Chapter 9

Kagome walked towards the river. She looked behind her and watched her friends disappear in the distance. She wasn't that cold, but for some reason she was shivering. A light breeze blew her raven hair over her right shoulder. She looked to the left. The forest seemed to have emotions…as if it were alive. It was almost as if it was keeping watch over her. She could sense it. She flipped her hair around and looked to her right. A beautiful meadow with tiny flowers scattered throughout blew gently in the breeze, and for the first time since that horrible event, Kagome smiled. She felt at peace. She loved her friends dearly, but she needed this time to herself. For the first time in Kagome's life, she really didn't want to be around anyone. She didn't want anyone comforting her and telling her everything was going to be okay. She just wanted to clear her head. She looked ahead of her and saw the river flowing at its usual rapid pace, lapping at the smooth rocks that just broke the surface of the water. Tiny white and yellow flowers were scattered along the bank of the river. The beautiful mountains added an artistic touch to the perfect scene that lay before her, and the morning sun seemed to give everything an illuminating glow. She began to feel warm inside. She walked towards the river until she reached its bank and sat down. She took off her shoes and allowed her feet to soak in the cool water. She closed her eyes and tilted her head towards the sun, allowing its rays to warm her face. She sighed and looked at the flowers beside her. She smiled, and picked a few of the flowers. She began making another flower crown alternating the white and yellow flowers. She smiled even brighter when she thought back to how Shippo ran into Inuyasha because the flower crown had covered his eyes, but then gasped when she remembered what had followed.

"I'll never hurt you," she remembered him saying. A tear rolled down her cheek. She looked at the nearly completed flower crown that lay in her lap. She watched as a few teardrops fell onto the flowers. She sniffed and wiped a few of her tears away.

"Inuyasha," she said aloud. "Why? You said you would never hurt me!" With that, she flung herself on the ground crying hysterically. Her tears seeped deep into the soft grass. She sniffled and whimpered for a few minutes. The ground seemed to comfort her and sooth her heart. The grass felt cool to her face, and before she knew it, she had fallen into a light sleep.

A few minutes later, she awoke to the sound of rustling grass. When she sat up and looked around, there was no one there. She looked beside her and found her flower crown completed. She picked it up and stared at it.

"How did I…but who?" she stuttered as she looked around once more. She stood up and brushed herself off, still holding the flower crown in her hand. She began to walk away when she sensed it. A jewel shard was speeding towards her.

"Miroku! Sango!" Kagome called. "A jewel shard!" She turned around just in time to see it. A huge snake demon leapt from the water. Its body was a dark gray and its eyes were blood red. It hissed at Kagome through its sharp teeth and two huge fangs. Miroku, Sango, and Kirara appeared over the hill. Kagome didn't seem to notice. Then she saw it. The jewel shard was embedded in its forehead. She turned around took off running towards Miroku and Sango. The snake demon wasted no time in trying to attack Kagome.

`It senses my shards,' she thought.

"Miroku! Sango!" Kagome screamed. Sango, Kirara, and Miroku ran as fast as they could towards Kagome, but watched in horror as the snake plunged towards her.

"KAGOME!!!" they all screamed. Kagome looked behind her only to cause herself to trip and fall.

"Aghhhh!" she screamed as the snake descended upon her leaving a huge cloud of dust where they once stood.

"Kagome, NOOOO!" Sango screamed. Her eyes began to quiver and fill with tears. Miroku just stared in disbelief. Shippo soon arrived beside them with Kagome's bow and arrows in his hand. He had seen the whole thing and had arrived too late.

"Kagomeeeeee!" he squealed as he dropped her bow and arrows. They all waited impatiently for the dust to clear. The dust traveled towards them causing them to shield their eyes and cough. When the dust had cleared, they opened their eyes to see a truly astonishing sight. The snake demon lay dead, in two equal halves, with none other than Inuyasha towering above the demon. Kagome lay behind Inuyasha propping herself up on her elbows and panting heavily. Inuyasha didn't turn to look at her. He just stared at the snake demon that had almost killed Kagome. Sango, Miroku, and Shippo ran down the hill and squatted next to Kagome.

"Are you alright?" they all asked at once.

"I'm…fine," Kagome said almost in a daze, almost as if she couldn't believe she was alive. She looked up at Inuyasha who still hadn't turned around to look at her. She looked away from him. It was just too painful.

"Kagome," Miroku said. "You said you sensed a jewel shard. Where is it?" Kagome looked up and saw it shining.

"There," she said pointing. "In the forehead of the left half." Inuyasha walked over to the left half of the snake demon and pulled out the jewel shard. He stared at it for a couple of seconds, then tossed it back to Kagome. She caught it with both of her hands and looked at it. It was actually a rather large shard. When she looked up, Inuyasha was gone. She looked all around her, but couldn't seem to find him. Her heart skipped a beat. She knew that Inuyasha hadn't done what he did on purpose. She knew he couldn't control his demon side, but the pain just wouldn't go away. Sango and Miroku help lift Kagome to her feet.

"Are you sure you are not hurt?" Sango asked. Kagome smiled weakly.

"I'm fine, Sango," she said. They nodded and began walking back towards camp. Kagome stood still and stared into the forest.

`Only time will tell if I can ever forgive you for this, Inuyasha,' she thought as she stared at the forest. `But the pain is too great for me to tell one way or the other right now.'

"Kagome, you coming?" Sango asked. Kagome turned around and nodded. She then scurried off to catch up with her friends.

Just at the edge of the forest, a tear fell down a hanyou's face. He took a deep breath and thanked God that Kagome was all right…that he had made it there in time. He had seen the whole thing. He had heard her cry out his name and ask why. But when she cried herself to sleep, he couldn't help, but to sneak up on her. She was asleep. He had to be next to her. It was his only chance. When he returned to the forest was when he heard her scream. He had made it just in time to place himself between Kagome and the snake demon. Luckily, the snake was an easy kill. He didn't even have to use tessaiga. He stared at the beautiful creature walk away with his friends.

`I won't ever leave your side, Kagome,' he thought. `You have no idea how sorry I am for what I did.' Tears formed in his eyes again, but he fought them back. He wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his haori, then began jumping from tree to tree to follow them.

Back at camp, a little flea demon awaited everyone's return. When he saw them coming, he bounded down and ran towards Kagome.

"Lady Kagome, are you all right?" he asked as he jumped on her shoulder. "I heard the whole thing going on!" Kagome raised an eyebrow at Myouga.

"How convenient," she said. "You heard everything that was going on? Hmm…seems like I am safe now since you are here. You always seem to run away when there's trouble." Myouga sweat dropped.

"Lady Kagome, I am only concerned for your safety," he said.

"Yeah, from a mile's distance," she said smugly as she walked over to a log and sat down. She sighed and thought back to how Inuyasha had saved her.

`Why did he do that?' she thought.

`Well, duh!' her mind argued. `He always protects you!'

`Yeah except he can't even protect me from himself!' she thought as she frowned.

Myouga stared at Kagome's countenance and realized that she was deep in thought. He jumped down from her shoulder and ran over to Miroku and Sango who had already started gathering things for the trip back to the village.

"Just what happened out there?" Myouga asked. Miroku and Sango looked at each other and then Myouga.

"Kagome had left earlier and we decided not to follow her. A little later we heard her screaming for Sango and I," Miroku said. Sango nodded.

"It was a snake demon," she said. "He had sensed the jewel shards Kagome possessed and came after her."

"When we arrived, we were too late," Miroku said. "Kagome had fallen prey to the snake demon and it would have been physically impossible to rescue her."

"When the dust cleared, we saw Inuyasha standing in between the snake and Kagome. He had killed the snake demon and saved Kagome," Sango said. "But he didn't even look at her, or us for that matter. Kagome told us where the shard was, and Inuyasha pulled it out and tossed it to her. When we looked up, he was gone. It was as simple as that."

"I see," Myouga said as he thought about what Sango and Miroku told him.

"Is there a particular reason that Inuyasha is acting this way?" Miroku asked. Myouga started sweating.

"Wh-What do you mean?" Myouga said as he started fidgeting. Miroku snatched Myouga off the ground and brought him to his face.

"What's going on, Myouga?" Miroku asked suspiciously. Myouga twisted a little in Miroku grip, but then relaxed and let out a deep breath.

"I guess you two should know. Inuyasha could use your help," Myouga said. "Inuyasha is trying to give Kagome her space. I'm sure we all could agree that that is probably the best thing for her right now. You see, Inuyasha will keep watch over Kagome from afar, and he will continue to protect her and look after her. When Kagome is ready, he will rejoin the group, but until that time he will remain invisible, only revealing himself when it is absolutely necessary. Inuyasha will be able to sense when Kagome is ready to speak to him and have his company. I actually feel really sorry for him. He is willing to do whatever it takes to get Kagome back. I don't want to reveal anything more than that until I am absolutely sure of his actions." Miroku and Sango exchanged glances. Miroku set Myouga on the ground and stood up to look at Sango.

"Interesting," Miroku said with a smile.

"Very interesting," Sango said with an even bigger smile. Miroku and Sango smiled at each other. They didn't know the hanyou quite as well as Kagome, but they knew him well enough to know what he was planning. There was no doubt about their duty either. They were going to help Inuyasha in every way they could. They knew Inuyasha would never intentionally hurt Kagome, and they wanted the group to be back together again. It was like their family…their home. Neither of them could stand to see their friends hurt any longer. It was time they started taking some action.
