“Kagome, you just claimed, in front of the Pack, that you take me as your mate.”

Those words held more meaning than she could have ever known. Having lived with the pack, she knew what honor was. She knew if she were to deny Kouga—now—she would be disgracing him. And in his loyalty to her, his love, he would accept it. She knew that she couldn’t though. When she had defended herself and Kouga, she had done so willingly. She had openly defended him. With that, everyone knew she had let him take her—willingly. Ever since Kouga had first met her, he had fought for her affections.

“I know.” She replied softly. There was no way to get out of this without hurting his pride. The words, they couldn’t be taken back. She hadn’t known the extent of those words when she had said them, so she could use that as an excuse. But she didn’t. She knew she couldn’t.

Kouga had expected her to revoke the words after she learned what they had meant. Her “I know” was completely unexpected. He closed the distance between them with a single jump when her knees buckled and swung her up in his arms, cradling her against his chest. Her heart was beating way too fast. He could feel the heat radiating from her side and cursed. “I knew we shouldn’t have taken you out.” He turned; her cradled in his arms and started back in the direction of the cave.

They both knew it wasn’t finished.

Mai glanced from one of the Elders and then to Kouga. “Why was Kumiko acting like that? That was rude and uncalled for…” Kouga tried to smile. “Some men are idiots.” Myself in included, he added silently. Hakku started to bring things back in order since he was otherwise occupied.

“You know this isn’t over.” Kouga whispered against Kagome’s ear when they were out of hearing. “And I’m not talking about us.” They both knew Kumiko would be back. When or how, they didn’t know. His pride was too wounded, his anger brought to the surface. Jealousy could turn a man into something ugly. Kouga didn’t want to think about that right now. Kagome was more or less his mate and not just in words. He wanted to mark her. Give her his mark so everyone would know she was his. Her body might be his but she had yet to give her mind and soul to him. She hadn’t known what she was saying when she said those words. The doubt was there.

That doubt, he was going to vanquish.

He glanced down at her. She was a light weight in his arms. His eyes were drawn to the smooth skin of her neck, the slender length. He could mark her right there, so all would see. Hell, his scent was already on her. That alone would be enough to warn others away. He took a deep, calming breath. Not yet. His arms tightened around her a fraction when he felt her settle deeper into the comfort of his arms.

“I know what I said.” Her voice was low, as if she were weak. “I didn’t mean for it to come out like it did. You know that.” She paused. “But I can’t deny the attraction between us.” And he didn’t even try. “Just…” She glanced up at him and slid her arms around his neck as he ducked into the shelter of the cave. “…just give me time, ok?” She tried to smile but it came out weak and lopsided. “At least you know I’m on your side.” She knew he wouldn’t force her to become his mate but he wouldn’t go easy on her either. She sighed and closed her eyes as he sat her down on the pallet. She fell back willingly, her eyes heavy. “I just want to sleep.” She murmured.

He watched her throughout the day, leaving only when necessary. Mai came in to join him a few times. Only when it was dark did Kouga settle down and shed his clothing, except for a pair of tight fitting skin hide that hugged his lower body. He slid beneath the furs and pulled her against him, settling her back against his chest. Her breathing was even, signaling she was asleep. He slid his arms around her slender body and clenched his teeth against the delicious torture of her body against his own, the sweet swell of her hips settling against his groin. He felt his body stir, growing hot and hard. Shit. He was not going to take her again. Not yet. She needed time to think and heal—fully. He closed his eyes and willed his body to sleep. It was a good few hours before sleep finally came.

He just didn’t realize how right he was about Kumiko.

“Fuck.” Kumiko hissed, dirt and rocks flying as he ran alongside the deserted road. He was in a rage. He was humiliated beyond reason. The urge to kill Kouga was strong. Strong enough to make him do it. He was going to kick Kouga’s ass and then kill him. Kouga had made a fool of him and Kagome had helped him. So now he wasn’t good enough for her? Everything had been fine until Kouga came back.

He stopped, panting as he reached out and punched a tree in outrage. The tree shook, his fist buried in the bark. He growled. Like hell this was over. He could already imagine it. Damn Kouga and damn Kagome. Thoughts filtered through his mind. Of kagome’s body beneath his, writhing as he thrust into her—

“You just wait.” He whispered, the look in his eyes dark. No one made a fool of him.
