The sun beat down on the drab brick building in which hundreds of students in sat at desks learning, or not in the case of Haruko Higurashi. The teacher was giving out the day's homework assignment but he couldn't pay attention. All he could do was look across the room at the girl he'd known for only one day.

**Flashback**

As Haruko hurried to class he noticed that the girl, Adrianna, was still following him.

“Don't you have to get to your homeroom,” he asked. She pulled a piece of paper out of her skirt.

“It says room 142 on this, is that your room too?”

“Yeah, but I haven't seen you in class before. Wouldn't I know you if you were in my home room?”

“Well, you see,” she smiled slightly, “I just transferred from America. My dad's in business and his company moved its headquarters to Japan so, here I am,” she spread her arms in a gesture of helplessness.

“That sucks,” said Haruko

“No kidding”

Their conversation was rudely interrupted by the first bell of the day and they both hurried off to homeroom.

Mentally Haruko kicked himself. He should have known it was too good to be true.

*Third Period*

“Hey Higurashi, where's your girl. Or did she get a good look at your head and run in the other direction” Waves of cruel laughter rolled across the room.

As Haruko took his seat several wadded up pieces of paper flew across the room. They were badly aimed but one hit his ultra-sensitive ears and he let out a yelp. The laughter taunts and impromptu missiles continued until the teacher entered the room and settled down the class.

**End Flashback**

He hadn't seen Adrianna all day, so apparently the only class she had with him was world history.

“Mister Higurashi, fascinating as Miss Mackenzie may be, I would like to remind you that one quarter, one quarter of your entire grade for the year rests on this report.”

Haruko snapped his head up in time to see the rest of the class laughing at him and Adrianna. This was not his day. Mackenzie was an interesting name, Adrianna Mackenzie; it had a nice ring to it.

It was hopeless. By the time the lesson had ended he had sunk once again into a deep stupor. It was only when he felt a tap on his shoulder that he was roused.

“Haruko, are you awake?” It was Adrianna. He jolted up in his seat and flushed.

“Yeah, just thinking”

“I can't believe the teacher assigned us a five page report on the Byzantine Empire and on my first day too. I mean, who wants to know the names of every emperor for a thousand years?”

“Yeah, but it's better to do it than fail the class.” Adrianna gave him a look that said all too plainly that she didn't care. There was no reasoning with some people Haruko mused.

All in all, he should have known it had been too good a day. Nothing this good ever lasted with him.

As he walked out of the building Haruko heard a voice behind him.

“Hey Higurashi; you've got a girl. Don't you feel like howling for joy?” There was sycophantic laughter behind Haruko. His fuzzy ears twitched at the abuse. The laughter turned into whoops of delight.

“Awww look, I always wanted a puppy.”

“Hey freak, were you born like that or was your mother so ashamed she had you that you had to have plastic surgery?”

Something inside Haruko snapped. He could take anything they said about him, but his mother was off limits.

“YOU PIECE OF DIRT, I'LL KILL YOU” With that Haruko launched himself at the kid who had uttered the offending sentence. As he flew through the air, claws unsheathed themselves from his fingers and the pupils of his eyes glowed red.

A fraction of a second before he ripped the kid to pieces, someone moving even faster than him slammed into Haruko and he crashed into the side of the school.

“What the hell?..” Haruko leapt up instantly alert. A few feet away from him Adrianna stood up brushing a loose strand of hair from her eyes.

“Come on Haruko,” she said, “I'll walk you home”

“HE INSULTED MY MOTHER, DO YOU GET IT?” Haruko roared.

In a blur of motion, Adrianna appeared in front of him.

“Lets go Haruko.” She said it in a tone that left no room for argument.

Head down, Haruko began to trudge home behind her. Halfway there, it occurred to him that she knew exactly where to go without being told. He didn't say anything though.

Twenty or so minutes later they arrived at the Higurashi shrine. As they approached the door, Haruko turned and started to say goodbye to Adrianna, but she kept on walking towards his front door.

“Wait, where are you going”

“Well, you said you'd help me with my homework,” she grinned slyly.

“Wha…” Haruko was speechless “When did I see that?”

The only reply he got was another sly smile.

As Haruko entered the shrine he looked around nervously before announcing that he was home. Almost instantly, Kagome came around the corner.

“Hi dear, how was…” she broke off once she caught sight of Adrianna. “Who is this?” she asked mildly

“This is Adrianna mom. We umm, have a project to do together”

Kagome's eyes narrowed but she seemed to accept the explanation, so the two teenagers made there way to Haruko's room.

“So,” said Adrianna, “What do you want to do? We don't really have a project to do”

“Want a snack?” asked Haruko.

“Sure”

Both sipping sodas, Haruko and Adrianna walked through the house. As they passed through the main room, Adrianna pointed to a glowing jewel mounted on the wall.

“What is that,” she asked.

That's the Shikon no Tama,” said Haruko, “It's always been there.”

“Wow, can I touch it?”

“I guess; but make sure mom doesn't see you”

“Okay.” Adrianna took the jewel down from the wall and gazed at it in wonderment. Suddenly Haruko heard footsteps in the hall. He grabbed for the jewel, and the second he touched it, the Shikon no Tama began to glow purple.
