“Intended Mate” chapter twenty-one
A round belly and aches for my Sweet Sixteen

Inuyasha spooned Kagome closely one bright morning and helped her awake slowly. Today was very special to his mate. She told him it was her birthing day, and it would be a sweet one this year for some reason. He didn't understand until Mama Higurashi pulled him aside and expressed why a young woman would want their sixteenth birthday to be a special one.

“It is a year where a young woman is on her way to becoming an adult…although I think she's well on her way with that!” Mrs. Higurashi sighed.

“Good morning,” he whispered, sensing her slowly waking in his arms. Kagome sighed.

“Morning, Inuyasha,” she sighed as his warm hands pressed over her belly. She turned in his arms to kiss him. Things started to get interesting for the hanyou when Kagome yelped.

“What, what is it?” Inuyasha demanded, sitting straight up.
“I have to pee, is what!” Kagome insisted, pushing his arms off of her and climbing out of bed. She rubbed her back and groaned, making her way to the bathroom.

Inuyasha watched his mate walk out, holding her lower back. She was nearing her fifth month, and her belly swelled forward obviously indicating her condition.

The sight touched and heated him as it always did as male chauvinistic pride swept through his being at the sight of his life mate struggling to carry his pup. The weight was staring to hurt her back already, but he was there to support her. Like now.

Inuyasha swung his legs to the edge of the bed and stood up. “You okay, Kagome?” he hollered, scratching at his bare belly.

A loud indignant reply hissed at him from the other side of the bathroom door. “Just go away!”

Inuyasha winced, his ears twitching. He pulled on a plain white t-shirt and tucked it into the waistline of his hakama, waiting for her to return.

Kagome sidled back in, wincing. “What time is everyone showing up for my surprise birthday party?” she asked, tired eyes glowing. Inuyasha sighed, defeated.

“It was supposed to be a surprise!” he yelped, ears lowering. Kagome laughed despite herself.

“I know, but I think all of my friends ruined it for me at school,” she giggled. Inuyasha sighed then smiled.

“Okay, but you're not getting my present until your friends show up. Your mother said I should wait for them!” he insisted. Kagome nodded and conceded.

“All right, Inuyasha. Let's eat, I'm starving,” she said. Inuyasha watched her change, but was chased off for trying to help, then he walked her carefully downstairs. It amused yet touched Kagome that Inuyasha insisted on walking in front of her on the way down, and behind her on the way up.

“So you can flatten me if you fall,” he had joked, earning him a number of love swats.

The couple walked into the kitchen. Souta hailed his sister and gave Inuyasha a customary high-five. Mama Higurashi beamed and kissed her daughter on the cheek as Grandpa poured her several cups of herbal tea.

“Grandpa, I'll float!” Kagome laughed weakly as Inuyasha helped her into a chair.

“Nonsense!” Grandpa sputtered, and puffed his chest out. “Your mother had this special mix of herbal while she was pregnant and my grandchildren are the finest in Tokyo!”

“And it made me feel like I was going to float, too!” Mama winked. Grandpa sputtered as Souta laughed behind his hands.

“Now, now, daughter, I'll not have this from you! It's good for a mother!” Grandpa nudged the antique teacup towards Kagome. He called it antique, but for all she knew, it could have been bought at the corner store last week. Kagome regarded the sloshing scalding liquid without interest.

Inuyasha confirmed her theory at the cup's horrible contents, by leaning over her shoulder and sniffing deeply.

“Blah! Whatever you say, Jiichan,” he muttered darkly, scowling down at the cup's contents as if they could do physical harm to his family.

Kagome laughed weakly and sipped slowly at the tea obediently while Grandpa beamed happily and went on and on about the herbs he had pressed and used himself.

“Whatever, Jii-chan! You gave that to me last I had a cold, it's not just for mothers,” Souta commented, helping himself to his waffles. Western-style breakfast was a new thing for Inuyasha, but by and by he was loving it, especially the syrup he could slather all over his plate.

Inuyasha sat as patiently as he could while Mama cooked him a stack of waffles, only his ears flexing back and forth, foot under the table twitching. He was rewarded for his waiting with a motherly kiss on the cheek from Mama. Inuyasha reflected happily that their life here in his Kagome's time was going well as it could.

The impending birthday party of his beloved could only take the air out of his sails. He had to dress accordingly, and wear slippers in the house when he would prefer to be barefoot, and be soft-spoken and the ideal husband. Inuyasha was content to be the better man or hanyou, but damned, he was going to have to watch each thing that came out of his normally foul mouth and that was going to be hard as it was.

At least Kagome's girly school friends liked him already. He wasn't sure if Homo was showing up or not, but damned if he was going to let the boy slobber all over his pregnant mate. Inuyasha's lips peeled back in a primal smile as he contemplated throwing the guy down the shrine steps all the way to the street below, when Kagome nudged his elbow.

“Inuyasha! I said, could you go get changed?” she asked sweetly. Mama coughed and pretended not to know what about as Souta dashed off to fix up the family room for the party.

“What? Oh yeah! Course, Kagome,” Inuyasha promised, standing up, then handed Mama his syrup-drenched plate. He still wasn't used to forks, but could use the western dinnerware passingly enough.

“Thank you, Inuyasha,” Mama Higurashi murmured, eyes sparkling. Inuyasha leaned back over the top of Kagome's chair and kissed her cheek softly, and made his way upstairs.

He changed into another pair of Kagome's father's slacks, disliking the way they clung to his thighs and other specific areas he didn't want pinched. They were nothing like his baggy hakama he wore almost all of his long life, but he knew his mate would want him to make appearances for her today. So he gritted his teeth and slid on a belt, and tapped his feet into house slippers as he looked for a nice enough shirt to wear with it all. He finally decided on the absent father's long sleeved dress shirt. He tucked it in, and tied the buttons at his wrists, and went to Souta's room for help in tying his hair back.
Keeping it unbound always, he still wasn't sure how those small elastic bands worked and he always tore them with his claws if he tried it himself.

He had to admit, asking Kagome's kid brother for help in grooming was sort of irritating to his alpha pride. But the boy had gentle small hands easy for the task.

Inuyasha looked over his shoulder as Souta played with the ends of his flowing ponytail. “You done, yet?” he asked halfway gruffly.

“Oh yeah, all done. You look great, Nii-chan,” Souta commented, grinning. Inuyasha's ears twitched and he clapped a hand over them.

“Tell me I can wear your Angels hat instead of the Piyo Piyo one!” Inuyasha begged. Souta grinned.

“Only if you do the dishes tonight and tomorrow!”

Inuyasha groaned. “Your grandpa's teaching you to be a slave driver too huh?”

“Which will it be?” Souta crossed his arms.

“Deal,” Inuyasha groused, clapping his favorite ball cap over his ears.

The party went off well without a hitch. Kagome's girlfriends and several other friends from school came to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. Hojo, unfortunately, also came, but so far he didn't do much to irritate Inuyasha's already sensitive nature regarding his being anywhere near Kagome. Inuyasha was content to cross his arms and keep a stern look on his face as he surveyed Hojo's greeting.

Kagome laughed as he presented her with a pregnancy talisman from another local shrine. “I don't know what to say. Do I look like an incubator already?” she smiled.

Inuyasha glowered as Hojo enjoyed her pretty smile. “Forgive my intrusion, Higurashi-san! But everyone put their wishes into it for you. If there's anything you need to talk about, anything at all…”

Kagome sweat-dropped mentally, imagining telling Hojo the woes of trying to keep Inuyasha from licking his plate, or scratching himself in front of her mother, or licking her shoulder when he wanted sex. Her mate was a sweet halfling, but sometimes he was just so undeniably male.
It made Souta happy in any way to vent as a boy should.

“Thank you, Hojo-kun! But Inuyasha's helping me just fine,” she insisted. Yuka giggled and grabbed Kagome's arm, filling her eyes with shrill gossip.

“Inuyasha, come here,” Kagome begged, reaching for him. Inuyasha plastered a smile on his face and took her hands in his.

“Did you need anything, my love?” he asked. The trio of girlfriends squealed and jabbered at him excitedly. Inuyasha gave a customary `keh' and laughed, enjoying the attention involuntarily. He and Kagome made quite the image, arms around each other, complete opposites yet obviously in love.

A couple of weeks passed blissfully. Inuyasha and Kagome carefully made their way through the well to visit their friends. The exterminator village was doing much better this visit, the walls all repaired, the houses reconstructed and the gardens tended to with great attention.

Kagome was especially excited about the weapons rack and supplies Sango had established. Sango was more than ready to carry on her family's traditions apparently. She had an arsenal meant for a legion of children!

Inuyasha only sighed and tapped his trusty fang silently.

“I guess you're taking it to heart that Miroku-san wants a large family,” Kagome giggled, rubbing her rounder belly tenderly. Inuyasha's eyes glued to the sight, heart pounding.

Shippou laughed at their feet. “If Sango and Miroku had a child for each time he wished one on a woman, they'll be rich in babies!”

Sango blushed and laughed as Miroku scratched his neck. “Well Miroku does want a few,” she added. “And he is faithful only to me. RIGHT, anata?”

Miroku graciously assured her she was the only one for him. Not that he would be inclined to ever cheat on his huntress. He had the dread prophecy that if he were fool enough to forsake his wife, he would run breathless through the woods followed by an enraged exterminator. And she would coldly hunt him until he was brought down to her satisfaction.

“I wouldn't ever forsake my family,” Miroku demurred, sliding an arm around Sango's lithe waist. Shippou and Inuyasha laughed while Kagome went to sit down in the house.

Inuyasha followed her and sprawled insolently on his back, kicking an ankle over his knee as Kagome sat seiza, fanning herself. “Did you need anything, mate?” he asked.

Kagome shook her head, smiling slowly. She giggled.

“You're not having thoughts about eating pizza with anchovies off my chest again are you?” Inuyasha pouted, his ears laying flat. The smell of the strange fishes always knocked him out.

“No, Inuyasha,” Kagome smiled. She rubbed her belly. “I was just wondering when Sango is going to tell Miroku.”

“Huh??” Inuyasha sat up and wondered at Kagome's cryptic remark. “Feh! Women….”

“Inuyasha! Osuwari!” the room shook with his surprised thud to the tatami mats.

“KAGOME! How could you??” he howled, hurt. Kagome giggled and touched his arm.

“I'm sorry, but you shouldn't have said that!”

“Oi, I'll decide if…” he began when Kagome stroked his thigh.

“I wouldn't get snarky when you won't get sex once I get heavier,” Kagome smiled sweetly. Inuyasha sighed, face bright red.

“Yes, Kagome…” She'll be begging for me!

Sango stood at the river's edge in the pale moonlight, flesh bare to the elements. Her calloused hands ran up and down her torso, beneath her breasts down to the apex between her thighs. Her father always said you should know your own body for you could save yourself from illness if you paid attention to tell-tale signs. But an idiot could figure out why her breasts ached, and her mooning had stopped and she had thrown up the past few mornings.

Sango's warrior hands rested over her flat tummy and she smiled widely, teeth showing as she contemplated what was happening. She would feel ill for the next several mornings she couldn't count, if what Kagome said was true, but she was an exterminator. She was used to more than a little pain in the field.

“Sango,” Miroku called softly. His dark robes painted him as a black blot in the night and Sango waited for him to come closer. Her hands went to her breasts as she walked closer.

Miroku chuckled, taking in her lack of clothing and enfolded her in his arms. His wide sleeves swept over her and he kissed her simply.

Sango sighed and rubbed against him languidly as the top of her head brushed just beneath his chin. Her hands clutched the back of his robes as she enjoyed the moment.

“Did you want to tell me why you desired a moonlight swim alone?” Miroku asked in a teasing tone. Sango pressed closer and Miroku's breath came sharply.

“I just wanted some room to think,” she whispered. Miroku rubbed her back in slow circles.

“What about, dear wife?” he asked innocently.

“Remember what we were all talking about earlier?” Sango asked, looking up into her priest's eyes. Miroku nodded, his eyes alight.

“Of course. It's been what I've talked about since I hit puberty,” he laughed. Sango kissed his neck softly, quieting him.

“How do you feel about the first coming this year?”

Miroku froze, his eyes wide. His mouth went dry as he stared down at his huntress. Sango beamed, waiting for a reaction.

“B-baby?” he stammered. At her nod, he sank to his knees, hugging her to him.

“You're bearing my child!” he crowed. A nest of birds in a nearby tree chirped angrily at his outburst and Sango laughed.

Sesshomaru flew through the air in ease as Ahn and Uhn followed closely. Rin held onto Jaken's waist as the dragon followed their lord. They landed near dusk and set up camp in the easy routine they had since the days of Naraku.
Jaken and Rin made the camp fire, picked the vegetables and cooked them, Sesshomaru just sat and watched them prepare all for his sake. Vegetables were only prepared as they knew their lord would take care of his own meat when he went hunting.

And hunt he did, leaving his wards well guarded with their dragon steed. He killed with a savagery that fulfilled some of his more carnal desires and he ate with greedy relish, the bloody flesh and bone of his kill.

A short bath in a nearby stream later, the Lord of the Western Lands strode back to his campsite, hailed by his most loyal and mismatched followers.

Rin shivered as the night wound down. Jaken was already snoring near the fire but his young human was playing with one of his obis, twining it lovingly between her fingers.

“Rin, are you cold?” he asked simply. Rin beamed, her eyes alight as she looked up into her lord's scrutinizing face.

“Only a little, Sesshomaru-sama! It will pass…” she sneezed and rubbed her hands. Jaken mumbled something incomprehensible and rolled over dangerously close to the fire. His skin only absorbed the heat willingly.

Sesshomaru regarded the petite human girl seriously for a long moment. Why did she look at him with such trust and emotion? Was she in love with him as the human term went? Did she wish to fulfill him all of her days? His wanderings these days could only loll around the thoughts of Rin's feelings for him and her place at his side. Her ninth year stretched her thin legs out a little, giving her a few inches. Soon she would grow more and more, he was sure.

“Rin,” he commanded, holding his arm out, sleeve draping. His pelt draped over him, inviting and his ward took the invitation, making her way to him with a large blush across her cheeks. Sesshomaru-sama was just so…wonderful…

“Thank you, Sesshomaru-sama,” she whispered politely, curling by his leg, his pelt blanketing and warming her. Sesshomaru watched her drift to sleep, feeling the vibration of her tiny heart against his side.

As she slept, content at his side, the Inu Lord's claws settled over her hair and stroked softly. Rin had wonderful dreams that night.

Shippou walked with Kagome around the forest surrounding Miroku and Sango's village. He walked quickly as he could to keep pace with Kagome's pace, slower as it was. He looked up curiously as his surrogate mother sighed, rubbing her belly.

“Do you ache, Kagome?” he asked in concern. Kagome laughed and smiled warmly down at him,

“No, I was just thinking, Shippou-chan,” she said. Shippou sighed manfully and crossed his small arms as he strolled along.

“About your pup, Kagome? I'm sure it'll have all of it's fingers and toes,” Shippou said helpfully, wiggling his paws. Kagome laughed.

“Shippou, I wanted to tell you how proud I am of you,” Kagome said seriously. Shippou looked up at her, blinking.

“You are?” he asked. Kagome nodded, kneeling down. She had gotten a larger school uniform as her pregnancy became more and more obvious and the skirt reached past her knees modestly. Her arms reached for the kitsune and he settled in for a hug.

Kagome's fingers wound through his red hair affectionately. “You've grown so much in our travels, and are becoming quite the young man, if you're not too embarrassed for me saying so.”

Shippou chuckled lightly, pressing close against her breast. “Well I will be over 55 years old this winter….” Kagome sweat-dropped, not counting the way kitsune aged.

“You will be alright with Sango and Miroku, won't you?” she asked softly. Shippou wagged his fluffy tail and smiled bravely.

“They've given me a home here. I know you want to live with your mother for awhile, but come back once in awhile!” Shippou said. Kagome laughed and nodded.

“I couldn't stay away from you all if I was forced to,” she vowed.

Inuyasha carried his rounder mate in his arms to the well later that night. He grunted softly, feeling his way through the leaves and twigs, his keener eyesight finding the way home.

Kagome shifted in his arms, her own wound around his neck. She half dozed as she rested easily. Inuyasha panted and shifted her backpack around on his back, and placed one foot on the edge of the Bone-Eater's Well.

“Kagome….” He whispered. She nuzzled his neck and Inuyasha laughed, planting a sweet kiss atop her head.

“Inuyasha?” she asked sleepily. Kagome yawned.

“Are we there yet?” she asked softly. The cicadas chirped merrily in the forest around them and she burrowed against his warm fire-rat's robe. Inuyasha pressed her close.

“Close. We're almost home, Kagome.” And with those words he jumped into the well and five hundred years into the future.

End for now
These chapters are having some slow scenes. I say it's a long awaited peace after the bastard retardness of the Naraku Saga. I swear that guy just will not die! At least until Rumiko finishes her manga. This is my venting after his demise in my head.
I realize as the story winds down also, it will end very very shortly. I intend to do something of a sequel to this but I have a few Fushigi Yuugi inclined ideas in my head. Thanks for the support this far. I will carry you through to the end of this fic.

Very sincerely, penpaninu 10/13/05
