Chapter 6 - The Letter

 

Inuyasha squirmed in resistance, trying to pull his lips away from his brother's pressing mouth, from the heat that filled his face and adrenaline-filled body. He was trying to goad the older demon into killing him, not into kissing him. Sesshoumaru finally pulled away and stared at his younger brother. The golden color was returning to both of their eyes and both were panting hard.

 

I can't believe he just did that! What did he just do? “Sesshoumaru, what…” Inuyasha was unable to form the question. He pushed at his brother again and Sesshoumaru moved off of him.

 

The older demon sighed. “I didn't want you to find out like this. I was waiting until you were better, but you gave me no choice.” He growled out the last few words.

 

Inuyasha squirmed back until his elbow struck something hard. He pulled himself up, wincing, until he sat with his legs out, back was against the wall. “I don't understand.”

 

Sesshoumaru noticed the wince and shook his head. “And then you forced me to fight you. Come on, I know some of those stitches pulled loose.” He rose and walked to his brother, carefully picking up the younger boy and carrying him to his office. Sesshoumaru set the hanyou on his leather couch and rummaged through his desk for medical tape.

 

“So explain.”

 

Sesshoumaru found the tape and began to address the younger inu's wounds before speaking. “Kagome was not your mate, because she was a human. Even though you are a hanyou, your dominant youkai blood insists that you have a youkai or hanyou mate. You can love a human, you can marry a human, but you cannot mate a human. Does that make sense?”

 

“Not really.”

 

“Look, I took Rin as my wife, but I did not follow her into death because she was not my mate. Father died and your mother did not follow him into death because they were not mates. I will not allow you to follow Kagome into death because she was only your wife, not your mate. She is not alone in death; many humans die. Her soul is now with the souls of your exterminator and monk friends who died in the feudal era. You do not need to protect her, because her soul is finally safe and at rest. Do you understand now?”

 

Inuyasha shook his head, changed his mind, and nodded. “But what about mother?”

 

“My mother had the gift of prophesy. She told father that after she died, he must take a human wife. He would know who she was when he saw her and he must have a child with her regardless of the response of other youkai or humans. He and I must raise that child and ensure that it does not die before it comes of age. That is why father married the hime, and why he died for you when you were born. That is why I took you in and taught you to fight, and why I always insisted that I would be the one to kill you, not some weak ookami or some such. Understand?”

 

“Yes, but why am I so important? I'm just a hanyou.”

 

Again the demon sighed. “Your destiny and mine are closely intertwined. I have a letter from father explaining part of that destiny, but it mentions a second letter which I have no knowledge of. It may now me destroyed for all I know. For our destiny to be completed, we must both survive, together.” Sesshoumaru finished tending the reopened wounds and replaced his medical tools, removing something from the desk as he did so. “This is the letter from Father. It tells you just about everything I have told you.”

 

Inuyasha began to read the letter, realizing that Sesshoumaru had indeed told him the truth. It was in the last paragraph that Inuyasha found the one thing he had not been told.

 

Sesshoumaru, you must complete your destiny, as must little Inuyasha. You must keep him safe until he is old enough to take a mate. When that time comes, my son, you will mate with him. You shall claim him as your own, and then your destinies will be fulfilled. At that point, if I am no longer alive, you will receive a second letter from me detailing the rest. Until then, Sesshoumaru, protect him with your life, and when the time is right, take Inuyasha as your mate.

 

Inuyasha almost dropped the letter. Take me as his mate? What? He looked up, hoping to be told that it was all a joke. Instead, amber eyes full of lust met his as Sesshoumaru began the hunt.
