Chapter 3: The Jewel. Part 1.

‘How did it get there?’
‘Who would do this?
‘Why is it in him?’
‘Why……..?’

All these questions kept swimming around her head but were silenced when a muffled groan left his lips as he tried to back away instinctively from the source of the pain. Kagome realized what he was doing and looked down to discover the source of his pain was her hand that had found its way to his wound and without her even registering it, the call of the jewel had reached out to her, reeling her in, wanting to be purified. She was prying into the raw flesh of the gaping hole in his chest in an attempt to reach the slightly glowing crystal. She immediately stopped and looked away in shame at being the cause of more pain to her beloved Hanyou. At this point in time he was the only person in the world that mattered to her.

Tears of shame and guilt filled her already drowning eyes as she was drawn to him once more. He motioned to sit up and she grabbed his arm and positioned him against the half wall beneath her window.

With a small grunt from the unwanted movements that brought about a fresh flow of blood, he opened his eyes as he clutched his stomach. His vision cleared in the still dark room with only her light from her computer illumination the small area. She came into view, the blue light giving an ethereal glow to her already trembling form. He groaned again as he watched the decision form on her face, going from the uncertainty that he knew all to well to a determination that even his older idiot of a half brother would have a hard time matching. This flung his mind into a memory that he had buried deep in the corridors of his mind, numbed by all the pain that he had been through, it surfaced:

*********FLASHBACK*****************

The Inu-tachi were all parked around the campfire, all in their usual positions. Sango, crouched low leaning against a rock with her Boomerang within reach should a Youkai decide to cut short their evening of rest. Miroku sat, leaning against a tree, head bowed down, eyes closed, deep in thought. His staff resting against his shoulder as he cradled it to his chest.

Kagome had set up her sleeping bag and had positioned herself above it, cross-legged as the kitsune pup, Shippo curled himself in her lap and dozed slightly, taking full advantage of the uneasy peace that they had.

Inuyasha had positioned himself in the nearest tree taking it, once again, upon himself to keep watch as the group slept. His father’s fang, the Tetsuiga, cradled to his chest as its aura engulfed him, calming his demon blood and comforting him.

Kagome’s gaze was fixated on the dying fire. A deep feeling of dread filled the air and brought about an unnerving tension between the members of the group. They were all on edge, each one never admitting to building feeling that oozed out of their forms and penetrated the surrounding area.

All deep in thought as to try and figure out what exactly it could be that brought about this deep anxiety in everyone. The silence was eating at Kagome and it would be her that broke the silence and gave the group the relief they knew followed her words of wisdom.

Still staring into the fire, she broke the silence; in a silent whisper she uttered the words, more to herself than anyone else. Words that they had all been feeling but where too sacred to say, least it be true, saying it would make it all that more real.

“It’s going to happen……..he………..he would make sure that it does………..”

Her broken whisper caught everyone’s attention and all eyes were fixed on her, first in confusion and then in realization as her words filled the air.

Startled out of her thoughts, her gaze shifted to the temperamental hanyou who had now jumped down and sat himself next to her, a scowl adorned his face.

“What do you mean”it’s going to happen? Hummm?”

“You know very well what I am talking about, Inuyasha.”

“You don’t know shit Kagome, there is no way that he could have built up that much power in that short of a time to ever even consider doing that. Besides… he wouldn’t be that stupid to pull a move that could kill us all.”

At that he leaned back against the trunk of the tree, arms crossed, convinced that they would go back to being silent.

Kagome, tears brimming her eyes as her emotions came into play again, causing her voice to break as spoke her heart.

“You Know, Inuyasha, just as I do that………that…………… It doesn’t matter, its going to happen and……….and…………I don’t know how but if we don’t………..even death may be the price to pay to set right what…..what…..I need to reverse my mistake.” Conviction filled her voice as the guilt and sorrow she felt echoed in everyone’s heart.

“ Keh, stupid you don’t have to I do.”

“ No you don’t, this is my burden and…….”

“KAGOME! Please don’t… just don’t not now….”

“If not now then when??? When Inuyasha is the right time?????? I can’t do this……. I can’t do this I can’t…….not anymore……”
With that the tears streamed down her face, she got up, the slumbering kit fell from her lap in a heap as her legs carried her away from the tension, away from her friends away from the light, away from her burden.

All Inuyasha saw was her retreating form…..the kimono sleeves she was wearing billowing behind her as she ran, away from him. Why did he burden her…... didn’t she realize that he was to blame just as much as she was?

He watched her form disappear and turned his gaze onto the surrounding darkness, looking straight at him, yet unaware of his very existence.

Deep crimson eyes watched her retreating form as she left the safety of the small group, red eyes that held all the secrets to the future and knowledge to the past. He felt the gaze of the Hanyou Inuyasha penetrating his shield, he was staring straight through him, his barrier was working, and with a evil smirk, he left the weary travelers to return to his master and father.

*************END FLASHBACK******************

Inuyasha was brought out of his thoughts as a salted tear hit his clenched fist, the salty water, pure, so pure it could only come from one person…Kagome. As he watched her his words rang though his mind:

“There is no way that he could have built up that much power in that short of a time to ever even consider doing that. Besides… he wouldn’t be that stupid to pull a move that could kill us all.”

How wrong he had been………..

Her uncertainty over came her, blinding her for a moment like it had done so many times before. It has to be the Shikon no Tama. Whether it was complete or not, she was unsure but she could feel the pull it had on her soul. As guardian of this jewel of power it was her duty, to see to it that it was safely kept, that it did not fall into others possession where the power could be manipulated and abused.

Driven by this duty, she could now feel the pull of the jewel, like a child’s cry for its mother’s calming touch; the jewel could sense its protector near and called out to be purified. She new she had to get the jewel out of him, but she didn’t want to cause him such unbelievable pain she knew he would suffer through, with the combination of her natural purification powers and the jewels awesome force. The thought lingered for a moment before she chose, convincing herself, she whispered under her breath:

“It has to come out.”

Inuyasha’s ears twitched at the sound of her voice, registering what she said. Now in pain, he found himself staring at the girl that had escaped so many tortures, looked death in the face and still managed to keep her reassuring smile on her face. Their eyes met as she glanced up to gage his reaction to her decision. She felt herself drawn in to the world of amber fire, his world, the one he portrayed with his eyes. Here she saw him, his life, his soul, she saw all of him and he the same with her. Together they new what needed to be done. Together, they braced themselves for her choice. And with her decision made, he gave the smallest of nods for her to continue before he shut his eyes and braced himself.

Kagome’s hand moved slowly towards his wound, blood still oozing out with his strained breaths. She caressed the flesh. His breath caught in his throat at the sudden tingle her butterfly-like touch left. His eyes flew open and fell in sync with hers. Gently, gently, she made her way, easing her hand downwards, letting him get use to the added pressure on the raw, tainted skin.

With their eyes still locked in the now unbreakable gaze. They formed some kind of bond, uncertain as to how exactly they began to speak volumes to one another, without uttering a word, in a language that they had never been taught. Both of them were fluent in the tongue

Time stood still, the only thing moving, barely noticeable was her hand. Deepening itself into the wound where the Shikon jewel pulsated and responded to her miko powers.

Suddenly, his eyes dilated and panic reined supreme in his mind. She read his eyes and tried to fathom what exactly was going on…… then she felt it. The wound contorted against the 2 fingers she had managed to ease in. She startled when a strong, rough hand engulfed her petite wrist, stopping her from moving.

Her eyes darted downwards, breaking the bond. She saw his hand wrapped around her wrist, preventing her from moving; she glanced back to his face to see that red had engulfed his irises and the blue faint strips took shadow over his cheeks.

Her body started to panic as her mind registered what his crimson stare meant. Her senses heightened and her accelerated heartbeat drummed in her ears. With the combination of adrenaline and lack of sleep, not to mention an enraged demon sitting in front of her, in that moment something took control over her, his whole body seemed to be mapped out in her minds eye, his crimson stare never leaving her form as the pain that bellowed out of them reached her more rational side.

She could taste his sweat on her tong, mixed in with her own dry mouth, she could smell the steel blood, but there was something else, something she couldn’t quite place, something small but consistent. Then she realized it, the same thing that permeated her aura on the battle field, the same feeling she would get at the mention of another’s name………….. fear.

‘He was scared. Unbelievable, inconceivable? Inuyasha sacred? Why would her fear me? No, it’s not me, it can’t be, then what? Wait……. How only gets like this when he fears for his life. But why??’

As if sensing her realization, a deep growl formed in his chest and left his lips. A warning growl, a threat, the only kind he was capable of making when his life was at steak.

The grip on her wrist tightened, cutting off the blood flow to her hand, suffocating the capillaries and brining about a strange sensation of pins and needles.
She was becoming desperate; she needed to get the tainted jewel out of him. With this in mind she found herself inching closer to him.

Another warning growl was released. She paused a few inches away from his face. The mind numbing stare had resumed. The bond had reformed in a clash of stormy grey and crimson red. He was the only once communicating though; she was acting out her feelings. He was speaking, she was moving……..
‘Pain’

Her hand rested on his chest.

‘Blood’

Her breath hitched in her throat.

‘Poisoned blood=pain’

In her mind all she could feel was pain, if it was hers or the blood soaked Hanyou was unknown to her, all she knew in looking into his eyes, she needed to get the jewel.

She could feel his hot breath washing over her face, she was so close to him that she could make out the faint scare she had left him with when they first met.

His grip still constricting her wrist as their eyes still kept in the suspended moment. Her heartbeat took on a rhythm of its own and she wasn’t sure if it could go any faster. The sound filled Inuyasha’s ears, and indeed accelerating his own beating heart.

Kagome could feel the pulsating shard, evil that tainted it, threatening to engulf its host.

It had to come out now!

She felt a force over take her own will as she moved, fast, hard, determined.

She closed the small gap between them. Surprise filled his eyes before her lips engulfed his. Pressing hard against the swollen skin, in the same forward motion, she drove her hand into the wound and reached for the jewel, desperation now fueling her.

Distracted by the sudden claim of his lips, he didn’t even feel her hand in the wound, retrieving the shard and purifying it on contact. To busy with the chaste kiss and the emotions behind it, he could feel his human side stir.

`Hey………wake up you dummy……… Hurry up…………if you die now at least you gonna go in the arms of the one you love………………….Kagome.’

It seemed to work, in the same chaste kiss, he returned and in the same moment he kissed her back with more force, mimicking her small act of desperation.

After the initial shock he felt of the sudden burst of emotion conveyed in the motion, he began to respond, lips still pressed together, the real Inuyasha was back, returned full force. He needed to get it out there, the fact that he was there with her, all the pent up emotion that he had all the shame, guilt for sending her away when he knew she did it of her own accord, the fear of loosing her, of never having her in his arms again. He wanted her to feel how much he needed her

With this circling his mind and the adrenalin pumping through him, he began to gently take her lower lip in to his mouth and gently he began to suck on it. She parted her lips nervously, unsure of what exactly to do, uncertain as to why, slowly he edged his tongue into her mouth. Savoring her taste, saltedly sweet. He could feel her lower lip trembling. A small whimper left his lips as he was brought out of his emotional flight with her hand still deep in the wound.

Kagome’s eyes flew open and out of her desperation not to cause him pain, she accepted his open mouth and used her tongue to try and coax his back into action in an attempt to distract him once again.

He accepted, forgetting about his pain, he delve into her mouth, their tongues danced in a sensation of touch accompanied by his soft groans of pleasurable pain and acceptance.

Kagome’s eyes slid closed once more as she felt him take to her kiss. She had removed her hand, the jewel along with it, and in sheer relief, two tears slid down her face as her eyes closed and she gave into the passion.

A/N: Let me know what you think…………..

Until next time……………
