Independent Angel
Chapter 1- A New threat and Sparks
By: Josie 'n the p.cats

The office's normal morning rush was about when Kagome walked through the glass doors Monday morning. Papers were flying, coffee was being spilled by amateur assistants, criminals were yelling about their human and demon rights while officers lay about eating their normal morning meal - doughnuts.

Why am I not surprised, Kagome thought as she started walking towards her office.

Everyday was always the same for her. Wake up, grab coffee, rush to work, walk in to find the office in total chaos, and....

"MIROKU!!! YOU PERVERT!!!"

*SLAP*

Miroku getting the ritual slap after attempting to 'hit' on Sango.

Kagome entered her office ready to start the work stacked on her desk. Her office was a cozy little space that had eggshell white walls, decorated with some certificates from over the years. Her desk sat on a light blue carpet that had a occasional faded, coffee stain or lost paperclips. On top of her desk was pictures of herself with some friends and a clay can that held every color pen known to man. With a sigh she sat down in her "thinking" chair and picked up her pen, about to start the day, when her wooden office slammed open and an angry, red-faced Sango sat down in one of the guest chairs. Kagome knew she didn't need to look up to know who had came in.

"Lemme guess, Miroku touched you, you knock him unconscious (for a second or two), he gets up, declares his undying love for you, and then runs off after the blonde that walks by."

Sango grunted her response. Kagome just shook her head and continued writing something on a document. She was used to this behavior every morning. Sango and Miroku both have feelings for each other, that she knew, but she didn't understand why they were both so stubborn. The dark haired, fiery spirited woman before her is the type of person to use her fists before her mouth, which is why she gets in on the action when there are cases to solve. But when it comes to social skills, she like a freshman in high school : inexperienced. Of course, Miroku wasn't any better. Sure he was great with guns and computers when in a sticky situation, but on a level of 1-10 on relationship skills, he was a -100. Miroku's idea of flirting was corny pickup lines ("Hey Baby, you're hot..lemme cool ya off.") and taking up personal space. The day Miroku and Sango get together is the day the grass turns blue, the sky dyes green, and Michael Jackson admits he's gay. Those chances are seeming low at the moment...expect for Michael being gay.

And you would think that after all this time Miroku would have passed out from the constant beatings he suffers from Sango. (Un)Fortunately, his head is as hard as a rock and brain as small as a peanut.

Kagome's thoughts were cut off when Sango made a coughing noise to get her attention. You know, the kind of cough that is made to sound like a cold but at the same time used to either embarrass you in front of a crowd or prove that you were caught thinking about things at an inappropriate time. Don't you just hate that....

As a sign that Sango had caught her full attention, Kagome dropped her pen and gave a small nod of encouragement towards the woman.

"Kaede sent me to tell you that those documents with the victim's reports are due and she needs to talk to you today after the meeting."

"Did she say what about?"

"Nope, just that you are expected."

That's strange. Normally Kaede would have said what she needed me for, Kagome reflected as she got up and made her way towards the door. "Well, might as well go and get this over with." With that said, they left the office and headed towards the meeting room.

The meeting room was a large space towards the back of the building, on the third floor to be exact. It's walls were a creme color with a large window on the left side of the room, providing a view that over looked the city. A large, firmly polished table sat in the middle with black leather chairs surrounding it.
All around the room were bulletin boards with pictures of "Tokyo's Most Wanted" and filling cabinets overflowed with past and present cases. The two girls decided to take a seat on the right side of the table and chitchat 'til it was time for the meeting to start.

Not even five minutes into a conversation about how lazy city cops were, did Miroku decide it was time to shine. "Hello my beautiful ladies! How are you doing today?"

"Better until you showed up," Sango snarled while Kagome teased in a much more cheerful voice,

"You know you only say that Sango because you like him!"

"Like Heck I do!"

"Don't hate, Sango...appreciate!"

"Appreciate What?!"

"Kitties, I know I'm irresistible and all, but can we not have a fight of the cats today," Miroku suggested while backing away from Sango's dark glare. If there was one thing that he learned this whole time he's been hitting on women, never let them get into one of their moods...especially when it's that time of the month for them. Miroku suppressed a shiver.

"Something both of you should know, is that, Miroku, you are NOT irresistible nor do I like you in any way that both of your gutter-filled minds are thinking!," Sango exclaimed as Kaede was entering the room.

"Well, Sango, for as good as it is to see that your feelings towards Miroku are nothing but professional, I do wish that you try to not make it the office gossip of the week...Lord knows that's the last thing our cops need to discuss during one of their meetings of the 'Doughnut Club'."

Sango blushed realizing that not only has the room filled up more during the 'conversation' but also most of the room occupants were staring at her.

Kaede shook her head once while trying to hide a knowing smile and started the day's meeting. "Okay everyone, settle down. We have a lot to discuss today."

An overhead projector came down at the far left end of the table and the lights dimmed down. Everyone turned their attention to the screen when a photo of a man wrapped in a black trench coat standing a street corner appeared. From what Kagome could tell, the man was the tall, dark (literally) and creepy kind. He had black wavy curls and extremely pale skin. There was something in his black dilated eyes that sent shivers down everyone's spines.

"His name is Naraku. He is our prime suspect for the murders of 5 women." Kaede replaced Naraku's photo with pictures of the said women. The first picture of was a strawberry blonde with blue eyes wearing a black v-necked shirt and hip hugger jeans. She looked to be between 18 -25 years. The next four showed about the same info. The women's apperances were about the same except for the difference in hair and eye color. As far as Kagome could see, the only similarities between the women were their age.

"These women, as I'm sure all of you can tell by now, hardly have any physical similarities. From what we gathered from their broken bodies, they were raped and then poisoned. When the poison was tested, we could link the DNA back to some other samples taken from older bodies and connect it to Naraku. There's also another link." A picture of a spider scar from one of the battered bodies appeared on the screen. "This is a scar that has been sited on not only every body we've discovered that was killed by Naraku but also, a victim, that had sustained consciousness before their own death, had pointed out that Naraku carries the same scar on his back. It is shaped like spider, most likely a demon mark."

"So, then, Naraku is a demon?" asked a random officer.

"We aren't certain. From past reports, demon witnesses have told of him showing demon qualities but also having a human scent."

"Could the scar possibly be a burn instead?"

Kaede looked over to Kagome with mild surprise. For a while, she too, had been debating that possibility as well but could do nothing to experiment with the theory. But she just had to know her reasons for thinking so.

"Why is it that you say that, Kagome?"

All eyes in the room turned toward her as she nervously stood from her seat.

"I suggested the idea because, from what you have said and shown us all, Naraku can't be identified as a demon as of yet, even though, his strength might surpass that of one. Maybe, Naraku gained that scar and was not born with it and as a way of revenge, uses the scar to identify himself with his victims."

A series of mummers spread through the room as everyone began to consider the idea. But before Kaede could respond, her secretary stepped into the room.

"I'm sorry to disturbed all of you but Mrs. Kaede, your eleven o'clock appointment is here."

"Thank you Michelle, I will be there in a second."

Giving a brief nod of approval towards her superior, Michelle turned around and left the meeting.

"Unfortunately, I will have to cut this short. The reason I have brought up all of this is that, this case will be everyone's main focus. I want Naraku, dead or alive, off my streets. I won't stand by any longer and watch him continue to kill innocent people. At this moment, no doubt, he is growing stronger. Unless we stop before he reaches his goal, I fear all will perish. I want all agents on full alert and report back to me of any sightings. That is all for now, you are dismissed." With that everyone began packing and leaving while some began their own discussions.

"What do you think of this, Kagome," Sango asked as she headed towards the door.

"I donno what to think but I have a feeling it has something to do with what Kaede wants to talk about in her office." Sango hummed her agreement as they walked down the brightly lit hall towards Kaede's post. Kagome became lost in her thoughts as she entered the office and accidentally knocked into someone.

"Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was...," she drifted off of her line of speech as she looked up into the most beautiful shade of golden eyes. Kagome felt entranced by them and couldn't seem to turn away. Of course, that moment was ruined when the stranger opened his mouth.

"Watch where you're going next time wench!"

Great, just great. He's got beautiful eyes but an ugly mouth..at least, not physically, Kagome observed before she retorted.

"I said I was sorry, jerk, so back off," she yelled as she picked herself off the ground.

"Do I look like I care that you apologized?"

"Whether or not you care is not my problem. The fact that you're in my way is my problem."

Before the golden-eyed stranger had a chance to respond, Kaede butted in.

"Ah, Kagome, Inuyasha. I see that you two have finally met your new partner."

Okay..it's obvious I need to explain the reason for such a long absence...When I did the prologue, I was in one my moods...I had done the chapter using other characters names that I made up and never really thought of continuing it unless I got the inspiration, but the next thing I knew, it was posted on ff.net and I had an account...call it a "spur of the moment"...so, I'm sorry for the long wait, but please be patient with me..

In other news.....I FINALLY POSTED!! *does happy dance* Even though I don't quite like this chapter that much and will probably end up going back and fixing it, I'm happy to actually have it up.

My house, for those of you who read my a/n before, survived Hurricane Frances and Jeanne. But, thanks to certain things, I couldn't get on my computer for a month to continue writing. Thankfully, I only lost my power during Frances for only 2 days...2 long, horrible, hot days, in my opinion.
or those who suffered any damages, all of you are in my prayers and until next update (which, please God, won't be another year wait)...please r/r. I always want to hear your opinions on what was good, bad, or needs some fixing. Thank You! -Josie
