Chapter 2

Inuyasha silently cursed again.
How is it that once again the gods were being cruel? He felt as if some sick joke was being played. But maybe…maybe he had planned this. He stole a quick glance to Miroku's giddy face.
Yup. Definitely planned.
“Damnit Miroku…” he mumbled.
Lost. They were lost. Under Miroku's care they had managed to come to three different stops and he still had no idea how far they were from their real destination. But during every stop for “directions” Miroku managed to find and woo poor unsuspecting girls. Until he had to pummel and drag him away.
Lather.
Rinse.
Repeat.
Inuyasha looked toward the sky and saw it was getting dark. “Miroku if I don't make it there in time….”
“Do not worry Inuyasha, I've heard from a beautiful young lady that the Kingdom of Edor is just beyond those hills. We'll be there before nightfall.”
“You'd better pray to god we do.”

Kagome walked down the dusty road wondering exactly what she was doing here. Kikyo certainly didn't need her help…and she certainly had better things to do….
So why was she here again?
It was a long walk to the underground Den of Midoriko. They wouldn't reach until almost nightfall. The fields they were walking through smelled of lavender. They reminded her of mother.
Mother.
She looked down at the ring mother had given her. She hadn't visited her for a long time. Maybe after this was over and with Kikyo gone…
Kikyo would be gone?
Why hadn't she thought of that! While Kikyo would be gone off saving her hide and everyone else's, Kagome would be free…
Free. Huh.
Never thought she'd hear herself say that. The sun was starting to go down over the mountains as they approached the Den of Midoriko. The large stone pillars made Kagome cringe. Everything about this place seemed wrong. It was getting to dark for them to see the stairway down correctly. `Is this such a good idea to go so late…?'
`Huss…sssss…ssss…sss…'< /div>
Kagome turned around suddenly. What was making that sound? Maybe it's a bug? But as she walked closer near the Den…..
BOOM!
…..An explosion boomed in Edor behind her and Kikyo screamed to her front.
First response?
Find out what the boom was.
Second response?
See to Kikyo.
Edor was to far away for her to run and see what happened but she was willing to try…
Until a ball of fur flew into her back.
“Help meeee!” orange fur screamed at her. It climbed down the back of her dress and quivered.
“Kagome, what is that? What's going on?”
Ah.
It was hiding from Kikyo.
Wise decision.
Though she would rather figure out what this small mass of fur was, Kikyo needed her and it's best if she kept the thing hidden.
As she walked down the step of the Den she realized that she couldn't see her hands in front of her face and almost lost her balance due to the thing shaking at her back.
As she reached the bottom step, a flame twirled where Kikyo stood looking for whatever it was that was now in her dress.
“Kikyo, are you alright?”
“Are you daft? No I'm not alright. Where were you when I was being attacked? You can't do the simplest tasks you are asked to do, can you? Why-”
She knew she should have gone to Edor. It wouldn't have been this much trouble.
“I didn't attack you, you tried to attack me!”
Ah. So the fur has decided to show itself.
Interesting.
“What do you mean-”
A loud rumbling noise quieted everyone.
It seemed the floor had opened up.
Double interesting.
Kagome and Kikyo both looked toward the hole…then each other…then back towards the hole. Now she really was starting to think that this wasn't such a good idea.
“ Kagome I demand that you go ahead so I won't get attacked by any more creatures.”
She started to protest but thought better of it. Kikyo would get her way no matter what it was. She was the princess after all.
“For the last time, I didn't attack you! You-”
“Alright Kikyo, just…just stay close behind me alright?”
Kikyo nodded as Kagome went down the stairs. But all were to scared to notice that Kagome's ring had a slight tint to it. It was almost glowing.
They reached the bottom step of the second stairs to find a circular room with four pillars of light forming a square.
Etched into the wall near the stairs where they entered were words that were too faded for Kagome to read.
Until she touched it that is.
Suddenly the walls illuminated with brightly colored words. Kagome saw the words swirl and fly off the wall only to land on the floor around the pillars.
Now that was strange.
“Uh…Kikyo..?”
But when she turned towards Kikyo, she found that the princess was stuck. Almost as if she was glued to the walls…
`Hark, if thou is the purest of heart, the truest of word, the fairest of all, step out of thy body and repeat the incantation.'
“What?” Kagome said over Kikyo's interminable chant of `No'.
Instead of answering, Kagome felt strange.
Like something was tugging at her consciousness. It was starting to get all foggy….
……..and gray….
And then her world went black.

“Miroku….?” Inuyasha growled out as he turned to see a sheepish looking Miroku emerge from clouds of smoke that filled the Kingdom of Edor's skies.
“Heh…”
