Reveling in the Past:

Her emotions brewing a wild storm of anxiety and fear as she questioned the fate of her beloved friends:

“Inuy…Inuyasha…what….how…please, please tell me what…happened?” Her voice broke with the strain of her emotions.

Her eyes bore into his, her wild storm of emotions dripping from her form and permeating her aura that encircled her.

He looked deep into her eyes, inside, still battling with himself on the idea if he should tell her. Inside he was drowning with all the memories that surfaced as he gazed at her pure form, trembling in anxious anticipation…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It was before it all happened. Before he was a constant threat, before their lives depended on their next move. Before…

The night was warm and held promise. The fireflies danced about the trees, creating the illusion of the forest alive in a waltz with nature as a magical mist adorned the air. They were all situated around the campfire in their usual positions; all smiling and laughter could be heard throughout the small clearing as they basked in their recent victory over a scorpion demon who figured that it was mighty enough with its jewel shard to take on the Inu-tachi.

They fought hard, and it looked like the scorpion youkai was the victor until it found itself water bound, Sango let loose her Boomerang, injuring its front legs. The stinging tail of the youkai whipped about the 3 that sat upon the fire Neko, Kilala. Knocking the monk, Miroku and Kagome to the ground, Inuyasha jumped just in time to soften her fall where he cast her behind him and drew Tetsusaiga, letting loose the Wind Scare that sealed the Scorpions fate.

Now in the clearing, bellies full of the poor boar that roasted upon the fire; they gazed up at the stars, talking about dreams and the stuff that made them real. Kagome pointed out a few constellations that she was aware of from her studies at school. Shippo taking a keen interest in the constellation Orion proceeded to nag the story out of Kagome.

As she was about to begin, a chill swept through the clearing, disturbing the group of their chit-chat. Sango reached for her Boomerang, Miroku clutched his staff a bit closer to his body while his grip tightened as he waited for the source of the bad omen. Shippo sought solace in Kagome’s arms as Inuyasha clutched the hilt of Tetsusaiga in a crouched position, readying himself for the inevitable. But it never came.

The group relaxed, but not completely, the conversation continued yet a weary eye was kept upon the darkness beyond the firelight of the camp. Kagome began her story about the constellation as the group listened to how the stars came to appear like the Giant. In mid-sentence, a threesome of blue glowing, eel looking Youkai floated above the tree line, entering the clearing and dispersing to the wind an eerie high pitched noise that reached into the heart of every living creature. This sound could only come with the soul stealers they are.

Kagomes stomach did a summersault and landed hard on her bladder at the omen that these soul stealers brought with them…Kikyo.
Inuyasha gaze turned from the looming darkness of the dieing fire to the sky as he heard the cry of these monsters of the afterlife. His ears lay flat on his head and he confirmed Kagome’s fear as he whispered it to the now silent group.

“Kikyo…”

With that he took off. In a single bound he had cleared the tree line in the direction these vile creatures had come from.

Kagome cast her gaze away from the disappearing red figure as she felt tears burn her eyes as the threatened to spill, revealing to the group just how hurt she was. Shippo, still sitting in her lap, offered his condolences as he felt her aura change and scented the looming salt water. He placed a tiny paw on her face as he spoke his childish wisdom.

“Don’t pay any attention to Inuyasha, Kagome. He’s just so stupid because he doesn’t know that you know that he goes to her, but even thought he smells bad, he comes back smelling worse because dead earth and rotting bones doesn’t smell good at ALL.”

Kagome lifted her gaze, to take in the sight of the young fox kit as he tried to comfort her.

“And I should know. I’m a youkai. And Kagome you smell VERY nice… Like…like… well I don’t exactly know… sakura blossoms maybe… and a little of that sweet stuff you have on you hot cocomatlate thingy…but it’s nice…”

A smile graced her face as the tears fell, his innocence so pure and naive to the world around him…how could anyone be upset with a compliment like that. Despite Shippo’s heart felt opinion of the dead woman, Kagome still felt her heart break a little further.

This wasn’t the first time that he had gone off with her, the first time Kagome had caught them, she retreated back to her era, where she made the choice to come back and made a promise to Inuyasha that despite the pain it brings, she will keep.

‘I will stay with you no matter what…’, this in mind she sniffled and whipped her tears away as she shoved a smile on her face.

Sango sensing her depressed state and seeing the fake smile she had come accustomed to whenever she was upset yet never willing to show the world, moved to sit next to her. Wrapping her arms around her, she whispered into her ear:

Shippo’s right Kagome, Inuyasha is stupid and a fool for hurting you so.”

She removed her arms to look Kagome in the eye, she was such a friend to Sango, they were sisters, not bound by blood, but bound by something more powerful.

Kagome regarded Sango and gave a nod in understanding as her voice turned to dust in her throat and the tears resumed once more. Miroku, came over as well, placing a hand on her shoulder, he gave his thoughts on the whole situation too:

“Lady Kagome, we all feel your pain.”

Kagome saw the solace her friends offered her, each of them have been through enough heartache to comprehend hers, but was it the same?

“I feel like such a fool…” Her broken voice confiding in her ‘family’.

The monk tightened his grip on her shoulders as he responded to her comment:

“No, Lady Kagome, it is Inuyasha that is the fool, not you, for he cannot see the treasure he is pushing away, in the search for another that he could never have.”

Despite all the comforting, Kagome’s heart couldn’t take the pain, she needed some time, some place alone, quiet, no people to tell her how bad Inuyasha was, how it wasn’t her fault, how she should confront him…

“I…I…I think I need to take a walk…”

Kagome got up from her central position of comfort, the fox kit jumped onto the monk’s shoulders as they watched her walk solemnly away.

“Don’t go too far…” Sango’s voice echoed through the clearing after the sad image of a girl. The three sat in stunned silence as they contemplated how the evening of festivities could go from such happiness to a complete burden of sadness in the space of a few minuets.

“Do you think she will be alright, Miroku?”

Sango was the first to break the silence…

“I don’t know, Lady Sango, I don’t know is she will ever be alright…”

Miroku answered, deep in thought as Shippo piped up:

“Why doesn’t Inuyasha just mate Kagome…he dreams about her enough…”

Sango and Miroku stares at the kit in disbelief, surprise evident in both of their looks.

This was followed by a wild scream from the girl next to the monk.

SMACK!!!!!

The monk went down with a vicious

“HENTI!!!!!!!”

And Sango having the last word before fuming off to gather more wood for the now almost dead fire.

“You will never learn will you…Monk,…..Humph! Talk about the most inopportune time…”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Inuyasha heard the soul stealers again, this time there were more of them… He was close.

He came to a halt on the branch of a tree, ears swiveling every which way in search of noise as he sniffed the air for her scent. He caught onto it, the smell of earth and bones…”Kikyo…”

He uttered again, following the scent he found himself in the middle of a small clearing. A stream flowed thought, it would have been a beautiful sight with the running water bathed in the moon’s celestial light and the long grass dancing in the wind. Yes, it would have been beautiful, if it wasn’t for her.

Kikyo stood in the middle of the clearing, dressed in the traditional white and red of a miko. Her hair ballooning in the gentle breeze that swept through the clearing. Her gaze fixed upward towards the heavens. She had a deep look in her eyes, searching the sky as if it held the answers to all questions. He approached her form and she broke the silence of the clearing with her voice:

“Inuyasha…Once again you come…come to honor your promise or make new ones you can’t keep? Hmm?”

She questioned him with ice in her voice. He responded with the same ice and a bit of anger thrown in:

“You know why I have come, Kikyo.”

She tore her gaze from the stars and fixated her cold, lifeless eyes upon her former lover. A hint of a smile played across her porcelain pale face as her eyes took on a look of entire sorrow.

“Indeed Inuyasha. I know why you are here………but the question remains, are you a man of honor, will you honor your word or will you honor your heart?”

“Enough Kikyo, we have discussed this and I have still yet to make my choice, you know the promise I have mad and the pledge that I am bound by but….Naraku is our main priority now and you and I both know that it will be a useless attempt to bring him down on our own, only with our combined efforts will we reign supreme. So…”

A smirk now graced his face as sarcasm laced his voice:

“The question remains…are you still in? Will YOU honor YOUR word?”

Fully aware of his form, she stepped closer to her former love, she wrapped her arms around him as she whispered into his ear:

“Well Inuyasha…It all remains to be seen. Shall we let fate take its course or, once again, shall we intervene?”

She finished the sentence with a brash kiss to his temple.

“Enough!”

He stated, stepping out of her embrace, out of her reach.

“Has it been done?”

Her disgust obvious in the way she regained her composure from his sudden exit of her embrace. His formal question brought forth the anger and hate she captured in her heart. It echoed in her voice.

“Of course…….What Kind of a fool do you take me for Inuyasha?”

She turned away from him as she readjusted her kimono. Inuyasha continued the conversation despite her body language.

“Right, so you shall be prepared by then? And he isn’t aware of any of it?

“Yes and Yes. I would not be the person I was if I could not pull a mere thing like that off.”

“Indeed.”

“Well it was enough to fool you wasn’t it? Inuyasha?”

“Feh. That was a long time ago… Right I shall see you when it takes place.”

With that he headed off in the direction he had come. Crouched, he left her with words that would still question him and his heart.

“I do trust you…Kikyo…its just…she’s -”

She cut him off:

“Inuyasha, don’t be late.”

With this, he bound off, back to the group, back to her.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Alone, lost in her own thoughts, Kagome was paying no attention to where she was going. She tripped on a fallen tree root a while back and somehow twisted her ankle. She just ‘Humphed’ and pulled herself to her feet after inspecting the damage. She could still walk, a little bit of a limp in her step now with the added pressure of her shoe pushing on the sensitive point on her upper heel.

She continued to walk as her mind ran circles around her, her aura flaring, sorrow and pain could be felt for miles.

‘Why do I do this to myself? I should just confront him? No, I know why he goes to see her but…But it still hurts…”

Tears hadn’t ceased. They ran down her face, threatening never to end.

‘I can’t believe that I’m still doing this to myself…Stupid promises…but I made it, its my fault….ooooeeeeee WHY…WHY…WHY? Why do I love him so much…’

She felt the tears hit her jumper and soak into the material. She wiped them away.

“Ugh, I must look like a freak…at least I’m not sobbing anymore…”

She took in her surroundings and spotted a stream on the far side of the small hill she had climbed. She descended the hill and made her way to the stream, talking to herself with each step.

“Okay…enough…this has to be the last, the last…well I know it wont be THE last but…UGH what’s the point. You NEED to get over this Kagome, Inuyasha has chosen Kikyo, not you so you need to just get over it…YES, okay…”

She reached the stream and knelt, splashing her face with water; she took in her distorted reflection.

“Yup, you look like a freak… Right done, decision made, you are official over him, NO more Inuyasha, NO more love, NO more…”
She smiled at herself, a fake cheesy smile that the cartoon characters at Disney World would have a hard time matching.

“Look at me; this is me getting over him…” She stated to her reflection.

Her pep talk was interrupted when the hair on her back raised and something in the back or her mind, like an alarm went off, her body was telling her to run, run because something was coming, something bad. She could feel as the adrenaline began pumping through her system.

Her heart took on a rhythm of its own as a voice, as slimy and dirty to the thing it belonged to, reached her ears.

“Hehe. What have we here? A human miko, all alone in the woods. Crying.”

Kagome’s fear spiked as another, huskier voice rang throughout the valley.

“YESSSSSS A human miko, crying, talking to herself. Do you think she is mad?”

Kagome turned to face her intruders; two pairs of crimson red eyes met hers. She scanned the rest of them as she heard her heart in her ears. Both some kind of mutated snake crossed with a human moved in towards Kagome, her miko senses on overdriveerher :

‘Yup their definitely youkai…ugly as youkai…shit, now what…?’

They closed in on her, intent on cornering her against a tree.

She took in their scaly webbed hands as they moved about their bodies of their won will. Their green slimy skin, covering very taunt muscles suggested to Kagomes logical side that fighting them in hand to hand combat was not an option, but if desperate enough, she would give it a try.

‘The only way to get out of this one, Kagome is to use me, you brain.’ Kagomes mind deduced.

At the intake of the second Youkai’s odd question, her anger sparked and she retaliated without thinking.

“ME MAD? Wohoow WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? You stupid slimy excuse for a person……….”

At this the youkai closed in on her. Both smirking at her with a gleam in their eyes that only promised death.

They taunted her, playing with their prey before they destroy it.

“She has quite a mouth on her. Wouldn’t you agree brother?”

“Indeed she does Brother…..we shall have to rectify that, shall I rip out the tongue and you take the throat or shall I tear the throat and you have the tongue?”

“Whatever you desire brother, as long as I get half of those jewel shards she’s carrying…….”

Enough said, Kagome’s mind went into over drive:

“HELLO I told you to use me, anyhoo well now we have to get you out of this pickle…They want the jewel shards, maybe you could use it as a bargaining chip? YES………”

Kagome put all her acting skills together as she tried to bargain with the two approaching demons.

“Hey guys, Okay, you want the jewel shards, fine, but do you really want me? Come on I’m just some useless human…How about I just give them to you and you guys leave me alone? What you say?”

“Hummmm, tempting human…But you see, my brother and I haven’t eaten in over a lunar cycle…so…NO!”

With that they both lunged at Kagome, she ducked the first one, yet collided with the second, the demons hand made contact with her chest as the hand slid and closed around her shoulder in the motion. The hand ripped her cloth as the claws dug into her skin, leaving 3 deep welts that began to sting incomprehensively, as the blood began to flow.

The first demon whorled around and began the attack again. Kagome caught sight of this and began to take off, running in the opposite direction of the demons, her swollen ankle forgotten while her mind chastised her cowardice.

‘Wohoo what a hero…at least you are alive, like I said, when in doubt…RUN!’

She ran, her lungs burnt from the effort it took to breathe, giving her blood the oxygen it needed to circulate her body and move her muscles. Her legs were aching as she ran, bushes and sticks clawed at her legs and feet, yet she was oblivious to this, oblivious to the pain.

She ran as hard and as far as she could but the demons, being what they are and of obvious superior strength, they caught up to her.

“Damn insufferable wench… come here so we can kill you…”

They were on her heels; a slimy greasy hand reached out and caught her flowing hair that billowed behind her. The youkai gave a fierce tug on it and Kagome came clashing backwards. She let out a heart stopping scream form the bottom of her chest as she fell.

Then before she was aware of it, the demon was atop of her, ripping her clothes, soon she was in her bra with the Youkai seated on her hips, the other youkai waiting in anticipation.

She tried her best, fought with all her might as she tried to rid her body of the youkai that sat atop her. Her efforts were in vain and it only lead to him clawing at her body, ridding her of all her clothing altogether as she cried and pleaded for them to stop.

“NO…PLEASE NO…STOP!”

Tears staining her cheeks as the other youkai’s voice overpowered her cries for help.

“No, you filthy human whore, for your running and making this difficult for us, we shall be delighted in using you for our much deserved pleasure.”

“OOOOEEEEE brother, I want to be the one in her first, STOP MOVING BITCH!”

Her cries continued despite their announcement.

“NO STOP PLEASE… INUYASHA!!!!!!”

The Youkai atop her continued her abusing. The next moment Youkai were startled by the sound of a very pissed off Hanyou…

Inuyasha burst through the clearing, Tetsusaiga drawn, transformed into the fang as it pulsated with the rage that coursed though the Hanyou.

The Monk and the Demon slayer hot on the hanyou’s heels, Miroku, staff in had entered the valley with the demon slayer ready with the Boomerang hitched on her shoulder.

“GET AWAY FROM HER YOU FILTHY SLIM……………”

Inuyasha roared. He descended on the demon atop Kagome, and with a swift blow of the sword, he sliced the demon in half, blood sprayed from his broken form, covering Kagome in his entrails.

Sango released her boomerang and ended the other youkai’s life before he even had the chance to retaliate to his brother’s demise.

With a deafening scream, both youkai met their fate, Kagome on the ground, almost naked. Her breath erratic as her cries for help continued. Inuyasha sheathed his sword and knelt down next to Kagome. Inuyasha cradled her form to his chest with her still thrashing about in blind panic. She continued to fight until her frozen mind grasped Inuyasha voice as he whispered to her shaking body.

“Kagome, shhhhhh its me, calm down they aren’t gonna hurt you any more…shhhhhhh its okay…Kagome.”

She stilled her arms as her cries subsided and she voiced in a shaky breath her question.

“NO…STOP…Inuyasha?”

She looked up at him through tear flooded eyes and the realization hit her.

“Yes Kagome…its me.”

“OH Inuyas……sha…I…I…”

She launched herself into him, wrapping her arms around him as she began to sob. He clung to her, pressing her form against his body, anger he had at her for running away was quickly replaced with guilt.

‘I didn’t protect her, I couldn’t protect her.’

He did all he could at that moment, rubbing her back and rocking gently, he whispered his comfort to her, while the Sango and Miroku looked on.

Tears welled up in Sango’s eyes as she saw her sister almost rapped, lying in the dirt, sobbing her heart out. Miroku wrapped an arm around her as they listened to Inuyasha try to ease Kagome’s pain.

“Shhhhhh, Kagome it’s alright, I’m here, its okay……..shhhhhhh.”

Once her sobs died down to mere hiccups, he removed his fire-rat haori and covered her shaking form, then scooped her up in his arms and made his was back to their camp.

Once there, he cleaned the dirt and grime from her body and tented to her wounds. Not allowing any of the others to come near Kagomes shaking form, despite their protests and pleas to help her. He cradled her to his chest once again and let off warning growls to the group if they came too near.

Still shaking Kagome allowed his ministrations over her without uttering a word, merely allowing a sob, now and then to escape her lips. She lent into the warmth of Inuyasha’s embrace as he cradled her to his chest, she moved her hand to fist his under kimono, in a death grip, she buried her head into his chest and let the silent tears fall.

There in the dim light of the camp fire, Kagome dozed off in Inuyasha’s arms, his grip tightening on her as he heard her breath eventually even out and her heart beat slow. The group soon followed Kagome’s example and in their sorrow, they slept.

Inuyasha, the only one awake, clutched Kagome tighter to his chest as he spoke to her.

“My Kagome…I’m so, so sorry…I didn’t protect you like I said I would. I’m sorry Kagome… I won’t let anybody hurt you like that again…I promise I will never leave you Kagome, As long as there is breath in my body, I promise that I will be with you and protect you.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A few days later, the group find themselves heading back to the village, their base camp. They intend to restock and rest for a short while, while Kagome goes back to her time and gathers her stuff needed for their next escapade.

The sun smiled high in the sky, bathing the countryside in its warm glow, the birds sang their summer songs to nature and the breeze pollinated the surrounding fields with colourful flowers.

The Inu-tachi were trekking back towards the village, Inuyasha in the lead, as always, Sango and Kagome chatting in the middle while the monk brought up the rear with Shippo who hitched a ride on his shoulders. The two girl chatting about their long awaited bath as Shippo took in the surrounding scenery and Miroku taking in a different type of scenery, his eyes following the swish, swish of every step a certain miko and demon slayer took in front of him. Shippo spotted this, yet thought again about voicing this to the two girls in front and settled for a sigh and a shake of the head.

All of a sudden Kagome froze, mid-step, as all the hairs on her body stood on end and a familiar sensation reached her brain, tickling her nerve endings.
“Jewel shards.”

She uttered. In the next instant a whirlwind of dust appeared along the countryside, whipping up the flowers and small bushes that lay in its path.

“Kouga.”

Inuyasha groaned and shook his head at the approaching wolf demon.
