her fingers, glaring at him. "Not in the Buddhist temple!" she hissed through clenched teeth.
He sighed, someday … maybe someday.
