“Die, Inuyasha!”
Rage boiled inside of her, pushing aside the pain from the gaping wound in her shoulder. Blood flowed freely from that wound, creating a pool of dark, coppery blood at her feet.

That didn’t matter now. What mattered was
him. He was getting away.
She felt the soft feathers of the arrow seconds before releasing it from the bow, and it whistled through the air with dangerous speed.
A satisfying
thud told her that she had hit her target. Rushing forth as fast as her injured body would allow, she knelt to retreive the Shikon No Tama.

Lifting her eyes, the sight before her made her heart jerk opposite ways.

The hanyou which she had come to love, was pinned helplessly to the God Tree. Pain was written across his features. His lips moved franticley, yet no sound escaped. His golden eyes were filled with confusion, mistrust.
“Why Kikyo?”
“Traitor!” she screamed. “You betrayed me, demon.”

Fresh waves of pain undulated inside of her, and spots danced before her eyes. Her knees became weak and buckled. Using the bow for support, she cast one last weak, tired glance towards Inuyasha. His form was limp, pinned to the tree, his head lolled to one side.
Then, everything was dark.

“Inuyasha!”

The sound of her voice startled her out of a fitful sleep and Kagome shot up in her makeshift futon, back rigid, skin laced in a thin sheen of presperation.
Hands shaking uncontrollabley, Kagome’s shoulders heaved and a sob ripped through the girls throat.
His eyes! His eyes!
“Kagome?”
The others were wakeing, and she realised that she had not simply said his name. She had screamed it. Mortified, she buried her face in her hands, unable to keep the sobs that racked her body at bay.
“Kagome, are ye alright?”

A warm hand rested on Kagomes shoulder, and she looked up through lashes laden with tears.
Kaede, hair dishelved from sleep, looked down at her with a worried expression.
“What’s going on?” Shippo asked, the whine so frequentley accompanied by his words clearly escalating.
“Nothing, Shippo.” Sango said, kindly with a small yawn. She patted the fox demon’s head, and continued. “She just had a bad dream, that’s all.”

Hysteria slowly began swimming through Kagome’s nerves, and her breath came in short, frantic gasps.
That certainly hadn’t felt like a dream. Oh no, not a dream at all.

Inuyasha had called her Kikyo. Kikyo. She had let the arrow fly, had let it ram into his chest cavity, mere inches from his heart and--
“No!” she yelled, springing to her feet.
“I didn’t do it! She did! She did!”
Stumbling blindly in the semi-darkness of the hut, Kagome burst through the opening and shreiked when she rammed into Inuyasha. His hands came up instinctivley and grasped her thin upper arms to steady her.

“Kagome?! What’s wrong? I heard you scre--”
“Don’t touch me!” she cried, tears spilling over her swollen lids. “Don’t touch me, let go!”
Wrenching herself free from Inuyasha, who stumbled back in surprise, she broke out into a sprint, headed nowhere in particular. Anywhere but here, her mind screamd. Anywhere but here!

Her aching feet led her to the stream where earlier that night, she had been thinking of Inuyasha.
“Kagome!”
He wasn’t far now. A few moments more and he would reach her.
Steadying her breath, Kagome closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. As her lungs filled to their utmost capacity, she opened her lips and screamed, “SIT BOY!”

A loud crash signalled the charm had worked and Kagome scrambled onto the banks of the shallow stream, slipping clumsily into the muddy water. The current was surprisngly strong, and she stumbled several times before regaining her balance, and hurrying to the other side of the stream.

Her fingers scrabbled at the long wisps of grass, and she dragged herself onto the banks, the short grey t-shirt she had worn to bed sopping wet and muddy from her hips to mid-thigh, where the article of clothing ended.

“Die, Inuyasha!”

Had she said that? Had she said those awful words?
With dawning horror, as she righted herself and continued running, now through the ever-thickening forest, she realised No, it wasn’t her.
It was Kikyo who had said that.

Kikyo who had let the arrow fly. It was her who’d sent him to his fifty years of sleep. She had intended for him never to wake, never to open his eyes again. Never cause harm.
But it wasn’t him, she thought, her vision clearing as her tears dried. It wasn’t him, Kikyo! It was all Naraku!

~

Pain reverberated through his skull as his face was slammed into the Earth.

She had really told him to sit.
His shoulders ached horribley as he planted his palms onto the disturbed dirt and pushed himself back onto his haunches.
His ear twitched, and his eyes narrowed.

His sight was only slightly marred by night. He could still see fine, and it didn’t change his powerful ability to smell, either.

He’d come to the hut as fast as he could.

He’d stayed back at the God Tree for the night, figuring it would be safe in the village.
Something about Kagome’s attitude that day had made him wary, and he wanted to give her some space.
However, her frightened scream had told him that staying so far away was not a good idea.

After he’d arrived, the sight before him gave him an overwhelming sense of releif. And fear.

There seemed to be no danger yet the distress leaking from inside of the hut was focused on one person, and one person only: Kagome.
He had started for the hut, when she’d burst through the doorway, her long hair matted to her face, her thin shoulders shaking. He’d only caught a single, fleeting glimpse of her face before she had rammed into his chest. Frightened.

She was scared of something.
He had heard her scream his name from half a mile over.

It wan’t a scream of pain, he now realised as he’d gingerly climbed to his feet.
It was a scream of somethingelse. Lonliness.
Then why, he mused, was she shaken so badly? He’d never seen her behave like that. Never had she pushed him away, yelled at him.

His muscles burned, itched to chase after her.

He looked back at the others, a mask of anger hiding how he really felt.
“Stay here!” He snapped, before lunging forth in close pursuit of Kagome.

~

Her breath was whistling now.

Her heart thudded loud inside of her ribs, and her knees threatened to buckle at any given moment.
The tree’s were beginning to clear now, thinning out into a wide expanse of field.

The Bone Eaters well lay ahead, and if she could make it to the otherside before Inuyasha caught up, she would never come back.

You killed him, Kagome. You killed him.
This voice at the back of her mind grew stronger as she approached the hill, calves burning at the steep incline.
Panting, she continued her powerful stride up the hill, making little effort to ignore the voice that was now shrieking at her.
Why didn’t you finish the job? it wailed. Why didn’t you make sure you lived?!
“Oh, shutup.” She gasped, holding her side. A painful stitch eased it’s way up her ribcage, and she had to stoop to regain her breath.

“Kagome!”
He’s not far now, the voice said. Not far at all. Why don’t you turn around? Face him like the warrior you are!
“I am not a warrior,” Kagome muttered, stumbling forward.
“I’m a girl from the future who fell into this world by accident, and I was stupid enough to--” she caught herself from saying the last six words outloud, yet she said them in her mind, clearly as if she had spoken them.
--fall in love with a hanyou.

That’s right,
the voice prattled on. You fell in love, and look what happened!
The tears she had thought were done falling, threatened once more to spill over and she whiped at her eyes with a dirty forearm.
“Kagome!”

His voice was much closer. Infact, right behind her. She whirled around on her heel, and stumbled backwards in surprise.
A hand shot out and firmly grasped her wrist to keep her from falling.
Her eyes lifted from his strong hand holding her frail wrist to his sun-kissed face, his sharp, masculine features. His amber optics flashed and he let go of her wrist once she had balanced herself.

“What the hell are you doing?” he roared, stepping closer to her.

She shyed away from him, and held her head in her hands.
“Don’t talk to me.” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Inuyasha stopped his advance, and watched her. Asessed her.

“Die, Inuyasha!”

She couldn’t take it. She could take this suffering, this pain, this horrible longing no more.
It had to end.

~

“What the hell are you doing?”

She stepped back from him, and clasped her head in her hands. His eyes moved along her body, which was dirty as hell and shaking.
Her shift which she had obviously worn to bed was smeared with dirt and grasstains.

Her feet were muddy, and her shins and calves were slick with fresh dirt aswell. Her hair was tangled, and still matted to her face which was sweating profusley from running.
And her eyes..
Their gazes locked for mere seconds, yet the image of Kagome Higurashi standing there before him, in this state, was seared into his mind for eternity.

Dark brown eyes, wide, blank.
Unseeing.

Her small mouth was trembling, and her skin, which had always been fair
(just like Kikyo’s, he recalled quickly)
was paper-white, under the moonlight which to him, had grown impossibley large.

“Don’t talk to me.” she muttered, dropping her gaze. She spoke so quietly that even he almost missed it.
He stopped walking, and gave her yet another once-over. This couldn’t be the Kagome he knew. Something, something was definatley wrong here. Wrong with her.

And he was going to find out.
