He promised to protect me, and he does not go back on his promises

I feel safest when near him

Or when wearing his red fire rat

He sometimes acts like I am a burden; I know he doesn't really feel that way

He feels that he needs to protect himself, from past hurts being re-opened,

And from new attacks on his character, his heart, and his soul

I try to help him heal

He doesn't take to this easily, still protecting himself even from me

I'll still try to get through - I see progress

Someday he'll be free from his past, and I hope I'll be there with him still
