Jomaku: Matsuro no Warai

I remember, when I was young, my okaa-san often took me kindly by the face and would tell me, “Kagome, there is so much water in you that you breathe of life.” I did not quite understand what she meant until I was much older, but I would smile at her either way for I knew she meant it in loving terms. She would speak to me kindly, patiently, for many in the village did not show me such ways. I did not understand, for often did I get called by the name `gaijin no hanyou', or `chigo no nishi'. I would run to my mother, confused, asking what they meant when they said these things. But she would only shake her head, smiling that same smile. Once, after someone had beaten me and said something particularly confusing, I ran home crying to her. It was not the fact he had said it more the way he had said it that struck me in its cruelty.

At my home, my okaa-san held me as I cried on her kimono. When I asked her what the man in the village had meant when he had told me `fuketsu nicchuukai', my mother's kind smile seemed to jump for a moment as a nervous frog leaps in to a pond when it is scared. When I turned to look at her face, tears rolled down her cheeks silently as mine. Though to me she still seemed beautiful, though I did not understand why she cried. So I asked her, “Mother, why do your eyes rain?” You see, she had not cried before me until that moment, though I had often heard strange noises during the night coming from my father and her own room. When I would ask her what they were, she said a spirit of a little girl that was lonely would come to her at night for the embrace of a mother. She asked me not to get jealous, for this little girl was as lonely as I was. I smiled and told my mother I would be happy to comfort this lonely little spirit of ours any time, but my mother replied that the little girl was envious of my beautiful blue eyes that sparkled like a river in the afternoon sun.

I would smile and laugh at this, and thought nothing more of the sounds that came from my mother's room.

But now as she stood before me, those wet things I hardly understood coming from my mother, I was more confused by her reaction than I was of the man who spoke those words to me. For I had seen others cry before, kneeling and weeping at the loss of their husbands during the war. They would wail like banshees and evil ghosts of the night, but my mother stood there serenely, with a loving smile of her face. A sad understanding look crossed her eyes, one I had seen many times before, but one I still did not comprehend for I was too young and naïve, and she was too strong to let me see her pain.

“Pay him no mind, he is nothing more than a silly man filled with too many things, little Kagome-chan. That is all. He needed to find some place to release it before he blew up and fell away like fireworks at night.” I remember, I clapped my hands happily at the idea of beautiful fireworks as if we were at a festival. “But, Okaa-san, that does not explain why you have amedare.

But Okaa-san just smiled, and smoothed the hair over my head, and offered if I would like to play a game of shogi. Though it was not often a woman played such a game, my father was samurai, and thought it would be clever to teach my mother. Of course, I would not refuse, because I always won and as I always did, my mother would have a thoughtful look and smile gently as if she knew some great secret and brilliant joke that I didn't quite yet understand.

A/n: Concerning my Japanese: I know NONE. I put together what I can knowing what measly Japanese I have picked up. Strike me in the back of the head if you will, but I am doing my best, even if I am butchering it. The fact is I am trying, and hard, so please no flames concerning this. Also, a glossary shall be added at the end of each chapter if there is more Japanese than most people can handle, so be sure to check each chapter before continuing. Thank you ^_^
