InuYasha’s Strength
Chapter 21
Painful Visions, Truthful finds.
Sesshomaru waited with Myoga in the small gray-headed mans office in the Police Station.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m not going to do any blood tests and the autopsy is on hold, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“You have a reason to doubt then?”
“No, I have no permission for such an act.”
“That is the only reason? Normally you would suspect the husband first hand and others later.”
“So long as there was a reasonable doubt in InuYasha, yes he may have been suspected in her death. However, I was there when he married her. Plus, both you and I know he would never do such a thing to that girl.”
“I know it. Just wanted to make sure that you did.”
“I did and do.”
“How will we go about this then?”
“What do you mean Mr. Taisho?”
“My brother is coming to identify his wife’s remains, correct?”
“Yes, he is.”
“Have you ever seen a Demon whose mate made him live, whilst she died?”
“Many times.”
“My brother will be far worse, as Kagome carried his child, died so that the child may live AND released him before she did so.”
“As any good mate would do, I know their story quite well. I was the detective in your sister-in-laws near murder case.
“Then you know that he will do anything to destroy what has destroyed his mate.”
“I do.”
A silence passed between the two, as they both imagined what InuYasha was capable of doing.
“He will kill Naraku.”
Myoga sighed.
“And that’s a problem?”
-*-*-*-*-*-*-
InuYasha was had cried his heart out, but all the pain and fear of her loss remained.
‘Did she really release me?’
InuYasha glared at the building of which he was supposed to meet Myoga, but the glare was quickly replaced with a look of a cold hearted man.
“Are you ready?” Miroku asked as he stood next to InuYasha.
InuYasha said nothing, but went ahead.
****Dream*****
InuYasha sat next to the well, holding onto his daughter and laughing at his son who tried to do a cart-wheel, but only managed to fall over sideways.
‘What are they doing here? Why are they here?’
InuYasha looked up from his son and stared into the darkening sky. She watched as he closed his eyes and whispered.
‘What did he say?’
As if an answer to a prayer, his words reached her ears on a gentle breeze.
Kagome felt the pain that her mate had felt. She wanted to cry out, but found her words were nothing more than a whisper.
“InuYasha.”
Wanting only to hold him, she stepped forward..
She suddenly felt cold, as if something had suddenly wrapped her in a dark embrace. Holding her, silencing her.
Nonetheless, she screamed for him.
***InuYasha Point of View***
He sat watching Keitaro run and play while Mieko tried to wiggle out of his lap and join her brother. He laughed as Keitaro tried to do a cartwheel, but only succeeded in falling over. When the boy got up, he dusted himself off and looked at his father and grinned.
InuYasha felt his heart stop.
‘He has Kagome’s smile.’
He turned his eyes toward the sky. All the memories of them flowing through him like a flood, bringing the tears he had fought so long. He felt like screaming the pain which flowed through his soul, but found he could barley whisper.
“I need you here with me Kagome.” He whispered.
Suddenly, it was as if God made his heart smile. He heard her whisper his name.
“InuYasha.”
He turned to see her, only to watch as she was engulfed by darkness-screaming for him.
“InuYasha, help me!”
He felt himself get up and race towards her, only to hear his children scream and then Kagome.
“No! InuYasha! Protect them! Don’t let him come near them! PLEASE!”
He turned to see the darkness coming towards his son and daughter. Keitaro held the crying Mieko as he ran for his father.
“Keitaro, come to me!” InuYasha screamed as dashed for his children.
He grabbed them up in his arms and jumped away from the impending darkness that had threatned them. He turned to find Kagome.
All he saw was her dark eyes, her tears, her plea.
“Love them for me InuYasha.”
“Kagome! Don’t leave me!” He cried as he raced to help her. As he reached her, he was repelled and thrown away from her.
Then, the voice that had shaken him so long ago, rang through to his heart again.
“This time, she is MINE.”
****End Dream****
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
‘That’s what it meant. It meant that she was going to die, while I protected our kids.’
The dream had plagued him now for a week, and the moment he heard Myoga’s voice- he knew that the dream had been a vision of what was to come.
Lost in thought, InuYasha stared at the floor. Leaving Miroku to answer the questions…
“What is your business here today?”
“My name is Miroku Houshi, and this is InuYasha Taisho. Detective Myoga called Mr.Taisho earlier to see if he could possibly identify a body.”
“Let me call up to his off-.”
“That won’t be necessary.” Myoga told the clerk as he came up behind the two men. “I can handle it from here, thank you Keito.”
“Yes sir.”
Myoga turned from the clerk and looked at InuYasha, who met Myoga’s sad and tired eyes, with his own fury and pain filled gaze.
“You said you have her?”
“I said I think we might.”
“You said I needed to identify Kagome.”
“If she is in fact Kagome. It looks like the body has been preserved, but the face is battered. We can’t really tell.”
“Did you think of doing a DNA test?” Miroku asked. “It may have saved us the pain of coming here.”
Myoga looked at Miroku and sighed.
“Of course. We didn’t out of respect. InuYasha the son of a close friend of mine. I wouldn’t do anything of the sort without the families blessing first.”
“How about an autopsy?” InuYasha asked suddenly.
“Of course.”
“Then why the fuck wouldn’t you do a DNA test? Her body is already mutilated and mangled, why not take a few bits of DNA?”
“InuYasha.” A reserved voice came from behind the three. “Calm yourself. I told him not to.”
All three turned to see Sesshomaru followed closely by Kagura.
“It was my own wish that she not be autopsied until you had seen her.” Kagura stated. “Unfortunately, it’s the first thing they did.”
InuYasha stared at the two for a moment before turning to Myoga.
“I have had enough. Let me see her.”
Myoga nodded and began to walk towards the dreaded hall. InuYasha began to follow, when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Do you want me to come with you?” Miroku asked.
InuYasha felt his heart tense, and was about to burst out when he remembered what he was there for. He sighed and turned to Miroku.
“Yeah. You can all come if you wish.” With that, he turned and followed Myoga.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Though he walked within a crowd, he suddenly felt alone. He saw no one around him, heard only the sound of his feet touching the ground.
As they approached the dreaded room, he felt his heart grip with grief and panic.
The walls seemed to taunt him, tease him and remind him.
‘You failed her.”
‘You let her die.’
‘You killed you children’s mother.’
‘Worthless hanyou.’
As the doors opened, he felt his heart become irate, only to seemingly freeze.
He walked in, his mind screaming and his heart cursing every step.
Myoga went in behind the table and waited for the others to approach the table.
“InuYasha. Are you ready?”
InuYasha took a breath in and nodded.
Myoga lifted the sheet, Miroku and Kagura gasped. All turned to InuYasha whose amber gaze filled with pain and another emotion that none could decipher.
“Close the door Myoga and lock it down.”
“InuYasha?” Sesshomaru called as his brother stood. “What is it?”
“This woman, bares no mark. She is not my mate.”
InuYasha took the woman’s lifeless hand and squeezed it. Tears flowed freely as he whispered tearfully.
“Kikyo.”
-*-*-*-*-*-
Silence had fallen in the room after he had left the two women alone.
Kagome looked in horror at the woman who lay in her lap gasping for breath.
“WHY? Why would you do something like that Kikyo?” She cried angrily.
“You are a wife, a mother, a sister and a daughter. The world would loose more if the lost you instead of me.”
The pain from Kagome’s shoulders was immense, but the sight of the woman who once had taken everything from her and given it back truly made her heart break.
“Kikyo, just hold on ok? You’ll be ok. I’ll protect you.”
“Don’t be foolish Kagome. I am going to die; I accept it and welcome it. Survive Kagome, I will protect you as much as I can.”
“No, don’t you dare. Don’t you dare die on me! InuYasha would never forgive me if you died while I sat by and let you.”
“Kagome, this was my choice. If InuYasha can’t understand that and he blames you then he is unworthy of you.”
“Kikyo please hol-.”
Kikyo coughed violently, blood forming in her mouth and throat.
“I can’t any longer Kagome. I’ve tried to call on InuYasha, but-.”
“I can’t reach him Kikyo, you won’t either.”
“I’m not afraid to use any means necessary Kagome.”
Kikyo looked at the girl that had once been her hatred, the bane of her existence and smiled.
“My dearest friend. Live and love for me. I promise your salvation will soon come.”
With that, Kikyo took a deep breath. As she released that which was her last breath, she whispered.
“InuYasha.”
Kagome watched as the woman whom she held as best she could whisper her lovers name and then as her soul seemingly left her body.
Kagome suddenly felt alone.
Kikyo was gone. Now what was to stop Naraku from getting what he wanted? What about Keitaro and Mieko? And InuYasha?
Kagome had resolved herself not to let him win, but all hope for her rescue had faded from her mind only moments before as this woman died in her arms.
She felt her heart stop, and she hoped it wouldn’t start again.
When it did, she cried, screamed and wailed until she was hoarse.
“No, Kikyo. I will die just as you.” Kagome did not hear the door open nor see them as the came in to take away the body that once was Kikyo. Instead, she only met darkness. As she slipped into regretful slumber, she heard the man she love whisper the name she which tore her heart.
“Kikyo.”
-*-*-*-*-*-*-
InuYas ha stared at Kikyo’s battered face, before he replaced the sheet that had covered Kikyo’s remains.
His heart ached.
His soul screamed.
His mind urged him to kill.
‘No. I won’t lose control. If Kikyo is here. Then Kagome is still alive somewhere. I need to maintain control. So I can find her. Alive.’
“I have an idea.” InuYasha said quietly.
“What is it?” Miroku asked as he tore his eyes from the sheeted corpse.
“The woman on the table is Kagome. We will announce it today. Kikyo is the answer to bringing Naraku out from hiding. If he believes that we think Kagome is dead, he will come after what is left.”
“What about the kids?” Miroku asked sullenly. “What will you tell Keitaro?”

“You get ahead of yourself, little brother.”
All eyes turned to face the one who had said the least.
“And what might you mean by that?”
“What he means is, your children carry the halves of the Shikon no Tama. Kagome holds the center piece.”
“Wait a minute! How do you know all this?”
“Its no secret to those with a good nose, InuYasha. Or, spiritual powers.”
Sesshomaru turned to Miroku.
“Don’t you agree?”
Miroku only nodded. Kagura shook her head and sighed.
“Look, if he finds out about the children he’s not going to care about you. He’s going to go directly for-.”
Silence filled the room as the beeper of Sesshomaru’s alert system went off.
“He knows.”
