Chapter 13
In The Dark
In your memories...
Drip. Drip. Drip...
Inuyasha's ear twiched at the soft echo in the distance, his eyes squinting at the assault of the sun. His back exposed to the cruelty of the heat felt like torture in the bright orange sun of the afternoon. A thin line of sweat had begun to trickle between his shoulder blades as he resisted the urge to stretch. The thick chain around his neck prevented him from reaching full height, always hunched over, his muscles screaming for release. His white hair laid flat on his body, dulled with the lack of clean water and a brush, giving him the air of a wild animal as his ears strained to hear any sign of life around him. It was warm for a fall day he thought, the air held no moisture and he licked his lips as the thought of a cool glass of water being brought to his lips by her made him thirst not only for the water but for the woman he was haunted by.
He brought one clawed hand to his neck and pulled lightly at the collar holding him close to the ground. Naraku had brought him out here for a reason and he had yet to determine for what. He had a funny feeling that it was not for shits and giggles. He had been trapped inside that damped and cold stone room for too long, he felt almost beastly when he was finally brought out to the yard.
"Chained like a dog..." he mumbled dejectedly. His eyebrows pulled down in a frown as he pictured himself barking at strangers, running towards them only to be yanked back by his leash. The thought would of amused most but it only made him growled with frustration as he kneeled. His eyes surveyed the distance a head of him, all he could see were trees and ... more trees. "Keh, this place reeks of Naraku." he punched the ground hard, cracking the stones beneath his knuckles. "If it were not because of this spell..." his eyes roamed over his body, his full demon form still there, the purple markings had begun to spread through his body, he noticed the stripes from his cheeks had leaked down his neck and had begun to spread over his chest. It made him oddly proud to see that, reminder that he was also part of his father's legacy as a demon. His tongue flicked lightly across his fangs in wonder, the length had felt foreign at first but now he had gotten used to it, thinking it made him look more like what he was meant to be but something inside him was rejecting these changes, fighting them day to day.
He found himself resisting the call of the Shikon because of that unknown urge to fight the changes. He could sense it close to him, but it was lacking something, he felt almost dirty when his aura touched it, wanting to grasp it. It's always that "wrong" feeling that's kept him at bay entirely but some of him had already accepted the Jewel's power; this is what caused him to struggle everyday to remember who he truly was. The beast within him wanted to taste that poser, drench himslef in it and obey it's sweet calling but something burried deep inside him, a voice, small and female kept him from it. He's resisted all this time because of it and he's still not sure why. He closed his eyes as he sensed a breeze flow over him, chills fromed on his skin as the sweat met with air and cooled him, thinking of that voice that haunts him, that voice that gives him hope at times when he feels like he loses himself to the beast within.
A change in the breeze brought a disapointed sigh from his lips as he slowly opened his eyes, his body no longer cooled, he shifted into a more comfortable position only to have his ears catch the sounds of footsteps not too far from him. His eyes focused on the figure walking towards him, his eyes narrowing in the bright light, focusing on his target. "Naraku..."
"Inuyasha." Black hair flickered in the breeze as he stood before Inuyasha, barely out of reach from the inuyoukai. A low growl emitted from Inuyasha's throat as Naraku smiled. He had a gift for the youkai that he wasn't going to be able to resist. Naraku suddenly grabbed the demon's chin, forcing Inuyasha to look at him in the eyes, Inuyasha winced at the force and his nostrils filled with the stench of darkness and death. His stomache churned as Naraku breathed deeply in the scent of the powerful demon before him.
"You have been resisting me Inuyasha, the darkness seeks your demons but you somehow refuse to be complete with it. What is it that keeps you from the sacred jewel's lure?" Inuyasha snorted hard, like the answer was obvious to a child. Naraku narrowed his eyes in annoyance as the demon defied him again, his fingers pressing painfully into the flesh of his face, bringing blood to the surface. Inuyasha winced slightly at the force, sensing something odd about it.
"You will not resist for long Inuyasha" Naraku whispered harshly into his ear. Inuyasha flattened it to his head in response and growled in warning to the man holding him too close for comfort. Naraku reached to his side and fumbled a small pouch opened only to reveal a small shard. Power emitted from it, pulling Inuyasha into a small panicked state of mind. His body remained calm but that shard screamed to him, to get away. Naraku slammed his fingers hard against his face, pain soared through him as he felt the sharp object enter his skin through the open cuts caused by Naraku's nails. Inuyasha felt a surge of power explode into him as something broke free inside him. 'This is... this is a fragment of the jewel!' He whimpered as he realized that no matter how much he had resisted before, direct contact with this could not save him. His mind felt on fire as the jewel shard grew bright, absorbing into him. He felt his mind slip from him as his eyes suddenly left its rich gold to a crimson red. A gargled snarl exploded from him as Naraku watched from a little distance, safe from the claws of Inuyasha.
Naraku watched as the inner beast was released. "Show me, Inuyasha, show me what your true nature is capable of."

Sesshomarou walked briskly to his study as his wife followed silently behind him, staring thoughtfully at his back. Her mind had made it's(its) way back to Inuyasha and what would become of him if they weren't able to track him soon. Kagome was changing slowly. It wasn't noticeable at first but something that was haunting her was slowly changing the spark known to all as Kagome. She didn't seem to be the carefree girl from a few months ago. Her features had become tired, her eyes always serious and her mind always seemed to be elsewhere, thinking of finding him.
" Miroku seems to have changed as well." Her husband cut through her thoughts and she blinked rapidly, like she had something in her eyes. It took her a moment to realize he was speaking to her.
"How so?" she answered softly. Sesshomarou paused briefly by the door of his study and gave his wife a brief look before carefully answering. "After his exposure to Inuyasha's memories, he's been struggling to keep his own personality. His body is fighting the unwanted memories and as we speak, he's forgetting some as his body tries to regain control." Rin raised her left eyebrow in surprise and concern. "He's not himself?" she asked.
"No. He's a mixture of memories and Mirokou if that makes sense. It's like a forced mating between Inuyasha's memories and that of Mirokou." Rin laughed, the thought of those two in a forced mating seemed rather silly to her but Sesshomarou only grunted. "It's not that amusing woman." Rin shrugged and rolled her eyes lightly at her husband's grumpiness. "So what does it mean then for Mirokou?"
Sesshomarou stood still for a moment before continuing on towards his work desk. "It means that Inuyasha will probably lose himself if the mating between his soul and Kagome isn't completed properly."
His voice struck her deep within, leaving a cold empty feeling in her belly. Her eyes stared hard at her husband. "Is that what is happening to Kagome?" She asked softly, her fingers intertwineed in each other, fidgeting with worry. Sesshomarou said nothing which worried her even more. He only stared at the pages laying scattered around his desk from when Kagome came to him last night. He had noted her changes and knew that they were running out of time.
"Help me find where Naraku is. No use worrying about things we have no control over Rin."
She nodded and brought herself to the desk, her shaking hands reaching for a paper but only met Sesshomarou's hand that had crossed her path. He grabbed it gently and pulled it close towards him, in a tender embrace, unusual for him but his wife looked like she was about to fall apart. "Rin, don't worry. Focus yourself on these memories of Miroku and Kagome, we need to see where he could be." Rin pulled her face into her mate's clothing as she stiffled a silent sob of hopelessness. She had to be strong for him, she had to be strong for Kagome. They need to hurry. She pulled away from her husband and picked up the first thing she saw. A note left by Kagome, explainning what she had seen in Inuyasha's mind.
"The trees, they were tall as the mountains, reaching for the clouds, the sun could barely enter the branches to warm my face. I could hear a village close by but not so close that the villagers could see you. I could feel cold stone under my hands, I felt closed in. When I looked outside of my barred windows, I could see a river outside, a bridge was gapped between the town and the building. Guards were around us, I felt safe and in danger." Rin looked to her husband and said "This sounds like he was held in a castle, or some kind of fortress. And it seems like it was inhabited by people or youkai, deep inside a forest." Sesshomarou nodded slowly as he was reading.
Rin sat pensively as she considered the words of Kagome, thinking back on her own recollection of the time. Her mind trickling recognition of the description but she was unable to place her finger on it.
"Hmmm... a town with a fortress.. or castle? Surrounded by water..." Rin tapped her chin pensively while her husband rummaged through the papers she had been looking at when suddenly it came to her, she could see it in her mind 450 years ago, a castle newly built by a conquering warlord at the time, a magnificient wonder. She looked to her husband and saw that he had also found the answer.
"Chiyoda-Jo!" they simulataniously answered together. Rin being more excited, shrilled out her answer while her husband winced at the sound and said his more calmly. He picked up the phone as Rin giggled excitedly and dialed Mirokou's number.
"We think we know where he is, monk. Chiyoda-ku of Tokyo City. He's in Chiyoda-Jo's dungeons.
Before Miroku could even come out of his shocked stupor at the news, the youkai had already hung up the phone and before he could register all sounds around him, he thanked the dial tone of his phone for a major break through.

Echoes of cracking stones split through the darkness of the night as pained grunts whimpered, red eyes shimmered in the darkness as a struggle insued. You could see only for a moment the bright red orb dim slowly as the struggle was won. A dark, starless sky peered over the edge of the barred windows as the lone figure, huddled in a corner of the room, pressed his forhead against the cold stone that created his world. He closed his violet eyes for a moment as the pain registered in his mind, insanity wavering at the edge of his thoughts. He opened his eyes slowly and stared at the mark before him, large tracks imprinted deep in the stone from his own hands, "When did I make these?" he whispered to himself. He looked down to find that the throbbing in his extremities were from the simple effort of bleeding. His thoughts were jumbled, felt as though a fog had been lifted from him. He couldn't remember what had happened to him, he recalled sounds surrounding him, pained screams and his lust for blood. He shivered in fear as his mind tried to sort out what was happening to him. He couldn't remember what he was doing here. He recalled a pink object forcing the surface of his innerself...
His eyes lifted to the window, bars blocked his way to the light but he knew there would be no moon, no light to lift the shadows surrounding him. His only clue to where he was was the sound of water, dripping slowly in this empty place. Loneliness griped his heart quickly and strongly, fears unknown to him settled deep within him as he felt the cold chill enter his soul, devouring him. He felt lost.
A shuffling in the dark brought him suddenly from his fear. He held his breath unknowingly and tilted his head towards the void that laid before him, coating everything in a layer of oppression. His body tensed as he listened, trying to see if he really heard it. One moment passed and nothing, he looked around aimlessly, trying to decipher a form but nothing. He took one step ahead quietly, chains dragging slowly behind him as his feet shuffled on the cold, damp stone. Two more minutes passed and still nothing, his body relaxed against his own will and he took a new breath as he stepped back towards his corner. A tickle against his neck he disregarded, thinking it was his long black hair but the brush against his arm alarmed him. He stopped in his track as he felt a breath against his skin, and a warm, wet touch against his cheek.
"Go back."
A voice, like his own growled each word to him, his own throat feeling the vibration, a sudden wave hit his mind like fire as he felt himslef being torn apart, his body shook with the pain as his blood changed. "No... NO!" he whimpered as he felt himself being pulled into the dark. He lost all thought as the bridge of his sanity broke and flooded his human mind with all the rage of his demons, swept away from his true self.
His violet eyes grew bright one moment, illuminating his cell in a deep purple only to have it glow red for an instant. the human had lost this night but his demon form smiled, he had found the flaw in Naraku's plan. It seemed that the Jewel may have brought his full demon from out but when it was drained of power, his blood went into complete change, bringing out his human form. Maybe there was a way out of this after all. His eyes wandered over to a shadow on his wall, his eyes glowing with triumph. The moon was still out and for once he felt gratitude towards his human side.

Naraku smiled briefly as he recalled his words to Inuyasha 7 days ago. "Show me what your true nature can do" and he had been shown. Inuyasha's rage had been felt and seen for 6 days. He had felt actual fear as he watched Inuyasha kill and destroy all that had been thrown in front of him, the jewel feeding his demon with blood lust. Uncontrolled, raw power waiting to be harvested into the perfect weapon in his revolution. Now he must learn how to control him... his blood lust is only useful to him contained and under his own devises.
He picked up a new shard from his desk and stared into it, it's likeness was impressive. These were not the real ones of course, the shikon would never allow itself to run dry as the shard inserted in the youkai did. The results though were promising Naraku thought to himself. He had been exposing Inuyasha to this jewel for the last few months in hopes his will would be broken by the mere temptation of his demon side but something remained in his way. His weaknesses were not entirely revealed to him yet thus keeping him from under his control. His frustration was beginning to grow and his fist hardened around the lone shard.
"Calm yourself" he spoke aloud to the empty room "You've come too far to lose your temper." He smiled again, confident once more in his plans to control this wonder called Inuyasha, his mind entirely focused on the shards he failed to notice the shadow approaching him.

Souta walked into the living room only to find his sister asleep again, spread across the floor in front of her were history books, myths and maps. His heart pinched in sadness as he approached her, lifting her gently in his arms. She had grown so thin over the last little while, it looked like something in her was giving up, or working too hard to stay alive. He sighed silently as he began his nightly ritual to place her in her bed, the house dark and silent as he stepped over her heart's work. The last seven days had been weird with her, her whole persona had changed, she had seemed panicked, out of control. quick to lose her temper and unforgiving. Souta was worried... what ever was happening to her was connected to him, her soul's chosen. Maybe something was happening to him that was making her act this way. He wasn't sure but he had made sure she would spend quiet nights, full of rest with his help, even if it was slipping sleep aids in her nightly coco.
He loved his sister fiercely and he would protect her, even if it was from herself. Reina had not agreed to his "methods" but she was killing herself. She wasn't sleeping, she wasn't eating... wasn't smiling. Where had Kagome gone? He shook his head in wonder to his question, placing her gently to her bed. He tucked her in like a helpless child and walked away from her.
"He needs me ..."
Souta stopped in his tracks. "What?" he turned to face Kagome, sitting up in her bed, her eyes vacant with sleep. She was sleep talking to him. "He needs me Souta. I can't allow you to do this anymore Souta, you're killing him." Souta blinked. Killing him? "How am I killing him?" he asked her carefully, he wasn't sure if she was actually dreaming or warning him. "My mind can't reach him at night when I'm like this... I'm losing him." Souta narrowed his eyes in the dark as his sister laid back down in her bed and a gentle snore came from her. He looked away from her thoughtfully, thinking on how she had changed and he realized that she had gotten worse when he had been forcing her to sleep. Shame filled him as he instantly knew that her connection to him was what was giving her hope, the will to fight and find him and he had been forcing them apart by fogging her thoughts, forcing her into sleep.
"I'm sorry Kagome" he whispered to the hallway as he stepped out of her room, closing the door behind him softly. He thought about Reina and what she had told him about slipping the sleep aids in her coco: "You could be doing something to them, she's calmer in the mornings, maybe she's able to reach him at night and keep him safe."
His eyes watered as he saw Kagome over the last few days, her eyes had changed, filled with dread, panic and loss. He had unknowingly kept them apart and endangered Inuyasha. What could he do now? He would apologize to Kagome in the morning and tell her what's brought him to do this to her. Sadness filled him again, he wanted Kagome back... Gods, where was Inuyasha?
