Laughter ringing through the forest.

Children's games. Gone in an instant.

Screaming. The unmistakable smell of blood and fire.

Children! This way! Hurry! Her mother's voice, calling them to her. Coming into view and scooping them both under an arm and running into the deep forest. The smell of death clinging to her clothing and hair as she carried them. Higher and higher into the trees they climbed, to the caves in the cliffs. There they waited for what seemed like forever.

Both of their fathers coming to find them the next dawn. A hushed conversation among the adults. Trying to decide how to tell him what he already knew.

Her little arms wrapping around him and holding tight. Turning his face into her shoulder to keep himself from howling in misery. Her hands touching his hair, trying to soothe an empty ache that wouldn't stop. Then everything inside of him going numb and cold.

Sesshomaru.The child's voice blended with the adult one she now possessed. Where are you?

Golden eyes flew open.
