Chapter 8

“Kagome you can't go with us” Inuyasha said to his defiant wife.

“But why, don't say because I'm too pregnant or because it's too dangerous, I'll stay out of the way, I promise, and I just want to be near you, I get so scared when your not here Inuyasha.

Inuyasha looked down at his wife and sighed, he didn't know what to do, she was seven months pregnant, they had no idea when the baby would come, because youkai babies came at around seven months, and hanyous around eight months. Keade predicted that because the baby was one fourth youkai it would come closer to nine months, the normal time for a human baby to come, however, since no hanyou had ever had a child, no one knew. All he knew was that Kagome was very pregnant and they were going to look for Naraku. Even if she did try to stay out of the way, which she wouldn't, Naraku would still be able to use her to get to him, and be able to hurt her and their pup. He couldn't let that happen.

“Kagome, you can't go, you could get hurt and…” Kagome started crying. “What? Why are you crying? Kagome, why are you crying?” he asked in a very concerned way, just a minute ago she was ready to fight to the death, she was going, now she was crying for kami only knows what reason.

“You hate me don't you?” Kagome asked as she wailed into his hoari.

“What, why would ever think that? I could never, never, never hate you, I love you with all of my heart and soul, that's why you can't go, because I would never be able to recover if something happened to you.”

He didn't know why, but he'd been having to tell Kagome that he loved her a lot lately.

Almost anything he did could be turned into, 'you hate me don't you' or `why don't you just kill me if I'm such a burden.'

Keade had told him that when women are pregnant they have mood swings and that sometimes she'll be screaming that she hates you and then the next second she'll be crying that she loves you. This was all really new to him. It was always Kagome fixing who was level headed and logical, now it was like forced on him.

All he really knew was that he couldn't wait until it was over. Kagome had been through hell, morning sickness, fainting, swollen ankles, and mood swings. He felt really bad for her, she had gone through all of this to have their baby, when all he had done was sit back and watch, smoothing things over when he needed to and holding her while her puked back up everything she had eaten in the last few hours, rubbing her back afterwards.

The monk had said that he was going soft, but what else was he to do, watch Kagome suffer through this pregnancy, which was his fault, and do nothing to help her?

Kagome kept crying and said “I just wanna be near you, that's all I want.” He didn't know what to do. Then an idea popped into his head, “Kagome, why don't you go to your time and visit your family, you haven't been back in a while, I'm sure your Okaa would love to see you and maybe do some pup shopping.” Inuyasha suggested knowing it would help her.

“Ok, that's a good idea, I'll go visit Okaa and get my mind off the battle and do some shopping, we're almost out of ramen anyways, and it's been about a month since I went back.”

“Ok then, you can pack tonight and tomorrow morning before Miroku, Sango, Kirara, Shippo, and I leave I'll take you back across the well.”

“Ok” Kagome said, still holding on with all of her force to her husbands haori.

“Why don't you go on in the bedroom and get your things out and I'll be in a minute to help you.”

“Ok” Kagome said happily standing up and walking to her bedroom.

&# 8220;Kagome hurry up, we've gotta get going!”

“Ok, I'm coming, I just had to pee,” She said as she walked out of her house. Inuyasha walked over and picked her up, carrying her bridal style, so he wouldn't hurt the baby, and picked up her bag. He walked to the well and jumped in. She had already fallen asleep.

Soon the familiar blue light consumed them and they were 500 years in the future, in Tokyo. Inuyasha hopped out of the well house and over into the main house. He jumped into the tree with ease and through the window in Kagome's room, which was open a small bit. He walked in and sat Kagome on the bed, allowing her to sleep and walked down stairs to inform her mother that she was there.

His nose lead him straight to Mrs. Higurashi, in the kitchen. As he walked in he noticed three cases of ramen sitting on the counter and Mrs. Higurashi was at the table with her back turned crying. There were some papers in front of her and while Kagome had been teaching him to read and write, there were some letters that he didn't recognize. Mrs Higurashi turned around surprised to see Inuyasha standing there.

“Oh hi Inuyasha,” he said wiping her tears hoping he wouldn't ask what was wrong with her.

“Why are you crying?” he asked rudely.

“Inuyasha please take a seat,” Inuyasha sat down next to his mother in law. She reached out and placed her hand over his and said sweetly, “Sweetie, um, you see we have a problem.”

“Ok, what kinda problem?” Inuyasha asked, becoming more and more interested in what she was saying.

“Well, you see a couple of weeks ago Souta had a fever, I thought nothing of it and sent him to bed, thinking it was just a cold. Well, after several days, he still had a fever, and it was getting higher, so I took him to the doctor.” She said as she broke out into tears.

“Wait where is Souta, he shouldn't left for school yet and I don't smell him,” Inuyasha asked, not really wanting to know the answer.

“Well, he has something called Japanese encephalitis, it's a rare disease that you can get from a bug bite, however, it can kill you if left untreated for a long period of time.”

“Yeah, well Souta was left untreated for two weeks. That is why most people die from it, because they think it's the flu and wait to long for treatment.”

“Wait, are you saying that Souta is dead?” Inuyasha asked quietly, not wanting to hear her answer.

“He died yesterday at one in the morning.” she said simply, letting the words echo in her own head.

Inuyasha didn't say anything, he just got up from the table and walked to the staircase and up the stairs to Kagome's room, opening the door and walking over to her sleeping form.
He kissed her gently on the forehead and sat back against her bed. He brought up old memories, of meeting Souta for the first time, of how the boy always wanted to play video games, and how the boy looked up him, although he didn't know why.

He also thought of his and Kagome's wedding, Souta being the best man, and how excited and proud he was to be given such an honor.

He smirked to himself at the memory of his and Kagome's `wedding night.' They had had their wedding in her time and Kagome had explained that it was customary to have sex on your wedding night to signify your coming together as one. Well he didn't have to be convicted. Souta heard something in the middle of the night and went to see if his sister was ok and walked in on something he probably hadn't have. Kagome was scared she had traumatized her younger brother, that he would never get the image of Inuyasha on top of a moaning Kagome out of his head. Well little did she know that Souta had seen them before and he had forgotten the whole seen by the next day.

Inuyasha looked down as he felt something wet run down his cheek. He realized he was crying. He wiped the tear from his face and looked at his wife, who was beginning to wake up. No sense in putting it off he thought to himself. Kagome blinked a couple of times and rubbed her eyes as she sat up.

“I thought you would have left by now,” she said while yawning.

“Well, um, there's something you should know,” he said with no emotion.

“What's wrong? Wait Inuyasha, have you been crying?” She asked beginning to get scared, she had been married to Inuyasha for over a year and had known him for three years and not once had she ever seen him cry.

“Well,” he started as he moved up to the bed to sit next to his wife on the bed, “you see a couple weeks ago Souta had a fever and your mom thought it was a cold or the flu or something.”

“Yeah?”

“Well, he turned out to have something called Japanese encephalitis.”

“What? What is that?”

“It's something you get from a bug bite and if you don't get help then it could kill you.”

“Inuyasha? What are you telling me?”

“Well, your mom waited to long and by the time they got him to the hospital it was too late.”

“No, no you're not telling me this, no.” Kagome said as tears fell down her own cheeks.

“He um, died this morning at one. Or that's what your mother said.” He reached over and put his arm around his wife and pulled her to him.

Kagome just looked in his eyes and continued crying, burying herself in his haori.
He held her close and allowed her to cry, rubbing her back.

All of a sudden she stopped crying and looked up to her husband. “What, what is it, Kagome are you ok?” He asked beginning to worry.

“Inuyasha I think the baby is coming early.”

“Why?”

“Because I think I just felt a contraction,” and soon enough Inuyasha looked down, her water had just broken.
