-Chapter Two-

It was no use. She just couldn't go back to sleep. The dream and every thought of it hung around her head, forcing its way back into her mind even when she so desperately wanted to forget about it. It made no sense, that dream. Dream? It was more of a nightmare than anything. Darkness...complete darkness. That's all she could see. And the pain that she felt during it was more than anything that she had ever felt before. She knew it was an illusion, but it all seemed so real. Even now, she can feel the slight twinge of ache in her head as an aftermath of the vision.

She turned her head to the side and saw InuYasha, leaning against a tree, with his Tetsusaiga tucked safely beneath his arm. The fire was burning vivaciously, and she got up to move closer to its warmth, hoping for it to drive her thoughts away. She looked up at the hanyou, admiring the look of peacefulness upon his face as he slept.

She could never forget the day that she first met him, and she really did have to thank that centipede demon for dragging her through the Bone-Eater's Well, or else she never would have saw InuYasha bound to the tree from the sacred arrow that the miko, Kikyou, Kagome's predecessor, had shot over 50 years ago. The look of calmness on his face as he was bound to the Sacred Tree...it was very similar to the expression that InuYasha wore currently on his face. It was funny how they spent so much time together, yet InuYasha didn't seem to grow up at all. He was still the same, arrogant jerk that he had always been... Kagome smiled as she thought of this. No matter what, she was always going to think of him as that same hanyou.

"What's the matter?" a voice suddenly called, and Kagome suddenly looked up, only to see InuYasha staring at her, his golden eyes flickering with worry.

"Hmm...nothing," she lied, bringing her knees up to her chest and holding them tightly to her body. "I...I just couldn't sleep, that's all," she was determined not to look into his eyes. Yet still, he could tell that she was not entirely telling him the truth.

"Stop lying, Kagome! I know something's wrong. You were crying out in your sleep. Were you having a nightmare?" he demanded, his voice both sounding persistent and caring at the same time. Kagome didn't answer. She just shook her head and placed her forehead on her knees. Please, she hoped. Let him drop it. I don't want to talk about that dream with him right now. He'll just worry. She must have been extremely deep in her thoughts because without realizing it, the next moment, InuYasha was already beside her, staring at her suspiciously.

"Eek! What are you doing?" she suddenly jumped back in surprise when she turned to see him so close to her face. "Don't scare me like that! Geez, would you just drop it already! Okay, okay, I was having a nightmare, so what? It's no big deal; I mean, everybody has them. Why are you so demanding all of the sudden?"

He ignored her. The harshness disappeared out of his eyes as he looked away from her straight into the fire. A moment of silence passed until he finally spoke up. "I was worried. I could tell it was no ordinary nightmare. You were crying out and screaming in pain. Did you think I would just go ahead and pretend I hadn't heard that?"

"It was nothing! Really! I just...there was something," she fell silent for a while, thinking about the dream in her head. "I was somewhere. All completely dark. I couldn't see anything. But then...then this girl appeared. She called out my name and told me to relax. Strangely, I felt myself doing just that. She made me feel as if nothing bad was going to happen, and I had nothing worry about... But then...then..." she tried to go on, but the words felt like they were tied at her throat, unwilling to come out.

"Then what? What happened?" InuYasha demanded, seizing Kagome by the shoulders and slightly shaking her.

"STOP IT!" she suddenly screamed out, clutching her head. "Stop...stop it..." she pleaded to InuYasha, tears building up in her eyes. How could she tell him? What the girl did to her...all the stuff that she was forced to see again... Why was it about InuYasha? Why was she forced to witness once again all the memories that she had with him? But even more, why all the memories that hurt the most? She turned to face InuYasha with tears and anger in her eyes. "Why must you always be like this? Can't you just let it go for once? It's nothing important! It doesn't matter! Just shut up and leave me alone!"

The moment those words escaped from her lips, she regretted it almost instantly. Ashamed of herself, she got up quietly and walked back to her sleeping bag, without another look at the hanyou, who, she was sure, was almost as surprised by this reaction as she was.

InuYasha, completely taken aback by how Kagome had acted, was wide-eyed. He remained in that same position, completely lost for words, as he watched the human girl crawl back into her sleeping bag and act as if absolutely nothing had happened. As shocked as he was, however, by this reaction that he received from Kagome, a girl who was always so peaceful and forgiving, really got him thinking. Was the dream - or nightmare - that she had really bothering her that much? And what exactly did the girl do to her? If she hurt Kagome in any way... He thought about this and clenched his hands into tight fists. If he found out that that that girl hurt Kagome, then she'd have a thousand year's worth of pain coming her way. He didn't care if she was female. If she laid one finger on his girl...

No, what was he thinking? 'If she laid one finger on his girl'? Did he just think that, or was he just imagining it? Kagome wasn't just some object; she couldn't just belong to him. She wasn't his girl as much as she wasn't anybody else's girl. Quit thinking like that or else you're start turning into Kouga, he warned himself. Frowning slightly, he decided to wait until morning to talk to Kagome again. She clearly was in a bad mood right now, and it best was not to disturb her.

Hoping for a good night's rest, he jumped onto a branch of a tree and sat down. That's right...he'll just have to wait until morning...

Kagome laid snuggled inside her sleeping bag as she played the moments back in her mind. She guiltily remembered yelling at InuYasha, accusing him of being so stupid and stubborn, never letting her rest in peace. No, she told herself. No, no, no! It's not your fault! It's that Goddamned InuYasha! If he had just forgotten about it and believed that it was only an ordinary nightmare, then they would even be in this situation right now! Why did he always have to be so obstinate? Stupid Inuyasha! Idiot, idiot, idiot!

No, you're only saying that because you know that you were being unreasonable, said a little voice strictly in the back of her mind. She was relieved to know that this was only her conscience. No, it wasn't the girl in a kimono, thank God; however, that did not stop the continous guilt consuming her. InuYasha was just trying to protect you. He was worried. And you just dismissed his caring without a reason at all.

But how could she have explained it? Here's what the girl did, InuYasha - she opened my mind and forced me to watch painfully intimate moments of you and Kikyou? No, that wasn't going to help anybody. It would only make her feel bad, and InuYasha guilty. Kikyou. Why must she always ruin the moments and feelings between herself and InuYasha? She and InuYasha always had to have these kinds of arguments all because of Kikyou... But she couldn't really blame her, for if InuYasha and the priestess had never been in love with each other before, InuYasha would surely never open up to anybody.

But who does he really love? This single question had toyed with her for so long. She was dying to know. InuYasha would always promise that he would protect her no matter what. But whenever Kikyou appeared, he would always run to the real miko and embrace her broken spirit instead. What was his motive? This strategy did not go well for both girls. After all, nobody wanted to feel like they're being two-timed or cheated on by the man that they loved so deeply loved.

She looked up at InuYasha in the tree, with that look of innocence on his face. "Moron," she whispered almost silently and fell right back to sleep again, but with a slight smile playing at her lips.

The night wore on, and unlike how it did for Kagome, sleep did not come so easily for InuYasha. Dammit, why couldn't he sleep? Was it because of Kagome? No...it wasn't that. Something else was up. And it just didn't feel right to him. He jumped down to the ground, and his nose immediately started sniffing around. It was there. A familiar scent. He could never forget that smell. Was it her?

He looked up at the sky for reassurance. Sure enough, a few Shini-dama-chuu flew past, carrying what looked like glowing orbs and confirming this thoughts. Those glowing orbs were surely dead souls, as InuYasha was completely aware. No, it couldn't be her. She couldn't be here.

"Ki...Kikyou."
