Sputtering, he waved his arms and cursed, "Off with you, damn guards! I want none of your shit!"
His response was a snort and a protest, "I am not a 'damn guard', as you say. And I really don't think that's a way to thank me for saving your ass."
Shippo was taken aback, and peered upward bashfully at the golden eyes that burned him. They were worse than the summer sun. More dangerous, more heated, and very critical to boot.
Though Fox knew he was right, and that he should have been thanking the man, his pride didn't allow him to be spoken to in such a rude way. He was the Fox! He should have more respect.
"Hey! I didn't ask you to save me! I was doing fine just by myself!"
Again, the man snorted.
"Keh! I'm sorry I misinterpreted your screaming. 'Help me, help me!'. I thought you were a little girl being picked on, but as I see I am mistaken, I can just as easily give you back to the guards."
Shippo began to panic as the man headed back in what Shippo assumed was the direction of the town.
"Wait! No, no! Please don't do that! I'm sorry, I'm very, very sorry. Thank you so much, Sir... uh... Sir Knight."
Apparently this appeased the man, and he stopped walking. For once, Shippo actually got a chance to examine his armor and other features besides his eyes.
Those eyes were just too distracting. They commanded far too much attention.
Shippo had a hard time dealing with things that unnerved him.
The armor the man wore was indeed black, and it was very finely made. To the eye, it looked heavy. But the movement the 'knight' allowed showed otherwise.
Down his back was a long braid of hair, something Shippo had missed before. He knew it had been white, as white as the... mare... but, he hadn't know the length. It stopped short of his waist.
He was obviously not from around here...
He even spoke differently. He was no peasant.
What was he doing wandering around by himself?
"Well then, I'll leave you then."
He began to walk off again, and nervousness overcame Shippo. He had no idea where the man had taken him to, how far he was from the city, and most importantly-where his next meal was coming from. And how about the guards? He couldn't defend himself. He needed a big, strong man like him to protect him.
After all, it was the man's duty as a knight. He was only just a little kid.
"Wait! Uh, Knight, sir! I'm coming with you!"
That stopped the man in his tracked, and he looked behind him at Shippo with an obvious scowl on his face. That made Shippo stop as well.
"I think not."
Quickly trying to come up with excuses, Shippo began to blabber as the man continued to walk.
"Well, who knows! Haha, people could always use company, and I am such great company! Good sense of humor, good way with people! I'm very resourceful- of course, you wouldn't know it looking at me, but I am. I mean, if you knew who I was, you'd know. Then you'd definitely want to be with me! Everyone knows my name, everyone I tell you!"
Without missing a step, the knight said, "The Fox."
Shippo stumbled at this, and landed on his face. Correcting himself, and scrambling to catch up with the knight, he laughed sheepishly. "Well, then... uh... Knight, Sir..."
For once Shippo found himself speechless. He wasn't used to being ignored when he tried to get someone's attention. He was just too charming to ignore! Huffing indignantly, he was about to spew out another rant when the knight let out a shrill whistle that was so sudden Shippo jumped.
Blinking, Shippo looked around. He was about to ask, when he saw what it was for coming their way...
The mare... with the horn...
Squealing, Shippo ran behind the knight and pointed in disbelief, "I-I-I-I-! I thought that was my imagination!"
The Knight looked down at him in equal disbelief, "What are you talking about?"
"Uni-! Uni! C-corn! Unicorn!"
To Shippo's surprise, the knight growled at him and grabbed him by the shirt, lifting him up to eye level, "You can see her?!"
Staring at the knight incredulously, Shippo snapped, "Of course, blind man! How could I not?! She's standing right there!"
The knight spat, "That's not what I meant! I mean you can see her for what she is!"
Shippo growled, beginning to feel very insulted by this man-hero or not. "There's a forsaken horn coming out of the middle of her bloody forehead! Who in devil could miss that?!"
The knight dropped Shippo on his bottom, growling at him again, "Don't speak of her in such a way. She deserves far more respect than that. That is your only warning."
Not having his question answered, the knight turned away from him. The Unicorn kneeled before the man, allowing him easy access to her back. As he mounted, she stood, her radiant tail swishing in the sun and sparkling in a marvelous display-it was as if her tail and mane were made from spun diamonds, her coat shining like burnished silver.
She was a brilliant, amazing creature.
Shippo gaped in awe as they rode past him, nearly forgetting something very important...
He needed to be near the knight for protection.
Blinking dumbly, his mind began to work again as he raced after them, "Wait for mee! I'm just a little kid!"
Launching himself onto the tail of the Unicorn, he clambered his way up to her backside, huffing and puffing from the exertion.
Wheezing, he noted the way the knight looked down upon him, the way one may a cockaroach... but the knight did not comment on anything.
Sighing, Shippo felt very unwelcome... not to mention, he didn't even know the knight's name. But at the moment, he could have cared less.
Yawning, he curled up easily and sighed deeply, decided he deserved a very well earned nap.
Not to mention, the Unicorn smelled lovely... of lavender and roses... inhaling deeply, he ran his fingers over her muscles... her coat was velvet soft... she was a dream...
She must be a dream...
He knew...
There was no such thing as Unicorns.

Chapter Three: The Hero and The Unicorn
Shippo was rather rudely awoken by a load of cold water being dumped upon him.Sputtering, he waved his arms and cursed, "Off with you, damn guards! I want none of your shit!"
