Chapter 8: Secret of the Lake Part 1
“Sango!” Miroku stood up, taken aback by Sango's voice.
“Miroku,” Sango said. "I never knew you thought like this."
“So you've heard everything...” Miroku looked directly at Sango with a straight face having no signs of sorrow whatsoever.
“Miroku,” Sango looked at him. "Please don't lament your weakness."
Her eyes showed her care for her husband.
“I am not lamenting, Sango...” He looked down. "You've heard everything...so you know what I really want."
“You provided me every reason to live when I didn't have any,” Sango came towards the shrine door. "And I will always remain grateful for that... I won't ask any question of you."
“Thank you Sango...” Miroku began his walk towards the shrine door.
"Then, will you please come along with me?" She reached for Miroku's arms as he came near her.
"I will," Miroku replied.
Sango and Miroku walked towards the broken northern wall which led to a forest.
It was the night time. The full moon was there in the sky, spreading its silver light all around. The light fell upon the dark forest and illuminated it. The forest further inside didn't have the same illumination as the outer forest, mainly because of the thick veil of darkness that enshrouded it.
"Never saw this when we came in the morning," Miroku said as he took a quick look around him.
"It's because you were in that shrine throughout the day after returning from the market." Sango replied.
"But, what is it that you want me to see?" Miroku asked.
"Wait a little more, we're almost there." Sango hastened her footsteps.
Without further questions Miroku followed his wife. They walked for a few more moments through the uncannily quiet forest before they reached a lake.
"A lake?!" Miroku was stupefied. "Do you want me to fish here?!"
"Can't you make a proper guess?!" Sango's usual sarcastic tone returned.
"No...I mean YES, I CAN! But, what else can be the reason behind bringing me to a lake than fishing?"
"Follow me," Sango pulled Miroku by his arms and went into the lake.
"We'll drown Sango!" Miroku shouted. "We'll drown!"
"Hush!" Sango stopped his shouting. "Don't shout!"
"But-"
"Didn't I tell you to just follow me?!" Sango cut him off.
"Okay," Miroku sighed.
"Follow me, Miroku," Sango ordered Miroku. "Then you won't drown!"
"Huh?!" Miroku couldn't hear the last part. "Sango."
"Yeah."
"Don't you think it's a bit weird?"
"What's weird?!"
"This is no doubt water...but we aren't drowning! Even when we are...well, walking on it!" Miroku was astonished to be able to walk on the water.
"We're almost there!" She didn't pay much heed to Miroku's reason for being astonished.
"Yeah...but WHERE?!"
"Here," Sango replied.
As soon as her reply came the water under her and Miroku's feet dissipated and in it's place stairs appeared.
“What place is this?” Miroku asked, trying to see where the stairs led.
“These stairs lead to the Shrine," Sango replied. "The shrine of the Dragon God.”
"Dragon God?!" Miroku raised an eyebrow. "I've never heard of such a thing!"
"Well, now you are hearing," Sango calmly said. "Let's go in."
Sango led the way and Miroku followed her. They climbed down the stairs until they reached a door - a huge slab of stone to be precise.
"What now?!" Miroku looked around for a path. "Looks like this is a dead end."
"Not really!" Sango instantly replied. "I'll open this door just now."
Saying that she placed her hand on a switch on the wall. And upon pressing the switch, the door began to open, letting out a wave of bats and letting in the silver moonlight.
“No one has been here for a long time it seems!” Miroku said as he entered through the door after Sango.
“You are right, for centuries this place has been like this.” Sango replied, her voice was still calm whereas Miroku was anything but calm.
“But how did you know about this?” Miroku asked being much surprised at her reply.
“I know it all.” Sango made Miroku more and more curious.
But he suppressed his curiosity for the moment and busied himself with inspecting the new place. He looked around himself until his gaze finally got fixed on the wall opposite to him.
“This picture! But how?! The Shikon jewel, Inuyasha's father's sword... how?!” Miroku backed away, much in awe of the picture in front of him.
He knew very well about Sounga's powers and Shikon jewel's abilities were also not unknown to him. Seeing them together, if only, in a picture could startle anyone with the knowledge of their prowess. It was the same with Miroku.
“Sango, can you please tell what this picture is about?” Miroku asked without removing his eyes from the picture.
There came no reply.
“Sango!” getting no reply, Miroku looked back and in all possible directions in the room.
“I am here!” It was Sango's voice.
Sango had proceeded to the next room. So she didn't hear Miroku's voice. But she did hear his loud shout after that.
“Please come over here Sango.” Miroku called Sango again.
"Where?!" Sango asked.
"Here...What the...!" Miroku turned back to look at the picture but he couldn't see it. The wall didn't have the picture anymore.
But there was more shock and awe awaiting him. He didn't yet know... he simply received a hint. Nothing else...
