Just Around the Corner

Chapter Two: Down Memory Lane

1 year later after the accident…

He didn't want to be here. He never wanted to set foot in this god forsaken town ever again. It had too many painful memories.

But here he was…moving into a nice Sears style house that used to belong to the Wolfman's. He'd heard about Ayame being killed by a reckless driver. Poor girl. From what he could remember from his earlier days, Ayame was always so optimistic and was never seen without a sweet innocent smile on her face no matter what emotion she felt.

But it didn't concern him and he didn't want to waste his time over something that he wasn't even there for. Shaking his head he continued to move boxes into the eerily empty house, from his truck.

He didn't have all that much. Especially after the divorce. He still respected and liked Nazuna but he knew she deserved better. After the divorce he'd had a few relationships that had more to do with sex than companionship.

Sex. Lately the call hadn't been there. In fact he didn't even miss it. He preferred the single life----no commitments, no giggly women hanging from his arm wanting to buy every goddamn expensive thing in sight.

Shaking his head he slammed the door to his Navigator, just as he'd slammed the door to his life 10 years ago and his father's dying words.

'I loved your mama more than life itself…you and your brother too…'

Growling slightly, he kicked the front door open and proceeded down the fairly large main entrance hall towards the back room. Setting it down he stood and stretched before moving out towards the kitchen.

The place looked as if it hadn't been remodeled in a 100 years. Everything was so…dingy. It didn't look like it had been given any TLC in over a year…

…Ever since Ayame was killed. Sighing, he opened the fridge and took out a beer, when he heard a knocking on the front screen door followed by a soft voice.

"Hello!? Anyone home!?" Came the light voice that brought shivers down his spine.

Closing his eyes, he held back the burn in his stomach he'd felt. The burn for 'her'. Shaking away his thoughts, he set his beer down and ventured into the hallway.

"There you are, Inuyasha. I was afraid you hadn't heard me." The obsidian haired goddess smiled, a light laugh leaving her lips.

Inuyasha forced a smile to his misused lips. "It's a surprise to see you here." He said, not wanting to converse with anybody----ever again.

Kagome smiled and stepped into the airy house, when he'd held the screen door open for her.

"Wow…I haven't been in this house in over a year…feels so empty." She said, hugging herself and rubbing her arms when she suddenly got goosepimples.

"Did you want anything to drink? I've got bottled water…" He suggested, waving towards the kitchen. He watched as a small smile grew into a radiant one on her pink lips.

"I'd like that very much, thank you." She said, before following him down the hallway. Stepping into the kitchen she hesitated before moving in further. She looked around with a sad expression.

"Here. It's a pity this house hasn't been renovated in a long time." He said, handing her, her water before retrieving his abandoned beer bottle.

"Yes…Ayame…" She said, pausing to get a large gulp. Inuyasha knew that she was getting choked up and was trying to hide it. "Let's just say that Kouga wasn't exactly very…homey." She'd continued.

Inuyasha nodded, taking a look around the room as he took a swig from his beer.

"So…how have you been the past couple of years?" He asked trying to get rid of the awkward tension in the air.

Kagome smiled, her upset dwindling away. "I've been well. I've started my own chain of business in town here and in the surrounding towns as well."

"Really? What business?" He asked, unable to draw his attention away from the sweat droplets on her upper lip.

"I have my own advertising business. It's a little slow but I enjoy it very much." She answered with shrug before glugging on her water bottle.

"Whatever happened to your dream bakery or ice cream parlor business?" He asked suddenly remembering her mentioning it briefly many years before.

She looked at him with surprise before laughing. "I can't believe you remembered that!"

He gave a small grin before averting his gaze to the floor and adding quietly. "I remember lots of things you've said…"

Kagome was quiet for a moment before she leaned forward and brushed away his black shaggy, messy bangs from his eyes. "You haven't change much…Inuyasha. I'm glad."

Inuyasha looked up and was lost in her icy-blue orbs. He took hold of her warm hand before she pulled away and held it in his. Everything was broken the moment a soft, yet raspy voice sounded out into the front yard of the house next door.

"Kagome!? Kagome where are you!? You have a client on the phone!"

Kagome immediately pulled away and gave a small nervous laugh. "My grandfather." She said, turning and moving out from the kitchen and was at the front door when she paused and turned back.

"It's great to have you back Inuyasha." She said, her smile making him burn yet again. Just as she was opening the screen door, Inuyasha darted forward and took her hand.

"Kagome I…" He started suddenly feeling stupid. "…I'm sorry for…taking advantage of you…all those years ago."

Kagome smiled, her sky blue orbs shining. Raising her hand from his she cupped a cheek and spoke.

"It's all right Inuyasha. You were in pain… I forgave you after I'd left." She said softly. Inuyasha relished at how her soft skin felt against his unshaved face.

She gave one last smile before turning away and hopping down the steps and heading towards the nice house next door.
