Late

He knew there was something wrong the minute he was roused from his restless slumber. A strange feeling of foreboding and emptiness had seeped into his heart.

Jumping out of the tree on the village edge, he started towards the hut they had built for her after the well closed when the jewel was purified.

Then he saw it. A usually happy sign, a sign of a friend returning from afar, but today it only filled him with more dread for reasons he couldn't understand. A Shini-dama-chuu flying gracefully over the forest, barely skimming the tops of the trees.

Instead of following the specter this time, he raced to the hut.

He found it unoccupied, and the apprehension threatened to consume him. Then he saw it. A scrap of paper lying where her body should still be resting peacefully.

With trembling hands he picked up the scrawled note.

Inuyasha,

This is how it has to be. I loved you, and I will miss you. Be happy with her.

Always,
Kagome

For a moment, his heart stopped. He couldn't breathe, couldn't move, couldn't think of anything but

“Kagome…”

His fist clenched around the note, and he whirled around to face the door. “Kagome!”

He followed her lingering scent through the forest. His forest. He ran faster when he caught the scent of blood.

Goshinboku. The God tree. Their tree. It was the thing that connected them; even through the ages it was still there in both words. It was always peaceful, and serene. A place they both liked to go.

But now, the air was filled with nothing but turmoil and sorrow. No peace would be found there again.

She was there, at the base of the tree, bow strewn to one side of her, quiver of arrows to the other.

The note fell forgotten to the ground. “Kagome…” he whispered again, in utter disbelief.

There, slumped in a pool of her own crimson blood, sat the girl he had traveled with for years. Who became his first friend, his best friend, and his love.

He took a shaking step forward, and reached out towards her. Maybe if he touched her body, it would disappear. None of this would have happened.

He gently lifted her head, and brushed her hair out of her pale, cold face. Without the curtain of ebony, he could see clearly her wound. The arrow she had thrust through her heart, mimicking the wound that bound him to the very tree her limp body now leant against.

Her tear-stained face was already pale and cold as ice. It sickened him to see she who was usually so full of life in this state.

Everything stopped. The forest quieted, the sun stopped its slow ascension of the sky, the world stopped turning. Everything stopped, except for the realization, which finally entered his mind.

She ended her life because of him, and a false relationship with… her.

The creeping emptiness in his heart did finally envelop him. There was nothing but the pain tearing at his heart. Nothing but the body, the pain, and the realization of love come too late.

He didn't realize that the wave of tears overcame him. Nor did he care. He didn't care about anything in this world anymore.

“Kagome.”

A/N: I know it's stereotypical, I know it's been done, I know it sucks. I just needed to write something like this. I'm just… not in a good frame of mind right now, and unlike some people, I know more creative ways to release emotions.
