Chapter Five: Remembrance of Dear Sister

When I woke up, it was dark outside. “Hmm…maybe I can sneak out.” I climbed out of my bed and crack my door open. No, I can't do that. Too many guards. I sat back down and thought for a while. Then I had it. I could tie a couple of my clothes together and climb out of the window. Wait, what am I thinking? What would my parents think?! I just decided to put it off for awhile.

That day, I decided to go down to the beach where me and Bankotsu shared our first kiss. Honestly, that's my favorite place to be.

I miss those days… I thought about how Bankotsu held me close and told me he would be with me until the sun sets forever. Tears came to my eyes. “Bankotsu…” I had been able to manage myself fine until I came here. I sat down on the damp sand and let the cold sea air brush against my face. “Until time ends,” I muttered, “I'll always love you.”

I lay on my bed daydreaming about Bankotsu. I thought about him smiling at me. Him crying into my arms. Him kissing me passionately…

“Kurama!” I jumped out of my thoughts when I heard my father. “What is it, father?” He walked into my room. “You have visitors.” I sat up confusedly. Visitors? “They say they know you.” I smirked. I bet its Inuyasha.

I walked out into the front yard, followed by three of my best soldiers. “Show yourselves,” I clutched Kiamu tightly. Inuyasha and his four companions walked up to me.

“Inuyasha,” I said. I turned around and waved off my guards. They walked inside. The girl I knew as Kagome stepped forward. “Hey, you're that girl that hung around Bankotsu all the time.” I glanced at her sadly. “I was.” Inuyasha rolled his eyes. “Let's cut to the chase. Hand over the jewel shard.” I reached into my undergarments and pulled out the crystal shard Bankotsu had given me earlier. “This?” He nodded. “Yeah, give it.”

Then the monk-looking man stepped up. “Well Inuyasha, before she does, I would like to ask her a question.” He grabbed my hands in his. What the hell…? I didn't say anything though. I just let him do what he was doing. “Would you do me the honor of bearing me child?” I gave him the what-the-hell-it-your-problem-don't-ever-ask-me-that-again-or-I'll-get-Bank otsu-on-your-ass look. He drew back. “I take that as a no.” Then the demon slayer girl hit him upside his head with her large boomerang. “I'm sorry, was he bothering you?” I smiled. “It's okay.”

Inuyasha rolled his eyes once more. “Hand over the shard!” I rolled my eyes also. “No way in hell!” I put the shard back into my undergarments and Inuyasha closer to me. “HAND IT OVER!!!!!” I drew back quickly. “Do you think I'll hand it over so easily?” Kagome grabbed Inuyasha's arm. “C'mon, Inuyasha. Be nice. We need a place to stay for the night.” I looked at her. “You do? I'd be happy to provide a place to stay for you!” Miroku smirked. “Do you have any sisters?” I frowned. I totally forgot about my sister Mio.

See, Mio was my best friend…until she left. When she was seventeen, our parents arranged for her to marry a prince from China. Mio really didn't like the guy. So when they married, she had an affair with the gardener and eventually got executed on her own property. This is why I hope that I don't have an arranged marriage. I want to be with someone I love with all my heart.

When I had returned to the present, I was back at the beach, standing in the shallow part of the water. Then I heard a voice.

“Tell me,” I turned around to see where the voice came from. It was that monk. “Tell you what?” I stepped out of the water. “Why is it that you looked so sad when I asked if you had any sisters?” I frowned once more. “You really want to know the story of my dear sister?” He nodded. I sighed and sat down on the sand with him. “Okay. See, when I was younger, my sister Mio lived with us in this castle. Then on her seventeenth birthday, she was shipped off to the continent to marry some prince. She didn't like the idea, so she decided that she would find real love while she was there. Her love happened to be the gardener at her palace. Since she couldn't seem to break her husband's heart, she had an affair. A few months later, her husband found out and had her publicly executed.” Miroku's face fell. “I'm so sorry.” I turned away and wiped a tear away from my face.” I just kept thinking of the last time I saw her.

“Alright,” A regal-looking girl in a purple kimono said reluctantly. She had brown hair and navy blue eyes. She was fair skinned and when she smiled, her face glowed. I watched from the crack of my bedroom door. No Mio, I thought. You can't leave. See then, I was 11 years old. I didn't show much emotion and my best friend was my 17 year old sister, Mio. I loved her to death.

“Bye father, bye mother.” She held a sack of jewels and other knickknacks in her hand. My mother walked up to her and hugged her tightly, while my father stood and watched sternly.

“I'm off,” And right when she was about to walk out, I sprang out of my room. “Mio, wait!” In my hand I held a wooden trinket. When I reached her, I held it out to her. “Here, dear sister. This is so you'll never forget our friendship.” Tears fell from my eyes, as did hers. “Even if you didn't give me this,” She said as she touched my cheek. “I would never forget you `Rama.” She took the trinket from me and wiped her eyes with her hand. “Goodbye.” And that was the last time I ever saw her.

“I bet you feel horrible,” Miroku placed a hand on my shoulder. “She was my best friend,” I was the brought to complete and utter tears. Miroku took me in his arms and I sobbed into his chest.

“Look at that womanizer,” Sango screeched. Kagome, sweatdropping, was trying to comfort her. “I mean really, that girl has Bankotsu! What does she need houshi-sama for?! She's USING him!” Kagome laughed nervously. “Envy is one of the seven deadly sins, Sango.”

As I lay in Miroku's arms, I thought about the whole love triangle between Sesshy, Bankotsu and I. Man, I really couldn't afford another boyfriend. My first boyfriend is the reason I'm laying in this dude's arms now. Damn it all. I really didn't want to get up, because he seemed like such a nice guy, but I had to.

“Um, Miroku-chan?” I pulled out of his embrace. “Yes?” I grimaced as I talked. “I really can't afford to do this.” He looked puzzled. “What? Why?” I looked at him with my sparkling blue eyes. “Haven't you noticed? That demon slayer girl is looking at us with Satan's eyes.” Miroku slowly turned to see Sango, just as I said, looking at us with Satan's eyes. He nodded in agreement and we pulled apart.

That night, I sat at the foot of my bed and read the only letter that I had received from my dear tragic sister.

Dear Kurama,
I'm having a wonderful time here on the continent. I really dislike my husband, but that's alright. I've found love in my gardener, Shin. He's sweet and kind and lovely. Well sis, I have to go now, but I promise I'll write you some more.
You dearest sister,
Mio
