Even the stars seemed to have lost their shine. It was as though they sensed his somber mood, and glowed in the sky without their usual majestic twinkle. Inuyasha sighed and turned his gaze away from the sky. The cool breeze of the dropping temperatures tousled his hair, fanning it out behind him. He looked down and frowned at the white linen sling that cradled his left arm. Inuyasha snorted at the sight. It hurt like hell when he first broke it, but the arm had healed within a few days…when he still had his youki to aid in the process.
He felt fine, but continued to “rest” his arm for Kagome's peace of mind. She insisted he take it easy and not strain himself. `Keh. Wench thinks I'm a weakling or something…' His grumpy thoughts dissipated when another part of his conscience reminded him that she was just protecting him in her own way. A small smile pulled at his lips. At least she was dotting on him like she used to, before the kids snatched all the attention away from him. Not that he minded, but all the same, it was nice to be the object of her undivided attention again.

Inuyasha rested more of his weight against the window in his bedroom. He crossed his arms over his chest and allowed his eyes to wander into the dark night of the forest surrounding them. The trees off in the distance blurred into a line of never-ending dark shadows, and offered a sense of seclusion from the outside world. Inuyasha leaned out of the window slightly, closed his eyes, and inhaled deeply. A heavy weight settled once again on his chest when his nose picked up on nothing but the light smell of cherry blossoms in the air. A frustrated growl rose in his throat, clenching the muscles in his neck. He'd give anything to have his sense of smell back. Without it, it felt like he lost a part of his identity, lost a part of himself. It made him feel insecure and vulnerable, and he hated it. For the past week, ever since the battle with Leiko, Inuyasha lost his heightened hanyou sense of smell. It was reduced to that of his human nights. He felt blinded, robbed, and although he would sooner chew off his own arm than admit it, he felt afraid. How could he protect his family if he couldn't sense the danger before it showed up?

Inuyasha pounded his fist on the wooden sill in a fit of frustration. He hated having a sense of smell like a human. It was pathetic and made him feel inadequate. Kagome's scent was faint in his nose, even though he inhaled as if it was his life source. He fought the urge to tear apart room in an attempt to relieve his irritation. Kyo and Saaya's pitter-patter of feet were muffled and quiet in his ears. He couldn't smell, he couldn't see, and he couldn't hear. `I feel like a fucking weak human!' His fist met the frame of the window once more, jostling some of his hair over his shoulder. His eyes caught sight of the midnight hued strands resting against his bright red firerat. The contrast was not unfamiliar, but most unwelcome. Inuyasha closed his violet eyes, trying to block out the utter devastation. He slowly brought his right hand to his face, and opened his troubled eyes to examine the blunt nails that had replaced his once sharp and powerful claws. With a sarcastic smile, Inuyasha whispered to himself,

“I guess I am…”

His despondent gaze lingered on his human features. With a long heavy sigh, he looked back out the window into the blanketed night. Everything looked the same, but at the same time, nothing felt alive. The colors were no longer sharp, the sounds no longer audible, and most bleak of all, the smells were no longer distinct. Every smell merged together to one light, indistinguishable scent. He hated it.

~*~*~*~*~*~flashback~*~*~*~*~*~

Kirara softly landed beside the front door with a quiet purr. Kagome carefully climbed down, supporting the lax form of her mate. Sango and Miroku ran quickly, their feet pounding against the leaf-strewn ground. Miroku dashed forward to help Kagome and pulled the semi-conscious body of his best friend into his arms. Inuyasha grunted in pain and prompted a terrified cry from Kagome,

“Miroku! Please,” she pleaded in a choked whisper, “be careful…”

Miroku winced and nodded. He wheezed and lifted Inuyasha onto his back, slinging the heavy arms over his shoulders. The unconventional monk hooked Inuyasha's legs over his elbows and steadily walked inside the house. The hanyou began to mumble lightly, blurring his words into incomprehensible nonsense. Kagome followed directly after him, soothing her hand over Inuyasha's cold arm. Sango pulled the small kitten form of Kirara onto her shoulder and followed in the rear, closing the front door as she went.

Miroku slowly deposited Inuyasha on his bed with Kagome's help. They rolled the hanyou onto his stomach and gingerly positioned his broken left arm. Miroku stepped away and allowed Kagome full access to her injured mate. Sango went to stand beside Miroku and wrapped her arms around his waist, one hand still clutching the blood soiled garments of their closest friend. Miroku put an arm over his wife's shoulders and tugged her closer, needing to feel her presence. The two watched as Kagome broken-heartedly reassured her other half.

Kagome pushed his silvery hair to the side and exposed his gruesomely maimed back. Sango was unable to hold in her quiet gasp of horror at the sight of Inuyasha's injuries. Long, thick lashes raced across his back and glowed a furious red. Blood mixed with dirt to create a thick slurry that dirtied his skin and stung his cuts. Nearly twenty whip marks criss-crossed down from his shoulder blades to his lower back. The most severe of his injuries lied on the middle of his back, the lacerations almost melting into one, huge wound. The blood continued to slowly seep from the center of the gigantic messy X.

Kagome tried to stop the shaking in her hands and the tears obscuring her vision without success. She fell to knees beside the bed and caressed his face. It felt hot to the touch, a sharp contrast to the cold clammy feeling of his hands. She ran her fingers along his side, brushing some of the dirt away from his wounds. She should have been used to this, the gory reality of their lives. But it had been so long since Inuyasha had been injured to this extent, so long since Kagome had to sit by and watch, unable to do anything but the superficial healing that only eased her own mind. What made it all the more painful was how clearly evident it was that Inuyasha had been terrified. She could only imagine what it must have felt like to believe that her most cherished person was no longer among the living. She hated that he always suffered for her, because of her. But it made her love her baka hanyou all the more. Kagome leaned forward and rested her head against the pillow beside Inuyasha's. She bit her lip to hold in her sob and ran his bangs through her fingers.

“You'll be okay Inuyasha, I'll make sure of it…”

Inuyasha's eyelids quivered as he tried to summon the energy to pull them apart. He felt groggy and lethargic. He could register the stinging on his back as someone softly ran a cloth along his lashes, cleaning the debris from the wounds. His head pounded as his brain tried to escape from his skull. He felt hot and cold all over, and his left arm hurt like a bitch. Inuyasha could hear Kagome's suppressed whimpers behind him as a cool gel was spread onto his back. It stung, and he yelped, bringing an onslaught of apologies from his mate. He opened his eyes a fraction of an inch, exposing the dull honey behind the thick lashes.

Inuyasha could see Miroku knelt down beside him, and the monk cracked him a forced grin. He lifted his eyes a little higher and saw Sango rush in with an armful of bandages that threatened to tumble over her arms. Miroku gave him an oddly sad wink and stood up to assist Sango. Everyone disappeared from his line of vision, so he closed his eyes once again. Inuyasha couldn't really understand why he couldn't locate Kagome's soothing scent. In fact, he couldn't smell anyone's scent. He groaned in distress, but was otherwise unable to voice his concerns. Kagome cooed him, brushed her hand across his cheek, and kissed him tenderly on the temple. Before he fell victim to the dark realms of his subconscious, Inuyasha vaguely heard the broken conversation between his mate and his best friends.

“Here are the bandages…” a female voice gently offered. `Sango?' Inuyasha wondered.

“Thank you…just put them on the bed…” `Kagome…' he instinctively knew, `thank god you're okay…'

“Do you need us to do anything?” Miroku asked.

“No…just…stay here with me for a while?” Kagome answered in a small voice.

“Of course, we wouldn't want to be anywhere else.” Sango promised.

“And don't worry about the kids,” Miroku added, “Shippou got them and they're all at Kaede's.”

“Thanks you guys…” Kagome turned and gave them a small smile. Sango and Miroku pulled her into a short hug before releasing her to resume to her vigilant duties.

It was silent for the moment as Kagome carefully bandaged Inuyasha's back with his occasional grunts of pain. He couldn't focus enough to form words, and didn't have the strength to turn his head. All he wanted was to embrace his mate and hold her until everything felt okay again.

~*~*~*~

Kagome spent the entire night cradling her unresponsive mate. When morning came, Sango fetched Kyo and Saaya before returning home and leaving the family of four alone. The two little hanyous couldn't really understand what was happening, but knew enough to know that they had to stay quiet and be good. Kagome held her two children in her arms throughout the day as Inuyasha rested, still not having come to full consciousness. It worried her, made Kyo whimper and Saaya cry. At night, the two huddled beside their daddy's head and slept beside him. Kagome sat beside the bed on a rocker, barely resting. When the demands of her body caught up, she dozed for no longer than a few minutes at a time, always stirring before her mind could fully relax.

On the second night Inuyasha woke up from his fuzzy and unpleasant sleep. The splint around his nearly fully healed wrist felt tight and left little room for movement. After a tearful reunion and many `kehs', Kagome agreed to remove the temporary cast with Inuyasha's promise of wearing a sling. The cuts on his back still pulled a little, but were on their way to recovery. Inuyasha held up a strong front for the sake of his children, and held them the best he could until they fell asleep in his arms. After Kagome moved them to their own beds, he let his true worries out.

Inuyasha shifted worriedly on the bed, squirming against the bandages wrapped around his torso. Kagome tiredly walked back into their bedroom and silently closed the door behind her. Inuyasha's ears perked up and he turned his head to lock eyes with his mate. Her eyes were red and puffy from days of uncontrolled tears. He grimaced at the sight. Kagome crawled onto the bed in front of him and fell into his arms. He embraced her tightly, pressing his cheek against hers. She pulled back after a few minutes and held Inuyasha's head in her hands. She bent forward and touched her nose to his and gave him a soft kiss. Kagome cautiously slipped in between Inuyasha's legs and rested her head against the crook of his neck. Inuyasha wrapped his right arm around her waist and tugged her closer.

“Are you feeling better?” she asked worriedly.

“Keh. I feel fine.” He lied. Kagome caught the insecurity in his voice and pushed,

“I know you're lying.”

“I'm not lying!” he growled defensively.

“Inuyasha…I know you're lying. What's wrong?”

Inuyasha sighed and pulled her closer yet. His brow pulled together in a frown as he tried to find the right words to voice his concerns. Truthfully, he wanted to tell her as soon as he woke up, but the kids were there and they didn't need to be worried anymore than they already were. In all honesty, his physical wounds were mostly healed and he felt fine. But…he still couldn't catch anyone's scent, and everything smelled empty. But before he found the right words, Kagome asked,

“Can you smell me?”

“What?”

“I-… That night that it happened,” she shivered and Inuyasha nuzzled her head, “You said you couldn't find my scent…that it was like you were human. I wanted to ask you before but…I didn't want to worry Kyo and Saaya. But…you can now, can't you? You never said anything…and I just hoped it was okay now…”

He paused before he answered. Inuyasha opened his mouth a few times, but a sound never came out. Finally, he decided on the honest, blunt truth.

“I can't.”

“You…can't?” she whispered.

“I-I don't know what's wrong. I just can't…my sense of smell is like how it is when I'm human.”

“Oh Inuyasha…”

“It's freaking me out Kagome…”

Inuyasha's tension was a palpable thing, coursing through the room. Kagome reached up to place a delicate kiss under his chin, and nuzzled his neck. Inuyasha relaxed, and his arm loosened to a less desperate hold.

“I think…” she started.

“Ne?” he prompted.

“I think… Well this sort of thing happens in my time. When someone gets a concussion they sometimes lose something. Like…memory, or sight, even feeling. Maybe…you bruised the part of your brain that controls scent…”

Bruised my brain?!” he asked in a horrified voice. Kagome sat up to reassure him.

“You hit your head, I heard it. It terrified me because it was so loud…and…” she sniffled and bit her cheek to hold the tears in check, “Maybe that's why you can't smell anything properly right now…”

“What the hell?! What am I supposed to DO Kagome?! I can't…can't lose my sense of smell! How am I supposed to protect you? And Kyo and Saaya! What the fuck…there has to be some way to-”

“It's probably temporary.” She soothed, her hand running over his panicked features. “It'll return, I'm sure. Especially since you're a hanyou. It'll be okay…it's only for now Inu-kun…I'm sure it is.” Kagome tried to sound more confident than she really felt.

Inuyasha had been beside himself with worry ever since he woke up, but suppressed the fear. With the damns open, his body nearly began to shake. He fisted his hand tightly and his eyes widened with fright. Kagome raised herself to her knees and placed kisses all over his paled face. She took his hands in her own and pressed them close to her heart.

“It'll be okay Inu-kun…It'll be okay…” she promised.

`HOW can this ever be okay?' his mind raced, `I hope to god you're right Kagome…I'll go mad if I can't smell your sweet scent…'

~*~*~*~*~*~end flashback~*~*~*~*~*~

Kyo snuggled closer to the warmth emanating from his father. Saaya glared at Kyo and kicked him for invading her side of their daddy. Kyo attempted to growl in his human body, but nothing more than a strange gurgle came forth. He settled for kicking her back. Inuyasha smiled at the two and pulled them apart. Standing up from the bed, Inuyasha cradled each life in one arm and swayed in the room, lulling them to sleep. Kyo rested his head on his daddy's chest and stuck his thumb in his mouth to suckle lightly. Inuyasha gave him a teasing grin, which prompted the small human boy to pull the thumb out with an embarrassed flush. Inuyasha leaned down and used his nose to nudge Kyo's hand back to his mouth and nodded his approval. Kyo popped the digit back inside and closed his violet eyes. `You're still my baby boy Kyo…'

Saaya fisted her fingers in her daddy's shirt and held fast. Inuyasha leaned down and kissed the top of her nose, to which her response was a happy laugh. He shushed her and kissed both her eyelids closed. Saaya blinked them back open, but took the hint and relaxed her grip. Inuyasha watched proudly as his daughter's blue-turned-violet eyes closed in anticipation for a peaceful slumber. The proud father rocked his babies to sleep with gentle swaying motions as he walked around his bedroom.

Saaya didn't look too different on her human night. Her hair remained the shiny black it always was, but her eyes shifted in color and her demonic traits disappeared. Gone were the furry black ears atop her head, and in its place, were cute little human ears. Her small claws retreated and the tiny little fangs in her mouth smoothed to dull human eyeteeth. Kyo's transformation was more noticeable. His silver hair bled black, and golden eyes turned violent, but he remained the miniature replica of his father turned human. Inuyasha's two blessings had their monthly transformation on the same night, both having been conceived on the full moon. Inuyasha couldn't help the goofy smile that pulled his lips tight as he watched his angels sleep. He had to be the luckiest father in the world to be the parent to the two lives he now held protectively in his arms. `Yeah,' he thought to himself, `The damn luckiest father.'

“You two are the best pups ever,” he whispered in their hair, “I wouldn't trade you for the world…no…you are my world.”

Saaya gurgled in her sleep in response. She kicked her foot, accidentally nudging against Kyo's. The sleeping boy retaliated with a kick of his own. Inuyasha watched amusedly as they continued to fight. Kick. Kick. Kick, kick. He chuckled and pulled them further apart.

“Don't wanna share your dad ne?” he asked to no one in particular. “Well I don't want to share you guys either…”

Kagome re-entered her bedroom to find her mate quietly rocking their children to sleep. One of the few truly happy smiles she'd had in the past week shone through, lighting up her eyes brighter than any of the stars could ever hope to match. She remained silent and watched from the doorway as Inuyasha swayed in a nurturing manner, easing their babies to dreamland. He kept his back turned to her, facing the window, yet no longer looking out of it. Kyo shifted in his arms and sneezed in his sleep. The little boy's nose wrinkled adorably and twitched like a hamster to dispel the lingering itch. Inuyasha couldn't resist and nipped his nose affectionately.

Inuyasha sighed contentedly and shifted them slightly to ease the tense muscles in his arms. Looking down, he realized just how much his pups had grown. It seemed like yesterday when he was still supporting their necks for them. Kyo had grown so much, and Saaya was quickly catching up. The two were balls of energy and even tuckered Inuyasha out. Even considering that, the blissfully happy father couldn't help but want another baby to flat out spoil within a few years.

“How likely do you think it is I'll be able to trick your mommy into baring me another pup?” he uncharacteristically cooed to the two, “She said she'd kill me if I got her pregnant when you were born Saaya…but I suppose she said that when we had you too Kyo.” The memory of their births came back to him, and he winced before adding, “Your mommy has a hell of a grip though…nearly broke my hand in two the last time.”

Kagome nearly broke out in a fit of giggles at his tone. She did threaten, no promised, to murder Inuyasha if he ever got her pregnant again. But then, some promises were meant to be broken. She rubbed her flat tummy as butterflies tumbled around. She wasn't sure, and it was too early to tell, but she had an inkling that Inuyasha might get his sought after baby sooner than he anticipated. Kagome hadn't realized it right away, but after being queasy for the past couple days, she managed to put two and two together. It hadn't dawned on her until the other day that they had mated on the night of the full moon. Normally Inuyasha was the first to know, with his keen sense of smell picking up on the shift in her scent. But with the whole incident… She would have told him right away, but with the stress of the last few days, she didn't want to add to the burden. Kagome smiled to herself. Maybe it would be more of a blessing than a burden to him. `He's going to lie in my lap and coo to my tummy like he did the other times…'

Inuyasha inhaled the soft scent of his children's hair as best he could. His black hued hair matched theirs, strand for strand.

“Blue to violet…” he mumbled to Saaya, “You have the prettiest eyes baby girl.”

“You said I had the prettiest eyes,” Kagome admonished in a hurt tone, “You just use that line on every girl don't you?” she teased.

Inuyasha didn't need his hanyou senses to know that Kagome had been approaching. He was in tune with her on a whole other level, far beyond physical senses. The hanyou turned and grinned at his mate, then pecked her on the cheek. She rolled her eyes at him playfully before pulling Saaya into her arms. The little girl gave out a sound of protest before snuggling into her mother's soft chest. Inuyasha kissed his daughter once more before Kagome left to put her to bed. The barely audible pitter-patter of their feet nearly frustrated him all over again. He hated these human senses.

Before long, Kagome re-appeared and reached for Kyo. The small boy latched on automatically and grinned in his sleep.

“Yes mommy, I want ramen for breakfast…” he burbled out loud.

Inuyasha smiled proudly with a look that said that's my boy, and ruffled his hair. Kagome cringed and let out a defeated sigh.

“Honestly Inuyasha, I don't think Kyo has any of me in him. You created this little boy all on your own and I had to push him out. Talk about crappy deal.” She playfully joked. Her gaze turned serious and she asked, “How are you feeling?” Inuyasha shifted on the spot and his expression saddened noticeably.

“I hate being human.” He said monotonously. Kagome smiled sympathetically.

“I know Inu-kun, but it's only temporary.” Her gaze lowered, and then snapped back up. “You took off your sling!” she accused. Inuyasha flushed.

“K-keh! I told you my arm is all better!” Kagome eyed him skeptically.

“Are you sure it's healed? Because you know what happens if-” Inuyasha cut her off with a kiss. He pulled back and grinned at his desired affect. Kagome remained mute for a few seconds, blinking away the small stars. She regained her composure and continued, “Fine. Let your arm heal all crooked just because you won't rest for a few more days you baka.” She glared. Inuyasha pecked on the lips once more.

“I swear it's already healed Kagome, its back to normal. I healed in the first few days; I've just been wearing that damn sling so you'd stop worrying! But I swear to you, my arm is healed.” After a pause Kagome asked again,

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“You really, really promise?”

“Why would I lie?!”

“Because you're a baka!”

“Don't call me a baka, wench!”

“You are a baka!” she fought, “But my baka.” Kagome smiled. Inuyasha growled in irritation but snuck his way behind her and nuzzled her neck anyways.

“And you're my wench.” He added.

“Hai, hai, you possessive baka.”

Possessive?! You're the one who-”

Kyo whined in Kagome's arms and silenced the two adults. Inuyasha leaned over Kagome's shoulder and kissed his son's forehead one last time. As he retreated he gave his mate a purposefully wet lick across her cheek. Inuyasha smirked at her scowl and gave her another lick on the neck for good measure. Kagome twisted her head to wipe the wetness from her cheek and neck on the cloth covering her shoulder. She turned, pulled herself to her full height on the tips of her toes, and blew a giant raspberry on her mate's cheek. Inuyasha stepped back a pace, appalled, with a grimace on his sharp features. The boy in her arms gave out another sound of protest and ended the silent game of I can be grosser than you. Kagome playfully shoved Inuyasha out of the way and headed down the hall to Kyo's room. She put him to bed and pulled the covers over her sleeping angel. Kagome turned to leave and heard him mumble before shouting out,

“Mommy!” he cried guilty, “Daddy said I could!” Kagome shook her head and closed the door behind her.

Kagome very carefully and silently entered her room, closing the door without a sound. Across the sleeping quarters was her brooding husband, staring out the window as if it would tell him the answers if he waited long enough. She knew he hated the new moon, and wanted it over with as quickly as possible. The loss of his sense of smell was hard enough for him, but to lose all his other senses as well… Kagome smiled mischievously. She knew how to make the night fly by, and to be honest, there were things she hardly ever got to do that were possible now.

Inuyasha sighed internally. He cursed his dark hair and flimsy nails, symbols of his weakness. Wasn't it enough that he couldn't smell oncoming danger anymore? Were the gods really so sadistic that they wanted to take away any power he had left? Granted, he begrudgingly admitted, this happened every month…but for once why couldn't he have skipped it?! Inuyasha managed to growl in his human form, having perfected it long ago. He heard Kagome enter the room, but he was sure she was trying to be quiet. Even without his super hearing he could sense her shuffling around. It went quiet for a moment and it peaked his curiosity.

“Inuyasha?” he finally heard her inquire.

“Yeah?”

“It's only been an hour since the sun set.”

“I know.”

“Glaring at the sky won't make morning come any faster.” She teased. His cheeks dusted with pink.

“Keh. I know that.”

“Why don't we do something else?” she suggested with a giggle.

“What do you-” he stopped mid-sentence when he turned to face her.

His throat mysteriously got very dry all of a sudden. Across the room, standing in the shadows by the bedroom door, was his mate, clad in nothing but creamy skin. Her kimono was pooled beside her feet, carelessly discarded to the wooden floor. Inuyasha breathed in deeply to dispel the sudden dizzy rush that resulted from the painfully quick relocation of blood in his body. Kagome giggled shyly and slowly sauntered forward with a grace only she could carry. Inuyasha's fingers twitched beside his legs, itching to reach out and grab her.

Kagome advanced forward at a frustratingly slow pace. Before she was even in snatching range, she wandered over to the dresser, all the while keeping her eyes demurely locked with the smoldering ones of her mate. She broke eye contact and exposed her back to him as she turned to dig through the draws. Inuyasha swallowed at the new view while his breathing increased just a little. Her body blocked his view of her hands, but he heard the snap of the closing drawer.

“What are you getting?” he asked huskily.

“You said your arm is okay right?”

“Wench,” he started, annoyed, “I swear to you its healed!”

“You better not be lying…”

“I'm not!”

“Because if you are-”

“I'm not lying!”

“-this is going to hurt.” She finished.

“Hurt?” he echoed.

Kagome turned around once more, revealing long, red, silk scarves in her hands. Her smile quirked coyly as she closed the distance between them. Inuyasha felt the tempo of his heart increase with each small step she took forward, towards him. Only inches away, Kagome pressed her nude body to Inuyasha's fully clothed one and looped her arms around his neck. Nudging his feet with her own, she slowly pushed him away from the window and towards the bed. She flashed him a roguish grin, leaning up closer, and closer to his waiting lips. The back of his knees met with the soft mattress and he fell backwards onto the bed with Kagome landing snugly on top of him.

She flashed him another playful smile before ruthlessly attacking his neck with her teeth. Inuyasha hissed and clasped her arms.

“B-but…it's the new moon Ka-ahh!” he tried to reason, unsure why he even was.

“Trust me Inu-kun…” she mumbled against his human ears, catching a lobe between her teeth and tugging.

“I-”, he inhaled sharply, “trust you…”
