Chapter 5: The Journey Begins

"Don't disturb Kohaku and Rin, okay," Sango leaned forward to her kids and said.
"Don't ever go outside the village gate," Kagome bent down to kiss the kids on their cheeks.
"Always listen to Kohaku and Rin, kido," Miroku said as he picked up his son and adored him.
"I want to go with you, father," the boy tightly held on to his father's clothes.
"No, son, we will face monsters and demons there," Miroku explained to his son with gestures to indicate the size of the demons. "You must not come with us."
"I'll fight by your side, father," drops of tear formed on the little boy's eyes.

"Shinta, you've got to stay here, and that's final!" the two sisters of the little boy pulled him away from Miroku.

"No...! No...!" those drops of tear fell off and more drops ensued. "I'll go with you father!"

Those cries reminded Miroku of the day when his father died. He behaved in the same way as his son was doing.

"Listen, Shinta, you can't go with your father now," Inuyasha picked up the little boy. "But I promise you, when you grow up I'll take you along with me."

"Lord I-Inuyasha," Shinta burst into tears.

"Hey, little fella, don't cry like that," Sano took the boy from Inuyasha. "I, the great Monk, Sano hereby proclaim that Shinta will be my companion for the next journey I undertake."

"Next journey?!" everyone's jaw dropped in amazement and surprise.

"Oh, I'm sorry for not informing you before," Sano scratched his head. "You see, I travel around the land helping people in need."
"Sano, that's great!" Kagome said as ran her hand through Shinta's hair, a broad smile formed on her face.
"Thank you, priestess," Sano said, returning the smile.

"We're getting late," Miroku said as he looked up. "The sun's going to come up soon."

"Kohaku, take care of the village and the kids while we are away," Sango told her brother.
"Yes, Sister, I will," Kohaku replied.

"Shinta, come over here, little boy," Sango bent down and kissed her son on his forehead. "Don't misbehave okay."
"No, mother, I won't," He was still sobbing.
"Don't cry boy, we will return soon," Sango got up on Kirara.

"Everyone, take care of yourselves," Kagome as usual rode on Inuyasha and bade goodbye to everyone.

"Yo, Sano, your place is here," Shippo called back Sano, who had gone to find a place on Kirara.
"Ah! Yes," Sano sighed. "But where IS MY PLACE?"
"Here you idiot!" Shippo changed into his bigger fox-demon form as Sano looked on stupefied.

"Goodbye son," Miroku waved at his son from Kirara's back.
"Bye Father! Bye Mother!" Miroku's kids bade them goodbye. The little boy still had tears in his eyes.

Shinta looked on with a sad sorrowful look as his parents and the rest went farther away from the village.

They were going through a breathtakingly beautiful forest. Everyone was amazed by the array of fruits and flowers that hanged from the branches of the trees. The birds that sat on those branches didn't attract less attention either.

"How beautiful this forest is!" looking on either sides of her, Kagome exclaimed.
"Yeah, Kagome," Inuyasha was rather indifferent to the beauty. His reply suggested that.

"Take this, priestess," Sano picked up a flower from a branch and threw it towards Kagome.
"What have you done, you fool!" Sango yelled at him.
"Why? Are you jealous that I gave the flower to the Priestess and not to you?" Sano's left eyebrow raised a little and a sly smile spread across his mouth.

"You fool! Turn back and see!" Miroku called out as Kirara flew past Shippo and Sano.

Sano looked back and the beholding that Miroku told him to, he decided to let out a scream.

"No...! Run...!” Sano looked back and screamed on seeing the bee demons approaching with their stinging needles pointing out.
"You idiot!" Shippo yelled at him and began to pick up speed. "Hold on tight."

“Shippo, you are too damn slow!” Inuyasha sneered as he sped past Shippo.
“Let's see then, Inuyasha,” Shippo shouted back as he darted ahead with leaps and bounds avoiding any sort of contact with the bees which were at a menacing distance from him.
"You're still slow, Shippo," Inuyasha gave him a toothful grin.

"Shippo...! They're getting closer!" Sano could hear the buzzing of the bees.

His tone suggested his eagerness to run away. But Shippo thought otherwise.

"Alright, I will beat those insects," Shippo jarred to a stop and the impact threw Sano forward.

"Fox fire!"

Shippo used his fox magic to thwart the oncoming swarm of bees but the bees didn't stop. Seeing his effort fail, Shippo thought that it would be wise for him to run away and as soon as the thought crossed his mind he turned back and began his run. But the bees were too near to him and he didn't have a chance to escape. He was caught in the middle of an insect-tornado.

"Wind-scar!"

Tetsusaiga's attack destroyed the tornado of bees and left a mess of broken bee-wings and a blazing trail of wind's tremendous power on the ground.

"Whoa! That was close!" Shippo heaved a huge sigh of relief.
"You should thank me, Shippo," Inuyasha gave him a side-glance.
"That wind-scar could have killed me," Shippo yelled at Inuyasha, not showing the respect which Inuyasha wanted to be shown.
"But it didn't… did it?" Inuyasha put his sword back in its scabbard. "Shippo, you've got a long way to go." Inuyasha said putting on an air of a wise person.
"What do you mean by that?!" Shippo yelled, clenching his fist as if ready to knock out Inuyasha.
"Want me to show you how?" Inuyasha clenched his fists as well.
"Bring it on Inuyasha!" Shippo charged towards him but before he could do a thing his face met Inuyasha's foot and all his enthusiasm and excitement at the prospect of a fight with his mentor, vanished as he thumped to the ground defeated, before even the fight began.

Shippo was reeling under the effect of that kick but more was in store for him.

"Sit!" Kagome yelled and the immediate outcome was the fluttering of birds. Inuyasha fell on Shippo with his full weight and the magic of the beads around his neck added more weight and dealt more damage to him. Shippo couldn't stop himself from letting out a cry of pain.

"Why you-"

“Quit it both of you!” Kagome cut Shippo off."This ends here!"

Kagome's yelling stopped Inuyasha and Shippo from advancing their fight.

"Inuyasha!" Kagome barked. "We're leaving."

Inuyasha looked at the frowning face of Kagome and fearing a repeat of the dust-biting, he picked her up on his back and left - without uttering a word. Shippo was still grounded until Sano came and helped him get up. After that they followed Inuyasha.

“Sango, this is reminding me of the past," Miroku said. "When we used to fly together like this.”

Miroku's limitless happiness at the flash backs of his and Sango's past experiences while flying made his hands inch closer to Sango, perhaps a bit too close for her liking.

“You can't behave, can you?” Sango slapped her hand into his face. Red five-fingered print of the hand formed on his face. A fitting reply to the lechery of the perverted Monk.

“Ah!" Miroku sighed heavily. "As quick as ever Sango!”

It was midday when the group halted by a river. The girls decided to take bath in the clear water of the river while the boys would watch for any approaching danger. By boys it's better to consider Inuyasha, Shippo and Sano, because Miroku would watch every other 'thing' but the 'approaching danger'.

“You better keep an eye on Miroku, Inuyasha” Kagome told Inuyasha with one measuring-up look at Miroku.
“Don't give me that look, Kagome!" Miroku said in self-defence. "after all these years, how could you think me to be so low!?”

Miroku sounded too innocent to be true so Inuyasha had to be extra cautious.

“Go have your bath. We will get some fishes in the mean time,” Sano suggested an alternative especially for Miroku and the diminishing spirit of the monk seemed to return instantly at that.
“Yeah!" Miroku agreed. "Let's go Sano.”

Without delay Kagome and Sango went towards the river and undressed themselves among the trees in the bank.

The girls immersed their bodies in the clear water of the river. The water being warm gave them enough comfort to remain in it for some time. The midday sun was too harsh on their bodies so they enjoyed every moment in the water.

They talked with each other and laughed occasionally at different issues. And when they were done bathing they returned to the bank to get themselves dressed.

"Looks like it's gonna rain," Kagome said as two droplets of water fell on her hand.
"Yeah," Sango nodded in positive.
"Inuyasha...!" Kagome called out for Inuyasha.
"What's the matter, Kagome?" Inuyasha came in an instant and asked.
"We need a shelter for the night Inuyasha," Kagome glanced at the dark clouds hovering over their heads. "It's going to rain."
"Miroku and Sano have found one," Inuyasha said without much fear for the prospect of a downpour.

Inuyasha began to walk away from the river. But just as he was about to quit the sight of the girls, Kagome's scream brought him back in it.
