Kagome stood before her mirror, examining herself carefully. The black, sleeveless dress she wore belled out near the floor, covering with tulle and glitter. It wasn’t something she normally would have liked, but it was fun. She felt like a princess, especially with her hair swept up from her neck, with ringlets piled upon her head. She was sure she would look nothing like Aiko, and that’s exactly what she wanted.

She heard a thump from the stairs, followed by a string of curses, and smiled, looking toward the door as Inuyasha entered. His eyes widened in surprise at the sight of her, and then he scowled. “You think you’re going out wearing that?” he bellowed.

Kagome rolled her eyes. “What’s wrong with it?”

“Someone could see your… your… shoulders!”

Kagome laughed merrily. She knew it was Inuyasha’s way of saying he thought she looked nice. “Well, let’s let Seiji get one last good look at my shoulders,” she told him. “What happened to you on the stairs, anyway?”

Inuyasha growled, looking down at his feet, which had the new shoes her mother had bought on them. “I can’t walk right in these damn things.”

“Well, you’ll just have to put up with it for a little while.”

“Hey, I can be charming without some stupid shoes.”

Kagome kept her mouth shut. She wasn’t convinced that Inuyasha could be charming at all. It was one of the things she loved about him. “Well, I’m going to go ahead. Are you sure you remember how to get there?”

“I’ll be there,” he assured her. “And after this, we’re going back. For a while.”

“I know, I know,” she replied, squeezing his hand before going down the stairs.

Seiji stood in front of his school, beginning to become impatient. Aiko was already there, not even forty feet from him with her acne-prone date. He supposed when it came to the choice of money or good looks, his ex-girlfriend would choose money every time. He had money, and plenty of it, but he supposed it wasn’t enough for her. Nothing ever had been.

Where was Kagome? He was starting to become embarrassed. Everyone else was already standing around with their dates, waiting for the doors to open so the dance could begin, and still he stood alone.

“Seiji?”

He turned, his eyes growing wide, and he barely kept his jaw from dropping. “K-Kagome?” What was she wearing? He couldn’t help but think she looked beautiful, but his classmates were staring at her very unique dress. This wasn’t what he had expected. He’d expected Kagome to follow his lead, making it easier to convince Aiko that he’d found someone far more mature than her.

“Seiji, are you okay?”

“Um… yes.” He managed a small smile, glancing over at Aiko in her simple green sheath gown. She arched a sculpted brow at him before returning her attention to her own date. “What took you?”

“Oh.” Kagome feigned sadness, staring at the ground. “Nothing important. I’m not late, am I?”

“N-No. I was just worried.”

“That’s very nice of you.” She looked him over. “You look very… professional.”

“Thank you,” he said, not even noticing Kagome’s sarcasm.

“Kagome!” Right on time, the girl thought, turning her attention across the street, where Inuyasha stood, looking rather pissed. She was pretty sure not all of it was a show. Even thought they’d planned this, she could feel the hanyou’s jealous eyes burning right through Seiji.

“Isn’t that your…” Seiji trailed off, eyes widening with fear as Inuyasha started to cross the street toward them.

“Inuyasha?” Kagome cried, going to stand before Seiji. “What are you doing here?”

In response, Inuyasha grabbed her wrist, pulling her to him. “She’s not going anywhere with you,” he told Seiji, smirking menacingly.

Seiji seemed panicked as he looked to Kagome. “Kagome, aren’t you going to say something?”

“I…” She sighed. “Seiji, I can’t. I thought being with you would help me get over Inuyasha, but it’s just not working like I planned.”

“What?”
The boy looked Inuyasha over in disbelief. “What could you possibly see in him?”

“Well…” Kagome looked up at her real boyfriend. “He’s honest, for one.” She smiled as Inuyasha looked down at her, then completely shocked her by kissing her deeply in front of almost the entire tenth grade class of the high school. She tried to push him off after hearing the gasps and whispers around them, but Inuyasha only gripped her shoulders harder. When he drew away she was breathless.

“That’s kinda hot,” Aiko muttered to one of her friends, who sighed in agreement.

“Let’s get out of here,” Inuyasha said, and Kagome nodded.

“I’m sorry, Seiji. I hope you have fun tonight.” With that, the couple walked away, leaving Seiji standing under the scrutinizing stares of his classmates.

Once they were around the block, Kagome pushed Inuyasha roughly. “Hey!” he shouted.

“What the heck was that?” she cried.

He smiled smugly. “Just had to let him know I wasn’t kidding around, is all.”

“So you embarrassed me to do it?”

He rolled his eyes. “Yeah, you seemed real humiliated.”

“I… I was!” He looked sideways to see the blush rising on her face. “I’m not into… huge displays of affection.”

“What are you into?” he asked.

She glared at him, knowing he was trying to goad her. “Private huge displays of affection.”

“Oh, like ‘Inuyasha, my love?’” he sighed breathily, mocking her.

“What…” Inuyasha was clueless as to what he’d done as he watched Kagome’s face redden very quickly. “INUYASHA, YOU READ MY DIARY?!”

Shit.
“Kagome, I can explain, I swear, I didn’t--”

“SIT, BOY!”
