InuYasha's Strength
Chapter 9
To Kyoto and Back Again
InuYasha and Kagome argued for days as to where she would be staying. Finally Sango, (whom InuYasha later thanked gratefully), asked Kagome to stay with her while Miroku was at work.
“I know you probably want to stay home, but. I could use the company if you don't mind.”
InuYasha looked at Kagome. Knowing what her answer would be InuYasha appeared beside her with a suitcase.
“If you don't mind, she'll be with you for a couple days. I'm going to Kyoto tonight and I don't really like having to leave her alone in her condition.”
“InuYasha! You make it sound as if I'm-.”
“Going to go at anytime?” He interrupted. He watched Kagome's face turn from a frown to a pout.
“InuYasha, you and your nose are driving me nuts. If I really was going to go at anytime, you wouldn't leave me here-.”
“By yourself? That's why you are STAYING with Sango.”
Kagome slumped in her chair. “Fine, but you'd better be back on Saturday. I've made an appointment for Sunday.”
“Kagome.” Sango said in a sarcastically hurt tone. “If I didn't know any better, I'd say you didn't want to be here with me.”
Kagome's face paled. “No Sango, it's just that I don't want to put you in danger. Naraku is still-.”
“I know. That is why I volunteered to have you stay here while he was away. I'd feel better knowing you were here with me where we could protect each other.”
“Besides Kags. I'm only gone for a day. You can handle the Houshi's for a day right?”
Kagome said nothing, but slapped InuYasha as best she could from her chair.
“Oh, if I wasn't pregnant you'd be sorry right now.”
“Well, as long as you're ok.” InuYasha phone decided to ring at that moment. He put his hands to his lips and made a silence motion as he answered.
“Yeah Sesshomaru.”
“Do you really think that Sango will be able to defend Kagome with an infant in her hands?”
“Yes, actually.” InuYasha looked at Sango and walked away from the two women. He didn't want them to hear the conversation.
“How the fuck did you get this number?” He whispered through his teeth.
“InuYasha, surely you remember that it was I that set loose the virus in the school's admin office. It took them years to re-enter the information in the system.”
“Which is probably why you never graduated.”
“No, I graduated. Just in a different school.”
“What the hell are you up to?”
“I won't attack right now. Don't worry.”
“Yeah, and I'm supposed to trust you?”
“Yes. Actually. If I do, it will be you I attack not your mate.”
“Why haven't you attack us yet?”
“Something's take time. For now, be at peace. You will know when I begin my revenge.”
“Fuck you. I want you to come and face me. I want to take care of you myself.”
“You forget that it is not you I'm after. But I realize the only way to get what I want is to remove you. Soon InuYasha. Your greatest fear will become a reality.”
With that the line went dead and InuYasha made a decision. He turned back to the room he had left the women in. As he entered, the sight that met him was enough to stop his heart.
“InuYasha?” She had heard the conversation for the most part; enough to know that it wasn't Sesshomaru. She held her belly as she waited for him to speak.
“Kags, I changed my mind. You'll be coming with us.”
“You've been lying to me InuYasha.”
“Kagome, look we have to make the flight there in half an hour. We don't have time for this.”
“InuYasha, you not only failed to `mention' what you know about Naraku, but now you are refusing to tell me why?”
“Kagome can stay here InuYasha. I'll have Miroku bring some of the guys over and they can stay here. He won't attack with a full house.”
“I'd feel better if she were with me Sango.”
“Yet you were willing to leave me here with her when you knew so little yet so much about Naraku?”
“Fine. Stay here Kagome. I'll call you tonight.” With that, he walked out the door slamming behind him.
Kagome ran to the door flung it open.
“DON'T BOTHER! I WON'T ANSWER!”
“FINE THEN! I'LL CALL SANGO AND TALK TO KEITARO!”
“NO YOU WON'T!”
“YES I WILL!”
“DON'T BOTHER COMING HOME!”
“FINE!”
With that InuYasha got in his car, slammed his door and drove away. Kagome watched from their porch and when he was out of sight collapsed to her knees and sobbed.
“Come on Kagome. I'm taking you with me to my house. Keitaro! Come on you and mommy are coming to my house!”
“COMING!!!”
“Sango, I think we will stay here.”
“Kagome. That isn't wise.”
“I'm going to prove to InuYasha that I'm not the only thing he protects.”
“Kagome, even still. You shouldn't be alone. If you'd like I can stay here, so you feel more at home and comfortable.”
“I couldn't ask you and Miroku to do that, especially with Mai and Taro.”
“I honestly wouldn't have it any other way Kagome.” Miroku said as he came in. “I was on my way here when InuYasha called. The way it sounded, I am to give you a choice, stay here with us or come with us. Your choice.”
“ARGH. INUYASHA!”
“Kagome, he is only trying to keep you and Keitaro and the unborn baby safe.”
“Miroku's right Kagome. So, what will it be? My house or your house? Personally, I'm tired and we have a long way to go before home anyway. My vote is to stay here. What do you think Miroku?”
“I am inclined to agree with you my love. Besides, I don't have to go to work till later in the afternoon tomorrow. And I know that Mai loves to spend the night with Keitaro. So, my vote is to stay here as well.”
“Good, now that it's all settled, I'll make some dinner.”
“Ahem.”
Miroku and Sango both looked up at Kagome, who held an annoyed look across her face.
“Don't I get a say in this?” Miroku and Sango exchanged glances.
“No.” They said in unison. Kagome slumped from her place on the porch. Miroku walked over and helped her stand.
“Come on Kagome, InuYasha loves you and would rather die than put you and Keitaro in any danger. He blames himself for what happened all those years ago and it's not something he takes lightly.”
Kagome sighed as she struggled to move her swollen legs. “I guess I owe him an apology, huh? He shouldn't blame himself. I don't know what I'd of done if it hadn't turned out the way it did.”
“For one, you'd be dead.” A voice came from the darkened front yard.
“Who are you?” Miroku demanded.
“Koga?”
“Yep.”
“What are you doing here?” Sango asked as she stepped in front of Kagome. “Kagome is married to InuYasha; you know that you were there.”
“And you know that I married Ayame, so why are you so tense?”
“Your sense of timing is kind of convenient.”
“Yeah, well. I thought that I'd-.”
“InuYasha called us and asked us to come.” Said another voice. Kagome relaxed as Ayame stepped from the shadows. But then, she tensed.
`InuYasha called them? Something must be up. He was content on just letting me stay with Sango. So if he called them then....'
The phone in Miroku's pocket went off, scaring Kagome into a contraction. As Sango and Ayame helped her inside, Miroku answered.
“Hello?”
“Miroku, where are you?”
“Your house. Why?”
“Just checking. Is it just you or-.”
“Koga and Ayame just showed up too.”
“Good. I knew he wouldn't turn down the offer.”
“Yeah, but why?”
“Why'd you call him? What happened?”
“Naraku called me on my cell. I just don't want to take any chances.”
A groan from the house stopped any more words from being said.
“What happened? Is she all right?” InuYasha asked worriedly.
“When my phone rang, it scared her into a contraction. So when you coming home?”
“As soon as this damn meetings over. Sooner if she goes into labor.”
“So, I'll see you sometime tonight?”
“Why?”
“Just a feeling.”
“MIROKU GET IN HERE!” Sango called.
“I have to go InuYasha. I call you back all right? Or you call me when you get there. Bye!”
“Wait-.”
Miroku ran into the house finding where the two women and Koga had gone. As he entered the living room, he found Sango holding Kagome's hand and Ayame wiping her forehead with a damp cloth. Koga stood out of the way letting the women do their best to console a crying Kagome. Sango looked up at Miroku.
“You need to call InuYasha. She lost her mucous plug and it probably won't be long before her water breaks.”
“Sango, I was just talking to him. Why didn't you say something sooner? He's by now boarding and we won't be able to get to him for at least forty five minutes.”
“It's ok Sango.” Kagome hiccupped. “He needs to do this. Besides, he doesn't want to be here anyway.”
“KAGOME HIGURASHI TAISHO!” Kagome looked startled as her full name was practically shouted.
“MOM?”
“I'd better never hear you say that again. That man loves you so much he's asked that you be surrounded by your friends and family while he is away, for your protection! He even asked Koga, his rival to come here and stay in his house protecting his mate and children!”
Kagome sat up. Or tried to. Finally making it up with Sango's help she looked at her mother.
“He's hiding things from me! He hasn't told me anything about Naraku, or what he knows. Hell, he hasn't even told me that he's been calling my house!”
As those words left her lips, a silence fell. Kagome bowed her head and began to cry all over again. Her mother went to her side and took her in her arms.
“He called the other day, right after InuYasha left. He called me.”
Sango and Miroku exchanged worried glances.
“Why didn't you say something Kagome?” Sango cried.
“InuYasha, he was under a lot of stress, plus he was re-visiting the past and I didn't want him to have a heart attack. I don't want to loose him either.”
“Kagome he hasn't told you anything to my knowledge because he himself does not know.” Miroku explained. “The things he does know, he keeps to himself to protect you. The night you were in the hospital made him decide that he would protect you at all costs.”
“That is why we are married though. We can handle all life throws at us together. He just-.”
“Trying to protect you.” Koga said firmly. “He would be considered an abomination if he didn't.”
“That's a name he's been trying to get away from since the day he was born anyway. You were the only one who accepted him as he was and loved him in return.” Ayame said quietly. “You not only returned his love, but you have given him a son and soon a daughter. You have done what no other would do. You have loved him.”
“It's far too precious a thing to loose Kagome.” Her mother stated. “When someone like him has fought his entire life to be accepted, its only instinct that makes him fight to keep it.”
“You're right. You all are.” Kagome said as she tried to stand. “I guess now all that-.”
Then she stopped. They watched as a mix of emotions ran across her face and then she gasped and closed her eyes tightly.
“Kagome?” Sango said as she knelt down to her. “What is it?”
“Mom?”
“Dear?”
“Kags?”
“Miroku.” She whispered. Miroku walked to her and leaned down to hear what she said.
“Call InuYasha, my water just broke.”
