Lay down
your sweet and weary head
Night is falling,
you have come to journey's end.
“It’s over. No more shall he ever hurt us again.” Kikyou spoke lowly, as she turned to Inuyasha, her eyes, brimming with the lifelessness that filled her entire body, as she clutched her right shoulder. Blood oozed from the wound that was once again, cut and formed by Naraku. As she began walking towards Inuyasha, sudden pain shot through her entire body, weakening her, and making her drop to the ground.
In an instant, Inuyasha was at her side, leaning over her body, as his own blood flowed free. He too was in pain, his body having been torn, and cut by Naraku, as well.
“Kikyou, are…are you okay?” he asked, uncertainty and fear creeping into his voice.
“Shhh…”, she said looking into his face, her left hand began a slow rise up to cup his cheek into her hand. “You are tired. Lay your head down in my lap.”
Abiding her request, Inuyasha, fell to his knees, and brought his palms down onto the ground. Turning sideways, as Kikyou sat back on the ground with her legs crossed, he rested his head onto her red-clad thigh.
“Kikyou….” ?
“Shhh…rest Inuyasha.”
Dirt, blood, and grime, marred both their clothes as the dust and debris finally began to settle down and clear away. Sitting in the clearing, with Inuyasha resting on her lap, Kikyou noticed that the sun was slowly setting into the west.
Sleep now,
and dream of the ones who came before.
They are calling
from across the distant shore.
She didn’t know how long they had been in that position. Early evening hours had come, as the darkness began to take over the land. Softly she began to rub the dirt and grim off of Inuyasha’s face, noticing the calm and peaceful look that had overtaken his face. Coldness began to seep into her fragile and broken body, as blood still poured from the wound upon her shoulder. Lifting her hand to the wound once more, Inuyasha began stirring, turning onto his back, his head laying in the gap created by her thighs and calves. Slowly his eyes fluttered open.
“How long did I sleep for”? he asked as he yawned, his fangs showing fully, as he reached his arms back, stretching.
“ I do not know, perhaps an hour or two.” she said, wincing as his arm bumped into her shoulder. He noticed this, and sat up, turning to look her in her face.
“Are you okay….I mean I didn’t mean to hurt you…did I?” He spoke, as his clawed hand reached for her shoulder, remembering the battle that had occurred only hours before.
“Let me take a look at it…please?” he spoke in a hushed tone, his hand still reaching forward. Seeing the uneasiness in his eyes, she pulled her hand away from the wound.
His hand gently parted the ripped cloth away, and to the side. The cut was deep, and long. It hadn’t stopped bleeding, and he could smell the blood, the old, and the fresh that was still running out of the cut. Her flesh was torn, and mangled, with no sign of stopping and healing. He brought his head up, looking into her eyes. She could see in his eyes, that he knew what she had realized hours before. She was dying…again.
“What did you dream about, Inuyasha?” she asked.
“What do you mean”? puzzlement filling his features, as his brow furrowed together, and his hand dropped away from her shoulder.
“While you rested in my lap….What did you dream about that caused such a peaceful look on your face”? a slight smile making it’s way across her face, as she noticed his puzzlement. Turning his head to the side, he spoke…
“ I…I dreamed about Midoriko. I saw the battle the she was fighting, before she purged the Shikon Jewel from her body. She was calling out to me, as the demon wrapped his body around her. I could hear her saying over and over again…take the jewel….make a wish…wish for the ones you love.
Faintly, in their surroundings, they could hear his companions calling out for him in the distance. He had left them behind. This battle was something that he had to finish himself. He knew they would be mad with him. Sango wanted revenge for her people, and her brother. Miroku wanted revenge for the curse upon his hand, that made his entire family suffer. Shippou and Kagome just wanted the suffering to end for all of them. But out of all of them he wanted Naraku dead the most. Not just for himself, but for everyone that ever suffered from him.
Slowly, he turned his head towards Kikyou’s face. He felt her shudder, as a pained looked shot across her face. Fear began creeping back into his mind. She was dying, and there was nothing he could do. This was the second time that the same wound, inflicted by the same person, was going to claim her life once more.
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
all of your fears will pass away,
safe in my arms
you're only sleeping.
Tears began to form in his eyes. One by one they slowly crept out of his eyes. An endless stream forming, flowing down his cheeks. She noticed them.
“Why are you crying”?
“Be…because you…you are dying.” he said breathlessly, “and I…I can’t help you.”
“Everything happens for a reason Inuyasha…you shall soon see. I was not meant to live after this battle.”
“But I am afraid, I am afraid for me, and for you, as well as for my…my friends. What is going to happen now”?
“Fear not, Inuyasha…everything will pass, and everything will be alright…you shall see.” she replied, as she brought her hand up and began to wipe away the wetness from his cheek. “Now lay you head down and rest, you are safe in my arms.” she said as she began pushing on his shoulders.
Reluctantly, he turned, and shifted his body, resting his head in her lap, once more.
What can you see
on the horizon?
Why do those white gulls call?
Across the sea
a pale moon rises --
The ships have come to carry you home.
“Do you see, Inuyasha? Look to the horizon… they are coming for me.” Kikyou said, as she could faintly, make out the silhouettes of her soul catchers, in the pale moon light of the night.
Suddenly, the souls that she had collected, began descending from her body, as her soul collectors began circling around and up above her and Inuyasha’s body.
Dawn will turn
to silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass.
One by one, more and more of her souls began leaving her body, passing through the night air. She felt, herself getting weaker and weaker, as her soul catchers tried, in vain, to re-catch them and return them to her body.. Inuyasha sat back up, watching as the souls flew through the air towards the horizon. Turning, he looked at Kikyou, fresh tears forming once more.
Hope fades
into the world of night
through shadows falling
out of memory and time.
Don’t say
“We have come now, to the End”
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you’ll be here in my arms
Just sleeping.
“It is time….isn’t it?…you are leaving?… he asked.
He could see the faint shadows of Kagome and the others approaching towards the clearing, over Kikyou’s shoulder. She saw the look that he made over her shoulder, and turned her head, noticing that his companions were finally arriving. She turned back to Inuyasha and began to say…
“Inuyasha, It is time…I must…”
“Don’t say it Kikyou…just please don’t say it…” he pleaded as the tears streamed down his face once more.
“It is the end for me, Inuyasha. My soul catchers are calling for me, I must go. Fear not, Inuyasha, we will meet again…very soon, and you will be in my arms once more.” taking a deep breath, he clutched her arms, she spoke once again…”I love you Inuyasha, but I must go…please let me go…I promise I will be with you always…never forget that.” she said as she began pushing him away.
Her arm, once again, grabbed the injured shoulder, as she stood and backed away from Inuyasha’s weeping form. Looking back over her shoulder, a quick connection was made with Kagome. Knowing that Kagome knew what was going on, and that she had heard, she gave her a slight smile. Turning back she gazed at Inuyasha, still sitting on his knees, glancing up at her, as the soul catchers wrapped around her body, slowly lifting her up and into the cool night air.
“You were meant to be with her…..take care of him, Kagome.” she spoke as the soul catchers began flying into the west.
“No, Kikyou, please don’t… don’t go” Inuyasha said, his voice cracking as tears spilled from his eyes, as he began chasing her.
“You will see, Inuyasha…..you will see…..I am with you…always..” she said, as she reached forward and caressed his cheek, once more, for the last time.
Pulling her hand away, the soul catchers began lifting her higher and higher into the night sky. Inuyasha, fell to his knees, his eyes never leaving her form. Suddenly he felt a presence by his side. He knew who it was. Kagome. He didn’t bother wiping the tears away. He knew they all saw them. He felt her hug him from behind, murmuring into his shoulder. He turned his body hugging her fully, and crying into her shoulder.
Minutes passed, as his body slipped, down hers. He was finding it harder and harder to cry, his tears were all used up.
“Don’t leave me Kagome, please don’t leave me, too” he choked out as his head rested on her thigh.
“Shhh….rest Inuyasha. I will be right here when you wake up.” Kagome replied as she began rubbing his ear, trying to comfort him.
He soon slipped into a slumber, as Kagome kept on rubbing his ears.
He woke, just as dawn was breaking across the sky. The sun was rising, as the memories of the past night, flooded through his body. Turning slightly, he felt Kagome’s arms around him. His body was slightly covering hers, as his head rested just above her heart. The sound soothing him. ‘She must have laid back, and fell asleep, as I slept’, he thought, as he turned his face up, peering into Kagome’s peaceful, sleeping face.
He then remembered Kikyou’s words……
‘It is the end for me, Inuyasha. My soul catchers are calling for me, I must go. Fear not, Inuyasha, we will meet again…very soon, and you will be in my arms once more.’
‘She was right…I am in her arms once more..’ he thought as a slight smile made it’s way across his face. ‘I couldn’t protect you , Kikyou, but I will protect Kagome…It’s what you wanted….’
And with that final thought, he laid his head back down, and fell back asleep, as dawn made it’s way across the land.
What can you see

Why do those white gulls call?
Across the sea
a pale moon rises --
The ships have come to carry you home.
And all will turn

Into the west.
The End.
