InuYasha's Strength

Chapter 19
InuYasha's Truth

He watched as the sun set from his place atop the shrine stairs. Had come back to this place if only to find comfort in the memories it held. Though, what he found was only pain.

Comfort from this place? What was he thinking?

Nothing but heartache remained here. Heart ache, loves first kiss and the faded stench of blood.

Kagome's blood.

Though it was here that they had made their vows, and it was here that they said forever.

He walked over to the tree he had often hidden in when Kagome was at home with her father. After the first time he had walked in on him beating her, he swore to never leave her alone with him again.

He promised her himself to protect her with his life.

It was that night that she gave him herself entirely.

****Flashback*****

Kagome had hidden herself in her room after she did the dinner dishes. Her father had been quiet and those kinds of days never ended well for her.

I had been there though. That is why he had been quiet.

It was two weeks after she had been hospitalized by her father's abuse, and I made sure he knew I was still around. I had tried to get Kagome to come and live with me but she refused.

`My dad is going through a tough time right now InuYasha. He needs someone to be there.'

“Feh.” If so, he needs to get a punching bag instead of using his daughter.

Kagome had soon fallen asleep, but I remained. I knew her father wasn't going to try anything while I was here. But something was wrong. I didn't know what, but I could smell her fear and I could sense something amiss.

So, I did what any normal guy would do.

I went to protect the sleeping girl from what she feared.

I entered through her bedroom window. I had done this quite a few times, back when I didn't know what was going on. Anymore though I did it just because I could.

Though I didn't make any noise as I entered, Kagome sat up in bed. The fear in her eyes told me that she wasn't worried about the man downstairs.

“Kags, its ok.”

She nodded.

“I'm going to stay with you tonight ok?”

“Ok.”

At first I thought I had misunderstood. But when she motioned for me to come and sit with her I knew she wanted me to stay. I went to her bed and sat down. I took a blanket and wrapped it around her shoulders and held her in my arms.

“Why are you afraid?”

“I'm not afraid.”

“Keh, I can smell it Kags.”

“Oh.”

“What's going on?”
“Naraku, he came by today.” As soon as those words were out her mouth I was about ready to tear the door off its hinges.

“Fucking bastard I'll-.” I was stopped by the simple motion of feeling her arm gently grab my own as her fingers intertwined themselves with my own.

“It's ok InuYasha.”

I don't know why, but those words and her simple innocent action sent me over the edge.

She gasped when I whirled around, took her in my arms and kissed her.

I was equally surprised when she kissed me back. As I broke the kiss, I heard her try to regain control of her rapid breathing.

“I promise Kagome, I will not let him touch you ever again. I'll die first.

I earned another gasp with that one.

“InuYasha, don't say such things.”

“I promise to protect with my life Kagome against your father, against Naraku- against any man that tries to hurt you!”

Imagine my surprise when she kissed me. The fire in that kiss was of a passion I had never felt with any other woman.

“InuYasha, I pledge my life to you then.”

“What?”

“If you pledge your life to protecting mine, I give you my own.”

“Kagome.”

“I will not change my mind.”

I couldn't help but smile as my heart leapt in my chest.

She just gave herself to me.

She is mine.

Mine and mine alone.

With no more said, we fell into another kiss and held each other the rest of the night. I knew that night, they we were meant to be.

*****End of Flashback*****

`Now, years later we have a son and a daughter. Both now hold what their mother was entrusted the day she was born. The Shikon no Tama. The sacred and the cursed jewel.'

“Dad!” InuYasha turned to see his son come up the steps with Mai, followed closely by Keade and Sango.

“What is it?”

“Dad, I ate all my breakfast.” Keitaro said proudly. InuYasha looked to Sango, and at her nod InuYasha bent down and picked him.

“That's my boy!” He said as he ruffled his son's hair. “What do you want for lunch?”

InuYasha set him down and watched as indecision scrolled across his son's face. How much more it glowed after just a week.

InuYasha frowned inwardly.

A week.

Kagome had now been gone almost two months. And he was still no where closer to finding her.

“DAD!”

InuYasha looked down at the little boy who held his mothers love in his eyes.

“Did ya hear me?”

“No, sorry son. Where did you want to go?”

“Chucky Cheeses!”

“Heh, alright. Let's go.”

Suddenly he felt as if though his heart had been torn apart. He felt himself grab his chest as he felt hit constrict. He looked up to see Sango throw the children at Keade and run to his side.

“INUYASHA!”

He could see her lips moving, but no voice came with his name as it left her mouth.

Suddenly he saw her.

All his worries, all his sorrow, all his regrets, and all his love- his heart stood right in front of him.

She was crying- bleeding and broken. Though she looked alive, the life that her eyes had held was seemingly gone.

InuYasha gasped.

This was indeed the woman that held his heart, but only his regret that lay dormant.

“Kikyo.”
