         Chapter 23: Good-byes

         ^^^

    ;               With Kagura

Kagura left Kanna at a near cave. She did not want her sister to be in a possible confrontation with Lord Sesshoumaru, or any other member still present.

Sitting high in a tree, thinking of what she will do, Kagura stares deep into the shards. She can feel its pull, trying to control her into retrieving the missing jewel. 'Never have I felt such pull. While Naraku was in possession of my heart, it must have numbed the calling effect of the jewel.'

It calls to her, to any demon in close range. It wants its completion. No matter what.

Shaking her head to try and clear her heads of its urges. 'I will not allow it to control me.' She puts it inside of a pouch, but the tug is stronger now that it does not feel flesh. It needs a vessel to locate itself. It wishes for Kagura, or any other.

Jumping from her perch, she looks to her side, where the jewels reside. Slowly she inches her hand closer to its mouth. Pulling lightly on the strings binding it closed, she opens the pouch, reaches inside and once again stares at the shards as they glow from the sun inside.

 &nb sp;                With Kagome

Kagome stood staring into her room at the castle. Never again, she fears, will she ever see this room again.

It was the only actual place she ever felt she didn't have to feel different. The village was home, but she still felt like she was being shunned by the other villagers. A miko hanging out with demons, a perverted monk, a demon slayer, the villagers probably thought they were all con-artists, who would believe something like that.
probably only agreed to keep her because she was believed to be her sisters reincarnation. She was the villages miko, they probably looked coldly behind her back, taking care of a half-demon.

No, she shouldn't think like that, they all were so kind to her. Especially Kaede. She was like a grandmother to her, always making sure the group was housed and fed. The villagers were not cold hearted people. She was only thinking about that to make the possibility of leaving easier on herself.

Looking to the floor, Kagome walks to her bed, grabs her back-pack and starts putting up her things. Extra cloths, her school books, brush and deodorant. Who would have guessed it was in the side pocket this whole time. Laughing at herself when she remembered yelling for her deodorant at home, when she was unable to find it.

When she was finished, she stared at her bag. 'Where was I able to find this bag? Its over twice the size of a camping bag. Where did Mom find it? And did it have to be yellow?' Strange things pop into your head when all you do is think about nothing.

Closing it, she puts it on her back, adjusting the weight to fit evenly on both her sides. 'Will I be able to handle living like a normal teenaged human again? Probably not, they don't understand everything I do. Everything I've done! The world has spoiled itself with technology.'

Walking out of her bedroom, Sesshoumaru is waiting out her door, looking at the far wall of the hall. Not looking at her, he talks. "I will be escorting you to the gardens. Your friends are waiting." He walks, still not looking at her.

Kagome just follows him, a tense silence fills the hall. Surprised that Jaken isn't at his side as he always is.

They make it to the doors. Sesshoumaru feels hesitant to open them, not knowing why. Breathing, he pushes open the doors, squinting at the setting suns rays.

Kagome wonders why they agreed to fuse the jewels in the gardens, 'I guess so that the jewel doesn't harm the interior.' Smiling, she looks at the fully bloomed flowers, and her friends on looking.

She walks by Sesshoumaru's side, feeling oddly the sensation she gets when watching the wedding that time her cousin got married. She was a brides maid, looking on at the couple happily walk down the isle for there I do's.

She felt just like that, happy, the tingling feeling, not because she was going home, but from the beautiful garden, it's the same as when she was little, pretending to marry her prince charming, both walking side-by-side. She would always picture the most gorgeous man she could think of. Right now, she glanced up at Sesshoumaru, and thought, 'I don't have a prince but a Lord at my side. Nothing could be any better at the moment of my leaving.'

"Kagome?" Being snapped out of her thoughts, said girl looks at Sango. Smiling, she walks up to her. "Kagome... I don't know what's going to happen when the jewel is complete, but I want you to have this, to remember me by." Holding up her face mask, she hands it to Kagome.

She's shocked that Sango would give up something so important to her. Taking it, she watches as it gleams in the sun. 'It's so shiny.' Looking back at her sister friend, unshed tears threatening to spill, both reach for a deep hug.

"Thank you Sango. I'll treasure it." Ending the hug, they pull apart. Sango sniffles away a few leftover tears.

Kirara mews, Kagome looks down and picks up the fire-cat demon. Petting and hugging her, Kagome giggles when she purrs louder. Kagome hands Kirara back to Sango.

Miroku comes and, he too, gives Kagome a hug. Sliding to close, Kagome elbows him to the stomach in a playful manner. Laughing at the Mirokuness. "Forgive me Lady Kagome, I couldn't resist." Smiling his practiced smile, he takes a step back and removes his glove and prayer beads. "This is for you Kagome."

By now Kagome has silent tears falling quickly. All these people, she helped protect. And they protected her. She will never get such friends back in the future, no one will risk their lives for her.

Shippo and Rin come next. Kagome kneels and hugs them both, kissing them on the fore-head. "Do you guys promise to behave while I'm gone?" They look up, puffy eyes looking sad. It pains Kagome that she has to leave them. Both children nod, Shippo pulls out his hair ribbon, orange hair falls gracefully to his side.

"Here Kagome. To remember me by." Handing it to his sergeant mother, not wanting to say good-bye.

"Rin wants Kagome to have this." She hands Kagome a flower headband. Daisies and Lilies tied randomly to each other.

"Thank you Rin, Shippo. I'll keep them with me forever." They smile up at her, wiping away tears.

'This is too hard.' Before getting up, Jaken comes to her side.

"This is thanks for saving me from the brats." Not looking at her, he hands her a jeweled hair clip.

She gasps at its beauty. She wouldn't have believed Jaken would possess something this gorgeous. Taking it from him, she smiles warmly at the toad demon. He turns to leave, but she grabs him from behind and he too gets a hug. "Thank you Jaken, its beautiful."

She lets him down. He scampers away, blushing madly.

Finally getting up, she is confronted by one last person. Sesshoumaru waits for her to fully rise. Kagome sees that he has a stronger hold on his emotions then usual.

Not saying a word, he shows a blue sapphire necklace, when she reaches for it, he grabs her hand with his free hand, and places the sapphire in her palm, closing her fingers over it. Looking into each others eyes for a second longer, Sesshoumaru turns away.

Smiling, she whispers a thank you, loud enough for only Sesshoumaru to hear.

Kagome walks to the middle of her circle of friends. Everything placed carefully in either her bag or her body. (Flower headband on head, hair clip on hair, necklace on neck.) She grabs both pieces of the jewel, one in each hand, and raises her hands in a prayer position, hands cupped over her mouth. 'Please let this work!' Chanting a prayer Kaede said Kikyo used before her, Kagome concentrates as best she can.

Everyone looks on as a blue swirl surrounds Kagome. Her loose cloths and hair flutter in the false winds. Cool air blowing in all direction. A pink glow emits from the inside of the spiral.

A final blast of energy and light surround the gardens, everyone is enveloped in the glow. Once it dies down, Kagome still stands, a little shaken, but still there.

Sango, Miroku, Shippo and Rin all run to see if anything was wrong or was this the actual conclusion of the jewel.

"Kagome! Is everything alright?" Sango was the first to make it to her.

Quickly breathing, Kagome looks around, Sesshoumaru and Jaken are still in the same area.

Looking down, she opens up her cupped palms. The jewel slowly came into view. On its upper right side, a piece of the jewel is still missing.
